unlocked TMOB device only showing EDGE on AT&T - help - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile ROM Development

hi all, I bought a TOB locked device which worked finme on TMOB, getting 3g and H all the time. i had to move to AT&T so I unlocked the device (thru TMOB) and got the appropriate service at AT&T. But my device only shows EDGE. Card shows 3g in an iphone so it isnt that. Anyone know why im only getting EDGE???

ATT and TMobile use different 3g bands so EDGE is all you will ever get. Same thing happens in reverse until there are phones that support both sets of bands (not likely).

well thats just GREAT!!
thanks. have to port to t-mob again!

To expand on what you said, they use different 3G bands AND the hardware that is able to talk to said bands is exclusive to both AT&T and T-Mobile TP2 phones. There is a physical hardware difference between the two, so upgrading to a different radio will not allow you use your T-Mobile TP2 on AT&T's 3G network, either.

In other words, do a bit more research on these phones before you jump ship on carriers!

Aye. It's like with my wife. She has a G1 right now with T-Mobile. However, her friend has a MeToo (iPhone) with AT&T. Of course, she wants the iPhone now and told me that other day that she can get one that is already unlocked for use with other carriers. I had to explain to her that I would get her the iPhone if she wanted, but that she would NOT get 3G while on T-Mobile's network given the hardware constraints. She didn't say much after that.
Research is key. I see it every day in the NRG ROM thread. People see "Manila 2.5" and immediately grab that version. However, they fail to research and don't realize that Manila 2.5 is still in its beta form from HTC. They ask why certain functions don't work...they even seem surprised when they don't work. When explained to them that it is still in beta form, they quickly go back to lurking.

Yup I do agree some research is always good! But TP2 is worth it without 3G... I dont loose much by loosing 3G compatibility.

ditto on that, where I live we don't get stable 3g and when we do I don't notice any speed advantages. When I drive to atlanta where they have a stable 3G I only noticed that google maps DIDN"T like to even connect at 3G. And I wasn't really using anything else while there, I actually disabled the stupid 3G radio on my pantech just so I could use google maps. Sooo... never really had it anyway and got tired of waiting for ATT to drop their TP2 or even the TD2. bought a TM TP2 and I've been in heaven ever since. Phooey 3G... who needs ya? I got WiFi and edge is fine for whatever else I need on the road.

Yea 3G will be nice, but not a necessity! LOL

thanks to all of you for making me feel so good. its no issue to return to tmob just time!!

i've been with tmobile forever and this is my first taste of 3g, and i gotta say, i was much more excited about it than actually having it. i get 3g in my area and it makes nearly no difference in what i do with opera mini.
espn will load a hair faster and i finally get a good slingbox stream, but other than that, i wouldn't die if i had to go back to edge

You will see a MUCH bigger difference when you aren't using a browser that compresses the data before it gets to your phone.
Opera mini does just that. Thus, you won't see much of a difference between Edge and 3G. Skyfire also does it as well, I believe.
When you start downloading "raw" data, though, you will really see the difference in speed.

Using Diamond in the US

Hello,
I have been really interested in buying this phone for quite a while now. But with it being Triband and not supporting any 3G in the US (which I only really use for internet sharing), I am still wondering if I should spend the money and get this phone or another one. My main question is, even without 3G support, I should still be able to get Voice and EDGE coverage correct? I currently have a Cavalier (S630) which I can use for Internet Sharing only if need be. I still cant see why its not Quadband =( and oh yes, I am on AT&T.
Any help on this topic would be great. Thanks =)
Man why waste 600+ dollars for half a phone. you have waited this long just wait for the us version. Trust me. You have no idea how slow edge is. I used to live in 3G/HSPDA terriroty and now i dont. I havent used my kaiser for web surfing in a while becasue its painfully slow. Save the dough

I know how slow EDGE is, it sucks lol. The thing is I know how HTC likes to delay their phones all the time, and I really haven't seen a solid release for the US. I have seen Q2, but since they delay their phones so much you can never tell.
Edge won't work in part's of America either. The Diamond that is out currently is tri-band GSM and doesn't have the 850 mhz which is what at least part of America works on. It's possible, depending on where you live, that even the edge won't work for you.
You really need to wait for the American version to come out.
See this link for the bands.

The specs on this site state that is has 850mhz band which is not correct. According to the detailed specs thread on the Diamond fourm it says the phone has a GSM band 1900. I went to www.gsmworld.com to look at the network for AT&T (1900mhz band only) and it covers the major cities and surrounding areas (almost exact same coverage map as 850mhz band) unless your in the friggin mountains.

