broken screen, and questions - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

well, today i dropped my brand new week old sprint hero, first drop and it shattered the screen.
for one, i would like to order a replacement screen myself and was wondering if the hero 3g screens are the same as the htc hero cdma screen?
on ebay they are dirt cheap, 50 bucks, opposed to sprints 100 dollar repair fee..
for two,
how do you guys protect your screens? whats the best way to prevent this happening again? (without stating the obvious.. i should've been careful.. i stood up with it on my lap and it dropped screen first into concrete.)
the screen does still work but it's severly shattered on the top half, touch still works i just have a peice of tape over it so it's usable for now.

That sucks, the two times i have dropped my Hero i was getting out of the car, and forgot i had placed the phone in my lap. Thankfully only a few nicks in the side was all it caused.
As for your question...
copy/pasted straight from htc.com...

Not sure if that means thy are the same, or different. Have you tried HTC customer support?
http://www.htc.com/us/about-htc/phone-contact.html

If you're handy with tools... and are good with modifying things, you could buy a new screen, then remove the glass from it (not sure how you would do this... probably possible though) and replace the glass with a custom cut piece of plastic. My dad made window well covers out of this material that has the same durability as glass (ie. doesn't scratch like plastic), but doesn't break like glass. I don't remember what it's called, but you might be able to cut a screen out of that, and then replace the glass with it. Then you'd have all the benefits of plastic and glass, without any downsides.

you know, i'd really love to do that, but i believe that the digitizer keeps me from doing that. theres really not too much readily availiable information about how to fix this cdma version on the web, but thats what happens when it's only a month old.
HTC says in their FAQ that they WILL not take part orders (unless you get one of them insider lines, which doesn't work for sprint atm)
i bought sprint insurance without reading the fine print. i thought i was covered in the event of a accidental drop, turns out physical damage automatically triggers the 100 dollar fee, and i thought it was horse ****, being my device is only a week old and now i gotta trade it in for more then likely someone elses device that who knows what it's been through. they will not repair the phone even though it's not physical damange rendered the phone fully broken (as the touch screen still works and so on)...
mmeh... i hate cellphone companys..
300 dollars for a phone...
100 dollars the next week to replace that phone...
****.. what next?

That is bs
we gotta pay insurance if the phone is just defective and not our fault and if it is we gotta pay 100$
Perhaps you could just brick the phone and say you turned it on one day and it is unresponsive. Then the screen doesn't have a factor in the phone being replaced but that would be fraud and I cant recommend that.

does anyone have anymore input on this?
i'm in search for a guide to take the phone apart..
does that violate my insurance with sprint? (the 7 dollar full equipment coverage)
i can't imagain it would be harder then the other HTC phones since they have almost the same layout just different shaped, the ribbon cords require a tool that isn't too hard to aquire.
has anyone found a wholesale place to order HTC hero screens from?

Here is how you disassemble it. Looks easy. Give it a shot.

Is it "obvious" that the phone took a fall? If not, then you could probably get it replaced by calling AT&T's handset repair department (800-801-1101, I think) and just lie to them.
I never had a screen issue with my 8125, but I did brick around 7 of them from various issues with flashing custom roms. As long as I was careful with how I worded it, I got a new phone each time.

Screens don't just crack. They'll sniff out the lie.
and another one...i do feel better now after i broke mine, since it is a tilt u should be able to go through service see how much that will cost, if its over $200 u might be better off doing it urself by getting a screen elsewhere
My screen was cracked after 4 days of having it :')
It was inside my pocket without any further protection and i walked against something. Did cost me 136 euro to fix the screen.

where did you get yous fixed?
Unless you insured it somehow, you're going to have to pay to replace it. I don't see why anyone should pay for your accident if you didn't arrange coverage for it somehow.
they don't allow you to get insurance on it.
AT&T might not, but you can add it to your homeowners/renters policy or secure outside insurance from a third party (Safeware is one that I'm aware of). Mine is covered under my homeowner's insurance at a very low cost.
aite. but what do i do?

You go buy a replacement or get the screen fixed. They're not going to believe that you didn't break it yourself. I believe PocketPC Techs advertises that they can fix the screen.

I cracked my screen just s few days after getting it. I just repaired it this morning.
Contact njbridges here on the forum, or go to www.phoneystore.com and order the LCD from him. You have to get the whole LCD, as the digitizer portion is not available as a separate component. It cost me $120 + shipping to the US. He even included all the tools you need to make the repair. It literally took me 15 minutes to do. There are 4 torx screws under the display to remove, and then you use the separator tool that is included to remove the top housing. Once you've done that, unplug the LCD, slide it out, slide the new one in, reconnect the LCD, reassemble the top plastics, replace the screws, power back on, and you're done.
It's really simple to do. Why pay someone else to do it (especially if you're given the correct tools for the job).
Regards,
Jeff
Send it to at&t just don't tell them that the screen is broken tell them that it doesn't turn on, it worked for me and my 8125.

