XDA Dream Development Application - G1 Apps and Games

There should be an application in the market which would sync with the themes list and the roms list from the respective sections in the forum.
There, you would be able to sift through all of the roms and themes on your device, no problems!
When I saw the CyanogenMod Updater in the Market, the app came to me.
Im not too sure how we would be able to see all of the roms at the moment, but sites like AndroidSpin seems to have a good concept.
Any ideas, or developers?
I cannot develop, but I am learning.

Jordan! good to see you on here bro. as awesome as this would be, it would take some work. compiling all the roms into a database, and all the themes sounds easier said than done, but thats a alot of data. unless someone wants to host all this, aside from XDA, i dont see this happening. it does sound like a good idea though.

Start by saying Android on XDA because XDA is not Android, its HTC aka Winmo. So any app saying "XDA" will be including WinMo then there is no point to have an XDA app

maybe you guys can do something with the author of androidspin.com
he already has some kind of database.. maybe you guys can help eachother out

Sups, Palos! That's tight to see you here
AndroidSpin is a good place to start, for he has all of the roms cataloged already, it would be easier to start there and somehow incorporate it into an app.

Rom reviews

Hello all Chefs and Rom users, I wanted to know how would you like if someone started a thread or site where they do in depth reviews on roms, chefs, and apps for htc phones? Would you find this useful and would you be willing to post your roms on a site that does this? Would you be interested in paying for adverstisement? Would you like for a donation link to be placed in your review or section on the site? Rom users, how useful do you think this site will be? I am open to all comments and questions. Thank to all in advance.
I think that would be a great idea, especially for the people who arent sure which rom they want or what they want on a rom or the people that are new to this scene. Maybe the site could include a list of things that are included in the roms. Such as does it have the latest .net compact framwork and things like that. Also it could be broken down into which roms would be best for which versions of the rhodium. Like T-mobile, at&t, sprint, verizon. And there could be a rating system letting users rate the roms. Just a few ideas to throw at you.
Someone tried one of these threads here. I don't think it was useful at all.
My suggestion to noobs is this. Rather than learn about flashing different ROMs, learn how to quickly and efficiently backup and restore your device. Once you got it all down to about 15-30minutes, you can flash every single ROM out there and see for yourself which is right for you.

yeah i second this. The key thing about roms is that they differ in appeal for one person to the next. Most roms these days are nice and fast (certainly faster than stock) and so the additional factors may involve apps included, graphics and other features and although these are listed within the chefs thread as screenshots and lists, you only really know a rom is right for you once its in your hands and personally test-driven!
Agreed, it would be good to have an objective list of features of all current roms and comments of them in one place, however the info is already out there leaving the rest of the work up to the user!

I agree... With a UC cable ROM, a PC registry editor (CeRegistry, MobileRegistryEditor) and maybe SDConfig Builder along with PIM Backup I have it automated down to about 10 minutes...
i like it
as i have been flashing roms since the release of the original htc touch and have owned and flashed, hacked, and optimized just about every smartphone that has came out in america and some that havent, i consider myself a veteran and even i like to sometimes see how people feel about certain roms before trying them, i might be looking for a rom that does a specific thing very well and sometimes would like to know those strengths by reading about them first. thats just me, i dont think it would be a bad idea

I know what you mean. And I understand the intentions of everyone who starts one of these threads. But consider this:
-There are new ROM chefs popping up all the time.
-New releases of ROMs with multiple flavors are literally coming at a daily rate.
Who's going to keep track of all the chefs? Each chef may also release multiple ROMs. Who's going to keep track of all the ROM versions?
It's an impossible task, unless each chef voluntarily goes to a common thread to post about their own work. But frankly, I would rather the chef not waste their time doing that. I would rather them allocate their time to their ROM development.
Probably no one is going to argue that a review thread is a bad idea. It's a great idea in theory. But it just doesn't work in practice.
Why have a thread, wasn't he talking about a site akin to having a profile, like some kind of social networking site where each chef is regitered and releases their ROMS there?
ROMS can be reviewed, i.e. comments , requests etc

I am in the same boat I flash roms all the time, and love this forum, It would be nice to have an alternate way to read about rom, chefs, apps,Htc phones, rumors.
Something that goes more in depth.

