Cant get past dum activation screen after flashing dreaimg.nbh and cupcake - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i dont have a data plan now so i cant activate the phone and i cant use adb cause its not working on win7 for me..is there anyway i can just flash spl and radio and skip the recovery image? I tried someones sim but it just says error when i try to register.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.. or Confirm this is correct. but..
If you're on an official rom you're out of luck, but if you can update to an ADP rom no login will be required. It's not a SPL or radio issue, purely rom based.

What phone are you using on what network? Was the other person's sim card on the same network? did they have an android data plan?
ADP means Android Developer Phone.

Oh both sims were tmobile US, and the other phone was a moto zn5 so it wasnt a g1 plan.

So I'm *assuming* you're on a G1. You basically have three choices, either goto a t-mobile store and beg one of their techs to let ya use their data to register, find someone else with a g1+data and ask to use their sim card or go adp.
The downside of going with an adp rom is you'll loose the t-mobile branded stuff like tmo ringtones, the myfaves app, ?youtube? (not sure on this one, you should do some reading first or hope someone else chips in).
If you really need your phone now, and are able to install custom roms the adp version of donut can be found --here-- Note: I run the official roms so am not too well versed in ADP vs. AOSP+ADP but it looks like you may actually want the latter(AOSP+ADP)

No, no renaming the recovery image.
Ok, so let me get this straight. You unrooted a rooted phone, to install the official cupcake so you could "one touch" root it which installs a custom recovery image @ the same time?
this is starting to hurt my head...

Gotcha, headaches gone but unfortunately it looks like your stuck. It appears this process *assumes* you have a data connection(for the login process) and without this most guides out there are going to be useless, especially at this point.
I'd say add data for a month or w/e then remove it if you must once done doing what you're doin... or go back to looking for someone with data that can help ya get logged in. Bout the only ways out I can forsee atm.. Wish I could be more help...

I was gonna get flex-pay at Tmo since i hate being tied down to contracts and it can have a g1 data plan added.

alright, cool. Ya, i just got it from someone else wiser than I that without data you've got a long road ahead of ya getting your phone back up n running.

You can always do it the old-fashioned way... Just downgrade to RC29, login with WiFi. Then do the root process that way. Only takes 15min at most.

There's a way to bypass it with rooted ROMs, of which RC29 is one. You can. There's a whole guide on how to do it.

Questions
1.can I update to cupcake without having to setup my phone?(i dont have data plan)
2.Whenever I try to download something on the market, it just says 'starting download' and never starts
3.Can I develop apps with the current android sdk that will work on firmware 1.1 AND 1.5?
I do not have a data plan, and I had to go to a T-Mobile store and fight with the people there until they finally let me use a SIM card to set it up...and I do NOT want to go through that again
also, I'm a C++ programmer with 3 years experience, but no experience at all in Java...so will it be hard, or easy to start developing apps for android?
PLEASE help me with this, even if you can only answer one of the questions it will be GREATLY appreciated since this phone is more complicated than a rubiks cube!

Yes, you can update it and it won't ask for a re-avtivation, dun worry buddy !
The market stuff is crazy sometimes ! Just reboot the phone, and everything will be ok ( make sure your wifi connection is strong enough )
Since I am only a highschool's senior, I can't answer the last question ! Sorry
When you start a project using eclipse with the SDK installed correctly it will ask you 1.1, 1.5, or API.
Search the forums about activating without a dataplan there are instructions on how to do it.
You need the current sdk for cupcake, there is also a ndk for making native c apps too now, so hope you make something good
thanks for the replies.

Since you are on a modded rom, you cannot receive updates, pick out a new rom and go into recovery and flash it, since I am going to assume you are on an old recovery, you are gonna have to rename it to update.zip and put it on the root of your sd

You can manually install the update using the threads here, or at t-mobile.com/forums ( go the development section ). The update feature of the phone sucks badly, don't trust it
btw, u make me feel old (
I found on google that if you place update.zip on your phone and boot by pressing home+power, you can update it like that, but will that make me have to setup my phone again? I dont have a data plan, so i'll just stay with 1.1 if I have to
I haven't really started with android development yet, but I've given it a look over. I'm coming from c#.net and most of the syntax is the same, as they are both have roots in C you shouldn't have a problem there. So it's mostly just learning the platform and it's library. .net is managed though like android.
Eclipse isn't really in the same league as Visual Studio though.

if you flash a rom that is based on the adp phone (cyanogen's comes to mind)
you can skip singing into your google account until you have wifi set up.

