Adding root to a custom build.. devs, a little help please? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I'm messing about with building android from the source, just as a learning process and for my own personal satisfaction at this point.
I've come most of the way under my own steam.. got a build up and running from the donut-plus-aosp branch, all google apps included and working.. but I don't actually know how to include root access in the build.. I know this is probably an embarrasingly simple question for a dev, and I feel suitably stupid for having to ask.
Also.. now you're here.. apps2sd.. do I need to compile anything special for that or is it just a bunch of symlinks in init.rc?
Muchos gracias.

I believe the root access is located in the kernel (boot.img)
You would also want to include the SU binaries and busybox.
For the apps2sd, the apps2sd script is run from the init.rc IIRC
Do not hold me up on this because I have not even looked at Android yet, but this is what I gather from reading the forums. I'm hoping it may give you a little direction while someone who has actually built from the source steps in

Thanks. I've already included the su binary and superuser apk but couldn't launch them, so I thought I must be missing something either in the kernel or init.rc.
I was hoping not to have to build the kernel manually just yet.. walk before you can fly and all that, but maybe it's time to grow some wings.

You should just compile cyanogen's kernel. he has it on his github. btw.. did you add busybox? i think apps2sd requires it but im not sure.(check logcat on startup, see what errors its throwing)

I've just added busybox in, but I can't do anything with apps2sd until I get root sorted.
I'm sticking with the 2.6.29-donut kernel for now.. cyan's includes loads of patches that I don't understand yet.. I'll compile it and see what happens purely as an experiment but I reckon it'll give me problems...

Just looking at the configuration options for cyan's kernel makes me feel like a dad trying to program a vcr

LOL
btw if your building from ASOP, it should already have root. I think you only need to add it to T-mobile OTA's
I know I hate looking at kernels. Liquefies my mind

It's not working for me.. I just get "permission denied"

Well I've got root by running chmod 4777 on /bin/sh, but this leaves root access wide open to everything and bypasses the confirmation check from superuser.apk... Come on devs, I could really do with a few tips here!

I think I've got it now... thanks to all the devs, you were a real help here.

i know, they are so helpful right?
Actually they never come by here anymore because of the supernoob questions
I suggest you try to pm,twitter, or website the devs. many of them are very helpful, but cannot stand noobs. as long as you do your research (like u did) you should get help

Hmmm, as I'm also building AOSP from scratch, I would have liked you to have at least posted the conclusion. I feel like several pages were ripped out of my copy of the story.

[AUDIO FILES] Have a very OGG-y AudioResources.zip (EDITED 2:11pm)

IF I'M USING YOUR RESOURCES.ZIP, LET ME KNOW SO I CAN CREDIT YOU!
I didn't see anyone having done this before on a search, and I apologize if it's been done already. I put together all the audio resources I could find for ringtones, alarms, notifications, and ui, converted them all to very small .ogg's and put them in a new zip. It's a little over 9 megs and has a LOT of stuff. Enjoy.
Oh, and if you have more to add, post them. I'll convert them it and add it to the zip
DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
1. Unzip
2. IF you are using a media2sd script, put the media folder on your ext partition. If not, use it to replace the one on your phone. I recommend using adb, or just mounting the thing in linux. It'll make it simpler.
3. REBOOT and give your phone some time to index all the ringtones. It'll take some time.
AudioResources.zip:
http://www.lighthousesolutions.info/AudioResources.zip
EDIT:
A LOT of people are downloading and nobody is posting additional links, which means (I hope) that I didn't miss any sound files. I'm glad I could help people out, and if anybody else has anything to contribute please POST! Thanks.
Also, I forgot to post this the first time. Themers and rom developers (hell anyone) feel free to use the converted .ogg's in whatever you want. They aren't mine to start with, but I figure I better make the statement clear.
Enjoy
Dead link above
My compilation is on page 3 ~Mikey~
Thanks! Can't have too many random ringtones to choose from I say. Already got the giant mega audio resource list from the other topic that includes all the various android phones, this will just help more.

I think this includes all of those, although if you find some that I'm missing, please post them. The main draw of this is that all of sound files are as tiny as possible, making it so you can fit them on internal memory if you want to, or just use less space. The entire thing is only 9.4 mb, and it includes the ringtones from the hero and magic.
Post any ringtones it doesn't contain so I can squish them down to tiny size too.
I can't find any media2sd scripts on the forum. Can any one point me in the right direction?

You don't have your rom in your sig, so my help will have to be very basic. I run cyanogen's experimental rom (not for the faint of heart) and huanyu's user customizable script. Other than that I can't offer much help. What I can say is that if you push the ENTIRE contents of this zip to your ext partition on your sd card and use huanyu's script with media2sd activated, you'll be fine.
Huanyu also has a version of his script for the stable series of cyanogens roms.
I have NO idea how to do media2sd on hero. I don't support hero as an os and will never use it unless the ENTIRE android community decides to go that route.
If you are using another rom let me know and I'll see what I can do.
I'm currently on Drizzy's newest hero build, but the guts are the same. I went back and did some research and that script is working thanks for the help.