I am talking about a site, not really a social networking site, because that will just grow too huge and make it hard for some users to be able to get the info they are looking for. I am thinking more like a blog. Where you can search info and find different articles. There would be polls on roms. The rom may be reviewed with general info and people can leave comments. I just think it may be a way to narrow down this info for users to easily get to. Some are intimidated by huge sites. The site will have other info ,but will also lean more towards roms and chefs. The site would benefit rom users and chefs.
cant cover all roms

Reading from 40 to 400+ pages of a thread just to see what the rom is about isn't something I look forward to. I would like it if they were categorized. For example, search filters for all the roms that have sense 2.1 or all the roms that have 2.5, etc. Roms that are made specifically for a carrier would also be a nice filter. I also think a really good idea would be to make a program with the purpose of benchmarking a rom just to try and test the speed of how fast the rom really is. There are many more things that can be done. I think thewingster.com is a great example of this, but it can be taken to another level to make it much easier for users. There are many roms not posted on that site, but the popular ones are there.
I agree with some of the ideas here - sometimes it's just not feasible to wade through hundreds of pages ... For those who come here maybe once a week like me, this would be a good way of getting up to date quickly and maybe some of the n00b questions wouldn't happen as a result? (even I know how to get AT&T keyboard and my country doesn't have AT&T )
Maybe an extension of the current XDA wiki? And promote the wiki a bit more on the front page. The threads as they are in the forums would still serve the same basic purpose - feedback and debate etc.
The obvious question though is "who's gonna do it?" as the information would get outdated fast, and we can't expect the cooks to do it as they do enough already. And the people in the best position to do this (ie. the hardcore guys who come here every day) may not want to.
It's an interesting idea though.

Yeah absolutely, but there would have to be at least some form of moderation / approval / cleanup process otherwise you will just get 500 comments that are "HAW DO I GET MY NOKIA TO DO TAHT" or "I BRICKED MY PHOEN COS I DIDNT READ" or "D/Ling NOW KAKAKA!!!!11" etc. (much like some of the threads here) And then a team has to put all this in place, keep the version numbers up-to-date, put screenshots up, etc. A news feed available via RSS would be great Remember that most cooks have at least 4 different ROMs available for each device at a time. (Manila 2.1, 2.5, Titanium, AT&T dialer, WM6.5, WM6.5.1-3 etc)
Right now there must be 20 - 30 different ROMs available just for the TP2. Someone with some level of trust would need to be in charge. To quote an old phrase, "Garbage In, Garbage Out" And it would always have to be up-to-date otherwise there is no point.
Don't get me wrong it would be good to see something like this, it's a great idea. Kinda like what would happen if there was a train wreck involving the wiki and the forum haha but I think you may be underestimating the amount of work it will take.
I've often thought it would be better to have multiple threads per ROM, one for reviews, one for bugs, one for general chat, etc. Maybe even a sub-forum for each cook or each ROM.
I dunno I never said I had the answers Just throwing ideas round

[Q] Master list of apk's

I can't seem to find a master list of apk's. I'm not talking about just stock, I mean everything. Kind of like a big giant kitchen. Not a list of what should be there, but actual download links. I am thinking the community would benefit from going to a single place to say "hmm....I'd like to try a different email.apk today." Basically a self-service kitchen. I can't count how many times I have to go pull apart a ROM to strip out the keyboard I like to put on my new ROM.
I think this will help cut down on many questions like "where can I find the patched mms.apk......" questions I see all the time. One place.
There is something similar to this in the Vibrant forum, but thought a giant consortium for Galaxy S would be best. Maybe it's something I'd have to work on, but I'd love to have it added to the WIKI. Think about it, you go download your favorite ROM/kernel, whatever, then add some spices........and voila! a kitchen without the hassle of downloading an entire ROM because you want to change one little thing.
Am I crazy? Have I really missed something in all my searches? Am I suffering from Search Overload?
Guess its time to bring a dead thread back to life because I was thinking about this myself just the other day... or is there already one that I'm missing?
I can and will host files if needed I have space and bandwidth that's going to waste.

