Seriously basic question - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just so im straight, and i know this is a stupid question, but when people are referring to doing a 'wipe' before installing a new ROM, what exactly does that mean. I've installed the fresh roms over stock, so i never had to do a wipe. Was thinking about trying to the modaco one just to see what its like, but as im reading its suggested to wipe first. Is this the same "wipe data/factory reset" option in the RA? or something different im missing.
Better to be safe and do it right rather than guess i suppose.

Yes its the "wipe data/factory" reset selection in RA. Just select that and when it completes just flash the Rom

After installing a new rom my phone freezes at the 2nd load screen

I did everything right and after I reboot when in safe mode, it loads the "tmobile G1 screen but the 2nd load screen loads forever and does not change. I waited over an hour last night and it did not finish loading.
Should be in Q&A mate.
What rom ? what version ? what does it say if you run a logcat.
Try reflashing it via the recovery console.
safe mode refers to windows and recovery mode is the one your talking about. You should at least give other info like your SPL,radio,ROM,recovery,etc..
The ROM is SuperD192
using latest spl and radio
is there any other roms that you recommend?

Of course:

Flash the rooted base, then flash the expansion from the above link
This is what i did in order.
1. formatted SD card
2. ran the recovery
3. rebooted in recovery mode and flashed the radio
4. rebooted again and flashed the spl.
5. rebooted and flashed the ROM

I'm not sure which radio and SPL you flashed was it these:

yes, those were the exact ones

At least you can read cause most people flash the SPL then radiod and get a nice paper weight to display.Get Amon_RA:

After updating to that wipe everything then flash Super-D.

the latest spl and radio you say.............
and how do we now you didn't do something stupid and use the wrong ones?
is it too much to post at least the version numbers?
--
but anyway,
take out the SD Card, and open it on your computer
copy all the files into a new directory call my Phones SD card
now put it back in the phone
go into recovery
somewhere in the Recovery (I'm not going to give any specifics, which is tbh only fair cos you didn't give any. )
is format/part SD Card, do it ....
swap size,,, I duno, 32mb,64mb, 96mb? up to you...
Ext2 errm 512mb is good
rest is fat32
now, put your ROM on the sd card , and flash it
...
next time Wipe Data/cache , Dalvik-cache, sd:ext before you flash the ROM
Oh and do a nandriod back up BEFORE you wipe Data/cache , Dalvik-cache, sd:ext, before you flash the ROM and might be a good idea to read up next time before you Wipe Data/cache , Dalvik-cache, sd:ext before you flash the ROM Oh and do a nandriod back up BEFORE you wipe Data/cache , Dalvik-cache, sd:ext, before you flash the ROM
so i am going to use this as a recovery instead? and just follow the same steps i did in the past?
Pm me, I'll walk you through sorting this out in simple plain english.

do you honestly expect an answer?
YOU HAVE NOT SAID WHICH RECOVERY YOU ARE USING?
sorry for the caps, but come on, this is't about being new to rooting, this is being new to common sense
1/ which recovery
2/ which radio
3/ which SPL
4/ which ROM
you could cheat by posting a link to the guide you followed
if it was written on the back of a beer mat, take a pic of it
I'm sorry for being so rude, I am actually trying to help you
people will be able to answer your questions better if you give information..
I am pleased to say he is now up and running.
And to the senior members on this thread take your heads from up your arses. **** we were all new once and just waffling **** at someone loaded with jargon and expecting them to understand is a ****in joke.
I have to say I'm very disappointed to be classed as the same as you people and apologies for the language but some people need telling straight. Go get over your ****in selfs!
If ANY of you had given him a chance you would have found him to be a great guy that listened to instructions and had a fairly good understanding for someone so new.
You so called 'Senior Members' disgust me. *Le Sigh*

[Q] paragon rc4.0

I have installed many roms with out any problems but after trying to flash this rom i am stuck at this screen. Could someone help please.
New file sytem config detected. convert?
-yes
-yes with factory reset after backup
-yes with factory reset without backup
-no enter recovery mode
-no remove the new config
-++++++go back+++++
what one do i select please.
Yes........ ...
Yes dont answer the question, but i figured it out anyway. i chose --yes with factory reset after backup. Unless you mean i should have selected just the first yes. Thank you for your reply if that is what you meant. I also did not hear the voodo sounds if it has it like other roms.

The answer was and is the top option YES
you will find allot of people willing to help you here, but your question was one that needed an answer NOW. Sorry I left my bat phone off the ringer.
On a side note paragon its a great rom.
Ty again for your help. so did i do wrong for selecting the one i selected? and yes so far it is great. Unless i installed wrong
Which one did you select? Do you have an app in your app draw called voltage control?
yes sir i do have that app. But i did not select yes like you suggested. I selected
-yes with factory reset after backup
But i did not hear any of the voodoo voices like i did with cognition unless this is different.
I oppologize for the ignorance but only flashed the perception roms and cognition roms.
Different lag fix. No voices. You should be fine. The kernel uses ulk lag fix. Options are available in recovery. Base settings are stock clocking, but you can over clock your device with this kernel. Unless you are a big gamer I would leave stock
Was worried there for a minute or so. In your honest opinion should i reflash and just choose the ---yes--- as you suggested. i love all these roms and just want the best for my phone. im at almost an hour now with no battery drain. I will never overclock my phone though, i have never been into overclocking. To reflash is no prob to intall with the option you suggested.
You may want to reflash. No stability concern but any app that was not saved in system would of been wiped in reset. So you may be missing somethings the dev included.
If you want you can change the kernel to a non oc one. It is very easy
Ok i will reflash it. Thank you for all your time with me. Very nice to be here and have help the way you have helped me. Tc and have a wonderful evening.

