Android, why all the hype? - Touch HD Windows Mobile ROM Development

I am constantly reading posts about android here and i cant understand why everybody is so excited about it. Ok, its linux, but so what. Its open-source, but so what. How many of users that are so desiring it has ever change one line of code in any software? 0.0001%? How many times have you edit some config file as there was no GUI to set it up from there? Do you actually know what the file is? And how to edit it without Word ? So what is SO cool about it? What is this great thing where the touch hd would be so great with it? I thought it was bragging but you can brag with iPhone, i dont think Linux will ever catch its look AND stability (actually imho linux is one huge pile of bugs that works together by pure coincidence). The amount of software that could be used on a phone is very inferior to Windows Mobile and iPhone, and shell is quite useless as on screen keyboard typing can be only meant as a joke (i actually had to buy myself a folding keyboard)... You like it becoase it is google? Some privacy concerned people would raise eyebrow... You dont like the manilla? What about this: http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/pocketpc-software/mobileshell/ ?
So what is so cool about android??
(running ssh to dragonfly bsd host and i really dont understand what linux on phone could be good for)

Well, basically, Linux and Linux-based systems allow you to polish those bugs. Which is one of the reasons Linux is as bug-free as you can get right now.
And most computer users don't make their own GNU/Linux distributions either, they download their favorite. I don't see why that wouldn't work in a PDA environment.

I don't agree with you. Android is a Rom-development for the Blackstone, so I agree his placement for this thread.
Back on-topic, I disagree with the fact of android being a spoiler to our Blackstone. Android is an open-source OS for Mobile Phones and I really would like a Android Rom for the Blackstone. Creating my own apps and stuff. I hope it will be developed some day

Personally I want it because its smother than winmo, even the old halfworking port feels really smoth and more robust flipping through menues etc. It has that stable feeling Iphone-OS has.
That beeing said, i love where the new manila and Winmo is heading. If they just speed it up and get rid of the flickering and ****ty looking graphics when opening applications it would be more attractive.

my dad recently bought the htc magic and i can understand whats the hype with android.
its a very nice system for a phone.
what i dont understand is that if you want it, why not buy an android phone? my next phone will probably by android, but for now i'm happy with WM. and i can guarantee you that never will android on a device like blackstone be as good as windows mobile. without the help of the manufacturer it is not possible to get a stable and fully working android port. waste of time. go get a hero.

windows mobile 6.1 the Suck

Is it me or is windows mobile the worst phone OS on the planet?
And the upgrade to v6.1 is actually WORSE. My power settings always reset, its real difficult to use mp3 as ringtones, the UI just sucks all over the place in so many ways. The java/midlet/IE install process is totally broken. Meh!
What do they smoke up in Redmond? Its called "**** software bud".

Yep....it's you.....and guess what....nobody is forcing you to buy a Windows Mobile device.....so either "suck" it up and learn how to use it, or buy something else.
Really. Mine is amazing! (SGH-I780) No problems with power settings. Maybe it is your unit.

so true. 6.1 is rock solid. TomTom picks up satellites signal a lot faster. Better battery life.
Yeah, mine is great also. Maybe it is a user problem?
I tell ya what, I've spent time with Palm, which isn't too bad but isn't WM, I've spent time with the Iphone, and let me tell you something, you have to ****ing install openssh on it to be able to ftp to the phone so that you can copy over any file that isn't a song or a pic. (I'm sure I could add a few commas in there) I've also used Symbian phone, which is like palm.. Hands down, right here right now, non come close to WM and what it can do and what you can do with it.
OP the Suck
I bought it b/c it was the least bad of the bunch. And also plan on whiping it with android if that day comes around fully.
I can hack on earth, wind, and fire but better systems allow me to intermediate that. MS just gets in the way, they really need a whole new UI injection.
It is so easy to bash M$.
My opinion, and that's all any of us have, is that Windows Mobile is the best mobile OS out there. It allows me to do a lot more with my phone than any other OS.
I think doofus had seconds on his retard sandwich today.... what an idiot.