Edge, but no 3G in Tennessee At&t

Hello all-
I just got in my Diamond today and after working on it about an hour, I still can only get Edge (and very small reception and SSLLOOWW data). I currently have a tilt with a flashed ROM running 6.1 and got perfect 3G reception from it here at my desk. I use At&t here. Could the lack of the 850 band be my issue. Please give me some clues or point me to a tutorial to get everything set up to par for my Diamond. I've already searched this whole forum.
Thanks a lot!
Oh dear here we go again....if you had done a search you would have saved yourself so much hassle.
The Diamond you have wont support 3G on AT&T because its missing a £G attenna...even though your settings will show that it can support the band for AT&T 3G but in reality you CANNOT get 3G access with the Diamonds that are out at the moment.
Only way your going to be able to get 3G in America is by waiting for the proper American version of the phone...as to when its out...could be july/August.
Well...Thats the bad part of me that gets way too excited. I'm going to try to return it. I'm sure my fiance that im marrying in 3 weeks will love to hear the news of my lack of research. Thanks!
LOL its ok...its just been explained a few times on here that the Diamonds that are on the market arent really suitable for the American 3G market...your just gonna have to wait a bit for the American version.
For what i's worth - thanks for your time with a stupid question.

Apologies if i was a bit abrupt in my first post...been a long day
no 3g
for what it is worth, i have the same issue with no 3g but i have edge and so far find it fine for what i need it for. For others, the added speed that you get may be worth it. I love my Diamond otherwise, despite the battery. I will however get the usa version when it comes out, mainly for reception purposes since i feel the lack of 850 band lessens the reception a little... But so far I love it. Btw i have the ME rom which is fast and smooth and have no issues so far other than i cant hide the SIM contacts even with the tweak.

I no longer have AT&T 3G network coverage ..

I have a Rogers G1 that I use with AT&T's service. When I first received the phone (yesterday), AT&T's 3G service was working fine and it even had an option to enable|disable the 3G signal in the settings. However, after I decided to flash the SPL, radio, etc. (after everything, I've decided to stick with Cyanogen 4.2.14.1), my 3G signal no longer works, as I only have EDGE coverage AND there is no setting in the phone that even mentions HSDPA or 3G enabling. I know it's not the ROM that did this, since I was using the Expresso, MLIGN's 3.3 and another ROM. So basically.. How do I get my 3G signal back??? Thanks in advance!

Not sure how to help you. Wrong forum by the way. I used my Rogers Dream for AT&T 3G but I have noticed several things about it.
1. The build quality seems much lower than my ADP1. I put my ADP1 that I got in Dec. '08 thru hell and it is battered but not a single thing is wrong with it function wise. My Rogers Dream I had for 4 months and it already bit the dust. I took care of it like a baby, yet the bluetooth has failed, as has the microsd slot. I took it apart and swapped the sd board into my ADP1 and it worked fine, yet it fails in my Rogers one still yet. Damn you Rogers.
2. It always seems to show a low signal strength (~-100 dBm where my ADP1 gets ~-80 on EDGE and my Samsung flip-phone gets ~-75 on 3G all in one area)
I would recommend you try a reflash.

I wasn't trying to be hateful or snarky. I was just stating that it was, unlike some people who just post "wrong forum jackass" & crap like that I actually tried to contribute something
And by reflash, I mean to try to reinstall another ROM. It could just be a temporary problem that reinstalling Cyanogen's ROM or any other ROM may fix.

Oh.. I know you weren't being "hateful or snarky". I was just saying what everyone else has told me. I hope I didn't come off as "hateful or snarky" either.
If that's what re-flashing is then I've done that plenty of times. Most of the time, I would wipe everything (except the last two settings - Battery & Rotation). I've flashed MLIGN's v3.3, Espresso ROM, some other random v2.3 ROM by the same creator as the Espresso and now, CM's latest (which is what I'm at now - Most stable and it's the most smoothest ROM I've used so far).
its a network issue i doubt anyone here could help at all
Heres your problem..
A g1 WILL NEVER fuction on ATT 3g. They use different bands that the G1 does not use. No matter what you think you may have had, you NEVER had att 3g coverage with a G1. It is an ATT problem, not a rom, radio or whatever problem. Once you unlock a G1 for ATT you say by by to 3g.
Dont belive me, use google and do a tiny ity bity search.

