Questions
1.can I update to cupcake without having to setup my phone?(i dont have data plan)
2.Whenever I try to download something on the market, it just says 'starting download' and never starts
3.Can I develop apps with the current android sdk that will work on firmware 1.1 AND 1.5?
I do not have a data plan, and I had to go to a T-Mobile store and fight with the people there until they finally let me use a SIM card to set it up...and I do NOT want to go through that again
also, I'm a C++ programmer with 3 years experience, but no experience at all in Java...so will it be hard, or easy to start developing apps for android?
PLEASE help me with this, even if you can only answer one of the questions it will be GREATLY appreciated since this phone is more complicated than a rubiks cube!

Yes, you can update it and it won't ask for a re-avtivation, dun worry buddy !
The market stuff is crazy sometimes ! Just reboot the phone, and everything will be ok ( make sure your wifi connection is strong enough )

When you start a project using eclipse with the SDK installed correctly it will ask you 1.1, 1.5, or API.
Search the forums about activating without a dataplan there are instructions on how to do it.
You need the current sdk for cupcake, there is also a ndk for making native c apps too now, so hope you make something good

Since you are on a modded rom, you cannot receive updates, pick out a new rom and go into recovery and flash it, since I am going to assume you are on an old recovery, you are gonna have to rename it to update.zip and put it on the root of your sd

You can manually install the update using the threads here, or at t-mobile.com/forums ( go the development section ). The update feature of the phone sucks badly, don't trust it

I found on google that if you place update.zip on your phone and boot by pressing home+power, you can update it like that, but will that make me have to setup my phone again? I dont have a data plan, so i'll just stay with 1.1 if I have to
I haven't really started with android development yet, but I've given it a look over. I'm coming from c#.net and most of the syntax is the same, as they are both have roots in C you shouldn't have a problem there. So it's mostly just learning the platform and it's library. .net is managed though like android.
Eclipse isn't really in the same league as Visual Studio though.

if you flash a rom that is based on the adp phone (cyanogen's comes to mind)
you can skip singing into your google account until you have wifi set up.
so if i just do the update.zip trick with the cyanogen thing I wont have to sign in with google at all??!?!

yes no signing into google, but you won't be able to use the market.
so whats the point of it if I cant download anything? or is there another way to get market apps? cause i'd like to have stuff like shazam, ringdroid, and all that cool stuff

99% sure about this, I've been flashing ROMs, Radio and stuffs regarding my G1 for a while. At first it was kinda scared indeed, but as long as you get through the first time, the left is as easy as eating an apple pie . Ask me and I will answer if I can
all you do is
put the update.zip on the root of your sdcard (i.e. no folders)
power down your phone and boot into recovery with home and power
(optional but may be required if your phone doesn't boot all the way up.)
wipe your phone.
flash the rom
reboot and wait for phone to boot up
choose to skip signing into google
set up your wifi
open the market and you can sign into google on wifi and be able to download apps.

I have CM 4.2.11.1 installed on my phone, and I cannot install Maps from the market. It downloads and starts to install and then says that it cant be installed.
I've been searching around and can't find an answer. Can someone link me to the maps update image that was posted a little while ago?
It was something someone made that you just flash in the recovery menu so it installs through there.
If someone could post it, that would be great. Thanks!
Remove maps from ext partition of your sd card, wipe dalvik-cache. You should be able to install maps then. If not, flash HTC 1.6 stock image and then latest CM and try again.

i had the same issue like u, what i did was...
download the the android 1.6 and the latest cyan i understand u know how to get those...
after that u need to wipe everything a mean everything, ext, dalvik, data, if ur using RA-recovery, DONT WIPE THE BATTERY DATA.
Next flash the android 1.6 dont restart, flash the cyan and thats it.
U can get the maps update..

no....he got a c&d for that.....
the reason its not installing is because the installed app and the one your downloading have different signatures. comepletely uninstall the installed maps and then install the new maps
i had my phone upgraded by a friend to cognition 3.02, which was a bonus after he fixed some settings so the phone could read my sim again. everything works great, but i have run into yet another problem. the app store doesent show me all the apps, and i actually cant find anything i was able to use before, all is shows me is a bunch of apps that have less than 50 downloads. i also sometimes get a message saying that my device might not be compatible with the android market. All i want is to the the market to work properly and not have to bring it back in so my friend has to waste more time toying around with it.

