[POLL] Prefered File Sharing services for ROM Cooks to provide downloads for users - Touch HD Windows Mobile ROM Development

I have had communication with several other cooks who also thought this poll would be a good idea. The fact is Rapidshare is by far the most popular used service amongst cooks. However I and many others receive many request for other mirrors due to problems.
So the question is which service is the best for the users, and the cooks. Many of us can only comment on what we have and it is too costly to try many different ones so hopefully this Poll will provide some information.
Keep in mind for cook most all of us have to have a paid account to get around the limitations of the free services.
From a cook myself I have not had any issues with Rapidshare. But I also have a paid account.

Rapidshare is probli best and easiest to upload on, but I personally am blocked out of it through a university VPN
Is there a way of uploading them directly to this website (html), may be alot of bandwith, but maybe each cook could have one file limit each

I prefer Rapishare because I have not any issues with Rapidshare and also have a paid account.Madiafire its very slow in my lokation..

Sorry but this website is not a option I'm afraid.

Another one I forgot to add to the list is FileDropper

Bob,
I am not sure whether you know ROM hosting service that TehPenguin is offering for free of charge. http://vidmes.com/xda/Touch HD/ROMs/
It was widely used in the HTC Universal forum and it is very good. Maybe it is worth for you to have look.

I sent him a PM but I have not heard back. I don't know how to upload to his site.

Have you tried http://dl.free.fr/ ?
It's totally free, you can set a password, and the file is online until nobody has downloaded it for 30 days.
Ok, it's french, but not very difficult to use, and actually, I don't know if you need to use free.fr as you Internet provider in order to upload files...
Or another one, that is free but I don't know it: http://www.filedropper.com/

It is not just about free for me but what the limitations are for users. Some sites limit your downloads per area, some company' block some sites, some only let you download 10 times for users. Thanks and I will check it out.

I've checked for dl.free.fr and it appears there is a bandwidth limitation for users not using Free as there Internet provider, so it's perhaps not the best.
But Filedropper seems quite good, doesn't it?

My own personal preference is any of them except Rapidshare. Only reason is that my work blocks this site

i voted for megaupload
everything i ever downloaded worked with no issue and the speed is at least acceptable

Would it be an option to put a torrent on this site and let sharing do the rest? That's what p2p networks are for right? ;-)

I prefere htcpedia or celogeek
It's not filtred by my proxy.

Wah... Wah... Wah... I want files hosted where I prefer.

i don't understand why people keep using rapidshare. there is nothing rapid about it. its crap. mediafire has been recommended by several computer magazines. there is no waiting involved. just download the file...
It'll be interesting to hear the replies for this... I've never really given much thought to this, but I understand what you're saying.

Totally agree.
Rapidshare is ANYTHING but rapid (apart from rapidly removing cash from your credit card!)....especially in the ME.
Files can usually be attached to the forum cant they??? OR are we in that grey area again....Smiles...
Im a total newb here but I love MediaFire compared to Rapidshare. It has been a pain waiting for all the wait times.
mediafire is so much better than rapidshare. like i said. no waiting, no paying, no nothing. and it is so simple. max upload is 100mb i think. plenty in my opinion...
and what about XDA FTP?
Why we are not using also XDA FTP server? limited disk space? limited donw/up data limit? rapidshare and megaupload completely suck!
mediafire looks great )
i agree i hate waitin nad havin to pay for that...but thanks to rapidhacker though, i still agree we shouldnt have to wait
I would prefer mediafire too, but if someone's gonna take the time to upload a file for everyone, then I'm not gonna complain.
With that said, do you have DSL? If so, just turn your modem off for about 2-3 minutes and start it back up and you'll be able to download what you wanted without having to wait an hour or however long rapidshare likes to make us wait!
Eric
i believe that would depend on how ones isp's dhcp rules are if one keep the same ip it would not work

Or just pay for an account and have access, then you are not limited.
Guys, if there is a huge file most of you REALLY want to be hosted, I can offer up to 100 Mbytes of Webspace on my (paid-for) database back-end. Just let me know what files you want me to host and I'll mirror them.
something is wrong with your ISP then because I download daily from rapidshare at around 850k/sec
Depends on site you select
The best for me are GlobalCrossing and Level3, other are slow like fart
Ehm, still I haven't had a proper look at rapidshare really, but I guess one should pay in order to download stuff from it.
It is something I'd like to avoid, as many other users do I think.
So, any other (free) solution would be welcomed....
I really don't care about speed as my provider filters connections in order (they say) to limit peer-to-peer... the truth is: they buy bandwidth from another company, so they promise ther users 4 MBits but if everyone used 4Mbits everything would crash.
Anyway, as attachments aren't usually that big, I'd be happy with 30Kbps download speed....

Why pay to remove limitations when places like Mediafire have no limitations?
Don't care rapid share is blindingly fast on my 24Mb connection
sendspace/filefront/filden is free with no wait time (i use fileden, its a direct link, none of this CAPTCHA crap)

imho if one has nothing to complain about the topic subject (s)he should simply say nothing

I do all my stuff from my titan and can never get m .f .to work .I rarely have access to my pc and at least rapid works .I would be willing to use another site if it worked for my titan . for me all the great work here is wasted if I can't use it .my 2¢

For the Kaiser guys!