I wasn't thinking paid appear, but like different free ones that are already out there or apk's for different modified apps that you see on different roms as long as their creators are cool with it
Yes! That's my point. I'd love to have a list of modified stock apps I can scroll through. You know, like a list of all the available email apps (stock, aosp, gingerbread, themed, etc...)The wiki seems like a good place to post it cause then themers/chefs can post up links to their work.
I honestly started digging around last weekend trying to collect links through the forums, but my god is that a lot of work! However thee pay off would be HUGE for all of xda. I just wish I had more time to start it AND all themers/modders/chefs would have to use it! That's what I feel would be more difficult than anything. Trying to get everyone to keep updating it. especially considering many frame work apps are "cross-platform" if you will, meaning an email app from a Desire might work in my Captivate. I'd like to try anyways.
Who's up for helping me? If only I was unemployed i'd have the time.
P.S. This made me happy seeing that someone agrees with me. I thought I had gotten totally ignored.
Sent from my pocket.
Well there are these threads:
[REF] **Captivate MOD/Theme Directory**
has some of the mods listed on there, not much tho (like ROM specific modifications I've seen around)
APK Download
a list of stock APK's and some non stock
So I think starting with this and adding some others would be a good list, especially stickied

making an "android" bible

I was Thinking about making a website that included all ROM/KERNELS/MODS/MODEMS/THEMES/BOOT-ANIM....
but to have it set up to multiple phones, the ultimate android bible. it would have a different section for each phone. and each ROM etc. would show the original post from the OP from xda, and then if they like it, they can click the link to go back to xda and download
i know i would already be able to do it for the vibrant (my phone)
but i was just curious if anybody else would be interested in doing this for the captivate..
it would have to be updated EVERYDAY, just like my VIBRANT BIBLE seen here
check it out, and if you think you can update daily with everything like i do, pm me and let me know. ( you dont have to organize it, i will have the website already organized and ready to go, all you have to do is post the ROMs etc. on it
EDIT: i am not advertising another website. i will not be drawing xda members away from xda, it will be just like a shortcut website leading to xda
There is already a site like this, its called XDA?

I suppose you have a point, but that seems like A LOT of work on your end updating it everyday for all the phones just to make it slightly easier for lazier people. I mean if you want to make your phone super awesome but don't want to do a little searching and research do you really deserve it??
I am completely self taught from reading xda, and I can do anything short of actual dev work, and I like that.
Not flaming at all, just kind of expressing an opinion.

well my main intension of making it IS to make it easier, but i wasnt planning on updating ALL the phones, i was going to try to find other people for different phones, so it wont make it any harder on me, i would just have to update the vibrant section (like im already doing, with my bible)... i expect very little income from it too, and all of it would be given to the people who are updating their phone sections

Some_sense_pro_v1

The Missing Rom, Sense 1, 2,3 are more than just HTC's UI. They are the way we Interact with our Incredible. As i write this There are Dev's and Dev teams making great strides on what they feel will be the greatest ROM. I have spent many years working on car project only to find that I am never happy with it. A good projects are never finished. With all the Sense rom's you get flavors of sense. With the senseless roms you get no Sense. With this rom you get some Sense and Launcher Pro. I have removed everything that doesn't work with Launcher Pro.
This is my first shot at a Rom, I plan to continue learning and devolving.
Sense widgets gone
Battery draining apps gone
Rom zip file is less than 110 MB
Sense clock and calander still there
camera works
If you want apps install them, the market is full.
Thanks to Jakresge, and every Dev. on this site.

Give it a chance guys. What have all sense 1 roms done? Changed little from stock? Exactly.
Youre looking at a crackflashing troll with ORD
No offense either bud. Its just... well... how exactly did you create "your ROM" on your phone?
Did you do a nand and then expect people to flash your back-up?
I don't understand what your doing or why. Normally ROM development takes place on a computer with some knowledge of how things work in these ROMs so we can make them better. And to make them more appealing to the other users of these forums or whoever.
Simply installing Launcher Pro or whatever else does not meen you have created a ROM. You have just installed Launcher Pro to a ROM, that is all.
However, if you would like to get into "real" ROM development there are a many valuable tools and resources in theses very forums to help you get started. Not to mention the devs that roam around here as well that would more than likely be willing to pull you to the side and help you out, provided you just ask them.
I want you to pay attention to this next part ok? The name of this website is called xda- wait for it... wait for it... "DEVELOPERS" yup, xda-developers. Not xda-I installed launcher pro to some craptastic ROM and I expect people to actually use it.com
Until then friend, maybe you should try something else.