Actually it's not that bad lol. I live in the boonies about 60 mi. south of St. Louis & I have excellent 3G. I average about 120KB/s and on a good day I can cruise at 210KB/s. Not excellent, but when at my house my only other option is Hughesnet or Dial-up it's pretty dang good. Vzw has no service here & T-Mo barely has EDGE. Sprint is the only other 3G network here and I get about 60KB/s average on my EvDo card.

I REALLY hate when people try and give me info that they know NOTHING about. How are YOU going to tell ME if I had AT&T 3G or not? Don't you think I'd realize that!? Why else would I import a Rogers G1!? AT&T's 3G has a much wider spectrum than T-Mobile's, by the way.

This should be order for US: Fastest - Slowest
-Verizon
-Sprint
-Tmobile
-A&TT
The top mobile carriers so I excluded any other ones.
I always got slow 3G on my old att phone but tmobile's is faster with great coverage for me and unfortunately bad for you.Not sure what desert wasteland your at that you cant get 3G(jk)...If you dial *#*#4636#*#* then select WCDMA only it should give you only 3G. Not sure if the feature is compat with Att too.

3g issues?

I have a g1 but its not working right so im in search of a new phone.
I am thinking between staying with tmobile for a nexus one or going to verizon for the incredible?
does the nexus one still have 3g issues?
i see some people saying they have 3g issues but is that due to some roms or is the hardware still having problems?
i havent been able to use my Nexus on 3g since I bought it. If I had it to do over, I would have fought harder to return it (made the mistake of getting it engraved) and get one that works. I have a friend with the same issue. Both of us have EXCELLENT 3g on our G1's. The 3g issue is real...no matter what they tell you.

I'd almost be with you on that, but the phone is somewhat hideous (especially the back design).
The N1 does have 3G issues though - and it's quite unfortunate that Google has apparently stopped investigating it.
However, it is dependent on the network you are using as to whether its going to be a real problem for you. For example, I don't think there as many European users complaining - GSM reception tends to be a lot stronger there...
yea the phones back is ugly but the phone itself looks nice.
and i dont think gsm will be a problem my family has verizon they get reception every where its just more expensive

Yes, definitely, Verizon is easily the best in the US, as long as you're willing to pay the price (and for some time, settle for sub-standard smartphones, but they've improved with that).

[Q] Moto X GSM Unlocked T-Mobile works outside the US?

Hi!
I'm planning to buy a customized Moto X unlocked GSM edition but I'm wondering if it'll work outside the US.
At Moto they don't know as "they haven't tried it". And is confusing as it says on their website that is GSM unlocked but comes with a t-mobile sim card, so it's unlocked to work with t-mobile and at&t only or also open to other compatible GSM networks around the world? Has anyone had the chance to try it?

Most phones shipped these days support most 2g/3g bands to support international roaming features. Say you're going to Europe, i wouldn't count on you getting anywhere near LTE speeds or even 4g speeds because there networks aren't that developed yet, put in simple terms, but there's a good chance that you can still get a supported 2g/3g connection, does that make sense? I would take it with me if i were you, no harm in that right?

I got my T-mobile Moto X shipped to Belgium, it works on the local GSM networks.

I heard of it What you can do is find out what network bands your cellphone company back in Romania uses and see if your phone supports it. There's a good chance your phone will support one of their bands though

They support it for 2G/3G, but not above. The bands are different for LTE.

3G is fast enough. As the 4G network is not fully developed (no full country coverage), and the prices are still high, I don't think it's really worth stressing too much about it. I ordered myself a MotoX from the states with a non-compatible LTE hardware just now. I know that I won't use that technology in a comfortable way anyways for the next 2 years. For my personal needs, 3G+ is more than enough.

Ya don't worry about it too much because it sounds like you're a casual user, mainly for emails and such I'm guessing? But anyways Lte speeds are really going to take off in the next couple years so you'll be in for a treat when you get back Happy Journey!

Well I could say casual user, I guess, but I use mostly wifi wherever I spend more time. Home, work, friends place, all have good wifi, so when I'm out, I switch to 3G, and in that time I don't really need super fast speeds.
Thanks.

Makes sense and the harm is like $430 haha and then the time n money to unlock it. But now anymore by knowing that some people had try it outside the US .
My worry was about if it's really unlocked as I'm buying it to use it in Ecuador most of the time. And when u buy it, it says that they give u a t-mobile sim card so that's confusing.
Bought it yesterday

Works outside the us!
If you want it...buy it because it works!! The NO CONTRACT MOTO X is fully unlocked!!
Comes with a t-mobile nano card but that's no problem...I guess if that I need it at the US someday, I will have to activate it.
