HVGA Swype ... but not - Droid Eris Themes and Apps

AndroidSPIN is reporting that an HVGA version of Swype is now available, letting those of us with Eris' finally take a crack at this thing.
Which would be great, if it functioned. The install process goes okay (a step above the poor G1 users out there), but the keyboard then ... nothing. It's as though it doesn't exist. The Settings options are there (under Locale + Text), but nothing seems to happen. adb logcat revealed nothing in particular.
Anybody know what's up here?

You might want to follow this thread and see if it works for you.

I would try it but I'm more of a two handed typer myself...

I like the HTC Keyboard... (maybe because I just got the phone and I'm not tired of it yet). I had swype on my Omnia before I sold it, and it worked ok there because the small, lower res screen made touch typing difficult. I'm not finding that on the Eris. Although Swype would be more fun with a capacitive screen, I had to really push hard to get to work right on the Omnia...

I agree, the HTC keyboard is top-notch. I'm already at near-native typing speed on common words. It was more out of curiosity than anything. I'm always fascinated by emerging input technologies for embedded devices, and this seemed the most clever one to cross my desk in a while.

lol...no trickery...just MAGIC! lmao.
Just download it...
Then go into settings/locale&text/ and check the swype box.
Then head into your text or email app, and long press your dialogue box, it will ask you which input you wanna use swype or default keyboard and select swype!
Only prob I am having is that when i am in landscape mode, it will type but it wont show what i am typing on the screen, but if i switch to portrait it is there? weirdness...

Works just fine for me. make sure to disable audio sounds in the swype settings, there is a bug with the sounds.

I tried using it yesterday but it just wasn't my cup of tea...

here... http://rapidshare.com/files/354228280/Swype.micro.1.16.apk
this version is working fine for me, no expire warning. micro version = no tutorial/help file.

i really love swype on the eris.. it makes typing soooooo easy.

Lucid REM's keyboard

I searched but couldn't find anything about this app here so I thought I'd start a thread. If I missed it, please redirect me.
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.lucid.qwerty
Has anyone else bought and installed this? When I saw it I didn't hesitate, just bought it because of all of Lucid's other work. No it's not a finished product -- as he says in the product listing, it's a work in progress and he's quite open to suggestions, revising it pretty much daily since it appeared.
The way it works is this: most keys have two letters on them and this lets him make each key larger than the keys on the standard keyboards. To get the 1st character, press once, to get the 2nd character, quick press the key twice. You may notice there's no left or right parenthesis - in the current version (1.51.06), while there's no hint on the keyfaces, you can long-press quite a few of the keys and you'll get alternate text. For instance, long-pressing the "jk" key will give you "(" and "l" will give you ")". I bought it and am keeping it because
1) I like to support active developers
2) I like to help shape an app -- Lucid responds quickly and well to suggestions and bug reports
Do I have it set as my default input method? No. But I use it regularly cuz, well, my fingers are big and it's easier to work with two letters per key than 3
I'll post some screenshots when I get a chance (unless someone else beats me to it).

Dude htc ime has that option, its compact qwerty instead of qwerty, works real well, its free, and its probably just as good as the iPhone keyboard when it come to correction and all that.. but hey if you want to support the dev cool but it looks like his idea is a little to expensive in a market where that already exist, to little to late.. also the new touchpal keyboard has the same option and i believe theres a free beta..

Dude, the developers of HTC's IME aren't reading XDA nor is there any meaningful way to influence their development on a daily basis. The CooTek offering is a different story -- I was a beta tester before they released and I've used their keyboard on Windows Mobile every since -- they're good and they listen.
BUT, Lucid's HERE and listens on a daily basis. You can directly influence how it looks and how it works today. If you're not interested, that's OK. But Lucid's demonstrated time and again that he's interested in furthering Android and the community in general so I'm supporting it and him. That doesn't mean I can't support other methods, too.

Swype vs HTC_IME?

