Cradle / Dock for CDMA Hero - Hero CDMA Accessories

Hey everyone,
I've had my Sprint Hero for about 2 months now and am loving it - I haven't even felt the need to root it yet.
But having bought Mobitobi's awesome sleep/alarm apps from the Market, I'm now searching for a good cradle for my Hero to sit on my nightstand and act as my alarm clock.
I've only found a couple options out there. The best looking one (includes 3.5 stereo out) is here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290372582892, but I received it yesterday and realized after many angry emails back and forth to the seller that this dock is actually not specialized for a Hero, but is actually a TP2 dock that the seller claims "some buyers say it works with their Hero too so that's why I listed it that way." Bummer, I know. Why anyone would talk about how awesome this dock is when the phone footprint slot is so huge compared to your phone and is so obviously not stable is beyond me.
The other option that's widely available is this: http://www.wirelessground.com/sherocradle2nd.html?productid=sherocradle2nd&channelid=FROOG, but after this first debacle I'm hesitant to buy.
Have any of you gotten a cradle/dock for your CDMA Hero, and if so, which one, where did you get it, and how well does it work for you? I'm not even interested in a second battery charger, or 3.5 stereo out, but I need something that will keep my phone stable enough to be able to withstand forceful touches of the snooze button on my screen without toppling over!

Nice! I've been searching for this too, but I need a 3.5 mm jack as well. This looks like it fits the bill, and even matches my car stereo (where this will be going).
Up to this point I've been using a dock made for my old htc touch that I hacked by moving the usb jack to the center and flipping it 180 deg.

Thats a great price and seems to have free shipping.

I would like to find one that is horizontal, esp for apps like slacker/pandora and desktop clocks etc, the vertical ones are nice... but not exactly what I'm looking for

deos it fit with the Siedio 3500MHa battery backing?

It's very pretty and a nice price, but the only thing holding it upright is the miniusb connector. That's just not secure enough for me personally. Has anyone else used something different?

I notice they have it in black too, when I followed the link above it takes you to the white for some reason...
Anyone have any pictures of the phone in the doc? Just curious about the fit.

I have the black one on my nightstand at home, if I remember I'll take a pic tonight with it mounted. I was gonna order one online, but found it at BestBuy when I was buying my new bluetooth. I think it was $12

I will re-ask johnsongrantr's question. Are there any horizontal cradles? I currently use my wallet to prop the phone up horizontally at work It actually works well and makes it easier to use things like youtube.

EDIT: Nevermind. It was the GSM version.

that last one says not compatible with Sprint Hero

Since I have yet to find a good cradle, here is what I use in the interim. Albeit it does not provide charging capabilities, or the fact that I have to flip the phone upside down or lay it side ways to charge it, it gets the job done while at work lol

http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/17311-lol-hero-stand.html

do any cradles allow the use of a case? I have the snap case from the sprint store and wanted a cradle.

I went the Michael's, the craft store and picked up some black modeling clay that hardens in the oven.
I then molded a bunch of the clay together into a horizontal stand, adding a square hole on one side for the charging cable.
Heat fired it in the oven, inserted the cable and added a little hot glue, and viola! I've got my horizontal night stand for my clock applications. Total cost of about $9 I believe in clay.
I've still got to sand it, but because it works and I don't really care if it's smooth, I'm not going to get to sanding anytime soon.
Just an idea. This way, you can make it look however you want.

I am wondering if this one would work:
http://www.thepocketsolution.com/PSI-43943/HTC+Kaiser+Horizontal+Powered+USB+Cradle.html
It has a very similar mini-usb port.

Can't post URLs because I'm new but Goto BoxWave.com... 'Sprint Hero' down the right hand side, Cradle's & Mounts..
$53.00 for the one with the spare battery charging slot...
I'm considering it.

