Total random reboot? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sense I have installed Beta3 of Cyanogen my phone reboots completely randomly. It will be sitting on my desk doing nothing..and just reboot. Anybody else have the same?

nope...you might want to try a wipe, and reflash

I just threw CM 5.0 beta 3 on my N1 last night and I've been getting random reboots as well. I also added the JIT mod so I was thinking that it may be because of that. Do you have JIT enabled as well? Might be the instability of the JIT.

I don't have the JIT mod running the CM 5 beta 3 and I too get random reboots as well...

Good to know, I suspect it may just be the ROM then, hence the "Experimental" tag.

Well I don't think it's the ROM honestly, as I would get them before I rooted only far far less. There have been instances where I'll be typing a text and it will freeze and reboot or after I reboot the phone and slide to unlock it will freeze and reboot...and other times it just...reboots.

Well, I thought I was the only one, I have been getting those reboots for sometime now. I only had the MT update from Cyanogen , thought it was the reason, so when I updated with Google's latest ERD27 I thought it will go away, but it only got worse, its happening more frequent now. I have Modaco Superboot installed, and thats pretty much the only non stock thing I added to my phone at this point.
Any idea why this could be happening ? BTW I noticed this is more frequent when the USB is mounted and im coping files, it just reboots out of the blue.

I noticed this when moving over 1.5 GB of music as well. After it rebooted I grabbed /proc/last_kmsg and it showed a null pointer exception and a kernel panic (hence the reboot). I figured this was due to either the highmem kernel (as .29 still requires the 1:1 mapping) or something else in CM's beta rom, but since going back to bone stock with the OTA update it did reboot on its own once while just sitting on the desk (I didn't grab the last_kmsg but I should have). So, it appears to not be isolated to the Beta rom at all. However, when using CM's rom I could get it to reboot like clockwork copying to the SD card. I've copied 4+ GB of data onto the SD card on stock and not seen the issue recur, only once while it was sitting on the desk.
If anyone can grab a log from the stock rom when it reboots it will probably be worthwhile to report it to google in case it is indeed a sw issue.

Well, it happened many times for me while the phone is just lying on the desk. Though it was before the update. After the update it only happened once. I didnt know where to grab the log file, but now I know so next time it happens I will share my info.
Im on Stock rom, with only the HIMEM Bootloader from Modaco.

It happened to me the other day. My phone was sitting on the couch doing nothing and it rebooted and I'm not rooted. I did manually flash the new update to the phone however. Don't know why it would do that.

Anybody experiencing reboots when transfering large files with usb cable. Not sure if it's because of the update I just got the phone this week and rooted and updated before trying before the update.

My phone rebooted on its own today.
It was charging via usb and asleep at the time. (2.1.1)

I think we can confidently assume this is linked to the latest update from Google.
Could it be something from the new kernel?
Currently in NOT SO SUNNY Los Angeles!!

I'm so happy I'm not the only one! After installing the OTA update manually my phone seems to be rebooting quite a bit, and freezing up as well. I've had to do a battey pull a number of times now the phone gets so locked up. I'm running an unrooted stock phone without any custom apps installed.

So far its only happened once. Do you guys know if there is a system error log that i can look at? Something like event viewer in windows where i can see what caused the crash?

I can cause mine to reboot at will....
It did not do this prior to the update which i applied manually.
My N1 is not rooted.
All i need to do is set it to "use 2g networks only" and about 10secs later...it reboots.
This occurs in a location where network signal is quite weak. Ive not tried it in a location with strong network signal.
If anything i think the update has resulted in worse radio performance.

[Q] Stop Android from updating to 2.2

Is there a way to stop my Droid from updating OTA to FroYo? I have flashed my Droid over to Cricket and have Bugless Beast v0.4 installed, and now since the 2.2 OTA update has been released I get a constant notification that the update is available. The only options I get are to install now or to install later, but what if I don't want to install it all and just get rid of the pesky notification that keeps popping up every so often after I press install later. I already have 2.2 on my system with Bugless Beast so I'm not really missing out on anything. I don't want to update and have to reroot, reinstall Bugless Beast, and reflash my Droid to Cricket again. I'm happy where my system is at
If you have a custom recovery, then as soon as you reboot into the installation your phone thinks that you've accepted, but the custom recovery blocks the installation and you stay on BB.
What do you mean by reboot into installation?
I've booted into clockwork recovery and then restarted the phone, but nothing seemed to change. Is that what you meant to do?
Flash SPRecovery. Then select "install now". It will send a notification that it has been installed on your phone to the servers that send out the OTA but SPRecovery will block the installation of it onto your phone, thus stopping the notifications of an update and keeping you on BB v.04 w/ Cricket. You can flash back to CW Recovery if you want to afterwards.
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
Im also running BB.04 and got the OTA notification today. Glad I found this thread because I was starting to get worried. I clicked 'install now', rebooted and so far no notification and I am still on BB.04. Woot!
Thank you for this!
Running BB 0.4. I saw the verizon 2.2 Froyo upgrade this morning, and for a second I was psyched verizon finally pushed it out... then I was a little worried about what was going to happen to mine since it was rooted and running a 2.2 Rom I was already happy with. Just like this thread says, I clicked install, and the phone rebooted right back up to my BB 0.4 without any issues.
I'd hate to say I'm a leech, but you guys have so much information here, and I cannot stop reading lol. I commend everyone one of you Devs for all the work you do!
Thank you again,
-Dano
Yup, it worked perfectly! Thank you!
Interesting. I was able to block it the first time but it popped up again. Anyone know why? Maybe there is another update to the 2.2 OTA update?
I was having the same issue with the ota update until I came across this:
http://www.peteralfonso.com/2010/08/how-to-stop-ota-notifications-on.html#more
it says it is for Buggles rom but I am using a different rom and it worked just fine
I had received this notification about four times before it recognized that I'm updated without rebooting the phone for it to be blocked. Nothing else had to be done except for saying yes.
stephen730 said:
whatchoo mean able to block it? You mean you clicked install later? Or you let it run and it goes away?
If you let it run/fail it will just come back again a day later, a week later, next time you reboot, next time you come out of screen off, etc... Its done it to me and it sucks cause it won't go away number 1, and number 2, i hate to keep rebooting to fail and possibly missing calls/texts... especially when you first wake up and the message is there like a nagscreen or advert.

