Xperia X1 WIFI problem! - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there, i've been trying to get wifi to work on my x1 all day. really annoying!
I've got a netgear wgr614 as a wireless router. The x1 finds the wireless network. but when i put in the RIGHT wep key, x1 simply goes from available to connecting, and shortly after to available again! neither ie nor opera works.
Then i deliberately tried a WRONG wep key, no popup saying it's a wrong key.
so then i switched off wep, leaving wireless network unprotected. I tried to connect again, futile! goes from available to connecting to available again! I tried options such as Internet, Work, using PEAP option and what not. Simply won't connect to my network! strangely enough, i plugged it to pc with usb cable and it loads webpage, finally. But i really need wifi! Any thoughts? Many thanks in advance! this is driving me crazy. should've got an iphone

Forgot to add, I use the generic UK R3A rom.

anyone will contribute some input? greatly appreaciated!

have you tried to change from wep to wpa and restart the procedure?

When I 1st got my X1 I had the same WiFi connection problems.
A soft reset of both devices (phone & router) mysteriously fixed it. It's been fine ever since.

WiFi DoA on my Tilt/Kaiser?

Hello Everyone,
I'm looking for either a confirmation that my my WLAN is bad, or suggestions on other things I should try before taking it back in for replacement.
Searching and browsing through the forums I didn't see anyone mention any of the problems I'm having so I'm assuming I'm the only one (or one of very few) that bought a Kaiser with a defective Wifi radio.
Here's the symptoms:
I tried connecting to my wireless connection at home maybe a day or two after I bought my Tilt (last Friday). My home connection is draft 802.11n with WPA2-PSK security.
So I enable the WLAN and it detects my Wifi network and it asks for the key. I input it and then it tries to connect, but... it never does. I tried it a few times consecutively and it still didn't work (I get the animating arrows and the 'halo' around the beacon, but then it goes away, and it just keeps doing that). Now, I've seen this before with on my XV6700 with a beta ROM of WM6, but I know well HTC and AT&T wouldn't release something with broken WPA/2 support. At least HTC, I thought...
So I unlocked my Tilt and loaded the factory Kaiser ROM I downloaded from here, and well, WPA2 didn't work on it either. Weird, I thought, so I searched forums and no one mentioned any of this. So I changed my security settings on my network to WPA-PSK (from WPA2) and that made no difference at all... I don't want to bore y'all with everything else I tried, but to sum it up, I then tried a WPA fix I found on PPCGeeks, but that just ended up making my WLAN staying disabled, so I unintalled that and I decided I would try it with a WEP or Open wireless network.
Well, this morning I did just that and even when I try to connect to a wireless connection with WEP, I get the same behavior when I tried this at home with WPA. I've triple checked the WEP key, and I know it's right.
I haven't tried it on an Open network yet, but I'm assuming I'm going to get the same results. I'll have to find a wireless router no one's connected to so that I can try this out, but it might take me a while. Should I even waste anymore time on this? Anyone else here having (or had) the same problem?
I might start loading the AT&T ROM on this soon so I can take it back, but if any of you have any suggestions, I'm all ears.
Wow. Am I the only one on here who's having this problem?? Lucky me, I guess... :S
Anyway, I just tried connecting to a public and open wifi network here in SF, but my Kaiser still wouldn't connect. Guess that confirms it: my WiFi adapter is defective.
Anyone know if I can get it replaced in a different store from where I purchased it, and what I need to take (hope it's just the phone)?

This is what I did. Start->settings->connections tab->WiFI. Now you should see your routers name there with the signal bar next to it. Tap AND Hold the name, then go to settings or edit(I forget), then click NEXT, uncheck the box that says "the key is automatically provided"(thats for open access routers/networks that dont require codes). Then type in your code & make sure you specify what key # it is. click next and youre done. You should be able to connect.
silly question here. is your router broadcasting 802.11b or g? the wifi won't connect to anything else.
You might also check your AP to see if it's not broadcasting its SSID to the world (a common security setting). I couldn't connect until I enabled broadcast on my AP, set the network up, and then went back and disabled SSID broadcast.
Why in the hell this is a problem in the first place is beyond me, but this is the third smartphone/PDA with wireless that I've had to do that for. And every time, once the device found the network once, it never had a problem finding it again.
Believe me. I tried everything in the WiFi settings page. I edited the settings, removed them and added them again, and like I said before I even went and changed my security settings on my router (which to answer your question, zeta, it broadcasts in: n, g, and b. Same router worked with my Apache/XV6700).
Anyway, I stopped by the store where I bought it today and they told me that as far as he can tell, that does qualify for a replacement. The problem is they don't have any in stock to replace it with, and he has no idea when they'll be getting more in. They only received 2 on launch day, and I bought one of those. He did mention that I can get it replaced at any store, however, but they all might be in the same boat.
Guess I'll try another store tomorrow, but if not I guess I'll have to go through AT&T's tech support (don't like the sound of that) and get it replaced through them. So I guess this means I might have a few days to mess around with the phone and even try some risky thangs.
So if any of you developers and hackers, er, I mean tweakers need some1 to test something, I can be that guinea pig (for a while at least)... Just give me a shout.
To troubleshoot your wireless connection always try ruling out as many other factors as possible. So put your router to NO security (temporarily ofcourse) and have it broadcast 802.11g. Also make sure you add the mac address of your device to the list in your router, if it uses mac address filtering. Try connecting to it with a laptop and see if that goes fine. Work systematically...

