Question about ROMs in general / Speed - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, from what i understand, these roms modify the different parts of the phone by reducing size, optimizing the apks and whatnot. Would it be benefical/possible to completely remove sense, and use a different home replacment like GDE or something along those lines. Would that provide a better experience as far as speed and smoothness goes without sense running?
Just some ponderings.

yes. if you use any of the ROMs labled AOSP they dont have sense or you can go to settings, applications, manage applications, HTC sense and clear defaults then hit the home button it will give the option to use HTC sence or Home and you can choose home. will it increase the speed? yes some. but in my opinion why did you buy a hero if you dont want sense? that is what makes this phone great. if you didnt want it you could have bought a moment.

My girlfriend went through 2 Moments before switching to a Hero.
I would say that their kernel should be labeled "late-alpha" at best.

I work in best buy mobile, i've seen the limitations if the moment many many times. The got the hero not for the sense ui, but i didnt want a keyboard, and even tho the specs might say its slower then the moment, its not the case. After time the moment starts to feel really cheap.
Either way, have you seen some of the home replacments? they are far more esthetically pleasing then the sense ui. Sure sense is great, im not knocking it, but my purpose in rooting and trying different roms is to get the fastest possible experience out of my hero.
I never though to completely remove rosie and use the default. like i said, just an idea i was kicking around, looking for input/suggestions.

please dont think I was trying to flame you I was more giving my opinion than anything. I have tried pretty much all the different roms out there. and I guess I just like sense. Probably more for the widgets than anyhting. Yes I have tried some of the home replacements. and with the various themes that are out for them they can be pretty nice. out of all of them I would say Panda home would be my favorite as it gives you the option to have up to like 11 screens which only having the 3 screens on vanila android for me just isnt enough.
as far as roms go I would have to say that my favorites would be Fresh 1.1 and if your really looking for a really fast almost bare bones rom with sense try TTG 1.6 its just as stable as fresh but does seem a bit faster.

I agree with you on that, its actually what im running right now, TTG 1.6. I love it. I have an app for switching to the default home and was fiddling around on it, but i love the 7 screens much better then 3 with the different ones, but i forget which one it was, but it lets you completely customize the entire home screen, everything from the shortcuts at the bottem to how many icons it allows. But if sense is more stable, i'll prob just stay with that.

I think regular home is lame. Sense is tight, takes up more memory, because its tight. 2.1 looks even sweeter. It's all opinion, and taste though. I tried a bunch of theme apps, and thought they sucked. I used bar control to put an icon for home on my bar, to get three extra screens for shortcuts only, and use 7 sense screens for htc's uber sick widgets.

Am I the only one who wants my color display to be in color?

Now please don't misconstrue this post.
I truly do appreciate the ROM bakers we have here, and they have put out some truly awesome stuff. Dutty and Q, I've already used both your ROMs, cause for some reason I just can't leave it alone. I've actually tried 3 of Dutty's and the 1.2 of Q's.
I've had cell phones since it was regular black numbers on a grey screen (like a digital watch), then to the green LED, then, finally to a colored LED, and then to a full color screen. I really don't want to go back 20 (or whatever) years.
Anyway, my dilema is the black design of the ROMs. I'm no ROM chef, I barely have the patience to reconfigure my device after flashing. But am I the only one who wants my color device to have a colored theme? I came from the Hermes, and tweaked the hell out of alll the black ROMs for that to get some more color into them. On this one, I'm a little more hesitant to tweak them back to color.
Is there a quick way to get the black out of the cooked ROMs? I'm back on the ATT ROM for now, and I'm hating it again (after only a day). Again, nothing but the utmost respect for the chefs with more patience and skills than me, and a big thanks to you guys again.
But, anyone else want their color device to remain in color?
On black background the white text is perfectly readable. On ultra-mega-cool-supa-dupa coloured babe-magnet screen you will see LSD effect.

