Android help request..:) - Hero, G2 Touch Themes and Apps

Hi everyone.
Just migrated over to andriod from the windows mobile forums, and I have a new white simfree hero with the new firmware 2.73.405.5.146733 just flashed.
1-Is it possible to instal my apps to the sd card, instead of the default phone memory? (what app, and how to for a android novice, I guess I am not rooted?)
2-Is there anyway to use the barcode scanner without logging in google services to download stuff?
Thanks in advance, I just wish I had migrated from windows mobile ages ago, as the hero and android operating system rocks...

it is possible, called a2sd or apps2sd, and is default in some custom roms, e.g. modaco. check out the dev section of the forum.

do you need to install it or use? afaik it is independent from google when using, it just uses the google websearch for found products.

well, ages ago there was no android and the htc hero is the first device that really rocks, not only IMHO. so you're right on time, we just got the kernel sources, so the hacking has begun

Thanks for your time kendong2...
I have tried the APP2CD application cheers, but I can't get it to work?, i.e. I open the program and it says the SD card is not formatted correctly, and gives you a slide bar for the fat32 and ext2 partion size, I move the bar click apply then it goes to a screen that gives you a reboot buttton, but when i press the button nothing happen? (I tried to manaully shut down and restart my hero, but no change made?) I don't know wheather flashing the new rom has changed anything in android http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559613
The barcode scanner issue is when i use it to scan a barcode of my pc monitor, it asks me to log into googlemail, or won't let you use it? i will try to use the barcode scanner from within the hero (navigate through hero's browser to download page) and see if it asks the same from googlemail?
Thanks again for your help.

i think you need a rooted device for apps2sd. have you considered installing modacos custom rom? apps2sd works automatically there...
as for partitioning: there are tutorials on how to partition the sdcard manually, i would suggest you to install amon-ras recovery image, as it brings the feature of automatically partitioning your sdcard.

Just a little addition to this -i'm pretty sure that Apps2sd only works on the Modaco rom - i couldnt get it to work on the stock rom. The second i updated to Modaco it worked a treat.

Modaco Custom Rom 1.1 Core- app2SD help!

Hi i have a sprint htc hero that i have rooted successfully with the Modaco Custom ROM 1.1 Core but now i need help finding a apps2sd download that will work w/ this ROM and is for my phone..... I've read a few posts on people that have somewhat done this already but i honestly don't understand what they are talking about when they refer to the terminal? how do you even reach that on this phone? I have a 2GB memory card w/ like 978MB open all i need is the download and how to install it in simple terms i learned a little with the linux OS but wasnt the best with cmds! does it matter what OS your comp has? ive got Umbuntu 9.1 and Windows XP. Can anyone plz help me i dont want to have risked rooting my phone for nothing! and Thanks in advance!
You have to partition your sdcard then apps2sd is automatic when phone is loading
ok great wat do you suggest with the amount of memory i have left i should partition it? do i need to back up my memory first wipe it then partition it and add it all back? thanks again!
I have my ext2 partition set to 500mb and its always best to back everything up to be safe
ok sorry i must be stupid! Im in my recovery n i hit the option to part sd fat32+ext2+swap but it never gave me option to set anything... wat am i doin wrong?
That's ok it sets it all up for you I'm thinking it sets it to a 500mb ext partition
ok ok so basically when i reboot next time i download an app from the market itll automatically save to my SD? cuz i dont see that option either im not sure it worked! thanks again for all your help.
Yup that's the way it works
you can check to see if apps2sd is working by setting it up, download an app, and then get into adb and cd to system/sd/data and then ls and you should see the app listed in that spot
Ok I'm not exactly sure what adb is...... but I've downloaded an app looked in my astro file manager went to system/sd/ then I couldn't go any further is that an app for my phone or my computer.
Adb is for your computer. It allows you too manipulate the phone from a command prompt (like Linux terminal).

1.) no idea...try linda file manager.
2.) you partition it with the recovery image. swap/ext/fat32
3.) yes
4.) define normal?
Normal by the 2.1 vanilla lockscreen (I Sware I hate the HTC lock, lol)
and could you post a few instructions for apps2sd because i'm still not sure,

to remove the htc lock screen just pull the lockscreen.apk via adb or using the new fresh kitchen.... or you could install fresh's new 2.1 rom. apps2sd should set up automatically as long as the rom you pick has it integrated. you have to make sure your sd card is partitioned before flashing the rom.

I can concur with this ^
If you want a good 2.1 rom then go with damage or fresh. If you want a 1.5 id go with pancake without sense, super fast!

