i never thought i see myslef posting in the Q&A forum soo.....
my problem is everytime im on google maps and i turn it on to traffic it will show me a lil bit of traffic and then it will say low on memory traffic has been turned off. and it will go back to map view. i have all my cache to sd thanks to move cache for root users app thats on the market. so i am stumped ??
It's a known bug in google maps. Nothing we can do about it
Ever since I updated my nexus to Froyo, when I'm using the browser itll start to take up all of my available memory causing me to get the low storage warning and sometimes stop me from getting text messages. The only way to free back up the memory is to go force close the browser, which is sometimes using up to 80 mb of data. Ive already tried a factory data reset and also went into the recovery and wiped and clear the cache. I never had this problem in 2.1 and its really annoying. anyone got any ideas? thanks.
forceclosing the browser wont clear up cache.... scroll down instead of forceclosing, and hit clear cache. dont do it through recovery

Yeah, the browser doesn't seem to limit cache, although I've never seen it use 80M. Most I've seen is 7M. I just clear cache through the Applications list, although in Froyo you can do it directly in the browser now.
if you visit the google forums, the android team has changed the browser in 2.2 to cache the pages you have open in your browser much more aggressively, so that when you go back to the browser the phone doesnt need to refresh the network and reload the page. i posted a link to the google topic before. but what this means is that the browser now takes up huge amounts of space as time goes on. killing it does bring back the space. personally i like this change, but i can see why it might suck for some people.

i posted against this issue, because i happen to like what they did to the new browser. god forbid they go back to the old way, it was not good.
I agree, the browser is better this way in some regards, but it needs to LIMIT what it does... If you don't manually clear cache it'll easily take 8+ megs of storage!

but its not the cache, its just a temporary storage usage. if you force close the browser, it regains back that storage. at least for me it does. my actual cache in the browser never changes, and hovers around 7mb.
Aaaand we're not using A2SD why???

Ah, sorry, I got off topic then.. I was talking specifically about the browser cache, which for me varies between 4-8.5M it seems.. and I clear it because otherwise I'm <20M

Simple solution
Friend was having the same issue but this was pre-froyo.
Found out that after viewing articles on the news and weather app and also viewing webpages she was just hitting the home softkey to return to the main page. This was causing new window after new window of fully loaded websites to be cached out of memory and into storage.
Although i agree there should be a caching limit on the browser there should also be an effort from the end user to close the unused windows when done (easily done through the windows menu). Also after using the news and weather app and any other app that uses the browser to display pages, it should be good practice to use the back button and not the home key.
I've always done that and now my girlfriend does it and guess what... its not an issue anymore.

Except that you can't use the back button in the browser if you've been browsing a lot, you'll be going backwards through a bunch of pages. And if you've logged in, you can't go past that at all as it'll want to repost data etc...
One could close the window I suppose, which would load a default homepage, then go back, but that's tedious.

Tedious? Thats almost as bad as that YouTube review of the Nexus where one guy said he had to move his hand "All the way up to the top of the phone" just to switch it on. (Surely we've all seen it?)
I wouldn't say tedious, just something to get used to. Sadly Google aren't quite there with their Google MindReader beta for Android but until then menus and manually closing windows work just fine ;-)

Not exactly "move hand to top of phone".
And again, my major complaint is about the lack of a limited browser cache, ie: html, css, images, cached for later reload. It grows over 8M, that's really too much IMO. Should be able to limit it, in which case I'd likely limit it to 2-3M myself and see how it worked out.

Actually I do that quite a bit. But you don't even have to. After you close all windows, it defaults to open a last page (Google home in my case), then just hit home cause there's nothing left to cache anyway, so back button or home button does the same thing, makes no difference.
hmm in my case it's also not the cache which makes the problems, but the "Data" of the browser app.
It easily exceeds 28MB!
And cache is only at 600kb, so clearing cache doesn't help.
Clearing the data helps. but it will delete all your bookmarks and other settings which is bull****.
Force closing the browser didn't help too (it helped in the past but interestingly not today).
Browser can not be installed on sd card. System updates can not be installed on external memory.

What? From apps, manage, all, find browser. Clear cache there. That does not clear up your 28M in ram?
my google maps is allways running i cant se it running in "running proceses" but if i check wats eating my battery in "batery use" google maps is top of the list whit 35%
also if i do a factory reset will it delete the preinstaled programs that the phone came whit also(google maps,youtube etc)?
and in running proceses it shows 78 mb used and 214 mb free.....wasent it suposed to have 512 mb of ram?

