Cdma Hero Rom Flashing plz Help - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hate to ask questions that in most case i would consider nubish...
but i am trying to upload a custom rom to my phone and every time i reboot and hold down the menu and the power button i get only an option to clear phone (which i have tried to no avail) now i just need to know what i am doing wrong i have rooted my phone and when i hold the home keys and the power keys on my sprint hero (updated to newst stock rom *just trying to be thurow with my info*) it does one of two things 1.) it could boot up into the screen with gree text white background and little androids on scateboards with my only option being clear memory or exit menu key does nothing 2.) sometimes it boots up and gives me a triang with a exlamation point in it with a image of a phone laying down.
Please help me my email is [email protected] or call or text me at 330-321-4294 any help would greatly apreciated call or text any time of day i will be gracious for the help

did you install recovery 1.2.3 or 1.5 after rooting and before flashing the rom?
recovery is what allows you to install updates, backup, restore, etc.

im a dumb noob
never did i think i would call myself a noob but you have showed my how nubish i really am i am now going to go search for this recovery 1.5 but is there a link you can give me too it and is there a rep up button that i can give you points for this?

no worries....
1.5: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=596879

I would use v1.5.2 found in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561124
There were some reports of problems with 1.5.1.
After you flash it (read the instructions in the above thread) you will see a black screen with green text. Congratulations, you are in "recovery" mode! Navigate and select through the menu with the trackball.
One of the first things you should do is make a backup using Nandroid. After that you can flash your custom ROM by selecting the .zip while in recovery mode.
Actually, all of this is in this thread (which is now stickied):

Have fun!

[Q] WOW! Need Help... Boot Animation is stuck

ok so i did the one click root method tonight... so after i flashed clockwork and downloaded the cyanogen mod rc1 it told me to do a back up and reboot phone.. it rebooted and it goes into the boot animation screen.. it does the regular X color of the nexus then turns to the blue x .. after a few blue x's it stops then acts like it resets and goes back to the regular color, then back to the blue one..
it repeats itself over and over again.. been doin it for quite some time now.. like over three hours.. i pulled the battery and tried again, same thing..
im really really concerned about my phone now..
is there anything i can do??
please help me.. thanks
did you do the backup? Did you wipe prior to install? Did you use Rom Manager by any chance?
yes i did a back up.. and yes i used ROM manager... BUT i just now found out where the back up was.. i got thru! im going to try another recovery image and a diff rom..
ok, Amon_Ra is the one I prefer, I used it to flash CM6 RC2 only 4 hours ago.
-Cheers, good luck
ok thank you very much! is that image in rom manager?
can you also tell me what you did please... step by step..? i never done this b4 lol
sure, its very fresh (im probably only 24 hours ahead of you since my first root)
This should work, If anyone would like to double check this please feel free, I would hate to give someone bad info to go on.
so after clockwork gave me some issue to say the least i decided to go with Amon_Ra.
1)Shutdown
2)press power button and trackball at the same time
3)use vol-up and vol-down select "bootloader" using power button to select
4)then select "Recovery"
5)should now say clockwork on the bottom(trackball for movement and select in this menu) If it does not say clockwork or you see a exclamation mark in a triangle, you gave bigger problems then i can help you with
6)select wipe
7)select data, cache, and dalvik-cache to wipe So long as you only select those three options your sd card will remain ok and untouched
8)once done go back to main clockwork menu
9)select backup/resotore (or something similar) and hit restore nandroid(or similar)
10) if it asks you to pick which backup select the right one (you should only have one)
11)once done (and you get no errors) go back to clockwork menu and hit reboot, it should boot into your previous rom before you tried CM.
While here back in the working rom, make sure the end of your baseband version ends with "4.06.00.12_7" (menu > settings >about phone)
First go to the bottom of rom manager and hit "Flash Alernate Recovery" It should say RA Recovery
Once its done hit it again just to make sure it flashed (it should immediatly give you a comfirmation)
Then download CM6 RC2 (rom manager wont let you since it doesnt have clockwork anymore) go here and download the latest verions of CM and the google addon. Just download them to the sdcard.
Then reboot the phone in recovery:
1)Shutdown
2)press power button and trackball at the same time
3)use vol-up and vol-down select "bootloader" using power button to select
4)then select "Recovery"
5)should then say Amon_Ra on the bottom (if it does not or instead goes to exclimation triangle, boot back into regular and try flashing Amon_Ra again) (within this menu the trackball is now used to select and move through the menu)
6)since your current version is not working we wont backup, but normally you will select backup and do a nandroid backup
7) Instead of backing up go to wipe
8) wipe the data, cache, and dalvik cache. So long as you only select those three options your sd card will remain ok and untouched
9)go back (should be vol-down, should say at the top)
10) go to flash from sdcard
11)select the CM6 zip first (should ask for confirmation)
12)once done and no errors flash the google apps zip (also ask for confirmation)
13)once done go back to Amon_Ra main menu, and click reboot now
14)Enjoy CM
omg thanks!... question, do i download the radio as well?