I like my black WM6 theme. It's... I dunno... it's only emphasizing the potential of the device, I think. It's a psychological thing. It's if you have a ferrari you'd drive calm, respectable. Not like all those civics that scoop around like crazy kids..
Same idea here - if it'd be a cheap ass cellphone for $25, I'd have it pimped out. Since it's a $400 business machine - it has to look solid and calm.
Just my opinion.
You can pretty easily add your own backgrounds and menubar themes. You can also get skinning software to give even more possibilities. Search for the homescreen screenshot thread to see various themes and skins people use. The most popular theme is a sedate black, but there are plenty of other colors out there.

I agree. The Kaiser is about function and performance not flash. If your looking for eye candy then get an iPhone. If you want a business class multiple use device then the Kaiser is for you. I love the black themes. You can put any theme you want on these ROMs. The ROM is just the OS. Just like windows it is up to you to make look the way you like to use it. It just happen to be the most popular look for the cooks.
there are literly thousands of themes for pocket pc's bpth cooked roms and standard roms. they use the same themes and you can install them as easy as downloading them to your root directory and selecting them through your today/theme settings, have a look here http://www.pocketpcthemes.com/new.aspx for free themes

Jeez did I ever strike a chord, or what?
Why can't it have function AND form? If I wanted an Iflop, I'd have gotten one. I'd be first in line to buy those anti apple stickers, beleive me.
I'm not talking about roller coasters or flowers or hot chicks. All those things are great (some greater than others). I just want some color without having to hack like 200 items to a color to get it. Like make the black- blue, or red or whatever.
I understand I can put whatever theme I want on it. My thing was, with flashing once or twice a day, I'm tired of messing with color settings, and just wondering why people like turning the color display monochrome. Is your home computer colorless too? Do you watch movies exclusively in black and white?

I can't really talk, I guess. I don't even have wallpaper, just a plain black screen. But still, I don't look at that screen all the dang time. I guess that is what gets me... every time I look at the phone it is black and dull. The plain screen on my home computer is so I don't have added clutter.
if you want colour use SPB mobile shell its got plenty of options for colour themes, while your at it tweaks2K2.net has a color editor for your device colors thats quick and simple. no need to do any major changes and it can be changed regualarly in a matter of seconds. also SPB pocket plus have extended themes that are quite nice. or you can use a them editor to make your own themes however you want them. the choices are endless as to how you setup your Kaisers color settings

I was using SPB when I first got the Hermes... but got away from it with the advent of the HTC home plug in... it did what I wanted and took less space, also I thought it slowed the device down less. I was running the Mobile Shell, Pocket Plus, and Weather apps. Do they slow the Kaiser down too?
I'll check the tweaks2K2 thing, thanks.
they dont slow it down at all really. the newer SPB plus4 is less memory intensive and has a smaller footprint than the SPB plus v3. I use both the mobile shell and spb plus4 and pocket weather and dont experience any slow down. on my old wizard it slowed it down a bit but not that bad. the Kaiser doesnt suffer much from memory intensive apps like the old wm5/wm6 TYTN did. that extra ram and rom really makes a difference and the cpu is better also

Making the HTC sense homescreen run smoother

This thread is dedicated to tweaking the HTC Sense homescreen so that it runs smoother. In order to do this, one must have access to the homescreen's source code. I don't remember signing a NDA with HTC, so I don't have it. The only other solution is to disassemble the code and attempt to reconstruct the original source code from that. To do this:
1. Extract /system/app/Rosie.apk from a deodexed update (like this one)
2. Inside of Rosie.apk is a file called classes.dex. This contains all the classes in dalvik byte code form. Disassemble it using DeDexer and convert the binary xml to text xml using AXMLPrinter2
3. You now have the source in an assembly-like format. Now you gotta painstakingly turn all of that source by hand into java. As of now there's no way to assemble it back into bytecode, nor a way to automatically turn it into java files. I could really use some help with this step! I've attached a copy of the disassembled code to this post.
Original post:
So I've tried all sorts of homescreens, but my favorite has to be the original. Launcherpro comes in close, but you can't beat the quality of the homescreen widgets that come with the stock Sense launcher. It's a shame you can't use these widgets with any other launcher...
Only problem with it is that it's just not smooth. It reminds me of my old Omnia! So I was thinking, could it be possible to take the Rosie apk, disassemble the dalvik byte code, and make some optimizations to make it run more smoothly. One thing off the top of my head is how LauncherPro reduces the quality of the graphics when scrolling by default.
Forget about feasibility, I already know it's doable. It's just a question of how much patience I have for digging through thousands of lines of disassembled code, and whether anything can actually be improved.