99% sure about this, I've been flashing ROMs, Radio and stuffs regarding my G1 for a while. At first it was kinda scared indeed, but as long as you get through the first time, the left is as easy as eating an apple pie . Ask me and I will answer if I can
all you do is
put the update.zip on the root of your sdcard (i.e. no folders)
power down your phone and boot into recovery with home and power
(optional but may be required if your phone doesn't boot all the way up.)
wipe your phone.
flash the rom
reboot and wait for phone to boot up
choose to skip signing into google
set up your wifi
open the market and you can sign into google on wifi and be able to download apps.
OMG IT WORKED! thanks to all of you
hopefully it wont crash in the future!

Looking for a little clarification on rooting

I am fairly new to rooting, but thanks to this great website and all your inputs I have learned so much over the past month.
I first rooted my G1 using the 1-click method which was great, but now my earpiece has blown I will be receiving a new handset next week. So I learned how to properly downgrade and install stock firmware for my old handset.
When I receive my new handset, I decided to take the plunge and root the traditional way for 2 reasons.. 1- to learn a different way and 2- its possible the security hole may be patched by then rendering the 1-click useless.
Anyway, after reading all the varying posts on how to downgrade/root/flash custom rom I am still left with a little confusion so hopefully someone can clear this up for me.
When actually rooting, I have seen methods to type various things in the telnet window, and another method to just rerun the .apk and select "protect root". What is the difference between these two methods? Do they both accomplish the same task of making a permanent root? One method actually said to download the JFreke rom to fix permissions to root, bo no other method mentioned that. Is that even necessary?
Also, I know that with Cyanogen Roms I do not really need to flash to "hard spl" if I decide to stay with cm roms, and cm recovery also allows the use of nandroid backup as well. The only other argument I have seen is that a hard spl would potentially allow someone to "unbrick" a bricked phone, but from everything I have read, most people have bricked trying to flash the hard spl.
If I am going to stay with cm roms, is there any real benefit to a hard spl other than increasing the brick chance? If I do upgrade the spl, am I correct that it would be done last, after a potential radio update (assuming my replacement handset does not come with the latest radio)?
Sorry for all the questions, and thanks in advance for your help.
This is the best guide I found.
I have done 4 phones using this method with only 2 minor differences.
1) I format the sd card using a microsd card reader instead of the phone.
2) when it says What To Do Now That You Have Root don't download any of the builds listed there, just download the latest cyan stable rom.
This is the guide hehe forgot to link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
Oh and don't worry about swap or apps2sd partitions until after you root and verify that the rom is working with no problems, this will limit the number of variables in case you have troubles.
Thanks for the input.
So do you install hard spl according to that guide or do you skip that and just install the cm rom?
I love the auto apps2sd of cm roms. My phone is currently back on stock cupcake and I miss having all my apps on my 500mb ext 3 partition!
yea you need HardSPL. and use the recovery linked in the guide. Install cyan's recovery later.
This to me is the easiest step by step visual rooting process have done 3 G1 with full success. The newest G1 I had would not let me do the 1 click rooting method.

Yeah I figured the new handset would most likely be patched. What was the result when you tried the 1-click. Would the new phone just not let you install the 1-click apk?
One thing I might add is you can't brick your phone by flashing Hardspl. It's the "danger" spl that has the potential of bricking your phone. Just follow the traditional guide that fingerlickin provided and your good to go.
Thanks for the help!
Anytime.......
Nope sure wouldn't just kept telling me install aborted. I don't no why. It could be some kind of patch. But I went to old faithfull step by step you tube install. Its really a nice video. You can pause the video and root your phone right along with guy doing the video. he also gives you links on the side bar to all files needed in the rooting process.
oh I'm sorry, I actually have one more question.
After flashing the HardSPl, would there ever be a reason to revert back to the original g1 spl? For instance if I had to send a phone back to t-mo, would they know that I am using the hardspl if all I did was reload the dreaimg.rbh rc-29 downgrade, or does that also reflash the spl back to the original?
Yes you would want to unroot phone before sending it to Tmobile, they do not warrenty a rooted phone

You shouldn't ever have to go back. T-mo would prolly never check it. Many people have sent there phones in with root access and different things installed. But if you do get paranoid and ever have to do it, just flash RC29 and it will put everything back to stock.