That's why you need to see if your baseband number ended with "4.06.00.12_7" , if your baseband does not end with that number, then you will have to update your radio, something i have not done yet, and because of this I ask that if your baseband does not end with that number that you do not follow the rest of the steps. The steps leading up to you checking the baseband will reflash you back to how you were before trying to flash CM so you will have a working phone. However if your baseband is that number, ("4.06.00.12_7" ) then you will not have to do anything to the radio and you can continue the steps ignoring the radio altogether.
Also would any person more knowledgeable then I like to check my previous post to make sure it looks ok before this person does anything?
lol i did it, dont worry... it worked thanks man

request boot animation

hello,
I try to make a boot screen from the attachment below and i used a howto.
But that does not succeed. Can sombody help me with this boot screen.
Can somebody make it so that I can boot into recovery
png files and gif files are there as attachments
Thanks for helping my,
mattijsier
ps: i have froyo 2.2(fusion rom6.1.1) and a htc hero
I love the POST-inspired one, looking forward to this being finished. Wish I could help you!
I am at school atm but I can make it for you and then explain how. But you will have to clarify what you mean boot into recovery. If you flash a custom rom you have generally or always installed a recovery menu. This can be accessed by pressing "Home + End Call(boot) button" before the phone starts.
Made it start but for some odd reason it misses the post. Got a lesson now so will try later.

Your new animation have to be almost (but not quite entirely unlike) the same filesize as the old one <- this is important for the system to recognize the splash screen.

[Q] Newbie Question

Hi All
sorry if this is a stupid question
but i've just bought a nexus one from a friend which has a custom rom (MoDaCo Rom R22)
i take it is rooted, but my question is i would like to put it back to standard or another good rom u would recommend
so which rom do i get and how do i install it
thx for your time
If you want to switch to a new custom ROM:
First doublecheck that you're really rooted, check your apps and see if you have one called Superuser. If so, you are.
Second, see what custom recovery you're using. Turn off your phone. Once it's off, press the Volume Down button and then press the power button simultaneously. A white screen will show up, hit down a few times and let it run a quick little check and then select Recovery and hit your power button.
You should see either ClockworkMod Recovery or Amon_Ra. Next turn your phone on and hit the menu button and go to settings. Then scroll down to About Phone and then look at Baseband Version.
If the last numbers are 4.06.00.12_7 then go to
Code:
wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_Nexus_One#Flashing_CyanogenMod
and work your way down for the recovery version that you have on your phone, otherwise start at
Code:
wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_Nexus_One#Flashing_Radio
. This will install CyanogenMod 6.0, which is generally considered one of the better stable mods and a great first mod for someone who doesn't know a whole lot about custom ROMs.
If you want to completely reset your phone to its initial factory settings you can use a simple process suggested to me last night:
Emul8or said:
You can try the passimg method-
1. [download]
Code:
android.modaco.com/content/google-nexus-one-nexusone-modaco-com/300414/10-may-stock-roms-erd79-epf21b-images-zip-online-kitchen-optional-root-insecure-himem/
a stock image and rename it PASSIMG.zip
2. Place the file on the root of your sd
3. Power off your phone, then turn it on by holding VolDown and pressing Power
*It will start up in HBOOT mode and will prompt you to flash the PASSIMG.zip update

Note: I'm too much of a noobcake to post URLs, so hopefully someone can repost it or edit this to make the links easier.
I suggest just opening Nexus One Wiki (the topmost thread with the same name links to it), reading, and executing either the "Flashing custom ROMs" guide or "Unroot/Restore your Nexus" guide.
About custom ROMs - I suggest looking in Developer section, checking out a few, and settling on something you like.
And I don't suggest using ROM Manager.
thx for the replies i'll have a look
Why not ROM Manager? It would allow you to flash to a stock prerooted Froyo firmware. From there you can decide what you want to do next.
That being said, if you want to do anything more advanced, I suggest you become comfortable with navigating the custom recovery yourself, nandroid backups, adb, and all that jazz. Also you will want to verify if the bootloader is unlocked, or if the previous owner used a root exploit that didn't require unlocking.

CWM doesnt do anything, "back button disabled", help please.

i had a custom froyo 2.2 rom (cant remember the name) and decided today to install gingerbread 2.3.
i went for cyanogen rom, downloaded the most recent one and copied it to the SD card.
then i went to recovery mode (an old CWM version that was installed the time i installed froyo). wipe everything, install zip from SD card and everything went good.
2.3 is installed and working, but cyanogen doesnt include google apps so i had to download an extra .zip that includes google apps (market, maps, etc). so i rebooted into CWM (now a new version that was installed with the rom v4.0.0.5) but now it doesnt work!
any option i choose from the CWM menu just doesnt do anything and goes back to the menu. if i scrool down the last option (to return to the first option) he writes "back menu button disabled" and if i go again it writes "back menu button enabled" but still doesnt do anything.
i search the forum and the web and found nothing, please help me because im getting scared that the phone might be broken..
thanks in advance.