If you increase your virtual memory heap size it should improve performance. You can increase the vm heap size in your build.prop file from the standard 24m to 32m by either flashing one of the update.zip files that includes this, or by editing the build.prop file manually.

You did essentially ask a yes-or-no question (Is this feasible?), so to say that you won't accept "no" answers is rather strange.
He did answer you. Yes, he was a bit sarcastic, but he did answer you. And he's right.
Edit: And yes, I'm a Java developer. Have been for over 5 years. So I'm not just being "retarded".
The Sense SMS app is garbage, it chugs so bad when you try to scroll.
Well, I've managed to disassemble the dex files into dalvik "bytecode" using dedexer. It'll take a while to comprehend what all this does... does anyone know of a way to transform this into a java source file? The slideshow that the project linked to says there was not any, as of 2009. Any new developments?
This is essentially what I'm doing. The stuff on the left is the output, while the stuff on the right is my interpretation. I turn all that "assembler" into java classes, and I have a more-or-less exact copy (minus the comments) of the source code of the original app.

This is from an app I made just to practice the art of disassembly before I tackle the Rosie APK.

I had no idea that GPU acceleration wasn't already in Android. Anyway, I don't think that's why this thing runs so slow, since other launchers are buttery smooth (like launcherpro) even without GPU acceleration.

Gingerbread is supposed to make custom skins (like Sense) obsolete, so this project will be pointless by the end of the year... assuming we get the update at all (this phone just barely makes the minimum spec)
But see, Sense is buttery smooth for me.
Yep, sense is smooth enough for me..espically with the manup evo theme

For me, it isn't... i'd say 30fps at the most, usually less and sometimes as low as 10fps. In comparison, launcherpro runs at 60fps all the time, occasionally dropping as low as 40-50fps. There's no comparison. I want that level of performance on the default homescreen, since it looks nicer than launcherpro and is more tightly integrated with the other apps.
You know what? It may just be a fps cap that makes it run so relatively sluggishly... I'll have to look into that.
How are you measuring what fps the launchers are running at?
Just guesses. It's fairly obvious that HTC sense it NOT running at 60fps. I remember back when I was developing andromnia (a port of android to the omnia) that there was an option to show a fps counter. You know where I can get that in 2.2?
I'm a bit confused. If launcherpro is running @ 60 FPS how can there be a cap.
I didn't think we had a cap since we don't have hdmi out.

I was talking about the sense launcher (and other HTC apps for that matter) possibly being capped, not launcherpro.
Now that I think about it, all HTC apps are a tad sluggish compared to android apps...
I mean, take a look at apps that have a scrollable list. Buttery smooth scrolling. But an identical HTC app with a scrollable list runs kinda sluggishly, don't you think?
Maybe I can dig out my camcorder and make a video that'll show you people the difference. I wonder if it records at 60fps...
Sense mms is laggay as **** too.