I have a similar Problem, your solution works partly for me:
As soon as I enable the AP to broadcast it's ID, Kaiser connects.
But as soon as the ID is hidden, it does not connect.
Weird.
Is it a security problem if the ID is broadcasted, provided I use WPA2-PSK/AES?
Thanks
V
No. Hiding the SSID really only protects you from folks that are wandering around without any tools. Open up a more fully featured scanner, and it'll pull the SSID out of the air. The encryption is much, much more important.
And I also wouldn't bother with MAC filtering. Changing the MAC address is usually a software setting, so it's not all that much additional security. WPA/WPA2 are much better solutions.
Yeah, the hidden SSID is not an issue with me, since I don't mind broadcasting it at home. Not too paranoid about it. If someone *really* wanted to sniff and break into my network, they could. Don't do much important and highly confidential stuff at home anyway.
Plus, like Perf mentioned, there's software out there, even for PocketPCs, that will find so-called "hidden" SSIDs. Thanks for your suggestions, anyway.

i had no issue connecting to my wrt54g running DD-WRT v23 SP2 with my SSID hidden with WEP enabled. when setting up a new connection, i just entered the name of the connection and then the WEP hex, and it connected flawlessly. Have fun hacking your phone until you can swap?
Mine is not working either. I exchanged the phone and found out that I was the 3rd person with the same problem.

Glad to hear, I'm not the only one.
I exchanged my phone this morning, and I just tried connecting to my wireless network and guess what??
I'm getting the SAME RESULTS.
Now, before anyone goes and tells me that my router is the problem or that it's user error, then tell me: why does my laptop, PS3 and my Wii connect just fine?? I even changed the SSID and WPA key last night and they all connected w/o a problem as well. All except my freaking Tilt.
Can be it a coincidence that I got 2 bad phones? I don't know if I should call the store and tell them to hold up on sending the other phone to HTC.
Which reminds me, I probably should try calling HTC today, but I doubt they'll be much help...
I don't think you're nuts, and I doubt you got two bad phones. But if you want to double-check, take the phone to your local Starbucks or other shop with WiFi and see if it can detect that AP.
But at this point, I'd be inclined to look for a firmware upgrade for your AP. I could be that it's not supporting long or short preambles right (a problem for some devices in the past), doesn't like seeing more than XXX different devices, or just doesn't like your phone much.
Either way, I'm smelling an issue with your AP. I had a US Robotics AP/Router that drove me nuts because it would spontaneously reboot after a random period any time an IPSec VPN was present.
try setting the power mode on best performance. when i do that i stay connected to wifi.
I took both my old I730 and my tilt to the coffee shop before I returned my first tilt. I was able to connect my I730 at the coffee shop and home, but couldn't connect the tilt at either place. I also tried some open AP's in my neighborhood that I have been able to connect to in the past with the same results. Picky phone or bad wifi radios maybe.
Jesus... like the bloke said:
1) Turn off wpa and see if it will connect (it will unless you have set your N router to only use "n") If it won't then send it back.
2) If it does... then turn on WEP 128bit on your router... and use that instead.
WM devices have always had problems with WPA...
Hi all.
I have tried my HTC TyTN II with one Wifi LinkSys WAG54GS Router using WPA and not hidding the SSID and works fine, no problem at all.
Test with one AP from DLink at the office, using hidden SSID and WEP 64 and 128 Bits and no problem at all, works as fine as my LinkSys.
I'm going to try hidde the SSID at home with WPA and WPA2 and post the results later to know if there is a common issue with Kaiser or some freaky coincidence.
Regards.