First it was the "worst phone OS on the planet" and now it's the "least bad of the bunch".....so which is it?.....the worst, or the best(least bad)? Seriously....your credibility is going downhill every time you open your mouth.....which isn't too great considering you didn't start with any.
Sorry valt, didn't mean to fire up the flame bait. I think AOL chat is still open for business ...
i think that as just an operating system in general WM is kinda crap... but one has to understand that it is mobile os and compared o the rest of the mobile os's its the best i was just nieve in buying this thinking/ hearing WINDOWS and not the mobile part so much...my only quip tho, is that since this is windows MOBILE the mobile functions should be better than that on a normal phone (not a hinderance on performace, i mean this thing has a dedicated phone processor and seperate media proc. right? i think on the msm7xxx series they did not properly implement them or something..)... some mobile phone functions are really good on WM but other like the complexities you have to go through to do normal stuff sometimes.... oh well
I heard they are completely revamping the windows UI stuff in wm7 + 8 but that is not coming out until 2010 which is saaad.
Dude I have been using WM based mobiles since 2003 and I think WM is by far the best OS in the market, its been built for advanced users or people with fair knowledge of computing, if you think it is too much for you to handle why dont you buy a regular handset like NOKIA 3310 or if you think you are advanced enough get one of those crapy symbian mobiles.....

Wait just a minuet Your giving this guy "Credibility" you must be feeling kind today. I to wondered how he got the "Least bad of the bunch" and still had the worst phone on the Planet. Maybe he should try another retail store with a larger selection! Or maybe he just a bit hard to please! Well I could not live with out my tilt as I felt the same about my Hearms, and when I can hide enough funds away from the warden to get a Diamond, I will feel the same about that. I guess I like the platform or maybe I am easy to please. One thing if I didn't like a Rom I would find a group of Developers ,Join their forum, learn how to cook and flash my own custom roms and create what ever I wanted. Hey wait a minuet that's what I did! Maybe Rocken7 should join XDA go to WiKi learn how to flash find a rom he is Happy with and stop making these silly post, but that's not what he did. Now this is not a burn although Rocken7 you have walked into a room with a bulls eye on you back and said "BURN ME"! with the comment you posted! so beware! We are watching! It might just be that you are a tad to critical! I am sure we have everything you need to make your device what you need it to be. Hope you can make the best of what you got! Good Luck!
Ed...
It's as simple as what you want your phone to do and what you're able to do with it. So many people rant and rave about Wm devices on these forums, which are really designed to educate, illuminate, and progress our devices. People who ***** about there new device probably should not have purchased it in the first place! Would I recommend a Hermes, kaiser or diamond to my Dad, Mom or Grandma? Depends if you are wearing Depends. Or to my buddy that's been using a Razr for the past 3 years? They would look like a monkey trying to open a coconut. Two of my best friends just got the Lg Vu and don't even know how to log onto the basic medianet. It's funny how everyone I've caught using a Kaiser "Tilt"; they always tell me how much they hate it and I laugh inside; It's simply not the phone for you; simple as that
I love mine, but I love fiddling with things
There's no way on earth I'd recommend one to anyone who's just after a phone, because (out-of-the-box) it's awful.
I enjoy the customisation aspects of mine. But there are still some 'phone' aspects which I feel are seriously lacking. The fun (for me) is finding stuff to make it work the way I want it to.
Windows mobile is a great operating system, functionality wise, but its interface sucks.
I run PointUI on my phone, which means I can access most features and functions very quickly using just my thumb, without the horrible WM interface. With this, most functions would be easy to use even for a n00b with no WM experience.
The fact that I can run PointUI on WM, or Throttle launcher, or SPB mobile shell, or a number of other options, is what makes WM so great - it can be made to do what people want. Still would have been better if Microsoft had focused on the UI from the beginning.
The great functionality of WM does not necessitate a terrible interface. It will be interesting to see what happens with WM7 & newer versions now Microsoft has to focus on the UI thanks to Apple & others leading the way.

Exactly ! WM6.1 is a lot better than 6.0 and most of all 5 ... let's focus on the future and the juicy stuff Apple brings us.

Will Android ever function on HD?

Several months have flown, I see yet no progress,
Android remains elusive, whilst I remain depressed.
Several threads and comments, yet nothing to download,
Will Android ever surface? will it ever blah, blah....
Frankly, I am getting bored of trying a multitude of cooked ROMs from various Kitchens - the taste is becoming singular. What I need is fire in my curry, what I need is Android - fully functional, fully useable, not half baked, fully caked. Give to me Android!
Please vote, do you think any Android version, in it's fully usable state, will ever make it onto the HTC HD?
Also, If you could give some good reason(s) for your choice, it would be most uplifting/depressing.