Hi all!
I have recently been playing around with the Sense 2.1 + Gingerbread (aka GingerSense) ROMs, and had to of course port (and improve) my original PCB Sense Theme from days ago. I have been testing it myself for quite a few days, and I'm finally happy with how it turned out, so I wanted to offer it up to all GingerSense XDA users.
Couple of things to note:
This design was meant to be close to stock for those who actually dig the Sense scheme, but want something unique
The file is a 7.7mb signed .APK created using apk-manager 4.9 for Sense 2.1...I may make a Sense 3.0 port if there is enough demand (need to play with .m10 editing still)
It is installable on HDPI devices only by simply copying to your device and running, and is uninstallable by Titanium Backup, or applying another Skin in Sense, and highlighting PCB Sense, then MENU --> DELETE...it doesn't appear in "Settings --> Applications", but why would you want to uninstall it anyways?
I have edited a poopload of images with utmost care and attention to detail including those precious draw9patch ones
The tricky thing with the draw9patch is to have a pattern get 'stretched/repeated' without looking crappy...I believe this may be one of the few Sense themes out there which attempts to skin >90% of resource images (I may be wrong, but still)
I tested (and approved of) this theme on my Desire (Bravo) running LeeDrOiD v3.3.1 and InsertCoin GB
The font used in all screenshots is "Ubuntu", however "Storopia" also compliments the skin nicely
The font used to make the custom clock widget is "OPTICBOT"
This theme took me about 55-60 hours to complete
I've seen some other mods/ports of my theme before, and while I am a believer in sharing and caring, it would be nice if you asked/PM'ed me before using my theme for any other purpose than your own enjoyment. I'm a nice dood, I promise, and it's good to give credit where it's due!
If you'd like to buy me a beer, coffee, or any other kind offering to say thanks, it's greatly appreciated and I will thank you personally... (Donate link is in my post profile)
Anyways, have a look at the preview images below, and please leave your thoughts! I hope you enjoy it!!! (Oh, and keep an eye on this thread for updates)

Heya retrosling, if you mean when you are in the "Phone" app, then yes, some images may not be fully skinned, but this is a limitation of the HTC Sense Skin .apk format itself. Note that there are no flashable .zips needed to use this theme, and that should allow it to be installed on multiple devices (with Sense 2.1 of course).
To skin many other components means that I would have to build a flashable .zip which modifies 'framework-res.apk', 'com.htc.resources.apk' and 'SystemUI.apk', and since these are based on certain ROMs, and can therefore be unique, I chose not to go that route for this theme (the logistics/maintenance of handling all bases/versions/ROM-specific customizations for these 3 .apks would be a nightmare of time consumption!)
Believe me, that I skinned nearly every single PNG that would allow it. The only ones missing (for now) would be for landscape support. Once we start getting more GingerSense ROMs with landscape homescreens, I will be adding them though. Good thing for updating is that you'd just have to re-download the .apk (same exact link/filename), and the .XML file defines that it's a newer version, then your phone should ask you if you want to update it. Super clean this .apk Skin route.
To everyone else who offered your great comments/feedback, thank you very much!! It's great to see others enjoying the benefits of the hard work it took to put together this theme!
All the best.
Just tried this on Robocik's v1.2 a2sd cm7 hboot and it does not seem to work.
Have I missed something?
Amazing.
I will say that I have allways found the backdrops you pick very distracting and make the icons hard to see, but then I am addicted to the glactic core live wallpaper - you should try it with the pcb sense - it really ties the screen theme together!
One thing I miss from the old PCB theme is the green circuit board buttons, but then I am sure I will get used to this... (see attached for what I mean)
perhaps an option in the future?
Again, Thanks!!!
Warmly, Marty

Hey ericb, thanks for trying this out on RCMix v1.2...I am not sure why it didn't work for you, as it should be in MENU --> PERSONALIZE --> SKIN. There is nothing specific relating to InsertCoin, so maybe it didn't install properly? Did you get any errors when you clicked on the .apk from a file browser to install it?
Only other thing I can think of would be to "Allow Unknown Sources" in SETTINGS --> APPLICATIONS, which might allow it to install since it isn't a pro-signed .apk.
Let me know though, as yours is the first report that it didn't work

One thing I miss from the old PCB theme is the green circuit board buttons, but then I am sure I will get used to this... (see attached for what I mean)
perhaps an option in the future?
Again, Thanks!!!
Warmly, Marty

Thanks Marty, this one was for you Anyways, I understand about the wallpaper/backdrop, but one NEEDS to be included in the .apk, and I figured people would pick their favourites anyways. I will also check out that galactic core LW that you love so dearly
I hear ya about the green PCB traces in my old theme version, and I went with grey this time because I wanted to make other colour versions overall. This would give the theme more consistency across all colour mods, since when you press those buttons, they light up green (and in the future, /blue/etc.).
Nothing's impossible though, so if I get a chance, I may make a classic version like that. Otherwise, if you REALLY want it, you can PM me and I can .zip up the files from the old theme so that you can drop them in this .apk and reinstall it...
@scar45
Just checked again and it had loaded ok.
Must have been impatient first time.
Looks really cool with great detailing.
Just need to work out how to change the top and bottom bits of the screen to match your skin.
Currently it is black and doesn't quite enhance yours.
I will feedback any problems.
Thanks for your reply

In terms of your top and bottom bits, if you are able to upload a screenshot that might help, but otherwise I'm not too sure which part you're talking about.