I found that I couldn't get my Kaiser to connect to my WPA encrypted LAN - open access and WEP (64 and 128 bit) work fine.
Not sure what the problem is - maybe some incompatibility between the Kaiser and my Netgear router. I've downgraded the security to 128bit WEP for the time being but I'm hoping that there's a fix soon.

Wi-Fi problem

I have a brand new tilt that I got last night and I am unable to connect to my wireless network. When I enable wi-fi in my Wireless Manager, it prompts me to connect to my router or to my PS3. I choose my router, set it to connect to 'Work' (used to do this on WM2003/WM5) and enter my WEP key.
After the WEP key is entered, I see that it is connecting, but then it just goes back to the network being available.
I have tried changing the wireless power to high, deleted the settings and re-entered them. Rebooted the phone with a hard reset, as well as my router, and I am still unable to connect.
Any thoughts?
what about setting it to connect to "The Internet" instead of Work? that's how i have mine and it works flawlessly...
I get the same results. In 'Start' > 'Settings' > 'Connections' > 'Wi-Fi' I see the network I want to connect to. I highlight it and click 'Connect' and it says 'Connecting' for a few moments. Instead of moving to 'Connected' it just goes back to saying 'Available'.
I have tried every combination of 'Work' or 'The Internet' that I can find, and still no luck. I tried connecting to a neighbor's unsecured wireless network and got the same results, so I know it's not the WEP. On a side note, my Dell Axim X50 with WM5 connects to both networks just fine.
this happens to my phone every so often but a soft-reset or cycling the WiFi in the comm manageer usually fixes it...
Unfortunately, that hasn't worked for me. I have done soft resets, hard resets, and still it doesn't want to work. I'm going to try at my office tomorrow when I get there and see if that makes a difference, but I don't have high hopes at the moment.
I've read that some routers might be problematic, so I am wondering if anyone has tried the Linksys WRT100N with their Tilt. If so, was there anything special that was done to get it working?
same exact problem with my wi-fi... except the 1st day i got my tilt, the wi-fi was working flawless while hooked up through usb to my laptop.. now its not working at all. It just tries to connect and nothing happened. I may even have the same exact router lol. Its an old linksys
I think it's the Wireless-N router at home. I am at work on a WAP54G and it's working fine. PIE launches, I can see my network and Pocket Putty hits the servers I need it to. Unfortunately, that means I get to mess with the router at home, but fortunately it means there is nothing wrong with the tilt.

Tilt Wi-Fi Problem after WM6.1 Upgrade (official)

Hi, I've had my Tilt for a while now, and I just updated to the new WM6.1 ROM this morning. However, after the upgrade, I could no longer get the wifi to work. I can connect to the wireless networks (tried different networks both open and secure), but when I try go to a website or use the internet, it just sits there and then says cannot connect. I have tried everything I can think of to fix the problem. I tell it to connect through work and through the internet, and messed with some other setting but that wouldn't do it. I plugged the tilt into activesync and it used the computer's connect just fine. Anyone having or had this issue, or have any suggestions?
Chris
Did you install the remove hidden proxy CAB?
If not, go here and get it:
http://www.4shared.com/dir/6996097/3f1f5d36/cabs.html
It's the removeHiddenProxy4CWS_0522 file
There may be others that do the same thing.
I installed the hidden proxy cab on my tilt, and the wi-fi still isn't working. Any other suggestions on fixing this problem. It's killing me. I though I'd be able to upgrade and reinstall all my files in just over an hour before I ran into this issue.
Update: Okay, I reverted back to the previous WM6 ROM and the wifi worked with absolutely no problem right off the bat. I don't understand what the issue could be and whether anyone else is having the problem. I'm going to try the WM6.1 ROM one more time, and then give up. I have to have wifi because I'm not willing to fork out money for a data plan. Any solutions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
change the power mode for the wireless mode to 'Best Performance'. This worked for me. Start -> Settings -> Connections -> wireless lan -> Power mode -> Best Performance.
Work Around For Wi-Fi Problem
I have found a work around for this and have tested on my "Tilt" which works 100% for the windows mobile 6.1 rom. On your device go to start, settings, connections then click on the connection icon then manage existing connections. Create on new setting on top of Media Net settings which you will have two connections. Name it Cingular GPRS, Enter Cingular GPRS, then Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G) for your modem, click next access point name wap.cingular, click next then User name [email protected], Password encrypted. The only thing you need to do is when using the internet & text messaging to have settings set on bullet mark Cingular GPRS. When using MMS only check check bullet mark for Medit Net and have proxy settings enabled at all times which will not affect your Wi-Fi connection to browser the internet once you switch back to Cingular GPRS in your settings. https://www.wireless.att.com/suppor...tutorialsCategory=MEdia+Net&tutorialId=614410