I recently discovered both and I'm not sure which one I like best. What does everyone else like?
I was the same way so I kept both. That way I can switch whenever I want to man. It's nice.
I have both, but my fallback is the T9 keyboard from HTC. Swype is a funky concept, but in the end, a qwerty keyboard is a qwerty keyboard to me. I don't need another one if I have a physical one already.
Swype.Its so fast to type.
Swype, because now I can easily text with one hand while driving.
HTC_IME is the best VK around.
Swype !!!
and the 1.16.12.5230.t version even better
Swype it is.having to tick every letter is just soo annoying.and if I choose to, I can still do this with swype. Plus its a thing ipod users envy
Swype is good enough that I would consider buying a phone without a physical keyboard.
when i have to type web addresses in, i go with the htc ime, othewise, swype all the way (on a MT3G)
i use swype to play with... honestly i'm faster with a qwerty keyboard (i use better keyboard) but swype really is something to behold.

tried the 1.16...... version?
its much better at the standard 'single tap' typing than the 0.5...
swype.
Most defintely swype beats the htc IME for me. It just so smooth and make sure you get the newer version! Honestly, its slower for me to open my keyboard anymore...Now i have actually decided to get the nexus because typing will be a breeze.
I just downloaded Swype, it is amazing. I can type much faster single handedly (don't drive and text!) than with HTC IME. It is much more forgiving, which considering my large fingers and the Dream's tiny screen, is absolutely great.

hmm, didn't even notice that
the version number in my sig is taken from the swype settings
may be they round it off
edit : oh, file shows as Swype-SwypeReference-HVGA-trial-release.1.16.12.5228.219 on mediafile
i switch between three input methods:
swype is my primary for email, sms and such when at work, home, or out and about. ...and to simply make iphone people drool.
android keyboard from nexus has taken over the roll that ime use to fill since it has speech to text so it serves as my input when in the car so i can respond to emails the same way i can with handcent sms...just talk to the phone and watch the words appear
when i end up needing to surf web for a while or input email addresses, i still find myself falling back to htc_ime.
I tried installing Swype-SwypeReference-HVGA-trial-release.1.16.12.5228.219.apk via ASTRO.. I already had the "version 1" installed, so it offered me to "upgrade".. and I went down that path until it said "Swype cannot be installed on this phone"
??
EDIT: I also tried Apps Installer, but that always FCs on me
EDIT2: I uninstalled previous version of Swype.. rebooted.. launched Apps Installer (no FC this time) and the new Swype installed.
love Swype.....
IMO better than HTC_IME, especially with different lang.
very accurate for me, even in Korean typing!!! Cool
I have tried every setting in Swype, but I keep getting a little pop up thing with symbols on it. I can't figure out how to get anything to type. I have gone through the instructions, but I guess I need to watch the tutorial.

new texting keyboard for 240x320 myns vogue?

i do like the keyboard that it comes with, but my fingers are too big. i hit the "." when i mean to hit "space", and i hit other buttons when i dont mean to. i want something that will learn my keystrokes. my buddy was telling me about HTC_IME and clicker, but i cant seem to find the right files. i looked into a tatto build, and took the apk files, but they wont install. i get "this program can not install on this device" error
just seeing whats out there. i tried installing the 320x480 myns, but the screen doesnt line up right on anything for me.
I use the free ShapeWriter keyboard found in the Android Market.
Hope this helps.

If you want only the english language...you can ignure the steps with language... But you must change to 120 dpi and change the dialer (contacts.apk)....look here:
Htc ime... it´s a long way....
Start....:
Installation Instructions
1. Install both HTC_IME.apk and Clicker.apk.
2. Rename/remove the file /system/lib/libt9.so (I suggest renaming to libt9bk.so). You need root permissions to do this (the program Root Explorer works great.)
3. Menu -> Settings -> Locale & text. Enable 'Touch Input'.
4. Go to a text field and long-hold until a menu pops up.
5. Select 'Input Method' and then 'Touch Input'
1.1 Download the latest htc ime from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567294
or here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=661525
2.1 make the system root/write access to change the name of libt9
- open terminal
- type "su"
- type "mount -o remount,rw /system"
... and then I could rename the file w/ Root Explorer (must be root explorer..i think)
3.1 change the language: look here:
http://ostebaronen.dk/changing-htc_ime-language-to-danish/
a bit easier: change to htc ime...go to sms and long press on the input text...now a menu come and you can change....
go in a explorer to: data/data/com.htc.android.htcime/shared_prefs/com.htc.android.htcime_preferences.xml (now visible)--and copy it to sd card...
open the xml and change the language code (like in the link)....copy it over the old one....
please do not change the lang setting in text input settings...(you don´t see a lang in this box now)
i think it was all
edit: for the correct view: change to 120 dpi....and take my corrected dialer:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=676102
Now it´s all...i hope
Super easy, you can get the HTC keyboard in 240x320.
Just follow the instructions,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=661525
You will need to d/l the two files and install root explorer.