Question about ODIN 1.81

Okay so on ODIN 1.81 which i use to flash back to stock and keep my 3 button recovery intact, i donot see a masterclear button. Yet it seems like people keep saying that you can masterclear with a non 1-click ODIN. is this true? maybe its just labeled differently. When it comes to odin i dont go poking around as im afraid something could happen and id have no idea what i just did lol.
There is no master clear in regular odin.
There is a secret code you can input into keypad once the phone is booted up. Its not needed to switch roms though
Sent from my atrix
All master clear does is wipe the /sdcard partition. That can be done in recovery with wipe data/factory reset, same thing. Not really needed.
Wouldn't reformatting the internal sd do the same thing?
Sent from a place my wife doesn't know about (yet)

[Q] Install Android only

Hello All;
I have decided to try and male my HP touch pad an Android only touch pad.
I need help though as i am a novice at best.
I am looking for help on the files i will need. Want to install CM 10 recent and CWM.
Do i need a boot loader or will that be in the ROM?
And what other files will i need?
i am assuming i need a ROM, Recovery, and GAPPS. Other than that i am not sure.
Found someone on the WebOS Nation who is willing to help so i dont want to go into this like and idiot, i want to have my ducks in a row.
Any help will be appreciated
thanks
This is a good guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147284. As for Android-only, I don't recommend it. WebOS has gotten me out of Android trouble before.

Good point, Hey let me ask you something.
I like flashing ROMs but I always end up with a mess. Moboot, i dont think updates as grub2 does. So, i have thought the best way to switch ROMs would be treating the ROM as a first install, does that make sense and do you agree?
Or do you know a method to change ROMs that works well for you?

Android doesn't update the way Linux does, it only updates apps; the bootloader isn't going to update neatly from a package manager. At the same time, updating the TP's bootloader (moboot) is usually unnecessary. On the other hand I usually like to keep my recovery (TWRP/CWM) up to date. When I switch ROMs I just wipe and flash from recovery. Never had a problem.

What rules are you following? Full wipe? Leaving extra stuff in moboot is normal. You can delete the extras if they really bother you.

You should wipe system as well and if the extra uimage is still there you can delete it using a file manager after booting

As far as I know, most ROM install scripts automatically wipe system for you. Can't hurt to try, though.
Thankfully I have this zip again thanks to sstar posting it the other day. This zip will wipe your ulmage clean. Just flash it as you would a rom, than flash rom and gapps after.

[Q] Broadband Signal loss

It all started a month ago. I wake up and my phone has yellow letters and stuff in front of my screen and zero signal. I googled and found out about factory mode and such(root disable etc) and i managed to get it off my screen but the no service problem persisted. So again I learned through your great forums how to flash stuff how to unbrick etc. I managed to get a clean install with official samsung firmware after a lot of tries which means i installed a lot of extra stuff i dont know. So now I have signal but is not as strong as it used to be. In some occasions where eveyone has 4 bars i have 2. Or in closed places like a coffee shop where everyone has 2 bars i either have zero or no service and when someone calls me says that my phone is turned off. I noticed that the kernel hasnt changed, i might have installed a kernel that doesnt match my Model. I have a GT-I8190N android version is 4.1.2 broadband modem is I8190NXXANK1 and numder of construction is JZO54K.I8190NXXANK1. I always thought that the firmware brought its own kernel but i rly dont know. Should i flash the kernel I8190NXXANK1 you have on your site? With which app should i do it? Do i have to root again and get twrp just to flash that file? Isnt there any way to flash the kernel without rooting and without twrp like with odin for instance in download mode? Thanks in advance. Forgot to mention that when i try to flash the kernel with factory phone recovery its says signature verification failed.
Try install it through Odin, just like flashing firmware, but only wipe cache and dalvik cache before and after flashing. Ignore the system, data and internal/SD card partition(don't wipe them).
You need to find kernel .tar file,(flashable thru Odin, as .zip file can't be flashed by Odin).
You might want to look on the hardware side too.
Good luck

Thank you for your reply. I did install twrp because i couldnt wait and i installed the kernel through that. Still no changes. I replaced the antenna(im a hardware expert, software is what is killing me) with a brand new from the same model. Still 2 bars. Remember I have signal its just not strong enough as it used to be. So i think i might have flashed some junk while i was trying to learn how to flash like some weeks ago. Now i really dont know how to "wipe cache and dalvik cache before and after flashing. Ignore the system, data and internal/SD card partition(don't wipe them)." Is it by opening the recovery and choose "wipe data etc".Thank you for being interested in my problem. All I want is to have the signal back. Isnt there a way to FLUSH(delete/wipe) like everything. Every corruption or bad script and just bring it to factory. If we cant do that then can I install a custom rom that will overwrite the corrupted stuff and ill have full signal? If u know any good custom rom i would gladly flash it. May god( which i dont believe in ) take years from life span and give it to u if u help me fix this!

There a wipe button in TWRP, tap it, find advance wipe, chose cache and dalvik only, swipe, and its done.
If you suspecting an app is the reason, just uninstall the app, but if its a script, you need to check with the dev how to deactivate/kill/delete it.
But as I know, if you do a factory reset and wipe data partition, your phone will be just like a new phone just come out from factory, only basic firmware is present( its 'factory reset' right )
There is a lot of custom ROM in the forum, need a little reading to know if its got what you want.
And carefull bout posting something other than android or device, as it is stated in the forum rule. Better pray no mods or op see this.