No problem, and I'm glad they're working out for you. So far I've got over 100 downloads, so it seems people like this.
Anybody with any additional tones to be added? I'd really like to beef it up!
I'd love to give you some of miine but I don't have any that don't have a copyright next to it but if you want them anyway I'll upload them for you.
Thank you mate!

Are any of them for a released or soon to be released android phone? I could put together a "legal" and a "questionable" vesion, although the latter might have to be off the forum (hint hint). I'd like to keep the one on here being full of nothing but official android and htc ringtones for released and soon to be released (ie leaked) android devices.
Noob Question...
I'm running CyanogenMod-4.0.4 + Recovery 1.4 and the community hero rom and was wondering how I should go about implementing this audio resources zip. Do i apply the update from the recovery? Or is there some other way of getting them on?
You can push them to /system/media....but I'd recommend using hyanu's userinit.sh script instead. media2sd is FAR superior for the number of sound files were talking about here.
any chance of this being posted elsewhere? Was looking to download this, but the site doesn't seem to exist.

[MODULE-|-SOURCE] Atrix 4G Overclock Module -- Up to 1.5GHz!

Welcome to the Motorola Olympus (Atrix 4G) Overclock Thread!
Well, I didn't know what to do today, so I've created something useful, an Overclock Module. However, this is incomplete and I need help for completing it.
More specifically, I don't know how to replace the already loaded table with the one written in this module. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it!
TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR PHONES BRICKS.
Status: COMPLETE.
Download:
Compiled module: HERE (Min 200MHz Max 1.4GHz)
Module source: HERE (Outdated. It'll be updated when it'll be cleaned.)
What you need:
1. A brain
2. A ROOTED Atrix
3. Patience
4. PC and SDCARD.
How to load it:
1. Download the compiled module
2. Put it on the root of your sdcard
3. On your ROOTED device, run a terminal emulator and do exactly... this:
Code:
su
cp /sdcard/olympus_overclock.ko /data/
chmod 777 /data/olympus_overclock.ko
cd /data
insmod olympus_overclock.ko
4. Use SetCPU for your profiles
And let me clarify a thing: This isn't a kernel. This is a kernel module
Thanks to:
Skrilax_CZ - Without you, I would never had been completed the work.
iggytom & Bakano - Thanks for your kallsyms logs!
Stay Tuned!
=NOT TESTED....what do you expect...put here some modified kernel and want to us test withou any test made by you? lol
You kiring right?
Exciting but Ill wait till a few brave souls test it out first

he says "completing and uploading"
...maybe he actually plans on testing it first? or maybe he's just trollin'
I've ever done things that I wanted to do.
I'll receive my Atrix next week, so, for now, it isn't tested and it isn't even completed.
DEVS, I need some help. I've modified the struct and, well, sincerely, I don't know how to load it and replace it to the already loaded frequancy table.
I'm posting the source, being confident on other devs that can help me.
P.S.: The module isn't simply setting the maximum frequency for overclocking. Its concept is rewriting the frequency table for getting better scaling and even better battery life adding underclocking features in the future.
EDIT:
@EclipseX
I'm not posting a kernel. Atrix is locked. Read prior to write things.

I don't mean why some people is accusing of trolling when those people don't know who is that guy that is posting these things....

if you had described you just said in your last post in the OP, people wouldn't have been quite as skeptical, it seemed as though you were posting saying you'd already completed (or nearly), but hadn't tested it, and were hoping that others were. That's all.
thanks for the clarification on what this is and what you intend to do
Well yes, I was thinking too much easy because I've done other things like this in the past but then I've discovered that this is different... so..

From the testers point of view before we even get to looking at this, which kernel did you design this for being we now have three currently out with the retail, the leaked feb version, and the OTA update. Pleas provide your how too asap before someone dose something wrong and burn out their device. That said I'm waiting till I see a proper OP before I look at this again, good luck.
Well the OTA's out of the question since it can't be rooted

It is a SOURCE.
A source can be compiled on every kernel you want if you've got the source for it.
Anyway, only the retail version source is out, so for now we can compile it only for the OLYFR_U4_1.2.6's kernel ...... when it gets completed.

Okay guys, I'm going to complete this.
Anyone with the OLYFR_U4_1.2.6 firmware installed can execute this command and upload to me the file?
Code:
cat /proc/kallsyms > /sdcard/kallsyms.log
This command creates a log of the kallsyms in the kallsyms.log file stored on your sdcard.
I need that file for finishing the work.
Thanks!

V6 Super Charger for ICS!