With kind regards..Alex
personally i like the HTC keyboard because i feel the text prediction better because of the clicker.apk includes a calibration app and it seems to adapt to me alot fast than other keyboards.
i also like that if i want to use a number or symbol i can just long hold on a key instead of having to switch to a secondary menu all the time
also staticchmbr i feel like i know you from somewhere?

That's your problem. You have a 240x320 hardware screen on the Vogue, and you are trying to use a resolution that it is not meant for. I do not understand why people think they can do this, and still expect things to function. First of all, you do not NEED the extra resolution, I run about 20 games and 15 apps on my phone, of all different sources, and 240x320 is fine. Secondly, use LCD density "113", just change the build.prop file before flashing NAND, and you are good to go. I have zero issues at all, with any apps.
-C
i AM running the 240x320, but tried the 320x480 just in case that was the issue. finally got it installed, but everytime i run the calibration it says" SORRY, the application has stopped unexpectedly. please try again".. maybe i just dont have the right file? i got it from another topic on here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=661525&page=5
Can someone please tell me what is wrong with the default Android keyboard? I am 6'7" tall, and my hands are HUGE. My pinky is bigger than my wife's thumb, and I actually text with MY thumb, just fine, which is friggin huge, and I have no issues.
I am just baffled, because I see these 'alternate keyboard' threads all the time, so obviously there must be an issue for some ppl with the keyboard, but I guess for once it is not for us fat-fingers folks. Is it hard to use for small fingers maybe? I am so curious about this as the Android keyboard is such a breeze for me to use.

I agree. I prefer the default keyboard myself.
It's faster too

Yeah, I love the speed of the default keyboard. I've tried Betterkeyboard, and all those, Shapewriter, I think just about every one, and while some are cool, and hold potential, for me none compare to the speed of input in the default. I can type pretty damn fast with the default.
The only keyboard I can see being significantly better is Touchpal. If you remember it from Winmo, it was a FAST and efficient keyboard. But the developer keeps promising a release date, and renigging on it. If you feel like a laugh, go check out the forums:

Yeah I really couldn't find the appeal what do you like about it?

Anyone else think the stock keyboard is still the best?

I've tried a lot of different keyboards on my phone and for a while I thought the HTC IME was the best and that's what I used as my primary keyboard, but on my last wipe I was feeling lazy and didn't install it and instead used the stock keyboard for a while and I was amazed at how much better it is!
I make way less errors on the stock keyboard, the key layout seems to make more sense, and the keys do a better job of changing based on context (such as changing the return key to a "Next" key in web forms or smile button in gchat). The HTC keyboard still looks the nicest, and I like that you can long press keys to get numbers and symbols, but I found it very annoying that while you can see the alternate symbols on the keyboard, pressing the alt key causes everything to shift over a key or two. I'm always chasing keys around!
I tried out Froyo for a while and the stock keyboard is getting even better! It shows common punctuation in the suggestion bar after completing a word, and it has a much nicer approach to adding new words to the dictionary. I hated how all my typos ended up getting added to the dictionary with the HTC keyboard.
Anyone else feel the same way?
I too have found the stock keyboard very capable. Especially for how accurate voice input is.
My only wish is that Google would allow you to enter a line break with the stock keyboard when composing an SMS.
I agree. Coming from an iPhone, I have no problems with the keyboard, and Froyo's keyboard is really nice!
Yeah the stock keyboard in Froyo is awesome, I still use Better Keyboard just because I like the look of it better and ive gotten used to the key placement, but stock is definitely awesome, once its themed I may switch to it. I dont use predictive text or anything like that though so those features dont really factor in for me.
I never got why the stock keyboard gets such a bad reputation. I wish you could pick different word choices after you move on from a word, but other than that I like it a lot.