Car Dock

I really hope they make a good car dock for the nexus s. My nexus one car dock was amazing!
I love having the N1 car dock, but the lack of audio output on that thing really sucks. Several times a day I get to dock my phone *and* plug in an audio cable. I could use BT stereo, but the quality is bad. (And since N1 lacks a dock connector, even if the car dock had stereo output, it would use BT.)
That said, doesn't the NS have a real dock connector on it?
I'm keeping my N1 and upgraded my wife's G1 to the NS. The availability of a car dock is the only consideration in whether I upgrade my own phone or not.

No dock connector. The only charge point is through the micro USB port.

If you're with tmobile they sale an universal car MOD EDIT that charges your phone. An extra step yes but lets be real, its worth out to do video calling on the road. that's the only reason I want one.

What universal car docks are you using for your NS now?
They could easily use NFC to launch the dock app, and it would be possible to make an inductive charging back like they had on the palm pre.
No dock port so I have to settle with something more generic. I use this Arkon dock currently in my car. It's the most compact looking one I can find.
I've ordered a Vlingo that will attach to the vent, just until I can get a Brodit...
I could really do with a decent univerals dock though, as I change phones every 3 months

That looks much better than the one I'm using right now. For $12 I'm going to give it a shot.
Eh, I wouldn't recommend that Arkon dock. It's a tight fit for the phone. I bought one when I had the Vibrant and I didn't like how tight of a fit it was. If I was ever in a hurry, I'd be afraid that I would break that dock. It's great for the iPhone because the size is smaller, but for the 4" phones, I would not recommend (especially when you're using a case). But that's just from my experience.
I'm currently using this universal dock. It might not fit your needs since it uses one of those "patented" sticky technologies.

Got a free $20 rewards certificate from Best Buy so I used it on that dock. It's actually a very good dock. I haven't used it with any cases though, so that might be a 50/50 thing. You can look up "bracketron" on youtube to see a clip of it. It's worth the $5 I paid for, perhaps not $24 though.

I think you might be thinking of the original iphone 4 version. They came out with the universal one later, which is specifically made for larger phones.

Besides the custom one for vibrant, it's the best looking universal holder I've ever had. I have the another Arkon universal holder that squeeze from the sides, which works well but a bit large and ugly IMO. This has only 4 little legs that can be seen from the front. The legs are angled in, so they hold the phone really well. Due to the position of the legs being on top/bottom, I wouldn't recommend use it side way. It holds the phone vertically perfectly well. On the topic of size, unlike the original iphone 4 version of the same dock, its body at the lower part can be extended to accommodate larger phone. As for the back of the holder, it's the same as the other universal one I own, one hinge at the suction cup and one ball joint at the holder, both adjustable. I'd still get this one if given a chance to go back in time. Everything said is my own personal opinion of course.

Awesome, thank you for the write-up. One more question, in portrait mode, is the microUSB port obscured? I want to make sure the port isn't blocked for a car charger.
It's unfortunate that you don't recommend using this in landscape mode, but I suppose at $12 that's something I could live with. College budget ftl. >_>

I thought that too... I don't know how well inductive charging like a power mat would work with the NFC antenna. I also don't know that you can use the NFC to launch an app... isn't it link driven? Maybe that's something you could do with intents, I haven't given it too much thought. I think the inductive charging is the bigger issue.
Does anyone know if the NS has the magnetic switch to detect a dock?

Mutimedia Desktop Dock

Hello again, Nerdz.
This review will be for the all mighty docking station with built in battery charger and spare battery. I found it for $49.97 and received a 20% discount with the purchase of two other accessories. One of which was the Power and Protection Package that was aleady marked down by 25 dollars and I still received the 20% off of the damn box as well. I hope your experience will be as excellent as mine. (Father's Day weekend) I scored an awesome wife..
After a long hard day of work the last thing you wanna do is stare at your phone. So I give you the DOCKtor. It is your basic docking station with one micro USB port for the power pusher. It has a recessed area for the USB port protector and can also fit the phone with the expanded battery attached. The battery port is also equipped to fit the fat beast of a battery you may or have purchased. it has a light indicator for the charging battery. (Red, Yellow, Green) and a nice white LG logo that illuminates once the phone is docked. DESKHOME launches and automatically displays the digital time.
Let go of your phone and enjoy your much bigger monitor sitting on your desk. This works great with the HDMI cord plugged into my HDTV and the AUX from the sound system leading into the phone. It is a nice way to ignore the ROKU and tell it, "anything you can do my phone can do better!"