I wasnt the one that did the upgrade, but it figure he didnt back up the android id. and as for the clear data. it just asks me to accept terms when i start it up again and i get the same result

I have the same problem after reflashing a ROM tonight. I am in a test market site and all the apps available are all test apps. I tried flashing various ROM's with the same result. I had this happen to me before and it took 24 hours before things returned to normal so I am calling it a night.

thankyou. i finally got sgs tools ready on my phone. wut do i do now?
just tried the market fix option in sgs tools. rebooted and tried the market, and still got the message that my phone might not be compatible w/ the android market, and all the apps are still missing

So i still have to talk with him huh. (nope havent tried there yet prolly do that next). one more thing though, what if i just use odin to flash to stock, would that undo everything he did? if not, might it also help fix the market issue?

Yeah it seems that way. To be honest that should have been your first stop to find the answer as most issues are posted and fixed there. If you flash with odin to the correct firmware then yes it will. What firmware did you have?
Hello all,
After flashing CyanogenMod the other day, I decided I didn't like it too much. ( Mind you, I just use my phone for basic phone stuff, so please don't flame me for it. xD ) So I used a nandroid to go back to my original (rooted) stuff.
However, in doing this, it seems that it messed up my Market app somehow.
Whenever I try to search, open, or do anything involving the Market App, it'll say: Attention. A network error has occurred. Retry, or cancel and return to the previous screen.
It's been like this for a while now. I can use internet, voice-to-text, and anything else that requires data ( not even WiFi works with Market ), but not Market.
What can I do to fix this?
Full wipe. Fresh install of rom+gapps.

It tells me that "fix_permissions: not found"
Edit: I've got it fixing now, will edit with update.
Edit(2): It didn't help, sadly.
I don't even remember, but does rooted stock 1.5 allow you to install non-market apps? If so, go find a market 2.3.6 apk on xda or google. Delete the one you have, boot into recovery wipe cache and then reboot, install the app - see if that'll work.
Nope, that didn't work sadly... Ironically, my Market worked perfectly without the updates installed. Is it possible just to block all updates for the Market apk?
this might work for you. a friend was having similar problem. this is what i did (note, i really really think that it was pure coincidence but...) go to SETTINGS -> APPLICATIONS -> MANAGE APPS. locate Market, if Force Stop is not greyed out. then click it, then click Clear Data.
like i said, his was having the same problem, i really think that it may have been a coincidence, but maybe not.

Yes, you need to delete the system app "marketupdater.apk". Also, if you go into settings/manage apps/all/market - can you click the button "uninstall updates"? If not, do you know what market version you had that worked? If so try to find and install that one using the same steps as I mentioned before. If that doesn't work, I'm at a loss.
Also what ngholson just posted is a good idea along with clear cache from the same menu.

Boot up and then reboot back into recovery reflash gapps. Boot up. Load tb go into settings, manage apps locate market force stop and clear data. Open tb up locate market updater apk. Uninstall. Reboot should be good.

The problem version is 2002306, oddly enough, I've overheard some other people having problems with it as well at a place a friend works. Maybe it's a stock hero thing. I'll revert to an older version, maybe one day this will clear itself out.