Hi, I tried you solution several times, but still could not get the problem fixed. I guess I am just resolved to going back to the WM6 ROM. Thanks for the info though.
@abhijitray: I already tried changing the power settings when I first began having problems, so that's not it.
i have the same problem with my Tilt. But i found that when i connect to my PC with the USB cable, ActiveSync is on, my IE works fine. With Wifi connection, IE is still dead.
maybe an off topic question, but what does the new rom have that the original rom that came with the tilt doesn't? anyone have a link or something, or is it something like better batter performance? thx
i have tilt with the latest official WM6.1 ROM, and have no issues with Wifi.
Ok - here's my story.
I had a default WM 6.0 Official ROM Tilt and upgraded to ATT's 6.1. Immediately my WiFi stopped working. I waited for updates on this thread, and with my temper rising at such a poor release, I decided to go to Dutty's 6.1 Hybrid. Same thing - Wi-Fi didn't work. (To qualify, it would connect and get an IP address, but any attempt to access the net - ping, ftp, Gmaps, Activesync - would fail) I upgraded to the latest eMo radio and still didn't work. I scratched my head and decided to check my router. It's an older D-Link 802.11b and sadly the last firmware was released in 2005. I changed the settings on it to not use Turbo mode and voila, it connected. All happy and such.
But now the problem is slightly different. It will connect once, but after it disconnects (either because I manually turned off WiFi on the phone or the phone entered Standby mode) I cannot connect again. I literally have to reboot my router. This is great a home, but I worry when I have to use a public wifi hotspot. Any thoughts on that?
And yes, I have played around with the power settings.
Kojak
another thing I have noticed on my router is that my Tilt is not sending a hostname along with the DHCP request. Could that be the issue on the WiFi connection? I am wondering if that confuses the router.
Tom
I have the same problem too. tytn II with latest rom. At home with my old linksys which is a 802.11b device. If i disconnect wifi and then try to connect - the phone say - Unavailable. I notice that if i change the channel the phone connect just fine.... very strange
ps. sorry for my bad eng.

I see the same here - I think that by changing the channel it reboots/resets the router and allows you to try again.
ps. don't worry about your english. If this board was in a different language, I am sure that most people here would not even be able to post a thing.

Well, your problem sounds exactly the same as mine (WM6.1 official). Maybe I should have tried a public hotspot, but it just wouldn't work on my home network (I even cut off the encryption and made it open). I downgraded back to WM6 ROM and everything working fine, so I guess no WM6.1 for me.
It is definite a router by router problem. Had problems with the D-Link but I tried it on a Buffalo 802.11g router running Tomato firmware, and I had absolutely no problems. That being said, this could be either a:
802.11b problem?
D-Link problem?
Something must have changed in the WM 6.1 code from WM6.0 as it pertains to WiFi. If only it was as easy as a toggle setting to fix.
For me, it was the opposite. I could get WiFi to work at my office on Mobile 6.0, but I couldn't get my network at home to work. I have a Wireless-N network at home, and even though I set it to B-G only mode, it still wouldn't connect. As soon as I hit WM6.1, everything was fine.
Unfortunately, this happens more than one would think with Wireless network equipment.

Kojak_nyc,
You hit it on the head. It is a router issue, although its not limited to the D-Link router because I have a 2wire HomePortal 1000HW and it also doesn't work. It is also on 802.11b, so that could also be the issue. Something must have changed between in the settings the WM6 and the WM6.1 upgrade. I'll go ahead an inform HTC of the issue (not that they'll do anything).
I believe that the once the tilt is updated to WM6.1, it no longer works on IEEE 802.11b.
I think this is a Dlink issue. I've got a linksys router at home and it connects to that fairly quickly. ssid on that isn't hidden cuz i've got vista machines that have a hard time connecting.
anyway, at work i've got a dlink di624, 802.11g, router and i've not been able to connect the kaiser to it. i think tomorrow i'll do what was suggested and just play around with the channels and find which works. the dlink's set to automatically choose the channel it uses so i'll hard code it for a channel i know the kaiser'll scan for and then see what happens.
if it doesn't work i'll juts keep using the 3g connection... i do have 6GB/mo and haven't come anywhere near using it up.
Experienced similar problem just now. I just upgraded to WM 6.1 and my WiFi connection's been unstable since last night. I have a wireless router with excellent signal on my room and enjoys streaming video before I upgraded to WM 6.1. When I reset the phone it restored WiFi connection again.
Hope you could share some tweaks to resolve this problem.
Thanks.