Lack of money means I can't escape my HTC HD.
Human greed makes me want something better. Android.
Well i am not sure that Android is really something better. Yeah it is open source and it would be cute to play with it, but how much people here can code? There is some stupid hype around Android i cant really understand but i KNOW I have bought touch HD becoase of windows mobile.
i doubt it, well not any time soon anyway, a Touch HD replacement will be out there before that happens and to be honest, im not at all sure why people think its so good, none of the apps i need work on it and there are no alternatives. i think thats the only major draw back, since in most other respects it "just works ok" which intrestingly enough is my opinion of Windows Mobile, "it just works" but that works with a lot more and that is why it has my vote.
Reasons WM might still be better.
It will be years untill Android application development will get to where WM appz are.
There are so few mobiles with Android, that developers are not even attracted to create appz for a considerably smaller amount of people.
It might have a cleaner core and better resource management but we don't even know that as a fact. And even that won't count that much. Compare pc linux with windows, even though linux is a lot better at multitasking and stability, people don't use it in their home because it lacks in diversity of applications.
My oppinion: useless Thread.....
If you doubt that the two running projects can finish it learn c++ and help them coding.
Yep another useless noob thread!
Tend to agree with shruff, no need to post your frustation upon everyone else. Instead, why not assist or help getting Android onto the HD, wouldn't this be better?

Windows Phone 7 will forbid things like Sense UI/ TouchFlo /TouchWiz

I read this on a German page. Original source is on Chinese. What do you think about it. For me that means either the UI of WP7 will be bomb or Windows Phone will vanish completely. Think also that HTC will move over to Android or stuff like that when they cannot use their good UI with long tradition.
I think that it's too early to know if these things are true or not.
I don't think Microsoft will just kick in the butt all those developments like HTC TF3D which is their very serious partner right? And I personally think Panels are great development too.
But honestly I hope so much they will never follow Apple route
and leave it open, bacause it's one of the WM powers.
It's rather a question how well Microsoft will react to the situation and how
well will fight with Android increasing popularity.
i think they will keep it similar to the way things work now. ms will re-design all the menus etc and how everything works. they will also have there own flashy ui, but there will be a option to turn it off like 6.5, this will leave it open to companies like htc and samsung that like adding there own ui's.
i do believe that microsoft will add more rules to what can be changed/modded (like other os have) so that everything runs well and looks good.
I actually understand Chinese, so I actually did understand the source link.
First paragraph was about the mentioned closure of external UI development, and the 2nd was basically speculating that since HTC loves Android, HTC and Microsoft 'alliance' of sorts is gone.

Fair enough - more than sufficient to convince me not to bother adopting WinMo7
The only real change since WM2003 was in WM5, where the flash storage became non-volatile. Everything else since has been mostly tinsel-town.
Even the addition of the GID (GPS Intermediate Driver) killed some of the useful but older GPS programs which became unable to connect to the GPS
Speculations - these are only speculations.
as there is wm7 code in the new versions of htc sense i think they are talking rubbish as htc and other wm phone companies must know what the deal is by now.
HTC would rupture a blood vessel if they couldn't stick Manilla on anything WinMo 7.

Symbian on Xperia X1

You can make yourself also clear in replying a normal message instead of this. But I got it, close if you like.
Well.. symbian UIQ3 was quite decent on my p990i (after every update )
It ran coreplayer just like on my xperia .. probably it had a working hardware acceleration.
i didnt see anything great about symbian when i had the p910i,p990i,p1 but then when i sold my p1 to a friend and got a xperia, then playing around with the p1 i remembered i didn't get as many issues as i do with the x1, and then missing gdesk and myphone explorer i had been conditioned to it.i had been thinking about getting a p1 again or get a android phone.
i've been long time ago using symbian
no offence but symbian, the feature isn't complete compare to winmo
and i think its more fun when i use winmo...
no hard feelings but i can scarcely imagine why on earth would someone using a ppc/smart phone would like to use such a ""WONDERFUL"" system haha...
As I can see here everyone is stuck on WinMo.
For God's sake, what is so great with windows mobile. I think, nothing. Very slow, not so user friendly, cpu and memory demanding and many other issues that I've seen in my, (considerably big), experience. Opposite to WinMo, symbian runs on slower CPU-s very smootly, does not need so much memory in order to be operable, and yet it is enough customisable. At leest according to me.
And after all, symbian apps can be developed by third parties 'cause it is open source, as android is, but for winmo the one needs to pay to Microsoft if wants to develop any app.
That is what is so great about symbian in compare to winmo.
The only adwantage of winmo is that this Os is realy high customisable and you can do any makeup that will work. But question is:
What do you like more package or its content???
Thanks for reading this !