Very true. Just a heads up, Verizon sells it for $29.99 plus tax. Amazon? $17.00, no shipping. I love mine. I had on my phone for 20 minutes, then my twin 18 month old boys and I were playing, one little guy reached in my pocket and ran off in 2.5 seconds. Then it went across the room, and off the dining room table, bounced off the floor and out the door as my wife was coming in the house. It finally rested on my concrete patio. It was ridiculous! Phone? Perfect. Case? Barely a scratch.

Home made Stylus for Nook

I've been waiting for week to get my materials to make the home made stylus, finally the most important piece arrived. This took hours to get it to work right. It was a lot easier to get a working stylus for an iPod Touch, but after some tinkering, screaming, sweating and fails I got a pretty good working one. Check out my youtube video (sorry for the bad quality, did on a digital kodak camera very baaad):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujdsEt5zX8I

Here one I read about, don't know if it would work or not though.
I just use a chop stick. Must be hundreds of them floating around my house of different styles, materials, points. Same at work just not so many. I hang on to one for a while, lose/misplace it and it'll take me a day or two to settle on another. No muss no fuss.
Quick question, can you please tell me where you got all the materials?

The most important piece, the conductive foam, I got it from ebay. Just search conductive foam, I got a 4" x 4" still have more than half left. I'm thinking that the wire and metal casing are unnecessary, so any pen or pencil casing should do. What I have discovered so far is that the Nook stylus I made requires a large surface, like you see in the video. I wanted it to be really thin at the beginning that's why it didn't work, since the NC screen isn't as responsive as we would all want.
Anyways, the wire I used, I got it from an old coaxial cable (TV cable). Also, I got the idea from this video, which is a lot more instructive than mine...I just wanted to test it in the NC:
http://youtu.be/4YE8rGuLCtU
I think im going to try a sponge before i get conductive foam.
Very nice! Did you tried to slim the tip of conductive foam?
What is the notebook software are you using on the video?

At first I was trying to get the tip to be the thinnest possible, so it would mimic a ball point pen, but apparently the LCD in the NC need a bigger surface to respond to touches. I was able to get a thin version working on an iPod Touch 3G no problem. I'm going to try to make a new following the video that inspired me, I just need a more flexible wire to make it. Anyways, the app I used is called Handrite
I'm not sure why you'd go to the trouble when you can get a stylus for a couple of bucks on Amazon...

This experiment cost me less than 2 bucks, since I used everyday materials around the house. The only thing I had to buy was the foam, which I still have more than half left, maybe for making more or using them for other stuff like transporting cpus xD
Edit: Oh and you might find the foam in everyday electronics too, like HDD casings, tv remotes, etc. So you could get a working (proven to work on NC) stylus for free.

it works and it was really easy to make
Yesterday I had my Nook sitting open on my desk, and plugged in my phone.
The cord dragged over the screen of the Nook, and the keyboard happened to be open. Everywhere the cord touched it tapped a letter.
I tried it again with the cord plugged in to AC, but not the phone...and nothing.
Plugged the phone back in, and was able to tap keys again using the cord.
Maybe we could get a battery-operated stylus that just runs power down to the tip .
I'm thinking triple-a battery, small insulated wire down to, then acting as, the tip, and simply return up to the other end of the battery.
No clue if this would be bad for the screen or not, but as long as it's a low level of power, can't see why it would be.
We have some very creative people here who have the skills to not only make something like this happen, but regulate the flow of power through the wire from the battery.
My thought is that since the screen isn't so great for a stylus on the Nook, maybe enhancing the tapping power of the stylus would help.
For anyone who has no clue what they are doing but wants to try anyways, DO NOT use exposed wire, and in any event i'm not responsible for what happens with the use/misuse/abuse of this information.
Any thoughts on this?
ETA:
Maybe a small triple-a flashlight would make a good starting base for this project, a lot of them go real cheap anymore. Just do away with the light itself, and replace it with a wire. You get a switch already built in and all that way.