Actually no. No offense bud but I don't think any of the seasoned devs on here use the kitchen to "build" a ROM. All the devs I work with manually port our ROMs peice by peice. Less error in the long run. The only reason I have ever used the kitchen is to deodex, zipalign and sign. I don't even hardly use it for that anymore. 9 times out of 10 the kitchen is not capable of doing the things that we do to our ROMs.
Never ment to crush dreams or whatever with my first response, I just think if we are going to do something that makes changes to or effects other peoples devices we should take the time and do it right.

Does that mean you didn't flash it? We all start somewhere. I did not mean to insult anyone. But there is a gap in the Rom selections. I like some of the sense apps that you lose when going senseless. I also don't like the button layout of sense. And the battery draining sense widgets. That is what I have done filled a hole

Good to know that your building your own ROMs. Its hard to tell from all thats posted who to trust as a dev and who's just a hack. No offense to the op. CaptainKrtek had a post in the Eris forum last year about what it takes to be a real dev here, wish I could find it again had some good info in it.

I will update my op I was more/less saying that I am new to this kinda thing and don't call myself a developer like a nurse doesn't call themselves Doctor, or a drafter doesn't call themselves an engineer.

If you really want to be a dev then start hanging out in chef central. The advice I had originally said came form captainkrtek actually was from cyanogen. I read it over a year ago when I was playing with dsixda's kitchen and thought of posting my own ROM. I posted a link below as I think its appropriate. Not sure why our dev section here isn't as nice as the Eris forum, they have a lot more info over there and being a former Eris owner I miss it.

Don't take this the wrong way, but creating a website for the Thunderbolt right now is like showing up late to a party with a 12 pack of Bud Light. Everyone will be happy you came, but you didn't bring anything that wasn't already there. Now, if you show up with a bottle of Single Barrel Jack Daniel's, you will be the shiznit at the party. So, if you can, please try to bring something different to your website. With that said, I'll be sure to keep checking on your site, it's always nice to have more people at the party.
COMING SOON!!!!!!!

To be honest, I love this idea. It's kind of hard to find updated roms and mods for any phone, not to mention the Thunderbolt. BeardedMan... Why is making a website like this, which will (hopefully) be a good hub for Thunderbolt mods and roms, getting "late to the party?" Is there another website out there like this, besides the android forms or Rom Manager? If there is, I'd like to know.
frankzua77, I would like to say thank you. If this website becomes what I think it will, it will make modding the Thunderbolt so much easier. If you need any help, just let me know.
I think the problem beardedman is referencing is the fact that there are a lot of android websites/forums already (even thunderbolt specific) and that there are a lot of much newer phones getting the attention. I have yet to not find anything I'm looking for without a 10 second search on Google. And the Thunderbolt is real close to being yesterday's superphone, if it's not already.
Plus, the problem with any of these sites is someone has to maintain it...which means sifting through posts, updating daily, etc. Unless it's a wiki that anyone can update, it's the same reason that the stickies all get outdated. Heck, it's the same reason I've started threads on many forums for many topics trying to compile information and eventually given up.
Now that I've rained on the parade and come off as a prick, I do applaud the effort...even if it doesn't stay updated or become the hub you imagine, at least you have an idea and a passion and are trying to do something about it. Don't lose that. And who knows...maybe it's just what the community needs

I have a "Thunderbolt" folder in my Bookmarks (just like I used to with my Incredible) that I have the five links in. I can open all the links and catch up with all the newest Thunderbolt news, for the most part. And the Thunderbolt is old news actually, just being honest.
TUDrewser understood what I meant, I wasn't being rude. ThunderNet, trying checking the above sites, I bet you'll find answers to whatever questions you have.

Please see my sig..
Users can submit a MOD, Downlad mods or whatever right from the web.
Still a WIP, but just needs attention.
Not knocking this idea at all, but should really consider opening it up to a wiki format and not center only on the thunderbolt.
!
I really appreciate everyone that makes their point, I am currently working on the page. One of my goals is to have videos that can show you a ROM even before you consider downloading it. I know we are focusing on the tbolt, who knows maybe later on this expands to having other phones and stuff...
I need your help on deciding on a domain name! Right now im using a free domain service but I would like to purchase a domain, any ideas???
Also please click on the ads on the bottom as this is how the site will be funded for right now.