No, the pre-installed programs like Maps and YouTube shouldn't be impacted, they're in the /system/app folder, not the /data/app folder (where user installed apps go). Even if the Google apps were deleted, they're all available in the Market, so no big deal to download them manually if necessary.
The DATA for the pre-installed apps will get erased, though.
Your battery usage pointing to google maps may be related to running the Latitude portion of google maps...it's constantly on and tracking your position. go into the settings for google maps (layers perhaps) and make sure Latitude is turned off.

The missing memory is used by the system and not available to you; this confuses many people, but you should be okay.
google latitude is not on

Non-rooted, you might try going into Settings/Applications/Manage Applications/ All then finding Maps and uninstalling updates. Also, clear data, clear cache, etc. This might help you out.

The way Android works, killing tasks isn't advised. One of the reasons is exactly what you're seeing (I think what you're seeing)...if you kill an app that Android thinks you're going to use again any time soon, it just re-opens it in the background. It shouldn't be sucking up any significant resources in that state, though. Android doesn't like a lot of free memory..the linux mantra is "free memory is wasted memory".
Anyways, if you're rooted, you can try getting Autostarts off the market and tell it to keep Google Maps from autostarting on boot.
Also, if you're rooted, you could use Titanium or Root Explorer to delete the Google Maps apk and then re-download it from the Market.
What he's experiencing is a growing problem with Google Maps. There's currently a ton of people commenting about it in the market and I've seen it first hand.
I sat down with a bunch of friends the other day (all of whom have one Android device or another) and we all checked our battery usage has Google Maps at either the first or second position on the list. It appears to be a problem with the newest update, probably related to the caching its doing with the map data, but that's just a guess.
So I started using some apps like foursquare/instagram and I wanted to know If even i close them they keep using internet on the background. Since I close them (with data connectivity off) and when i enable data connectivity(long press on power button) it shows immediately some notifications of foursquare.
The main point of this question is that i want to keep data connectivity always on, cause it seems turning on and off wastes some battery, but i don't want apps leaching internet on the background.

1) data use - you could try a data manager app like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobidia.android.mdm which will show you how much data they are using. You might find these apps are using not much of your allowance anyway.
2) task manager (e.g. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.taskmanager ) can stop apps running in background but most people in the know seem to advise against using things like this.
3) you could try freezing the apps with something like titanium backup and unfreeze them when you want to use them.
4) apps like foursquare or instagram don't really fall into the urgent category. Uninstall them if you don't like what they do. Everything will be fine as you will manage without them

Alternatives on rooted phones are firewalls which edit ip tables, such as droidwall.
Even if each app uses a marginal amount of data, when you have lots of apps it can become a huge expense. Most play store apps request internet access, even games and multimedia apps that don't really need it (it can add up to 5-10 mb a day just by having them installed).

Won't a firewall(like droidwall as u said) drain battery since it has to continusly keep running?
Cause my goal here is to try to fight the battery usage of turning data connectivy on/off ;P

No. It edits a file, ip tables, which is the native linux firewall, included in the ace.
It edits it when you enable, disable or change the firewall settings, like creating a text file, and runs on boot. The phone checks this file whenever an app asks for internet, and grants/denies the permission accordingly. Even if you don't have droidwall, the phone checks ip tables rules, droidwall is just a user friendly way to edit and control it.

Hi, i got my new nexus 6 few weeks before.on google latest update,i cant clear ram memory.i am unable to use any 3rd party ram cleaning app.is what gogle want us to do(not to use cleaning app)??is it only me having this problem??
I am on pure stock,no root.
Haven't used ram cleaning apps in years. Slows device down. Unused ram is wasted ram.

on m as well, no ram apps work. but, there is some good news as well(especially for those none users of clear ram apps), the ram management is actually working properly now, at least with m. with all my years with android, every nexus phone as well, this is the first time that the ram management has worked properly, as i have seen, in pure android. yes none believers, ram management never functioned properly in any nexus before. now it does

Both my Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 clear cache much quicker in bootloader since the 48I update, for me anyway.

Thanks for an update. I had galaxy nexus(aka nexus 3) and one x and both of them needed a ram cleaning app. So, Trying to make myself not to use any ram cleaning app since nexus 6 is a high end device and has a improved ram management.

Yes, no Cleaners needed. But there is another thing 'background data'.
More and more apps that send/receive data in the background.

Just attention.
Cleaners have a lot of options, among others closing apps / preventing autostart / data.
When you uninstall a cleaner then do not forget the per app 'restrict background data switches' for cellular and WiFi data.
