Big Problem - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi all ... am facing a BIG problem ... was using a tm G1 from Europe (RC7) version which i bought from the local market .. it was probably used by someone in UK but now its here and we could use it with any local sim. ...
i tried to gain root access to the phone by following instructions from the site
http://coolpstuts.blogspot.com/2009/07/how-to-mod-root-jailbreak-your-g1.html
now once the phone restarted after the innitial updation the phone naturally wanted me to sign into my google account (which im assuming is the regular gmail account) but all the access points are from TMobile operators and even if i try to change the access points to the ones of my local carrier it wont connect... as if there is no internet connection.
now the situation is that iam stuck while everytime i restart the phone it asks me to signin to my gmail account and i cant do that since i have a different operator. I need to UnLock the phone to other operators i believe so that it can read my SIM ....
Please HELP !!!

so do you have root access or not? if you do have root access then you can either flash a rom that is ADP based which will allow you to skip the initial setup or, go to this thread and
download file from the second post
remove .zip extension
place file on the root of you sdcard (the upmost folder)
boot into recovery (home and power)
go to the recovery console
press enter
type mount /system
then type mount /sdcard
then type cp /sdcard/apns-conf.xml /system/etc if the cp command will not work substitute it with mv
finally type reboot
if this method doesn't work then just flash an ADP based rom.
if you do not have root then look at this thread.

If you insert a non-T-Mobile SIM into a locked G1, it will present a lock screen before it shows anything else. So I am guessing your G1 is already unlocked? You just need to press menu at the Google sign-in screen and enter a new APN. Remember to open the menu and tap save when you are done entering the APN info.

You only have to sign in to Gmail once after the initial flashing of the rom. Now, you phone HAS to be unlocked in order for you to even get to the sign-in screen with non-T-mobile SIM. Sounds like all you need is APN Settings from your provider. Once you have those, hit menu button at the sign in screen and put them in. You should be good to go.
Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

wow guyz it worked.... cant thank you much !! i just threw in the correct settings and it went all good
my current situation is that i added "DREAIMG.NBH" and updated the phone with the file. ..
the second portion of the update was to reboot and than do the telnet thingy which i didnt do as of the moment .... this i was doing to gain ROOT access to the phone ... do you think that i should complete the TELNET portion of the update as well and than continue with anything or is there any way to upgrade to cupcake 1.5 (my ultimate goal) without gaining the root access ?

If you just want to update to 1.5 without gaining root, find a T-Mo EU update.zip file and run it in the recovery.

although the phone is unlocked (as per the experience) but if (lets say) i do update the phone to 1.5 without the root gain ... will it lock the phone again or something (asking me to enter only T-Mob SIM only) ??

No, there is probably no way to re-simlock a phone once it has been unlocked. Remember that the state of the simlock is stored internally in the baseband processor and is not affected at all by what you do on the main processor or in the accessible memory spaces.

thanks alot jashsu and others ... will bug u guyz laterz for other stuff ...

SGS phones can be unlocked very easily and free.
First get root (if you don't already have it) and then start reading this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761045
This is the safest way AFAIK.

Firstly you will need to enable side-loading applications (that is, enable installation of non-market applications). You find this in Settings > Applications > Development (from memory - it's something like that).
Then you will need to install z4root, probably by clicking on the .apk file you downloaded. After that, it will appear as a program in your launcher. Run it, and click the button to root your phone. There have been reports of it not working on 2.2.1 firmware, but on 2.2 you should be fine.
Once z4root has done its thing, you should be able to install the unlocker, and run that one too. Sorry, I can't help you too much with this one - my phone was unlocked to start with - just make sure you follow the instructions carefully and you should be OK.
hi again i tried this and when i put my vodafone simm in it says no network coverage but when i type in

T-mobile G1 problem

I just bought a HTC G1 from an ebay user from USA.(I'm from Romania)
I did a hard reset on the phone and now when I put a sim I need to enter the unlock code and can`t turn wireless on if I chose not to enter the unlock code.
Are there any option on how to unlock the phone without the code, or to get past the 'fresh start' screen?
Two things you can do:
1st, contact the user back that sold you the G1. Ask them to obtain the unlock code from T-Mobile (USA) to send to you.
2nd, you can obtain the unlock code yourself by purchasing the unlock code from one of the site.
There are no option to unlock the phone without the unlock code. (as far as I know)
And what about the activation screen? how can i get past it?
Once you get the unlock code and put it in. You can activate your google account with your data plan. You might have to setup your APN setting thou.
Another thing you might or have to do is downgrade and root your phone. Then flash the custom ROM of your choice.
Done unlocking & activating, now it keeps restarting, what can I do? Also the battery lasts 1 day max
// also the screen remains black when I try to unlock (sometimes)