I work in an electronics repair company and I agree with supremeteam256 about sending your phone in rooted. Our techs don't check for tampering, they just plug it in and use the programs my department writes to test and reflash the devices. Of course our devices are much more complicated but the same NON-Communication between customer service and technicians still exist.
I think the biggest reason for this is because the techs just aren't interested in explaining the technical details to a customer service rep because all they ever get is "huh? wtf is a bootloader?"
Disclaimer:
I'm not claiming that HTC or TMobile will not check or notice that you have rooted your phone. Just illustrating that the repair techs don't want to talk to customer service anymore than you do and would rather just fix the phone and move on to the next one.

if you can't boot into recovery (home and power) or bootloader (camera and power) then your phone is bricked. you can either call your provider or htc and say something about an update, and see if you can get a replacement phone.

make sure you sound as dumb as possible, like you don't know anything about xda, rooting, flashing, brick, or anything technical. just say something about an update, then afterward it started back up, that it wouldn't boot.

but seriously though, you should try a little harder before resorting to re-rooting. You know that it may not always be possible to fall back to RC29 if HTC decides to change the keys, right? You should learn how to troubleshoot so you wont have to resort to that

Rooted phones would do more harm than good to the average user...
As for your situation, does holding the Camera or Home key not boot you into SPL or recovery, respectively?
It's likely than when you went back to RC29 to reroot, your radio is reverted back along with it, and then you flashed the dangerSPL to brick your phone.

flashing the DangerSPL then the RC29 image should have any detrimental affect on the phone. People has successfully downgraded directly to RC29 with success.

[PR] Rooting For devs only

I am starting this to get working on rooting this bad boy, if you are not going to have anthing useful to say or contribute that please do not comment. This thread is for work, not bi*ching or complaing about how bad you want root. If you want to that than please go HERE. Im not trying to be a a$$ but i have been down this road before and its a long and tireing road, and the more people that complain it makes anyone not want to help.
Ok so here is what I have been trying.
Trying to confirm if gold gards work or not, if you want to try and make one than go here, follow the steps and than reboot to bootloader (volume down and power) than select the simlock option if you get not a valid key card than you did somthing wrong or htc changed somthing with the gold card.
If you get it to work than you might be able to flash this ROM it is a older rom than what was released with our phones. WARNING YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FLASH BACK TO THE CURRENT ROM UNTILL WE GET A RUU FOR IT.
Why am i trying to get the gold card woking, well if we can get it working than we may be able to get the desire method to work for us, if not than were stuck for right now.
Im not exactly sure what Paul did. Maybe you could shoot him a tweet? I think it involved the gold card but it involved scripts and things of that nature. What other options might we have? We have an older bootloaded on the incredible right? Or does the .77 indicate version number specific to our model? I think the Legend has .80 but maybe the version are model specific and dont mean anything. Maybe find another htc device with bootloader .77 and see what vulnerabilities it had/has?
Any vulns will not be in the boot loader, they will be in the system. And yes his method did involve a gold card, that is why i am trying to get it work, but here is the problem, there is a simlock option in the bootloader and what if you have a proper gold card than you should be able to run this option, but mine keeps saying "invalid key card". I think maybe HTC changed somthing or they disabled gold cards, wich would not suprise me, as they did with the eris. Anyway as right now our only options are to get a gold card working or find a linux kernel exploit for privlage escalation. And even at that point, it looks like we will have more hoops to jumpthrough after that.
And I did shoot paul a tweet and he is NOT going to work on a root method for us.
Ok just a update here is what paul did, he had a rom signed with test keys, the reson for the gold card is to flash a generic rom, so as of right now we screwed. Unless somone can get a test rom that is for our device that has a higher bootloader than we have right now. IF we can get that than we can use the rest of what paul did but untill than we are stuck.
So anyone from HTC out there Or VZW that can get me a Test signed rom???? any help would be greatly apreictated.
I'm not a dev but is there any reason we couldn't use the same exploit cyanogen used on the g1 the CVE-2009-2692 exploit says it effects our kernel on the national vulnerability database. Just a thought for people way smarter than myself.
lol that has been patched for a long long long time.
I have a working goldcard and when I select simlock option it gives me this
simlock
0: SD FAT32 init ok
255: NOT KEY CARD !!!
Process done, reboot device?