Me, too.
I just got back from Panama City, Panama where I was without my screen for a week. I talked on my phone while leaving the mall, put it in my pocket and pulled it out 15 minutes later after getting out of a taxi and the screen was broken. I'll be calling AT&T as this is my business' corp account. I had insurance on my Treo and my 8125, but think I may have dropped it on this one.
It does suck. The phone was three weeks old. I've gone back to my 8125 that's gone through hell and back without any problems....
I've got my fingers crossed or else I'll just order the screen myself.

Any time. One thing to note, putting the outer plastic cover back on is a little bit of a bear - it's a tight fit. you will need to put some serious pressure on the housings to snap them together. It's especially difficult on the power button side of the phone. I used a small flat screwdriver between the top and the keyboard to support the carrier plastics on the top and then used thumb pressure to snap the top plastic to the carrier.

As someone who has been through quite a few exchanges with Cingular (none since AT&T officially took over), and as a former employee of a Cingular warranty service provider, I can tell you that they do cover screen damage under very specific circumstances.
When going through the process on the phone, they will ask you basic questions like:
"Is there a pink strip under the battery?" - Indicates water damage
"Was the phone ever dropped from a distance greater than 2 feet?" - This is the important question for screen damage. Damage sustained from drops of 18 inches or less are covered.
It is a reasonable assumption that a cell phone, which is handheld most of the time, will be dropped on occasion.
The biggest question is whether or not the phone shows signs of "physical abuse". If you can answer no to that, then you should have no problem getting your phone exchanged.

Broken Touch Diamond Screen

Hi
I recently dropped my diamond a few days ago and caused a big crack around the top right corner of my diamond.(it was only on a wodden floor ive dropped my n95 on concrete before and i havn't got a scratch) I didnt have any insurance or any cover on it. I rang up the htc customer helpline and they couldn't give me a final price, they quoted between £50-£100!!! I then rang up orange and they said that they would swap it for a one off fee of £30 + atleast a 4 month subscription to orange care at £6 a month. This comes to £54 which is a bit better but still quite a bit. It isnt the actual lcd screen broken and from what I can see its just the touch screen on top.(unless theres another layer of something). The phone is working fine, theres no problems using the touch screen except for when i tap it I can see pressure marks around the crack being applied to the lcd screen.
Is there any other place that could repair my phone for a cheaper price? I did look for the touch screen and I can get it for £30 but I would not want to risk opening my phone up and causing more damage.
Thank you
p.s. I can upload pictures of the crack if required
its better in the long run to send it off to a service center
this is a bit tough because it will cost you but thats the price
that you will have to pay, it will better in the long run than
buying the screen and doing a DIY bodge job on your phone.
HD
I am in the same side as HtcDia on that.
Send your phone to HTC, you'll pay the price but it's worth it.
Well I disagree with the other two posters in this thread.
I had a similar problem with a samsung phone and finally I bought the screen off ebay and ventured to change it myself (with some courage and no experience at all in this matters) and I succeeded!!.
Wall, as your phone isn't covered by warranty if I where you I'll try to change the touchscreen myself as it is the outermost layer it'll probably be easier.
Good luck
Who said his phone's not covered by warranty? Dropping it and cracking the screen isn't covered, but by replacing it yourself you'll likely void any warranty you do have. This means if you have problems in the future that are actually HTC's fault, and not just a simple mistake, they won't fix it for you. I know it sucks, it's not a good position to be in when you're down 50 pounds for a completely unintentional mishap... But I think that's the way to go. Sorry.

$100 serviced Hd2 repair goes awry

I took my shattered glass HD2 in to replace the glass today at a local store. I was quoted $100 for the glass replacement. I thought, "hey excellent price. I'd rather pay a bill than ruin my phone by doing it myself." (I have fixed all my prior lcds on my phones just FYI) Needless to say about 5 hours later they tell me that due to the damaged state of the phone the lcd was affected as well from the jarring it took when it was shattered. Apparently there were was one large tear of the anti-glare coat on the top left hand side and two other areas where it was lifted as well.
I tried calling them out by saying the technician did not take the required precautions to avoid tearing the anti-glare coat on the lcd when separating the digitizer and lcd.
Unfortunately, I had the option of continuing as is or ordering an lcd screen from them for another $100. The owner who seemed pretty nice said he would try and see if he could get the price on the replacement lcd lowered. Personally, I believe I should not have to pay for the lcd since it was NOT damaged when I took it in.
I probably don't have any recourse though since they say it's a risk associated with this phone. I should have just bought the combo together and done it myself. That's what I get for trying to save a few dollars.
Would you gentlemen have any suggestions?
theres not really much you can do unless you just want to live with it. i was going to suggest getting a warranty replacement but realized it voids warranty when taken apart. if you want things done right DIY cant really rely on shops to do anything anymore..
That sucks. I'd want to be damn sure they are replacing the screen with a genuine article too.
Unfortunately you can't really prove that the membrane wasn't damaged prior to them touching the phone so it will be hard to get out of this one without forking out extra, however I suppose you could always politely threaten them with legal action and a public flaming on a busy internet forum if they don't want to play nice.
It's worked for me i nthe past when i've had issues with car servicing.
Warranty?