Without the phone, there is no current flow on the cable, and no magnetic field around it, and so, no capacitance distortion.

That is the question that I posed. If no one else is curious enough to find out, i'll get around to this eventually.
I have a handful of pen-light flashlights floating around here, it would be a simple matter to replace the led with a wire and find out.
When I find time to solder one in i'll let you know how it goes. My job is taking up way more time then i'd like in my life at the moment, so who knows when that'll be.

When I find time to solder one in i'll let you know how it goes. My job is taking up way more time then i'd like in my life at the moment, so who knows when that'll be.

If you replace the LED by a wire, you will get a short-circuit on the batteries, what means that even if it works as a stylus, you will get your batteries hot and discharged very quickly.
Not to say that is dangerous if the batteries get hot!
Another way would be apply the Ohm's Law and calculate a resistor to replace the LED, but I don't know if this idea (a powered stylus) would be an energy efficient circuit...

Charging Dock

Looks like AT&T is listing a charging dock for the Vivid now. Has anyone seen one in a retail outlet?
<< Can't post a URL yet, but if you google 'ATT HTC VIVID DOCK' you'll see the link >>

I saw that on their site, too. (LINK) At that price I'm going to pass and wait for the aftermarket ones to show up on eBay.

Has any one tried this dock, just wanted to see if it would work if I had a case around. The last time I got one for Desire HD it fit perfectly but then I could not use a hard/soft case.
Well call it a test.
So, although there are not any charging docks out there for the HTC Vivid, there are charging docks out there for similar phones. That being said, I'm going to purchase this...
generic looking charging dock...for the HTC Thunderbolt and see how well it works. I figure I might have to give it some support in the back, but all in all it should be a good fit, not to mention the extra battery charging slot will be useless. I'm also going to pick up one of these...
window mount charging docks...and modify it so the Vivid will fit. The Vivid is .2" wider than the thunderbolt, so I figure it'll just make for a more tight fit.
charging dock and Car Mount
I bought few months ago this car mount (Exomount) from Amazon, I use 2 of them one at home and one in the car, It can hold anything so I use it as dock station too, So far it never failed me I drive around 6 hrs a day and its always sticked to my windshield never had problem with it, plus its cheap $ 15 sorry cant post links just search at Amazon "Exomount Universal Car Mount".
Vivid and dock or on the way from AT&T. Will post pics ASAP and answer any questions. I work for AT&T so I will report back on which cases still fit in the dock, if any, that we sell.

As an update to my original post, I received the window mount that I listed and after cutting off the far left side (the part the wraps around the top corner of the phone) it fit perfectly and it initiates the car mode when I put my phone in. The only downside is that it doesn't work with my TPU case in, but I think I have a plan to fix that

In a weak moment, I coughed up the $50 for this dock. At lease it comes with another wall-to-USB plug and a micro-USB cord. It works great, but I don't use a case. It is a snug fit. I doubt that it would work with any but the thinnest cases (without modification).
do you have a dock that automatically enters dock mode?
Does anybody have a dock, Car or Desk that automatically places the phone into dock mode? As I understand it other docks use a resistor between pins 4 and 5 to place the phone into dock mode. If you have a dock that automatically places your phone into dock mode, could you measure the resistance between pins 4 and 5. I've tried the 365K ohms suggested in another thread but it does not seem to have any effect.
Thanks.
I will try and post this tomorrow.
I have a resistance substitution box so I ran through a bunch of values. What I found is from about 12K to 9.8K Car Dock Mode is selected. From 1000K to 500K Desk Mode is selected. So I selected 10K for Car Mode and build a cable that seems to work. For Desk Mode I'd like to use 680K.
Then again. looking at these numbers I'm not too sure about the Desk Mode numbers I think they may be off by an order of magnitude, so I'm going to run those tests again. Ignore the Desk Mode number for now.
Bought the dock from AT&T (online) today after I got tired looking for one. Free 2 day shipping plus the cords included so that helped feel not so bad for it. I'll let yall know if it fits with the TPU case.
I just made this makeshift stand for mine for free with little materials. It may not be the prettiest but it does the job.Im going to glue rubber to the bottom and fill it with something heavy like sand or lead tomorrow.Works great here at home!Beef Jerky can,zip ties, and paper clips.Works for now!I decided to use the can so my volume button can be placed at the top while plugged in.Holds it in landscape or portrait mode.
^ lol
I was supposed to get a free Titan but the store screwed up, I had already bought a cheap titan dock from ebay for like 9 shipped. fits the vivid great!
HEHE!
Will any of these docks work with this otterbox commuter case?Let me know if anyone tries one. Thanks!
i have an otter box defender for my vivid. will it fir on the desk/car dock while in the otter box?

