hey i got a g1 and um im going to try to follow a rot video which lets me know to put in a flashrec.apk and a recovery image...so back up then apply imgage??? but one question....do i need to jailbreak my phone before i do the root process????

no such thing as jailbreaking an android device. Thats for Apple only thing, Android doesnt limit you from doing what the device was made to do, only need to root to gain extra functionality.
I agree though, you sounds ill-informed of the risks and consequences of rooting your phone. Do some research, consider how you would feel w/ your G1 being as useful as a 'brick', and make an informed decision.....

okay this is what ive done...i use the flash rec apk and then backup and applied the ra recovery img. now i can go to the recovery mode...can i apply any rom not knowing the spl?...also one last question.... if i need to unroot do i do this by appliying the dreamin.img by pressing the end and camera then apply and this should unroot it right????

youve seenthe complicated way of jailing breaking an iphone i presume. heres how complicated it is in android
open settings > applications > uncheck allow non-market apps > press yes

but really dude, learn to search and read some of the guides, all your questions have been answered 100 times over. you are not special and will not be getting any special help from anyone here on such a stupid question.
you should goto the tmobile store though and let them finish the rooting for you, they are professionals and will do a really good job, some of them are nice and won't charge you the $13.79 fee either.

Actually I put up the ol hijacked picture saying we was bout to hijack it but it must have been taken down by someone. That was the first thing I thought of when I got to work this morning. I guess just me and fingerlickin are actually doing some work on a monday.

dont expect some one to hold your hand read learn java and Linux and really just play with the os. try to set up singeing by that's a good place to start also but linux on your pc and learn some stuff about terminal. once you do that and have a understanding of what all that development entails you can contact some devs on twitter or pm once you get stuck.
i just want to add i am by no means a master just trying help you out.

judging by your previous posts.... you should learn to use android as a user itself before you start modding everything.... not to be a downer, but "masters" want their apprentices to have SOME knowledge of phone. You will learn a lot more if you explore android yourself over the next few weeks. once you think you have experience, contact some of the devs here and see if they are willing to help. ive found that most of them are really irritated by noobs asking questions that have simple answers.
they seem to forget they were noobs too
(im guilty of this myself)
as for finding a dev here....the only dev ive seen around here in the last few weeks is jubeh (at least i think hes the only one lol)

As long as your major's school is classified something like Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, then chances are you'll be developing

You just need to think of something that needs doing and do it
you don't even need to know java or anything to be a 'developer'.
I'd class myself as a 'developer' (albeit, not a great one) and all i do is edit some .csv files every now and again with notepad
If you want to go deep into the real developing, such as ROM cooking etc., then it's gonna take a lot of hard work!
Java's not too bad once you get your head round it, give it a fortnight and you'll be able to do all the basic stuff.

Thought i would start this thread for ppl like me who havent got a clue how to instal 4.1.99 after getting confused on other threads, this worked for me straight away and i hope it does for you to, if you get any problems please feel free to pm me and i will try to help as best as i can
first of all download the recovery image to the pc from here
http://developer.htc.com/adp.html#s3
once downloaded place the zip file in your sd card and rename it update
power off phone
hold home and power button untill you get to recovery image
click on install sd update
once done
reboot
now download 4.1.9999 from here
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/downloads/rom
once done open your sd card and delete the previouse file called update and place the 4.1.9999 zip file on to the sd card and rename it update
power off phone
hold home and power button until you reach the recovery page
click on instal sd update
voila you should now be on 4.1.9999