Are you still using Better Keyboard with Froyo? I used it with 2.1, but since upgrading to Froyo, Better Keyboard doesn't seem to auto correct my words and isn't prompting me for alternate words like it used to. I'm uninstalled and reinstalled too and it hasn't made a difference.
I preferred Better Keyboard because of its key placement and the skins, but since I can't get the auto correct to work with Froyo, I haven't been using it.
Also using better keyboard here (on Eclair). Love the long press to get to most symbols. I find it better than the stock 2.1 keyboard.
Here's a good overview of the options out there:
http://www.androidcentral.com/android-centrals-keyboard-roundup
I think the default is some pretty mean beef. I like the customisability of HTC IME, but even a totally stock keyboard seems better. I wish I could extend the space bar so it was massive though, thats the ONLY errors i make.
I don't know if it's the best or not; it's certainly good enough that I haven't had to use any others...
Definetly not as good as the "better keyboard". Multi touch without a delay when using sound and vibration. Something the default keyboard can't do, not even the htc one.
I use the numbered 1-9 keyboard using T9 since its so fast. But I never had a problem with the stock android keyboard. Some say its not good and auto correct doesn't work but I found it works perfectly.
Just fly thru your words, don't even have to hit exact keys, and it gets close to all correct.

I used swype for a while and it's pretty awesome. The best part about it is the fact that you can type quickly one-handed. Unfortunately I like to use voice input sometimes and there is no button for that on swype.
Better keyboard looks promising, but I actually haven't tried it. Maybe I will.
I still think that I can type as fast on the stock keyboard as I can with swipe. I find that I seem to spell out words as I type them, and swype forces me to think about the full spelling much earlier and it slows me down from time to time.
Tried stock, didn't like it. Then, SwiftKey, that was pretty awesome but not as good as Swype!
i really like smart keyboard pro. i really dislike having to do extra presses to get symbols :\ why cant the stock keyboard just let you hold and get a symbol?

Disagree. Was just talking about Swype over here
I really like Swype, but there is just one thing that really spoils it for me. Entering words and text is just great. Love the way it works and I find it satisfyingly easy to enter text.
BUT when I have to enter logins into dialog boxes or URLs in an address bar on my N1, everything turns to Sh1t for me. I know you can still peck keys, but I keep finding it adds the wrong characters and symbols. It becomes such a PITA that I have temporarily stopped using Skype and have gone back to stock.
What I would like is a simple gesture like 3 taps of the Swype button to toggle swyping on/off. Then I could temporarily have regular keyboard behaviour for these short periods when I am not entering words.
So for now, I am with the OP. I reckon Stock is best.

[Q] DHD + Swype, is it possible?

hey guys,
as the title suggest, can we install swype on the Desire HD?
It works exellent. I came from the galaxy s, and swype was the one thing i missed.
It worked just fine. But you will have to search for a version with your language in it. Then just install it as any APK file. Good luck
I've been using it just fine since I got my DHD - works great, although I wish the annoying pop up about custom words or whatever would disappear.

I find it annoying, when you double tap a word because it's wrong, you get the word selector as well as the Sense popup, so you can't see all the words
which version of swpe are you using i thought it had trouble with landscape on the DHD
I much prefer shapewriter to swype, they are not hugely different, but shapewriter has a few features i prefer.

1.6 works great tough. Swype is really awsome as soon as you get used to it.
I do agree that Swype works flawlessly on the DHD....
However, I must admit, I like the HTC keyboard better....
It better predicts and auto corrects the words I need (in Dutch), also, with swype I find it more difficult to type letter by letter...

Also, I have contact with a surname that keeps being used when I Swype 'mate'. I did what it said to remove it, it didn't work. I even removed the contact itself... didn't work!
Any ideas?

Which Sywpe version are you using? I have rolled back to an older version as the newer beta is absolute crap, the word selector was driving me up the wall.
Version 2.10.52.13753.t100
I would agree it seems to have go worse These days it seems much harder for it to work out what I write. Which version do you have?

I'd edit that ASAP, you're offering illegal software.