Shift Stand?

Anyone know of an accessory that would help my Shift stand by itself, such as when taking a picture? Or maybe a DIY stand?
Thanks!
Never heard of one. Evo users always flaunt their stand like it's a big deal. Never seen the need for one.
The main use I see for the stand that Evo users use it (or any phone with a stand for that matter) for is for playing movies and music. (This is why I have an HP touchpad).
I actually went to breakfast with a friend today that has a Windows Phone 7 on T-Mobile with a stand and tried to start watching netflix.
I then started laughing at him because he couldn't get service and I said hold on let me turn on my "4g". Turned 4G on, got connected and then I said "Oh wait.. I cancelled netflix 3 months ago."
Moral of the story: It's useless. And there is only 1 camera on the phone and it's on the back. So I guess you could DIY a stand for the camera but honestly I just don't find it very practical or see a high demand for it.
Don't let me stop you from googling it further or creating a DIY tutorial though. Never really cared for this feature on my phone. More important than a stand to me is that lovely hardware keyboard.
i do enjoy my keyboard
thanks for the help!
If you look in amazon for tripods for cameras, there's one that comes with a clip that can hold your phone so you can user your camera with the timer mode.
It's been a long time since I got me one but it worked just right.

You could get a car dock that has a suction cup and one of those bean bag things that are used in cars for the gps. May be slightly bulky but would be a fine short stand.
I have a setup similar to this for my car and could use it as a tripod in a pinch.

If you just want it to standup like the Evo does with it's kickstand you can easily modify one of those little white plastic things that come in pizza boxes to do the trick.

Now that's some old school **** there! Haha. I don't think a cassette has been made in 15-20 years. LOL. E-bay antiques section.

Well that should give you an idea of how long I've been messing with phones . BTW still have an unopened pack of cassettes .
TEAM MiK
Mik Roms Since 3/13/11
i haven't seen one specifically for the Shift yet, and i'm surprised no one has created a case with one built in. hell, i'm just happy the MikShifted-G ROM lets me use the volume button to take a pic lol. pressing the button without looking at the screen was a pain in the ace.
I used an old cd and used a lighter to soften it up to bend it into shape I could work with, I only use it while listening to music.
Got the idea from some DIY site and it has worked fine for my needs.
I found that a PSP-1000 stand works great... unless the app has a fixed landscape and doesn't rotate. However I could just tilt the shift so the usb plug fit underneath and the stand still functioned (if at an odd angle). It doesn't hold the phone securely, so no carrying it around in the stand but it is good enough to withstand a table bump.
Dogan
Used to find them cheap, used @ gamestop
Seidio also makes a desktop charging cradle that i'm sure could be modified slightly for just about any need while keeping the charge function. Just throwing that out there.
@jsp
pretty sure you just angered a few of us older techies lol. calling our beloved cassettes antiques. I still remember stealing the black album by metallica off my father on cassette.

If I can come across that cradle for a bit less, I'm going to have to pick it up. It's the first one I've seen that they show working with a Case.
