Running CyanogenMod-4.2.4 need to activate over wifi - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have successfully flashed my phone with the CyanogenMod-4.2.4 rom, enabled WIFI and can browse the internet.
BUT, when I try to activate my Gmail through the activation wizard with WIFI enabled I get the following error message: “Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server.”
I am using a T-Mobile pre-paid account, which means I don't have a data plan, so activation over WIFI is my only option.
Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Frustrating is more like it. I have spent days search this forum and the web for an answer.
I started out with CyanogenMod-4.2.3 installed and I thought that might have been the problem so last night I flashed 4.2.4 and still have the same problem.
I can browse the internet so I have a hard time believing it is a connection problem. I did come across a post earlier this week where someone was having issues with his WPA2 connection. Later today I will change the connection type and see if that fixes the problem.
If you can think of anything else I might try that would be great.
Thanks for the quick reply.

I changed my WIFI settings to WEP and WPA but still got the same error. Any more suggestions would be great.

The problem is probably due to gapps failing
keep trying and maybe it will go through

I finally got it to work and for those who may run across this thread with the same issue here what I did:
I ran across a thread on a different forum that stated the reason I was having the problem was because I skipped the initial activation process when the phone was first turned on. Well with CM4.2.4 and other rooted roms there is an option to skip the initial activation process, which I did.
So I went back and reread the other threads about how to activate your phone over wifi and they all state the same thing, you will need root access, which allows you access to execute debug commands from your PC to control your phone.
So I did a hard reset and re-flashed CM4.2.4. Then after I rebooted my phone I followed the instruction on this thread http://modmygphone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9471 to turn on the wifi. Once the wifi was on I disconnected my phone from my computer and proceeded to activate it, which worked like a charm.

TYTN II WiFI would not activate

Friends,
I've been proud of my TYTN II for the last thre months that I've owned it... until recently though.
Last week, my WiFi connection stopped getting activated/swichted on. Howsoever, I may try, it would not get activated, leave alone discover the network.
I tried re-flashing it, soft-resetting, hard-resetting, I mean practically everything I could, but to no avail.
Has anyone faced this problem before, and found a solution to the same. Would appreciate if you could share the same with me. I really do not want to take it for servicing, as I fear it would take me easily a week to get it back if I take it to the Workshop.
Thanks in advance,
Atul
Let me ask a couple of questions.
Can you turn wifi on or do you get an error?
If wifi turns on does it see any access points?
have you flashed your rom on your phone?
have you tried another access point for wifi?
do you have any wifi applications installed like wififofum?
Hi Chumley,
thanks for the prompt response...
I do not get any error, not even any message hen I try to activate the WiFi. Just that the rainbow circle keeps rotating (hour-glass equivalent of indows), and then shows the WiFi is still inactive (small x near the WiFi icon).
I tried re-flashig with the latest ROM available on the HTC website, but to no avail.
Trying another access point does not help either, neither would it, I guess, since its not a problem of signal strength, as much as it seems to be of the Wireless on the Kaiser not getting activated.
No 3rd party applications installed either, after the last re-flashing, still no luck.
Anything from the above, that rings a bell?
If it does it after a flash I would think you have a defective wireless adapater. Sorry.
Guess it should not be a problem as mine is still under warranty... just abt. 3 months old. But my only worry is, as I mentioned in the original post, the time it would tk. to get it fixed by the Service Centre, or if at all it is a correctible problem... I think time to ask for a favour from a friend... a standby mobile while I await mine back
If you let it go free and it comes back, then it's yours forever.
Hello, same problem here:
two days ago my wifi connection stopped suddenly and cannot activate it from the comm manager. When I click in the WIFI Icon, rainbow circle keeps rotating and PDA perfomance goes down.
any ideas :?
Hueznar,
I've already given mine for repair at Service Centre two days back, and am still awaiting it back.
Shall let you know how it goes once I get it back
WiFi would not activate: Motherboard concked off
My PDA motherboard conked off... and it wud take 3 weeks to get it back with a new motherboard !!

Are you sure this is the only reason & solution, for I have an IDENTICAL matter of the problem, but I never thought something was wrong with the HardWare..., damn I love HTC
I know I saw this thread too late (and finally) but if you please could respond with any news?
thanx
I'm not sure what is wrong with my Wifi...need help
I don't know why...really.
The comm manager stays on good, but when I try an access point it starts with the Connecting... then after a few seconds it stops and goes Unavailable.
My router works good with my bros and sis MAC books.
So I have no idea why.
Can anyone help?