This is a duplicate post from the main forum... Thought I would post it here to let all my Kaiser developers know about it too:
I have been "leeching" from XDA for a while now and I want to give something back to XDA.
I have a webhosting business. I am not really doing anything with it at this time. I was thinking about opening it up for XDA members for file hosting.
I HATE RapidShare and other "free" sites like it... I wouldnt do anything more than some banner ads on the site, maybe some GoogleAdSense... Nothing intrusive... I promise...
Would anyone use this COMPLETELY FREE SERVICE?
Im setting it up now, 100MB for RAR and ZIP, 50MB for CABS

Great idea mate, That would be really very helpful for all. I suggest you to contact ROM developers as they are the trendsetters.

None... Its on a VBulletin just like these forums... I am going to make sure the links are "pretty" and you dont have to be registered to download them...
You will still need to be registered to POST them as attachments... if I had some kind of ftp/file sharing thing like 4shared I might use it, but I dont... so vbul it is!
Thumbs up!
great idea!!
Awesome idea. Most file sharing sites are blocked from my work and sometimes I see these cool apps and ROMs and I can't get them until I get home.
Great job.

online storage

not sure if this is too offtopic but i was wondering and i havent looked too much into but i do use it on occasion, is why nobody uses skydrive fot there online rom and theme hosting. to the best of my knowledge microsoft has pretty much or will give anyone who is or does sign up with windows live 25 free gigs of online storage and "no popups" i dont know just thought id throw that out. peace, Veritasaequita
How fast is the server in terms of dl and upload speeds?
Many people use MegaUpload and RapidShare to host their ROMs/themes, those are hosted online.
I personally prefer MediaFire over others. You don't have to sign up and they don't slaughter your connection like some hosting sites. *coughRapidSharecough*

[APP] WP7 3mktPlace v0.4

Hello,
I would like to share a windows app, kind of a parallel market for desktop that allows you to download almost any WP7 application, and convert it automatically into .XAP file.
But I don't know if it is ok with moderation so please mods let me know about it before I upload the .zip file.
Thanks.
sounds like a great way to finally be able to install the free netflix app, even if it is not listed in your marketplace...

This software lets you download any app from the market, including paid ones. Hence it is not allowed on xda.

Nope, this is a free app, but as said above, it can download any app, free or not, and convert it into .XAP.
So it can be considered as warez but it is not really one actually. Since it's able to grab free apps in .XAP file system, I though it was an interesting tool for finding rare .XAP apps...
But that is why I waited before posting any link, as the status of this app is rather vague, like in the grey area...
I think it's a free app. I've tried and works well.
Unfortunately, it seems it works for free and paid apps (honestly, haven't tried it, but read that it is possible). It is a pitty, because it won't be allowed on XDA and it is a great way to avoid all the trouble to get a live ID.
Well couldn't somebody mod it to only access the free ones?
There is also another software that does the same as this, both are by different devs. Would be great if we had a XDA dev work on it and release it with better/more stable functions.

That would be a great step for HD2 users.
not hard at all to activate
other than the activation code from Microsoft being location based, it is not hard what so ever to have WP7 be fully fuctional. i have zero issues down loading/accessing anything from windows live, market, zune. all the info to do so is here on the forums, and a 5 min call to Microsoft customer service. There was only two specific questions they asked 1. are u in the US, 2. what is the phone Brand. having all of the software set up properly, then entering that code gives full use. when i plugged into the Zune software after it recognized it as HD7....................been testing the crap out of it since. zero problems. take your time....put all the software in the right order, call to get a code...done....
sorry if the Microsoft activation code does not work for you based on location.. that blows
please be realistic
it is considered as cracking app to me, definitely not allowed here, period. It is everywhere in the Chinese forums, where they share all kind of cracked paid apps.
Yes, there's no distinction between free and paid apps. I've download to alternative browsers, not knowing they were paid.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=908293 - it seems to do the same thing, but only displays free apps. Should be sticky here.
Either way, bored of WP7, back to Android!
tried so many games and apps
apps are fine ! but no game is working except NFS !!!

it download paid apps for free therefore not allowed to be discussed on XDA.

Actually it only downloads the free apps aswell as trials, it doesnt directly download any full apps. What it does do also is edit the trial so its full on supported titles.
Well I wouldn't consider removing the trial limitation to full legal since its then a full app. Anyway carry on. Don't say no one told ya

Line2

I am using the new Android version of Line2, the VoIP product for making calls over a Wifi connection from Toktumi. It was released yesterday. I have Attn1's Froyo 2.2 FR008 with a rooted Aria.
The Aria is not specifically supported. However, the sound is good on my end but some people I called noted static.
Once the program is started, it runs in the background and you cannot "exit" the application short of force closing it. (The "menu" button which in many apps points to an "exit" function, does not provide one). Not a big deal.
If you have WiFI access and need to cut back on your phone minutes, it might be worth trying for about $10 a month.
Can you please upload the apk!

The Line2 app is available in the Android Market: search for "Line2" or available to download here: http://www.line2.com/download_android.html
Thanks!
Thanks for starting this thread! I'm the developer of the Line2 for Android and would love to hear feedback good or bad.
As for which phones are supported, we were very conservative with our list to include phones we've tested heavily. We have other phones that work well but haven't received the amount of testing we like.
One particular reason we're hesitant to just certify all phones is that we have found some hardware related issues on some devices such as the Evo.

I got a Pixel Qi 3G Adam tablet from Notion Ink a few weeks back and am unable to get Line2 to work over the 3G connection. It appears that 3G VoIP options are disabled by default and the Dialing tab appears to be missing. Wi-Fi calling works, and I can sign into my account over 3G, but I can not make or receive 3G calls. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I am using a G2 on T-Mobile and have experienced the exact same issue... no 3G/Cellular calling. I too am missing the Dialing tab in the settings so there is no way to tell Line2 to make or receive call. I have been around and around with Customer care but to no avail.