THIS IS NOT MY WORK! I'M POSTING THIS WITH PERMISSION FROM zeppelinrox
Back in the ancient times (Eclair,Froyo,Gingerbread) the stock android launcher was....Slow to put it nicely. Zeppelinrox wrote a script that changes the oom values inside of android to put the launcher in it's rightful place. No more redrawing launchers weird lagging etc etc. He's done it again for ICS.
This is a little more involved than simply executing a script at boot time though. 4.0 is to Gingerbread what Froyo was to Cupcake! Pretty big differences but if you're up to the challenge then feel free to CLICK HERE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276 and check it out for yourself!
I'm just posting this as an additional bit of information. Dropping in from the MyTouch 4G Forum as I recently got a "broken" vibrant from a customer. (Camera just needed reseating)
Oh boy, I think I'm entering this game! Wish me luck.
Arhg, it's really much to do! Any tutorial? I don't ever know what step I should take first! please, explain us what you did. Thanks!
Say why not attach a patched services.jar
Zeppelinrox, could you please provide us with updated info about the installation process?
I see too many files.

i am using the zenwich beta rom, tried this, but got errors during the script run, so i tried updating the SU binary. I ran into trouble setting permissions on the /system/xbin/su
i was using file expert to change permissions, but i guess that wasn't enough.
does this have to get pushed through adb?
ps, i just flashed the newest zenwich beta...#4, so i have a completely fresh machine.
i also understand that you shouldn't/cant change a file that is in use, aas is the case with the /system/xbin/su
and, does zenwich need this mod?
thanks, 1fd

OSA Development

Since this thread is no longer just about me trying to get lollipop running on this phone (I AM still doing that though) I decided to 'rebrand' it as a general development thread for OSA. What's OSA? It stands for Only Some Android...ok so whats that? A team name I came up with to make myself feel more important (btw we're always looking for contributors).
So instead of focusing on just lollipop I will be discussing pretty much anything and everything I am doing in regards to the Desire 510.
Original Post Below:
Hi all, I am currently working on getting lollipop working on the Desire 510. So far I had a successful compile of LiquidSmooth 5.1.1 a couple nights ago but not a successful boot. I am currently 97% done syncing the CyanogenMod 12.1 sources (5.1.1 r3) and am now using the omni twrp sources to ensure a higher compatibility for the recovery, I am hoping for a successful boot soon.
I have the virgin mobile cdma model of the device and that's what I will be targeting although I will do my best to make sure the device tree is universal. If anyone has any insight or advice I am all ears.
I am going to use this thread as a development thread until I get the required 10 posts and I get a booting rom.

Im working on all that, I'm looking into using the msm8974 kernel, from what I have read it's practically identical to the 8226, I am also using the a5 (desire 816) as a template since the two devices are so similar. no worries. yeah you need 10 posts in order to post anything in the development subforums for the devices.
I just pm'd a mod and asked to have the thread moved to the appropriate subforum. Also I am making a LITTLE Progress, it does feel like two steps forward and one step back however. I'm confident that between those of us who are wanting it that it will happen.
Not sure if anyone is interested but I created another slack room under my account if anyone developing for the 510 wants to join and collaborate in order to (hopefully) let this device see its potential. Just pm me and i'll send you an invite.
Quickie update, I keep running in to the same set of errors and I know the answer is right in front of my face but im just not seeing it. I have a sneaking suspicion that I may be missing some headers and libraries on my machine but I can't be sure.
Also I've forgotten how much I dislike working with kernels lol

Most likely because I was trying to patch the stock 64 bit. But you have the CM, RaptorROM that are more vanilla like. If you are lucky you should be getting less rejects then me. :highfive:

If you need help with the rejects just ask. I'm sure I could spare some time to help out

That was really not all that great of an instruction on how to get started with rom building because for 1 unless you have a really super fast computer trying to do that in a VMWARE is going to take forever because the first compile and build takes hours upon hours I'm not kidding when I said you needed to download the entire CyanogenMod or AOSP source code and apparently from all the changes people have made its up over 13GB which is huge mind you the first build is going to give quite a few errors which you'll need to fix by going into your github and making changes to the specific file that needs changing and then repo sync or just change it on your local computer first then push it to github.. You did fork the device tree to your own github right? Then you have to download the device tree source to your local pc in order to even begin building anything. They also need to be in the correct spot by the way or the build is gonna throw an error that it can't find / or so and so doesn't exist.. By the way the 3 device tree files you're gonna need are "Device, Vendor and Kernel.."..

Yes, everything you said is correct. I was only giving him a starting point. I know that porting, in this case patching, is a lot more easier than building, if done properly. If he wants to build and to learn a lot of stuff I personally advice him to follow your advice.
But in the end it's up to him. At least now he has two starting points. :highfive:

That's true, 2 starting points is better than none.. I don't necessarily like "patching" others work because you never really know how they made it or if it has problems which is why I just start from scratch.
Yes starting from scratch was initially what i wanted but i looked around on XDA university for a week and that helped get me to learn about setting up Vm, installing android sdk through terminal ETC and repo init repo sync, downloading repositories and other source codes.....BUT my thing is wanting to learn how patch errors and need more on hands experience for setting up build environment