First you want to find out if you are still on stock or you have a custom ROM on your G1.
If you have stock, then you have to root your G1 first.
If you phone has a custom ROM then you G1 has already been rooted. You can load other ROM that you want.
I tried to update to 1.6 but it says error line 1 etc. all the time.
Please help
I`m on stock & when I try to root it says to force close app
Also, i`m running android 1.5 & marketplace is beta & I can`t see all the stuff
Ohh! Boy here we go. You'll need to downgrade to RC29 (since your G1 is from US). Don't worry about the unlock. Once unlocked it stay unlock.
First you want to get ADB setup on your PC and have it setup with your G1.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
Once you have that going then you can start with the downgrading to RC29. After you have downgraded, you will have to go through the activation screen again.
Once the activation screen is done, then you can do the rooting process.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/04/26/how-to-root-the-htc-g1dream/
After you have rooted, then you can flash the custom ROM.
Done, the phone is rooted but now I have some other issues with it.
First, my earpiece dosen`t work
Second, my screen sometimes dosen`t come 'back to life' when I try to unlock it

[Q] I think i bought a bricked X8 - help!

hi,
I bought a X8 by mail delivery from the internet and got a bricked phone (so it seems)!
Symptom is phone doesn't connect to GSM network, and although i can scan for networks i can't connect to them. Tried several networks, same result. Everything else seems to work fine.
I'm completely newbie to Android phones, and only bought this one to try to avoid to stay behind, but this was a lousy way to start. I've been browsing through the forum, but there's too much info which only makes it more confusing to me.
I tried connecting the phone to S1tool and msm7227setool but i can't find the SEMC flash drivers, and although i browsed through the forum stickies for them i didn't find them.
So, my questions are:
1- Can someone provide a link to the drivers?
2- Is the following link the best way to solve my problem?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1304258&highlight=no+network
3- I also want to debrand the phone, from the 360 apps i assume the phone is from vodafone. Can you recommend a fast ROM with full features support? And a good noob proof flash tutorial..
4- Will any of the above operations remove my SP unlock?
Sorry if most (or all) of this questions are a repetition of past threads, but starting with a phone this way, i honestly feel like a donkey looking at a palace! (Portuguese proverb, not sure you'll understand)
Thanks, Regards!

Thanx for clarifying that.
But, if i update the phone via PCC, won't i lose the sp unlock? I'm saying this cuz i read that the no network problem is due to sim lock protection.

sp unlock? You mean "SIM unlocked"?
No, you won't lose the unlocked SIM by simply flashing back to Stock through PC Companion (in case PCC tells you that there's no update available you need to resort to the Flashtool method).
As for the drivers ... best method would be to install PC Companion. However, if you don't want that crapware on your system I can upload you the drivers (out of PCC) in a ZIP - then you have to point Windows manually to the directory so it can find the appropriate driver (EDIT: shouldn't be much of a trouble if you're familiar with installing drivers by pointing Windows to the directory or the INF file).
The only situation where you might lose your SIM unlock is at unlocking the boot loader to enable installation of custom kernels, but before you head into that you better check the manufacturing date of your phone (sticker below the battery) and then look through this forum to work out if it's a candidate for hard bricking or not.

Yup, it says up to date, just clicked repair to see if it works. crapware.. lol, yeah i'd appreciate that zip file, thanks.
I think the issue is exactly that, a bad boot loader unlock, at least all symptoms point to that.. all i see in no network threads seems to be pointing there.

Errr... no. A "unsuccessful" boot loader unlock would turn your device into a hard brick (no lights, no vibration, no screen). As you're able to boot up into Android the bootloader and kernel seems to be intact.
IF the previous owner (in case you bought it used) tinkered around with boot loader unlocking ...
Use the s1tool to verify if the boot loader is locked or not. If it's unlocked simply follow the tutorial in the Development section to relock the boot loader or try the trick deedii posted about first (she had the same problem that GSM radio went dead after unlocking the boot loader).