Obviously, you know nothing on what you are talking about. U don't need to pay anything to develop app for WM as EVC are free download.
symbian is an very outdate POS. Not until recently their S60 v5 start having touchscreen support, but software support still rather limited.

Can't agree more! I remember I tried my friend's N95 couples years ago (which was the TOP of the line Nokia phone at that period). It crash everytime I tried to use it's built-in GPS software (and I tested it after hard reset). What a piece of ****!
Even Nokia is dumping Symbian for it's upcoming smartphone series. Why would anyone want it over WM?? WM is not perfect but it WAY more advance than Symbian, and it suit my current needs most.
iPhone is good for it's UI, smoothness, user friendly, and first hand experience.
Andriod is good for it's openness, future potential, and google support.
WM is good for customization, lots of useful softwares (if you know how to look), best GPS software support.
Symbian?? Good for nothing!

A quandary. Again.

Previously: Owned HTC HD7, Windows Phone 7 device.
Current status: Own a RaZr running CM9. (Android 4.0.4)
Ok...
Here I am again at that crossroad. Where to go from here. I am in a genuine dilemma here. I have had a WP7 device and I loved the simplicity and fluidity that kicks Android in the nuts. (Let's be honest.)
The problem is, like they say, once a flasher, always a flasher. I have played around with RaZr a lot! I have had custom ROMs, mods, tweaks, apps...you name it. And this is where I want/wish/feel/need to stop. I am done with Android. It takes waaay tooo much of my time. There are so many tweaks and mods that it leaves very little family/social time. Android is very customizable. Like totally. I can have HTC OS/apps on a MOTO. LG homescreen on HTC. Bla bla...it goes on...
You would ask then why did I shift from WP7 to Android. Good question. The itch to flash a ROM, the high you get when you have another device's UI, an app that you love...all of that. The dev scenario on the WP front it almost negligible. I am again being honest. And I don't even have to mention how it is on Android front.
But, like I confessed, I am done. What else do I do now...?
On the other hand, WP8 is fresh, new and beautiful. I like it. Another thing, I had many apps that I thought I would love running once I get my Android. I did, only for a month. The excitement died with the same speed it was born.
So, I will conclude this with a question.
How will my experience be different from WP7 and more importantly, Android. I want a simple, fast, and innovative OS. But what is the future of WP? Is it going to be as big as Android? Apart from the resizable tiles, is there a lot more than what was there when I had it?
Footnote: I use phones for email, staying connected on social platforms, staying updated with all the latest tech news and most importantly, books. I like to read a lot. And of course Music. So is the WP8 for me? OR Android is my best bet?
PS: Trolling and sarcasm will NOT answer my questions. So please avoid it. I am looking for people who are genuinely interested in sharing info to make WP8 my next phone.
Thanks a lot for your time and patience.

Too many contradictions. You want new, fresh, different, but don't want to flash anything. You want wp8, but its not been released, so you are basing your wants on vapor ware.
For now, get an iPhone, then, if wp8 is ever released, read the hardware and software reviews, and weigh it again.
I don't like iPhones, but at this point, change and stability is all you need.

I don't like iPhones, but at this point, change and stability is all you need.

Thanx for your reply. To begin with, I hate Apple to the core. So that's out of the window. I would rather stick with my RaZr. Thanx anyways...

WP8 will have many new features:
Bluetooth File Transfer, Real Multitasking, 3rd Party Info on the Lockscreen etc..
Just browse through WP7 sites like www wmpoweruser com or http://www.1800pocketpc.com/...
I'll go for WP8...