Laie I was just telling you, don't get all frisky. If you read the OP again, you'll see he WANTS to be on stock 1.5. I couldn't tell you why lol. Maybe you forgot (it's been forever) but stock and sense based ROMs already contain gapps. You only flash those on AOSP based ROMs, so he can't reflash gapps. If he wiped and then nand restored it would've restored /system which is where the market would live in a stock ROM. His issue was likely a market auto-update which did not agree with old ass donut stock. Who knows. I wasn't bashing you, and I'm not now, calm down. Hopefully this info helps you help someone later. Peace.
OP- I have ONE MORE idea. Go grab a themed market zip from xda member "pendo" - he has green, blue, and red. They should flash from recovery. Delete your current market app FIRST, and clear cache and dalvik cache in recovery, flash and reboot. Good luck.
EDIT: 2 ideas I guess, copy the nand backup to your computer, find the "marketupdater.apk" in /system/app and delete it out of the nand. Copy that new nand to the same place as the current one you have and try to wipe all then restore that newish one.... I actally have NO idea if you can alter a nand or the system.img it contains, but it may be worth a shot. You could also just give up, and get gingerbread, because it's AWESOME.

@OP - You could also try one of the *ahm* market replacements. like *ahm* applanet or something (not sure how 'legal' they are but...)
also, i know someone mentioned it before but did you ever get your permissions fixed? if not try that too, you can do it from ROM Manager.

That's about it. I think it's all worked flawlessly until the radio, but I'm not sure. If I'm missing any info, please let me know.
maybe consider starting completely over. download a new rom, i recommend aospcmod. download the latest version of gapps at the same time. if you don't already have it install ROMManager from errr. damnit your market doesn't work... hopefully you already have it. Open rom manager and install a custom recovery (i recommend clockworkmod) once that is done copy both the new rom and gapps zips to your sdcard, reboot to recovery (either manually or using rommanager) wipe everything. then select 'choose zip from sdcard' (or similar, can't remember exact verbiage) and install your ROM, then before you let it reboot, then use the same option and install gapps as well, then reboot. follow setup and it should work fine.

Happening to me too. When I tried to access the google checkout website, to make sure everything is okay with my payment options, I also got an error... so I'm hopeful that it's a problem on the server side, and will get sorted out.
Edit: Oh, I'm just on a Galaxy S phone, not a tablet (Captivate).
Happened also to few guys on Desire with ICS ROM. Yeah maybe it is with them.

Seems to be. At first it didn't work at all.. then it got to a point where I'd have to try a purchase multiple times, and it would work maybe 1 out of 3 times only. Now it seems okay.

Same problem here, have OC4.0 and an error occurred, if i will purchasing an app.
Have NoWipe OC4 reflashed, whipe cache and uninstall the market-update. The problem is not solved.
If i go to the market on webbrowser, i can purchasing the apps fine.
I hope, this problem can be solved without reflash/factory-reset.

Have NoWipe OC4 reflashed, whipe cache and uninstall the market-update. The problem is not solved.
If i go to the market on webbrowser, i can purchasing the apps fine.
I hope, this problem can be solved without reflash/factory-reset.

It really should sort itself out. It was a very wide spread and well known issue, due to server issues and the 10 cent sales. Mine is working again, but I'm sure they are still having high traffic with the sales.
Unless you just happen to have a completely unrelated issue. When I was having issues, the web market wasn't working either...

I think, the problem is, that i can't switch to DBT. OC4 has DBT not included. The market need DBT in the last time, that apps can purchased with cellphone-provider. OC4 need an MULTI-CVC that included DBT for German users.

Can't install the new market 3.4.4 on GalaxyTab P1000 and OC4. Install run fine, but then says " ready " and " not installed ".
Update: I have copied the market3.4.4.apk in folder /system/app and deleted the old vending.apk and renamed the market3.4.4.apk to vending.apk. It works fine.
Same problem here (Galaxy Tab, Overcome ROM 4.0.0, unable to install payed programs)
I installed the new Market the way diggi1 suggested (otherwise it wouldn't install). And using this new version I am still unable to install any payed programs.