Holy crap!
Thanx for the zip btw..
I hit Repair in PCC and it re-flashed the phone. Now, instead of no network, the phone doesn't recognize ANY SIM card!!
I checked boot loader with S1tool, and the phone is locked (i see R).
I'm starting to think maybe it's a hardware problem and not from ROM.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Yes, the "R" means the boot loader is locked.
As for the mSD card ... here's where we enter "trouble reloaded":
- What card? Class? Size? Brand?
- Does the card hold any important data? If not try to reformat the card (FAT32!!!). If Android refuses to format the mSD simply use a card reader and re-format the mSD in Windows.
EDIT: Also, just to make sure everything's vanilla: could you please take a look into Settings -> About phone to confirm you're running the genuine SE baseband/kernel and not some custom kernel?
EDIT 2: Errrrrrrrr.... never mind ... I somehow misread "SIM card" as "SD card". My fault!

Yes, that's definitely the genuine baseband and kernel.
However, no matter how hard I think it through I don't see a good reason why it won't accept ANY SIM card, as a SIM unlock (or carrier/operator unlock if you want to put it that way) is as good as permanent unless you play around with unlocking the bootloader and either do something wrong or face the problem that it suddenly reverts back to the original SIM lock (in case it got unlocked and didn't ship unlocked by default).
The only problem I know about is ... if you live in a region where you would actually need a E15a baseband but happen to have the E15i baseband (you know, has to do with the frequencies that get used to transmit between your phone and the tower) flashed - or the other way around - you won't be able to connect to the GSM/3G network - but even then the phone won't reject the SIM card but simply fail to find any network.
In that case the problem resolve would be as easy as swapping out the baseband through flashing by Flashtool.
Good morning,
This keeps getting more and more confusing... thank god you've been such a valuable help BJ!
Dunno if it's "don't accept SIM" as much as don't recognize them.. I usually remove PIN codes from all my SIM's but today i've popped a new one to see if anything different happened.. The phone asked me for pin and validated it, but after this it doesn't recognize it anymore, i get a SIM with a red "!" on top of it in the upper right corner of the screen (same icon you get without SIM in phone).
As for all the other cards, it doesn't appear such icon, the phone starts normally and then asks for language and after asks to "insert SIM and restart phone"..
I don't think baseband is the problem, i think it's definitely related to SIM card reading.
NOTE: Before seemed irrelevant but now seems important to say, before, when i scanned for networks and tried to connect to one (same from SIM), phone gave me a message saying something like "your SIM card doesn't allow connecting to this network".
The problem seems to be definitely SIM card reader, the big doubt is if it's HW or SW.
My best guess is SW, because he can read PIN's but then just locks.. Where is the SIM card reader "driver"? baseband, kernel, ROM? should i try to update all those?
Thanks again!
hello again,
i found this in SETool forum which seems to be exactly my problem.
E15i - (x8) it doesn't read sim card and hangs during unlocking
I've had a problem with XPERIA X8 (E15i) for a long time now and I can't fix it.
I was trying to unlock it. I updated Android to v. 2.1. I have credits, I turn on debugg mode, I installed drivers. I push 1,2,5 and press Unlock/Repair.
Unfortunately it didn't finish, the program froze and switched off (on Vista). It took 5 credits. After turning it back on it wouldn't log to the network, even though it saw the network. But it shows that the phone is unlocked. By Setool I installed the version form after the update. After that it stopped detecting the sim card.
In hosting I read that I should repeat the unlock. I reinstalled the drivers, downloaded setool's previous version (v1.1106), but the program hangs every time in the same place and it doesn't go to the end (see screen below). With v1.1107 there's the same problem. I tried on Vista and XP – no difference. I installed setool on my other computer, where there are no boxes, drivers or antiviruses and still I couldn't succeed.
Does anyone have some expirience with the x8?
Thx in advance for help.

Sim toolkit is on every phone, not only on vodafone
Been reading more and more, and this seem to be a very common issue in SETool SIM unlocking. can anyone suggest a solution?
Thanks.
Hello again,
I've been trying to run msm7227 setool2 and semc, but seem to be getting nowhere.. enters debugging mode and nothing else. What am i doing wrong?
Also, i've read in the following thread that sometimes boot is unlocked and S1tool says it's locked, but i can't find SEUS to download anywhere in the forum..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1404148&highlight=sim+card
HEEELLP!!!
Thanks.
Hi, madz ...
To pull it together:
- The "SIM reader" is a software that comes as a part of Android in the form of a system app (inside /system/app). You can't exchange the related parts as they are specific to the Android version, in case your thoughts are running into this direction.
- The problem with "SEtool" is more like this ...
Let us assume the phone was originally SIM locked (bound to only allow SIMs of a specific operator/carrier) and then got SIM unlocked. The original SIM lock will jump back into place once the the boot loader got unlocked.
My observation is that this problem should actually go away once the boot loader got re-locked again. That being said I also read various threads where the SIM lock didn't vanish and the phone had to be unlocked anew.
On another note, it also depends on how the phone got unlocked ... there's a difference if it got SIM unlocked through SEtool or through Omious (<-- I hope it's spelled right)
The one fact that remains: simply querying the boot loader status ("R" vs "r") does not make the SIM lock to fire.
- SEUS ... well ...
I found Update Service (SEUS) 2.11.10.7 in the depths of my hard drive. Going to slap it on MultiUpload for you in a minute - though I can't guarantee that it still works; all I know is that SEUS got discontinued (or something along that line). Wait for the edit of the download!
EDIT: MultiUpload swallowed the file --> Download link