I have a working goldcard and when I select simlock option it gives me this
I have been trying the goldcard method but i do not have a working PB31IMG.img so i always get a wrong image error!!
EDIT: "Im trying to root just like they did the Mytouch 3g"
EDIT2: "I am well aware of the risk and by doing this. I know I will not be able to flash to the latest Shipped_RUU untill we have the RUU."

from all the knowledge ive accumulated a goldcard will only sim unlock the device meaning available to use on different networks. as this is verizon we dont have sim cards so virtually there is nothing to unlock(other than our bootloader and fastboot which dont pertain to a goldcard so i think)
as for pb31img i am unaware as to what this is. it is possible that it handles radio functions and that would be useless for us cdma incredible owners
and to others try to stay on topic i really wanna root my baby

A goldcard can be used to root a device, in fact that's the only way to root some devices. A gold card is a specially prepared MicroSD, not a sim card.
Ok I'm only going to say this once, STAY ON TOPIC, THIS THREAD IS NOT FOR FUNNY BUSINESS, OR COMPLAINING, DO IT SOME WERE ELSE.
As far as PB31IMG.zip that is what the bootloader will look for when entering hboot. This is the zip file that will hold the Rom. Gold cards use to allow you to flash unsigned roms, now what the main use is to cid unlock your device so you can load a different carriers Rom, but the gold card method is changing and who knows if we can even use them.
Once again I am all for having fun and joking around but please keep it out of this thread.
i found out how to get to recovery to flash roms. has anyone tried to flash a rom?
i see where your going with the goldcard but i think flashing from recovery would be a easier route
Not going to work unless we get a custom recovery.
well would we be able to flash a signed rom in recovery??
Well yes and no recovery is used to flash updates and the bootloader will flash a full Rom with img files, and both have to be signed and they both have to be equal to or a higher version than what you have on your device.
thanks for clarifying

[Q] Questions about ADP1

so my friend recently gave me his old G1, and i did some searching around and discovered that HTC made a dev version. now, being new to android, i have absolutely no clue what the differences are. i want to update my adp1 to froyo, but i get lost when i look up stuff about rooting or whatever. can anyone dumb it down for me or link me to an easy to follow walkthrough? i'm not sure whether or not guides for the g1/dream can be applied to the dev version. please help a noob in need
ADP1 shipped with bootloader 0.95.3000 whereas non-ADP shipped with 0.95.0000. 3000 let you flash unsigned images. That is the difference.
Note that all 0.95 SPLs are obsolete now.

x_x wow thanks
going to try and decipher these forum posts now

That is the way that most of us rooted our phones. It's reasonable simple, downgrade, type teldnetd, open telnet app, install a recovery, update radio, set boot partitions(if using customMTD)/install danger SPL, and flash CM. If you would like to get as much performance as possible from your phone, I suggest using ezterry's rom, but for that you will need to update the radio and spl through adb and fastboot, which is a little bit more advanced. If you need anything don't be afraid to ask.

hm so i'm looking at the instructions on the link you gave me; i won't be able to login to my google account without a 3g plan huh? i guess i'll have to get that before i do anything?
and it doesn't matter that i have the ADP1 instead of just a regular G1?

Well in that case use this link, since your bootloader is already factory unlocked, you can use the fastboot commands to flash a recovery image. You will need to have adb and fastboot from the android sdk installed on your computer. There are guides in the rom bible on the development forum to help you with that.
EDIT: and try this trick for skipping the initial login so that you can use wifi to sign in if you have to.

unfortunately that trick does not work with the ADP1 =(
i flashed with DREAIMG.nbh and cannot bypass the setup thing; then i discovered this article: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
which i completed up until the "installing drivers" step that i don't know how to complete because the computer doesn't even recognize that a device is plugged in, so now my phone thinks it's a G1 and i cannot get past the login screen and i cannot complete the ADB setup with my phone. what do i do?
---------------
EDIT: alright so i bypassed the login by swapping SIMs with a friend who has a 3G plan, but anyhow, when i plug it into my comp, i don't get an option to "Install drivers from my pc" according to the guide i referenced earlier in this post....