Wifi access point problem
I had a problem where suddenly after months of use with my home wifi router, it suddenly would not connect with the router anymore. Would show that it was trying to connect, and then would suddenly not connect and try another router on the list.
I tried reseting and everything. Tried re-entering the password for my router as I thought that was the problem. finally the only fix i found to work was to actually delete the access point from the phone... then reset and then let it find it all over again from scratch. And miraculously that time it worked.
I know this is not exactly your problem, but hope it helps.

By changing it to channel 1 in my router, it kinda worked..
It says Available now. Nothing else... The connect option it still there button left.
That's my update.
just in case letting you know that I disabled all MEdia net and ISP GPRS so I won't get charged because I'm not paying for my onlince services or any mobile plan with internet.
My brother told me that all WIFI connects directly to internet and it won't matter if I don't have a plan for mobile.
Correct me here, if im wrong.
Thanks.

HELP - Cannot connect 3G/GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA problem

Hi Friends!
Now seems that I have a serious problem, my Kaiser still with the "Cannot connect" problem, displaying the following message in any data transfer attempt:
"Cannot connect for an unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap Settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacture's documentation and try again."
Ive checked the connection settings lots of times, tried all RADIO versions.
Tried setting network band manually for GSM, PAP and CHAP authentication, enabled and disabled HSDPA without success.
The same SIM card works perfectly in another cell phone, but other SIM card (from other operator) didn't work either in my Kaiser.
Ive noticed, doing some internet search, that this problem used to happen in other HTC models, but I couldnt figure a way to solve the problem or what were its true origin.
Tnx in advance for your attention and help!

similar issue, now happened twice
I had this issue once before. After getting the run around, they determined that the radio was bad. I sent it in and they replaced it. Now a year later i am having the same issue. I have noticed that if i am traveling(driving), ocassionaly it will start to work again. I "think" that gprs works, but when it changes to "edge" it fails, or just works for a few hours....
Bye the way, I am using an unlocked phone on t-mobile.

Hmmm
Does this message appear when emailing only?
Or does it appear also when browsing, say by using PIE?
Last week I had a problem where I couldn't email at all on my Tilt nut was able to browse.
I put my SIM card on my E51 and no problems at all.
I went back to my Tilt, tried everything I could think of w/o success, so I finally had to HR and reinstall (this was the 1st time even a restore from a previous good backup didn't help).

[Q] WiFi Tether Won't Work (even with correct settings)?

I'm running OMJ's ROM and using WiFi Tether TrevE Mod "Version 3.2-beta-modv5-***Synergized***"
Okay so even with the settings that everyone recommends for the HTCone, and a few modifications, I still cannot get the blasted thing to work.
Settings I've tried:
Profile: Generic ICS/JB(wlan0)
Setup-Method: Auto
Encryption ON (p/w is the correct format AFAIK, about 12 lowercase letters no numbers, similar to the default)
Changed SSID to "HTCone" no spaces
Wifi Driver Reload (1) checked
MSS Clamping checked
Routing Fix checked
With those settings, I can't even get it to broadcast. It says it's running but no devices can find it. It simply isn't there.
If I disable Wifi Driver Reload (1) it begins broadcasting. However, when I attempt to connect, the second device just sits there at "Obtaining IP Address..." for about 90 seconds then retries and gets stuck at "Authenticating" then back. An endless loop never resulting in a connection.
The most frustrating thing about this is that it was JUST working the day before. I didn't touch ANYTHING and it just decided to take a dump.
Addendum: I was looking at the notes in the bottom of the ABOUT screen and I noticed the updates are quite old. Is it possible I have an old version that doesn't work with the HTC One? I got it from QBKING77's website.
Happened to me and don't have an answer. I wiped and didn't restore anything to resolve it. Restoring data broke it again.

I followed this guide that worked for my Note II and I have no problems. I'm typing this message from my laptop tethered to my ONE. I have WiFi-driver reload 2 checked.

I had no luck wiping the phone and re-installing the ROM. It was still FUBAR after the fresh flash of OMJ. What drives me NUTS about that is the fact that it was JUST working not 12hrs before it stopped working.
To give some more information as to the issue, it appears that checking either one (or both) of the Force Driver options causes it to not broadcast at all. If either of those two are checked, the hotspot isn't even visible to any device. If left unchecked, the hotspot becomes visible. However, upon trying to connect to the hotspot, it gets stuck in a loop of "Authenticating..." then "Obtaining IP address" which never results in a connection.
I've tried the options listed in that guide you posted, but to no avail.
So, at this point, I'm wondering if it's just because I'm using an outdated WiFi hotspot app. If anyone has one that's been updated since a little under a year ago, I'd appreciate a link. Thanks!