Shouldn't you connect the phone in flash mode instead of USB-Debugging mode?
Flash Mode means:
- Pull the USB cable out of your computer but leave it attached to the phone
- Turn the phone OFF
- Start the software
- Press the Back button and connect the USB cable to the computer
KEEP THE BACK BUTTON PRESSED UNTIL THE PHONE IS RECOGNIZED!
(Note: Windows may want to install the "SEMC Flash Device" driver)
Hi BJ,
The phone is not locked! it accepts pin from all networks, but after this, simply doesn't read the cards anymore. I only talked about this because the thread i found in SETOOL forum explains in detail what's happening to me.
I dunno if what happens to people who have no network or sim locked due to bad boot loader unlock is the same or not. It would be nice to know, but in my thread no one except you steps up.
If unlocked, i believe it's SETool and not Omnius because i only see threads with this issue in SETool support (dozens of complains) and found nothing in Omnius.
I still believe that maybe there's a solution other than unlocking it again, but due to inexperience i fail to see it.
about msm7227: i'm sorry, i meant flash mode, and it detects the phone, sometimes.. but always hangs in 2nd line (can't remember what said, but i'll try it again in a while and post here).
Where exactly is the phone unlocked? ROM, kernel, baseband? Do you think re-flashing it could solve the problem?
Thanks again friend!
Regards.

My X8 came SIM unlocked by default. Since it's old enough, and therefore safe for boot loader unlocking, I gave it a try (even been as daring as to unlock while having GDX v021 flashed).
Connected and checked with s1tool that it's suited for unlocking: Pass
Unlocked the boot loader: Pass
Booted up (SIM does not have PIN1 set)...
Connecting to the GSM Network: Pass
Connecting to the APN for 3G Internet access: Pass
Reboot (to make sure it didn't brick): Pass
Re-locked boot loader: Pass
Checked with s1tool that boot loader is locked: Pass
Device still able to connect to GSM/3G: Pass
I didn't try to flash a custom kernel but just stayed with the stock kernel. During the whole testing scenario - from unlocking to re-locking - I didn't have any problems with GSM/3G network connectivity or troubles reading the SIM.
Like I wrote above the PIN1 check was disabled because sometimes GingerDX shows the "Network unlock" screen after inputting the PIN ... that's more-or-less a bug workaround.

Thank you for correcting the spelling of "Omnius" ... I was typing it from the top of my head and failed to recall how it's spelled.

Where exactly is the phone unlocked? ROM, kernel, baseband? Do you think re-flashing it could solve the problem?

If you refer to "how is the SIM lock lifted" then I think the best persons to answer this question are the guys who cracked the boot loader. I don't know enough about how the low-level init of the phone really works ... the boot loader guys aren't very chatty about telling us how the low-level boot of the X8 works.
Since, in my case, the SIM unlock prevails when flashing a custom ROM on top of the stock kernel (keep in mind I never flashed a custom kernel, so I never altered the "baseband" partition) the unlock can't reside in the ROM partitions.
But ... as the problem only arises when tinkering around with the boot loader but didn't affect my phone during boot loader unlock / re-lock ... and this is now purely guessing ...
The boot loader unlock only replaces the boot loader binary with a altered one. So if the thing that tells the phone that it's SIM unlocked resides in the part of the NAND where the boot loader / kernel / baseband is located it can only be a digital certificate or some sort of a binary that gets loaded through "Stage 1" init (during which the boot loader and kernel gets loaded and all the security checking stuff happens). It can't be in the higher init routines where the initialized kernel is boot strapping the ROM as that would disable the SIM unlock when flashing a custom ROM.
If blagus or the kernel devs have some ideas it would be great to read a few lines from a source knowing about the low-level init routines (to actually understand how the X8 comes to life once the power button is pressed).
On another thought ... the msm7227 CPU also must have some kind of firmware (think of it similar to a BIOS like a PC has) to init itself and the hardware ... maybe the SIM unlock is somewhere in there?
EDIT: On a third thought ... it would seem almost logical that the SIM unlock stuff is stored somewhere in the "security" related part of the NAND (somewhere deep down at the low-level init). If the phone came locked and got unlocked at some point the original SIM lock will most likely spring back into place at boot loader unlocking - so the SIM locked/unlocked thingy has to be somewhere in the low-level boot init; otherwise it wouldn't disable a "soft unlock" once the boot loader got unlocked and replaced past the cracked one which bypasses a whole lot of the security checks so unsigned boot binaries (kernel) can be loaded and executed.