Help: Firefox for android stuck in memory

Tried firefox for android beta2 today and it freezed my phone, so I uninstall it only to realise that it locked 13MB of my internal memory permanently probably due to bad uninstall. Tried to reinstall it so that I can uninstall it again but it didn't allow me to install again saying that I don't have enough memory (though i still have ~45 MB free internal memory).
Anyone knows where does firefox install to? I couldn't find it in any of the app directory (not in data\app or system\app, nothing in dalvik cache and data\data as well). having 14MB memory locked is really a paint considering how small our milestone memory is.
Please help.
Thanks

1.Do you have a recent nandroid backup? that would be a simple fix?
2. What rom and kernel are you using?
3. Is your phone rooted? Probably yes...All the apps go to /system/app, unless you have apps2sd installed
4. If it's not there and it's not in "manage applications" then probably it's a an error of your rom showing erroneous available space.
Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
1) I am using XT720, we don't have nandroid backup tools yet
2) Stock EU rom and kernel for XT720
3) yes, rooted. I am sure it's not in /system/app (mine has got apps2sd)
4) I guess I'll probably need to reflash the rom to get rid of it then. a bit troublesome but no choice I guess.
Something about the firefox is that if you install it you'll find that the space taken up by the firefox is much bigger than the .apk+dalvik cache+data in the normal app installation path. some portion gets installed into somewhere else which nobody knows where. My friend with a Nexus one try to move it to sd but it simply won't move the whole thing because part of it does not install to the /app.
Anyway, thanks for the help. I'll wait another day or two before I flash it to stock again.
Many thanks

Can you go into recovery? ADB commands actually work as root there.
You also said you have app2sd - I'm guessing the ext version. You can browse around the ext partition if you have something that can read it (like Ubuntu) and delete it from the card as well.
- Look into your /cache partition and delete every download*.apk
- Look into /data/app and look if there is still an apk left
- Look into /data/data and see if a Firefox-folder is located there - delete it!
You can do all this with RootExplorer
Then you should be fixed
Milestone isn't supported. I think I read it somewhere on the mozilla site. There's some known issue logged somewhere
Sent from my Milestone using XDA App
Check if there is any "*.tmp" files under /data/app ?
I was locked some memory due to unsuccessful install of "Pocket Legends", and found out that the apks were stored in both "/cache/downloadfile.apk" and "/data/app/vmxyzxyz.tmp".

[Q] Just rooted my Nc, have a few questions.

as a new Android user (the Nc is my first android device), im still a bit of a no0b. I just recently rooted using auto-nooter 1.0.1
a few questions, i have though.
before i rooted, my Nc updated itself to 1.1 , i then had to downgrade using stuff i found here. is there anyway i can keep it from updating itself other than turning wifi on/off?
and now that im rooted, this is the one thing that bothered me on stock. but, is there a way i can put other stuff other than B&N stuff on my homescreen? such as books i loaded myself and/or apps i downloaded from the market?
thanks for any help.
also, i use to add books via calibre, now when i add books it sends them to "my files" rather than adds them to the books list, and they dont end up showing on the "keep reading" button.
any ideas?
Congratz! Hope you like your rooted NC.
The first thing you can do is get a replacement laucher. that's the "interface" you interact with.. I recommend you try Zeam. It works very well and it's free. But you could try others such as LauncherPro, GoLauncer, etc.. Be sure to get Home Switcher first. You should be able to get all those from Market. Zeam will allow you to put shortcuts, widgets, and other stuff except folders.. You can also get a clock & weather widget such as Beatiful Widgets to make your homescreen nice and pretty. I also like to remap the Vol keys to back and menu, instead of using Softkeys, but that's up to you..
To prevent your NC from receiving OTA updates, you can look at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932506
But I recommend you get Rom Manager then install Clockwork Mod and then update to 1.1 via this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932145
Be sure to understand everything you are going to do first, but also rest easy in knowing that it's almost impossible to brick your NC, so worst outcome is that you might lose everything and have to start all over. Once you get Clockwork Mod installed, you can make a "nandroid" backup. It's highly recommended you do that before anything else..
As for the books.. sorry.. I don't use my nook to read books so I'm not familiar with calibre...
Well, enjoy!

cool thanks. i curently only have a small 2gb card. my Wintec 16Gb i bought is giving me problems and wont format. so i guess ill have to wait to do the rom thing.
2GB SD card is enough.. You only need 200MB free to store the NookColor_v1.1.0_r2.zip
Did you use your 16GB with the autonooter? You can regain full use by doing the following:
http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Format_and_partition_your_SD_card_back_to_a_usable_state
Or use a free partition manager such as EASUS, http://www.partition-tool.com/ to resize and reformat the partions..
oops, so i deleted my youtube app. anyway to get it back? like i said im an android no0b, and since it was crashing i figured i could just re-install it from the market. but i deleted it first.

This might be a stupid question but..
Can I download the ZiP of the file that is listed on your linked thread to an SD card from my computer, then install it somehow? I am in afghanistan right now, and I am having wifi issues...

Yes, that's probably the fastest way to do it. Just download the .zip file from a computer into your Nookcolor's micro SD card then boot into Clockwork Mod, either from ROM Manager or by pressing power + n, for 3 seconds after you see the boot up text..
The important thing here is to have ROM Manager and Clockwork mod installed 1st. Then make a backup then install.. select pick .zip from SD card, find the .zip file then flash..
Good luck!

Try if you can format it with the partition tool...
if not, you might have a damaged card..

android cannot work, double virbrate then freeze

Hi guys,
I got stuck on this situation for many days. I also saw some people also had the same problem. But seem that still no solution.
I downloaded the lastest XDAndroid (FRX06 25/03/2011), do exactly like tutorial, copy startup.txt to root, then run haret.exe. But there's a board of Booting Linux appeared, it finished in some seconds, then double vibrate and mobile freeze (without any code line or something like that).
Please need help asap.
Thanks!