Use the vol + and vol - buttons to move the menu selection cursor. You can cycle through the entire menu wrapping 3 times or you can move backwards from the top choice to the bottom choice then forwards to the top choice again, etc. the source code waits for this "wrapping" to occur 3 times before it enables the back option again.

Thanks a ton . The issue was solved by selecting with the power button for some reason. I'd been trying that earlier but pressing it alongwith the menu button so nothing had happened. Anyways, thanks again for your help and I hope this helps some future noob!

+1. What's the rationale for it?
I think it was originally to work around some broken hardware on an old phone. There may be comments in the source code, but i haven't looked in a long time.
EDIT: /bootable/recovery/recovery.c says
// Some users with dead enter keys need a way to turn on power to select.
// Jiggering across the wrapping menu is one "secret" way to enable it.
// We can't rely on /cache or /sdcard since they may not be available.

And you have to "wrap" 3 times to get the back button to be enabled/disabled.

i also had the same problem in my micromax p275 tab but no vol+ or vol- button how can i go through menu im using cwm recovery thanks guys and im using cwm recovery ok

LG Marquee has CWM.

Okay guys, I thought what the hell, I'll try the LGE Black option in ROM manager and see what happens.
IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Use the volume keys to move and the search button to select.
The first boot into it, you will get all kinds of errors saying it can't mount certain files.
Go to "Mounts and Storage" and select "mount /cache". The errors will go away.
Everything seems to work as it should.
A quirk that I found was that until you "Wipe cache partition" you will be stuck in recovery and you cannot get out. Once done, "Reboot System Now" and everything works great.
One last thing, I cannot figure out how to key combo into recovery. I have to use ROM manager to access it.
NOTE:CWM messes up turning off the phone. Pressing the power button and selecting OK to turn off will now reset the phone and then boot it back up. Now only way to power off phone (besides pulling battery) is to use ROM Manager to boot into recovery, wipe the cache, then select power off.
good news dude
no key combo on Black, I think it's the same on Marquee

This seems weird; does CWM allow you to make a backup?
Have you tried loading a backup to see how it works?

I have tried and you do not get a complete backup. You do get the boot and recovery img files but not much else.
I have tried (without luck) via twitter to contact Koushik Dutta, the man responsible for CWM. We really need his assistance for this to move forward.
well, I know its possible to use the Android Terminal Emulator to flash a custom recovery image from your sd card;
thedroiddemos.com/2010/07/23/how-to-flash-a-custom-recovery-on-android-tutorial
I wonder if it can be used to generate an image of your phones current state to create your own back up and file it on your sd card.
Haven't tried to do any type of restore yet. I have managed to get the boot and recovery IMG files and used adb to get a copy of the system files.
(The LG-Black Dev's are using these files to develop their Gingerbread version.)
I might try to figure out how to do this from the link you gave. If I do, I will post what I find out.
Honestly though, after guinea pigging the root and CWM without total bricking the phone, I'm afraid of pushing my luck too far.
It would be nice if some more people would jump in and help with some of this but I guess the phone is to new to have very many users. Seems like I see the same few names on the three Marquee forums I know of.
I know what you mean. I'm starting to think you are the only one out there with a rooted Marquee.
Hang in there... I think once all the chaos from the iphone settles down, more people will have the Marquee. Most stores in my area are saying they don't even have it. They don't even have them on display.

any response from koush?
Also, I was wondering...
I often download files from peers in forums instead of going strait to the source. I saw that you got CWM from the android marketplace via Rom Manager...
Do you have the premium version?

also, I was reading at the link above and noticed you can email koush directly for help with CWM via [email protected]
Have you tried this?
Also, according to this;

hey guys, I have done a backup of my stock rom from cwm, I think it worked, but I have no reason to flash it back yet, I'm as geeked as everyone else for roms on this thing, but I still miss my captivate, firefly was awesome
well then, THAT's interesting. So everything appears to be working in CWM for you? Just using the OPBlack version?
Rmcc seemed to imply it would work here:

https://twitter.com/#!/CM_arcee/status/151712659794964481
But I honestly haven't had enough time to delve into this much. I had the Marquee for about 2 weeks or so, but had to temporarily switch for work-related reasons. Will probably switch back to it as my personal phone, so I would love to see / hear some progress on this.
Didn't work quit as well for me... When I tried to mount the cache I got an error. The only way I could get out of the recovery screen was to 'Wipe Cache Partition'
By the way THANK YOU for posting that. I could not figure out how to get out of that screen. My phone is rooted and I have been waiting for people to develop... but it looks like there are not many people developing on the Marquee
---------- Post added at 12:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:59 AM ----------
BTW I posted a request for the Marquee on Cyanogenmod facebook page... if we all do the same we may be able to get some love.