Reactivation Lock Bypass (Samsung Account)

Hi everybody, I don't know if this will help all you but this is what worked for me (Android 6.0.1):
1. On the setup wizard (after factory wipe), connect to internet (wifi/data)
2. Select "Emergency call"
3. Call to any valid number (112 for example)
4. When the calls start swipe to the left on the dialing screen and you will see message and browser displayed (in my case the message method doesn't works).
5. Select browser.
6. Go to google.
7. Search for Package Disabler Pro 9.8
8. Download it and install it.
9. Open it and search for "Samsung account".
10. Click on Clear Data and then Disable.
11. Go back to google and search for QuickShortMaker
12. Install it and open it.
13. Search for "Setup Wizard", it will expand.
14. Select the one with ".setupwizards.SetupExitActivity"
15. Done! You can now use the phone and restart.
Ok after this you can go and check that there is no Samsung account displayed (Settings>Accounts), buuuuut, you can't add it . What I did was:
1. Go back to Package Disabler Pro and enabled "Samsung Account".
2. Then go to Settings>Back up and reset
3. Factory data reset
4. Asked for Samsung account and I inserted my real account.
5. Done, now I can sync with my account.
The oooooooonly issue that I can't figure out it's the way to remove the "Reactivation lock" from Settings>Lock screen and security>Find my mobile.
Well that's all hope it works for you guys.
If this doesn't work for you, you can check out unlockjunky, they will definitely be able to do it.
Good luck!!

112
What ever you do, absolutely do not dial for example ( 112 )
Turns out 112 will connect you to your local emergency dispatch.....
Ask me how I know...
please change your number in the above post for newbies who may be trying to learn and have no clue what these phones are capable of...
Thanks

Mate, you are an absolute legend! I've been searching for 8hrs looking for a solution after hard resetting my phone and being unable to get past the Samsung Account lock afterwards (even though I had the right username & password!) About fifty useless/outdated YT videos & a few hundred websites/forums later - none of which were helpful, I finally stumbled across your post, despite it not showing up 8hrs ago when I came straight to XDA hoping to find a solution first.
I have an improved method for #2, 3 & 4 of your post and will add all relevant info soon (just need some kip now that the panic is over). I'll also expand a little on some details and include further options which worked in my particular case, but all n'all - you're an absolute legend mate and I'd be screwed & still panicking without your shared info. Huge thanks...
Nice meme dude ya got me

You have to dial an emergency number or this trick doesn't work. Its not practical for most folks but if you are worried about dialing an emergency number I'd recommend using a SIM out of a tablet that isn't phone number enabled.
its working for j7 prime bypass samsung account