No warranty for physical damage to unit. Insurance would have covered it, if insurance was purchased? I did..

[Q] Touch Screen & LCD Screen Broken (Need replacement suggestions)

My HTC Hero has a broken touch screen and LCD screen.
Can anyone suggest a cheap place to get them from?
And if anyone is wondering how it broke, I ran it over with my van.
Not intentionally of course.
Phone is from Alltel so it would be $95 to claim it on insurance
Also does anyone have any suggestions what I can put on the screen until I can replace it? It's rough on the fingers to use because of the cracks.
EBAY
Yup eBay has every spare part you would want for your Hero. I just ordered a digitizer yesterday (thats your screen), and that all you need to replace if behind the broken digitizer is a clear picture on your lcd.
This has happened to me twice. I got replacement on ebay for 30 dollars. It includes the whole front panel, touch screen digitizer, and lcd screen. It took me 5 minutes to replace. Just a couple of screws and a connector. Easy Peasy!
I dropped my hero yesterday as well. There was no damage to the screen/ LCD but there are a few scratches to the body. Are there replacements for that as well?
Supposedly sprint will fix any physical damages to the phone, as long as it still works.
supposed to do it for $35 in store without the $7 protection plan.
http://bit.ly/g5RfAB < Goes to the repair part of sprint's website.
I haven't tried it, so let us know if they will fix it.
I was quoted $35 by two different sprint stores to replace my screen. Still haven't fixed it yet, it is only a small crack in the corner and doesn't bug me that much.

Put regular tape over it

I bought that before..include LCD, Digitizer, and Front Bezel. The bezel was scuffed up and had a few nicks but the digitizer and LCD were in perfect condition.
Don't try that at home
Based on personal experience
I strongly advise against attempting a DIY screen replacement.
Here's my sad story:
1) I dropped my poor little hero, then managed to step on it screen down, completely scratching the entire screen surface.
2) I went on eBay and spent about $40 for a replacement screen/digitizer kit.
3) The kit arrived 10 days later. Very nice package - appeared to be high quality.
4) I followed the directions to the letter. (fwiw I'm generally pretty skilled at this sort of repair stuff, and have repaired other phones and computers with good results).
5) My little hero is no more. It works like crap. None of the buttons work correctly. The trackball no longer works consistently. It's essentially unusable (except maybe as a backup storage device).
If any good can come of this, perhaps it will be that others will read my sad tale and avoid a similar fate!

When you stepped on it it probably damaged the motherboard or some other part because the digitizer doesn't really have anything to do with the trackball.
You do have to make sure the trackball housing is inserted correctly in the new bezel. Also, do not overtighten the screws on the bottom or the buttons work wonky. I just tightened them a little, checked, and made sure I didn't over tighten.

Cracked Screen???

Damn it. I just dropped my SGS from about a foot and a half off the floor and the glass/screen cracked. The phone still works fine but I don't think I can live with it like this. Is it possible to get it fixed? How expensive an endeavor is it to get the glass replaced?
Edit: I don't know if it makes any difference but it's really just the glass that is broken. The display still looks fine and works fine. I'm not sure how these things are constructed and if just the glass can be replaced or if the entire thing needs to be changed. I'm worried that by continuing to use it and carry it around in my pocket that the display may become damaged.
What are the chances that I can get samsung or bell to replace it outright if I stress test it and the SD/motherboard fails again.

If you decide to change the screen on your own, check my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745262. Replacing my own screen thru repair service would have cost 250€ and by changing it by myself it cost 90€. These days you can get new screen from ebay with ~50€.
Where did you spend the extra 40€ above the cost of the screen? I've not read anything about the repair process but did find some ebay listings for replacement screens for $55, which isn't bad at all.

Phone was very new on the market when I bought the screen. That's the reason why screen cost 90€ then. 2 weeks after I bought it the price dropped to ~50€