Wireless wont connect

Hello fellow diamond users!
First off I'm not new to XDA's and WM6, I've had two XDAs before and have always browsed these forums for advise, although I've not been an active poster.
But now I'm stumped. I just cannot get my O2 Ignito to connect to any secured wireless network (unsecured is fine!)
I've even just done a hard reset just to be sure.
The phone can see the network, I'm trying to connect to a mixed mode (11b & 11g) wireless WPA/PSK (WPA+WPA2) but the phone simply refuses to connect! I've even double checked the settings on my old Wizard to be sure (which still connects fine!) and reset the key and checked this with an iPhone which connects fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I m not sure it can help u in this case, but give it try...
Go to Wireless LAN >> Power mode,
and change from Best Battery to Best Performance and try,
I had this problem once and I found that some routers don't know to support Power save mode
Tried that already still no joy.
This is really doing my head in now!
I think its router specific, as I've just connected to the wireless connection of the company downstairs...with there permission of course!
is DHCP or mac address filtering enabled?
Hi there!
I've the same problem. I've an "old" TYTN II working fine and a Diamond which doesn't support wpa-psk secured network. No MAC filtering, no DHCP, no nothing! Just doesn't connect. Sometimes it gets connected (after restart or when coming from sleep mode) but then i turn off wi-fi, turn on again, it founds the net but simply doesn't connect.
Does anybody has an idea?
THXS!

xperia wifi problems

i have a linksys WRT54GX4. When I try to connect to it using the xperia, it tries to connect for a few seconds and then the status shows unavailalbe then a couple seconds later the status of the router goes back to available but i can never connect to it. The router is running a DHCP server and the wireless security is WEP 128bit and the authentication is open. I don't know why it doesn't want to connect. I really need to sort this out. Anyone else experience this problem? The phone connects to other routers in my neighborhood though, so it might be the router, but i have other devices connected to the router and they are just fine.
Haven't used that router before but maybe you could try updating the routers firmware to the lastest available.
These should be available from the manufacturers website.
already tried its the latest.th erouter isn't giving me any problems on my othe computers/ laptops. Is it possible that the x1 just isn't compatible with it?
Do you have any other security, i.e. MAC filtering, turned on?
no i never mess with the more advanced settings. BTW I even tried disabling all encryption basically unprotected, and it still gave the same problems! Thanks for the quick replies also.
Hmmmm......
Ok, I know its a pain but try changing your security from WEP to WPA.
Everyone with wireless should really use WPA or above, WEP is quite crackable with various free tools floating around the net.
yea but shouldn't it have connected with NO encryption whatsoever?
Hpoefully a hard reset will fix your problem?
I had the same problem but i thougt it was becuse ny router but i tried to connect to other networks aswell an got the same problem, well later on my phone stopped accepting files thrue the usb cable. and didt want to install some cab files that i had istalled before and knew was working.
I had enough and decided to hard reset it and it really fixed all my problems.
so hopyfully it will for you too..
Good luck.
yea i'm gonna try now, hopefull that will work, did u hard reset thorugh the iption in settings, or did you do it physiclaly through buttons>?
Havent had that problems ... what i do is allow only my devices mac address to connect ...
my psp as well as gf psp
2 desktop + laptop
htc touch cruise
xperia
and home media player
Everything else gets denied, cant really beat mac address filtering.
ok just tried a hard reset and still didn't work. The signal strength is full but the phone never even gives me that automatic message that there is a network available, but it does this for other routers in my neighborhood.

Actually, you can, but that's for another forum
OK PROBLEM SOLVED. Did a factory reset on my router, then the phone connected. But when I went to change the channel from auto to 10, the wifi stopped connecting. After that, any susequent changes to the channel; whether I tried a different channel or set it back to auto, did not work and the only way to get it back was factory reset the router. So basically I have resseted my router, and have not touched the channel settings and it is working fine. BTW the dedicated Xperia tech support line is AWESOME, even though they weren't the ones who figured out why i had the problem (and they wouldn't have because it was the routers problem) they knew what they were talking about and are actually from the US!
n4v1n, did WiFi work for you in other networks (with other routers)?
I have the same problem with my phone: only reset of my house router allows the phone to reconnect.
I am not so convinced that it's a problem of the router, because two of Samsung phones (Omnia HD on Symbian and Wave on Bada) connect always without any problem.
does your router have a physical easy connect button? try to use that before connecting even you already have the proper setup on both devices. sometimes somehow that happend to laptop, phone, wifi card. and with a single push solved most of the quirks.
if i remembered correctly, older wifi support only up to 7-1 devices. and my phone seems never connect to anything higher than channel 6.