Hey Scar,
Well I slept on it (1.5 hours sleep last night, I am going to be a mess at uni today)
and I have to say I do prefer the one with the green buttons -
It breaks up all the grey a bit, and matches really well with the green traces on the clock.
So I would love a green version if you can make it.. - and I can imagine how cool a red and blue version will look too -
You should sell your theme to HTC and get it included as standard, make some $$$$ its very geeky and DIFFERENT from all the other themes that just look the same.
Warmly, Marty

Wow Marty, that's a hard-hitting factual story there, and I first my send my condolences to you and your partner as well. Losing someone to cancer is absolutely horrible, as I have had similar experiences in my life (although thank God no one in my immediate family). I promise you I will never squander any contributions that people send my way, as I really use it to help me stay living in my home and eating food Times are tight, but the joy that one can get from these types of devices is very much worth it.
I will definitely whip up a 'traditional edition' for you and anyone else who wants to download it though, as soon as I get some time (blah blah, broken record on my shortness of 'time' I know )

Sorry to be unclear.
I am talking about the top notification bar and the bottom button bar.
Would be nice to be able to colour match to give a seamless green colour to the skin.
This Skin is the ****! Incredible Work!
Can you also make a Sense 3.0 Skin?

Thank you, its appreciated mate. You are a gentleman and a scholar.
By the way, do you have the framework you use for all the notification icons battery mod etc?? Are you running the CM7 version?
Would love to use it - if I start mucking around in the UOT kitchen, I will never leave - too much choice.
Awesome - thank you! First theme I am actually going to install.
Running on IC CM7 v20, btw.

Well folks here you have, what is in all reality, the best rom I have created thus far. This is based off Newt's Incredible2 and Wdfowty's Remix. It basically picks up where Inc2 Remix left off, with many of my own enhancements added (and more planned). This is not your average 2.1 or 3.0 rom in one way...there is not a single thing wrong with it nor are there any "work-arounds" of any kind. I am officially calling this perfect (in large part due to it's great bases). Try it, I dare you, you will not be disappointed!
Normal disclaimer about how flashing a rom can be dangerous for your phone and such. Please always perform a backup before flashing any of my work (or anything really). If you some how mess up your phone it's your fault, not mine. You are not allowed to sue me, all you'd get would be student loans anyways.
THANKS
-As always, a huge thanks to Jermaine151 for getting me into developing and always being there to help.
-Newtoroot and Wdforty for allowing me to use their great roms as a base.

Based in the Incredible 2 and yes both the camera and camcorder work flawlessly; video is 100% smooth and crisp and photos look amazing. And I assume VZW backup works, though I have not tried it myself.

Woah pulling 3.5 users, never thought that would happen lol. And you are very welcome; as always, I do it for you guys so I hope you enjoy it.
I literally just flashed your McSense for the first time just 10 minutes ago. I was on Insensitive Minimalist for a while and MIUI before that but I miss sense.
So my question is, of McSense or McTwist...
Which one do you think is better?
Which one do you think is more stable?
I guess what I'm getting at is, is McTwist as stable as McSense even though it is not for this phone.

Haha sorry, blame my internet for not uploading 10 minutes faster. Hmm, well I would have to say they probably tie in stability (tied at 99.9%), but McSense probably has a slight edge in quickness (hard to beat pure sense 1.0). But this definitely makes up for it in features and functionality. I would say this one is better, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder..it all depends on what you are looking for.
For those who are downloading/flashing, please reboot back once you get it loaded with some feedback. I want to make sure it's running as good for all of you that it is for me.

Quick question...
Will these skins work with this rom?