Not sure which one you are using but I'm using the one right from the Play Store v3.3 beta 2. You can also get it from here. I just went back to SWG 1.18 from a 4.2.2 ROM and reinstalled and all is good. Everything connects just fine using those settings from the link I posted earlier.

In the first post I listed which version I was using. Unfortunately, even the newest version fails to work. I don't get this. Maybe it has something to do with the OMJ ROM and how close to stock it is. Perhaps I should try a different ROM.
This is a far cry from the CM7 ROM I had on my EVO which allowed me to tether perfectly all the time without the hassle. Maybe I'll try CM again on my One.
I'm gonna download & flash OMJ's ROM & see if I can recreate it. You running the latest version right?

Similar issue here
I'm having issues with wifi tether on my HTC One, as well. I can tell you that if you set the Device-Profile to "Auto," it will create an ad-hoc connection that my Windows 7/Ubuntu Studio desktop will recognize. Ubuntu recognizes it as a regular wifi hotspot, and connects automatically. Windows recognizes it as an ad-hoc connection, and I have to connect manually. My Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 does not see the connection at all, and neither does my LG Blu-Ray player. If I change the profile to Generic ICS/JB (wlan 1), then other devices see the connection, and will even attempt to connect to it, but there is never a successful connection with internet access. If I choose Generic ICS/JB (wlan 0), then nothing sees it as a viable connection. I am running the stock sense ROM, and have done no updates (so I'm still at JB 4.1). I can tell you that wifi tether errors frequently for me, and I have to reboot quite a lot. If I leave my phone broadcasting overnight, then in the morning wifi tether thinks that I don't have root, and gives me the "your phone is in an unknown state" error message; at that point, the only way to stop the wifi is to reboot.
So, I can make it work, for a limited number of devices. I would like to use it as a wifi connection for my tablet and my Blu-Ray player, however. I have searched quite a bit to try to figure this out, and I haven't been able to find a reliable answer. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
I got mine to work. Can surf the web, check email, etc. now the damn thing will not stream video. I am connected to 4g and speed test on my ipad verify it but won't stream. Pisses me off.

[Q] T-Mobile HTC One WiFi not working after update

Early last week I ran an OTA update that took my phone 4.3 and 3.24.531.3. After the update the WiFi was connecting to wireless networks but was not receiving an internet. I tried changing the phone name to "HTC One" like many others have done and that didn't fix the problem. So I unlocked, rooted, and flashed a custom ROM thinking that would fix it. I was still experiencing the same problem.
So last night I relocked and ran an RUU to take me back to completely stock so I could run the next OTA update to take me to 4.4.2 and 4.19.531.10. But since I was not able to access any WiFi I had to use internet pass-though connected to my laptop. Even after the 4.4.2 update, I'm experiencing the same WiFi problem, but now I can't turn WiFi on at all. I have not tried re-unlocking and rooting yet either.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this?

Yes, I understand that. I've done it before. Last tine it was named "Android_xxx" with some numbers and a letter I think. I tried that when I was one 4.3 and it didn't solve anything
First I have to get the WiFi to even turn on at all now
Just unlocked, rooted, and flashed with ViperOne 5.0.0 and I'm still experiencing the same problems. What's weird is that after the first boot, when you are asked to connect to a wireless network, my home network shows up, so that tells me the WiFi is on when it boots, but when I tried to connect, it failed.
Then once I was finished with the initial setup, WiFi won't turn back on, even if I go into the settings and try to turn it on manually.

Hotspot "Authentication failed. Please try again later." message

Hi, I was just curious if anyone on here has ever got this message when trying to turn on the hotspot. I use straight talk with verizon towers. I have looked on line for a fix and have found forums with people who have the same problem and no one can seem to figure out if it is a phone problem or a carrier problem. Any help would be appreciated.

I tried having straight talk do some things to try and fix it but they just made it worse. I went to Visible and it works fine now.
I was able to get mine working by Settings / System / Reset options / Reset
Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth / then reboot phone. It wiped out all my settings for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Pain in the butt but, they are easy enough to add back. Hotspot is working though.
both my and my wife's phone, resetting APN & network settings has had no impact.
We're both on Pixel 7 Pro btw, just found your thread via search.