Look for Aptoide apk download it to sd card and search for package disabler in this app and install it or download and copy Pachkage disabler you your sd card and run via file explorer or download and run ES File manager as I did.
when i make the call my wifi gets turned off and wont come back on till i restart the phone. i managed to open the browser but the wifi is off so i cant do anything after that except cry.
stock 5.0
Did you get it figured out I got the edge 6 plus to work fine now it was one of the tougher ones and I've done a few on some newer models what are you stuck on?
I thought the Combination Firmware would reset the FRP lock by default after being installed.
first thank you for sharing ur experience and i want to add
that i done it step by step and it works nicely but still cant remove the reactivation
and here is how iv done it after i bypassed it using ur method
i flashed a lower modem file from stock rom N910VVRU2BOG5 which is 5.0.1
at this point my imei went off
so i went for full flash by N910VVRU2BPA1_N910VVZW2BPA1_N910VVRU2BPA1_HOME. which is 5.1.1 and did full hard reset
then i just signed in with the last Samsung account i used with ur method earlier and it passed so now i can easly remove reactivation mark , unlock and root then make it Arabic .
thx again
Did you ever post up the suggested steps to replace #'s 2-4 in the original post above? I'm not seeing them anyplace. This would be a big help. Thanks.
When I call I can't swipe to the right is there another way to open browers
I successfully used this to gain access to my phone but I believe that if I power cycle it I will be locked out again. Is there any way to remove or change the samsung account now that I am in? The options are greyed out in settings.
ADB and Root.
Hey, I have been working on these for a while keep finding new things each time I try to remove Reactivation Lock. However I was wondering if I show you guys how to enable ADB with RSA Key, and Root the device. Could someone show me how to remove the Reactivation Lock using root. I used other methods on older and newer models, but these S5's are the only ones giving me issues.
After weeks of going mad trying different solutions I've found online, here's what worked 100% for me just last night:
Login to Samsung Account on other device, select Password & Security, enter password then choose Devices. LOG-OUT of your S6 Edge if listed, confirm. Next change password - doesn't matter what, can even change it back afterwards.
Flash Lollipop (I used G925VVRU4BOK7)
Wipe Data/Cache
Boot fresh Stock firmware, enter/confirm network details, at Reactivation Lock prompt, enter user & updated password. Sign-in....
Settings -> Lock Screen & Security -> Find My Mobile. Unselect Reactivation Lock and enter password... voila!
Works for anybody else??

Removing Carrier Lock?

The Alcatel 5033T (Telstra) I have is Telstra-locked to the point that most online unlock-code providers can't get a code to free it up. The only places which say they can do it require you to bring it in (they're in other states) or they want you to install Teamviewer (!) and they'll do it remotely.
I'm sure this is a FAQ on other phone models, but I see nothing for the Alcatel 1 here yet. What are the chances someone with past experience on ADB can figure out how to get this working with a non-Telstra SIM?
Did you manage to sort this
How to mount sd card
saw someone posted this, any Guru can verify the steps? or make it clearer?
**********************************************************************************
On the 5033T fastboot will flash only the system.img not the boot or recovery
image,so Magisk or TWRP cannot be flashed via fastboot. Also to flash via SPflashtool for the MT6739 you now need a custom DA and Auth file for that phone.
The downloaded edited 5033D system image will give you root access but install
RootCheckerBasic app to check as sometimes the root access disappears.
The phone modem is in the vendor.img partition and so should be unaltered as you
have flashed the system.img partition only.Your bands should be unaltered. Install the MTK Engineering Mode apk and use the bandmode function to see the bands. (Phone Developer option must be on(Tap build number untill developer options appear)).
Now that you have root access you can now network unlock the phone. Using ES File Explorer or Root Explorer. In the phone /vendor/protect_f/md you will see a file ST33_004. This file determines whether the phone is network locked.
If you get this file from an unlocked phone and put it in place of the one
in the locked phone the phone will be then unlocked and vice versa.
Download the 5033A firmware from the Needrom site. From the download get the protect1.img (in another files). Download to your PC the Ext4Unpacker tool.
Use the tool to extract the ST33_004 file from the 5033A protect1.img .
This is the unlocked ST33_004.
Using ES or Root Exp rename the existing ST33_004 in the phone as ST33_004bac
and copy the new ST33_004 file into the directory. The phone will now accept
non Telstra/Boost SIMs .
Also download the Mobile Upgrade S Gotu2 v5.3.5 tool to your PC. This is the TCL(i.e.=Alcatel) official firmware upgrade tool. It replaces the firmware in
your phone with the latest version on their server for your phone. For a stock
phone it will upgrade to their latest stock version.
For the 5033T+5033D 'hybrid' ,when started the tool appears to be downloading
the 5033T firmware from the server, so it seems that the tool could be used
to return the phone to stock, but this not tried or tested yet.

Where'd you find this? I'm willing to try 'cos it'll let me get my son off Telstra's overpriced plan and onto something affordable like Jeenee (which the rest of us are on). I've had this Telstra SIM for years so I was hoping they'd unlock the phone for me - after all, it was sent as a replacement for an older phone that'll be out of service when they retire some of the towers in our area - but when I call in to have them do that, they say they'll have to call me back and (of course) never do...

Any luck someone? I am unable to root it using kingroot
Yes
The Ozbargain thread now has a lot more info than it did a few months ago - I'm still working through it myself, but here's the link: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/446160