This is great. My fall back recovery Rom is WD's Inc2 remix. One of the most stable, best battery Roms my phone has ever ran. If I wasn't hooked on Newts 3.5 monster I'd probably rock this. Great idea Mc

Yes sir they definitely should. This rom is based on 2.1 framework, so if they don't then we have a problem lol. Also a note to everyone: the "warm" theme that Incubus made for Synergy (NOT the one he just made for sense 1.0) should also work just fine.

Yup that was the exact same thing for me, so I decided to pick it up and make a few improvements on it and my own modifications and it came out pretty darn well. Yeah Newt's 3.5 does look hella sick (didn't get a chance to flash it since I was building this).
I'm tempted, so tempted. I'd really like a McSenseless built around this, though ... that's just me because I like the AOSP, look and feel

I've been working on the Inc2 base, although I wasn't adding some of the Sense 3.0 stuff that you did. (lock screen, etc.) But after seeing this, I think I might just use yours. Mine was more of a personal project, but this looks solid.
Going to try this now! Thx for putting it all together

Well I might be able to put together an AOSP skin for this (actually been thinking about doing that for a while), but I probably won't do an entire rework of this. I kind of want this to stay beefy and full-featured.

So it seems this home launcher is picking up some steam again... I thought maybe if I started this thread, we could get some devs on board and pick up support for this great launcher. Show some love and support by posting your screens and if you would like to share your setup, it's up to you (just don't forget; like I did to credit the original creator if you use their work... :0}

Thanks for starting this thread, I do hope the devs work on the launcher again. That said since all the themes are available for download within the launcher, it would be nice if we credited the original ones too right? I see you're using a modded setup of my original theme (sheepo), would be nice if you could mention that too. I have made too many sweeterhome themes to post all here atm, will do later sometime. Look forward to seeing this thread grow.

Indeed a very nice launcher, I loved this concept of share to care.
I didn't know it existed until someone posted some screen grabs in a thread I watch recently.
Peeked at the forum and it looks dead & overrun by spam bots. Is the launcher stable enough for daily use? I'm downloading some different themes & messing around & it doesn't seem that hard to do. Will probably play with other people's themes a while before trying out one of my own.

Sent from my rectangle robot.
I used it as daily for a pretty long time. It's not that it's that hard to customize, it is that it takes so much time!
I played for a while now and it seems pretty straight forward to me for most things. I like how in the sample themes people have made all sorts of setups that go in totally different directions.
Some quick thoughts/questions in no special order:
- User Base: I'm glad to see a couple replies already. I really don't want to get into this if I'm the only one using it. Need to have some people to bounce ideas off of & ask questions.
- Is it still in development, or is it 'finished' just the way it is?
- I like the idea of a slide down to the bottom of the + for all apps, but oddly I'm not seeing the use of the other 3 sides when it seems (off the top of my head) easier to hide & un-hide everything on one screen.
- There still no way to get to the other screens without a slide? Would be nice to make a button with a special action of jumping to one of the other screens.
- In some of the minimal themes, I see the use of the Contacts plugin/widget/thing. I like the look on the themes, but I don't want to see ALL of my contacts, just the favorite dozen or so. Any way to do it that I'm missing, or anyone know of a normal Android Widget that can show something like that?
- Overall, I'm probably going to play for a while & save version after version on my sd card (need to see where is saves, btw) BUT at some point I will really need to think if this method works any better then just Launcher Pro/Go Launcher/more 'normal' android home screens.

One of the main reasons I started this thread was I noticed more and more people using this launcher. It really is amazing how much customizing you can actually do. I was hoping if we get enough users the devs would pick up support for this and more features could be added. I am not sure if there has been any movement on this but the latest beta version was dated February 12th 2012(according to the website.) I too have not really found much use for the other slides but I guess it is nice if anyone uses a lot of widgets or simply just likes the real estate. I have not found if there is a way to jump to another screen by adding a springboard function, but I am still new to the launcher... Overall I feel this is the best launcher I have used as far as customizing goes, being able to move widgets, pictures, text boxes, wallpapers, colors, anywhere on the screen, as well as hide/unhide items; it's a themers dream... Just my two cents... On that note... Let's see some more screens!!!