I clicked install now and my recovery image blocks the installation when rebooted. It shows the Android guy with the exclamtion point but it doesnt finish the install. Reboot then im back to the way I was. Im running BBv.4 btw. I havent got another prompt yet.

update.zip in stock recovery over completely stock phone.
I haven't rooted nor unlocked this phone, ever (yet).
It happen to me too a few times, with oxygen RC rom. I couldn't identify any pattern on why it rebooted.
Wasn't this reboot issue on the nexus s during an active phone call, and the phone would reboot? Or are there 2 different issues?

Receiving the same update 2 weeks later doesn't mean it was fixed.
So far as I can tell, its only happened once. While market auto updated. It was when i switched notify to do not notify *(for market updates). It may be coincidence that i was doing that at the time.
My gut tells me that a process is dying or being killed and forcing the phone to go into kernel panic and reboot.

Randoom Reboots on Lollipop, multiple ROMs with the same issue

Ok, I have been searching for a couple of weeks now but I have not found a soulution. I recently recieved a replacement Note 4. I updated it to Lollipop, then rooted and flashed Rapture.
Ever since, I have been experiencing random reboots and the occasional loss of data. This is not a Rapture problem it appears. I have had the issue with both versions of the Rapture Lollipop builds, DarthStalker, and stock Deodexed COD6. I did not have this problem on my last Note 4 which had the first Rapture build on it.
I have factory reset, I have Odined back to stock and repeated the rooting process, following the guides posted here to the letter and I still have the problem. Any help in resolving this issue is greatly appreciated.

Seeing that it's happening on so many different Roms; it's something you're installing on your device.
Does it happen on a fresh stock rooted COD6 with nothing installed 3rd party?
I have not tried a stock run without third party apps installed. I will try a fresh install of stock COD6 with root and see how that fairs. It normally happens the first time within an hour of flashing so it won't take long to see if it happens I believe.
I was getting one or two random reboots a day after updating to LP. I noticed most reboots happened after I finish or during use of Google All Access. I have a lot of tracks stored on my SD cards. Once I refreshed the tacks [in all access settings], I haven't has a reboot since.

So I tried stock rooted without third party apps installed. Got 2 reboots but no loss of data. Seems like it's something with the device itself or should I try just running without root?

I wish it was something that simple. The only consistency I am getting in terms of reproducing it is trying to multitasking and possibly having too many apps running in the background, but sometimes it happens with just 2 or 3 apps running so I am not sure.
What's really annoying about it all is the first unit I had ran flawlessly, even after the 5.0 update.

Does your device get really hot right before it does the random reboots? Could be thermal function of the Note 4. 805SOC is a very hot chip albeit not as bad as the 810 but pretty dang close if you ask me!!! If no heat issues then see below
Give this a try:
This will require you to Odin to COD6 Stock NO ROOT!!!
Shut down and take out your External SDCard.
Boot into TWRP or Flash TWRP if you don't have it on there right now
Do a FULL WIPE: Factory Reset 3x, Advanced Wipe(Everything there) 3x, and finally Format Data(where you have to type yes) 3x
Power off your device and start it up into Download mode and Odin COD6 Stock Firmware(the full one not the partial)
Let it do it's thing and then simply use the device for a few hours on just pure stock.
DO NOT INSERT YOUR SD CARD!!! Why? We want to make sure it isn't something on your card causing Indexing to hang and force reboot.
If you get no reboots then go ahead and shutdown and insert your SDCard and use your device. Still no reboots? Then go ahead and Root. Still no reboots? It's resolved.
This process of elimination is lengthy but it is effective.

I can't say that I have noticed it in the past, however, it froze up shortly after I read the email notification of your response and was quite warm towards the top half. I pulled the battery expecting it to reboot anyway. Is there anyway to mitigate the thermal affect if it is indeed the culprit?
I will try the second method this evening and see if there's any change in behavior and report back sometime tomorrow. Thank you for your assistance with this.

Yes but it is not recommended. Using Synapse from the playstore will do such a thing but it requires a custom Kernel. If it is a thermal issue your device may be defective seeing that it's spiking so much so quickly and just crashing.
Definitely give the process of elimination a try that I suggest in my previous post. If it fails at the first step of being pure stock no SDCard then I'm afraid you need a new device.
Hi KingBeef,
Unfortunately, I have the exact same issues you do. Except I've tried literally everything. Even Odin back to stock KitKat. Seems to reboot or randomly shut off if more than 3-4 apps are running at completely random times. No SD card as well to confirm it's not that. The only difference I see with your situation is my phone will degrade after 3rd day of use. First 2 days are flawless, then almost like a failing hard drive, things start to domino progressively worse. My last attempt was to run it only in wifi mode, no SIM card.
The only thing left is to consider unfortunately is swapping again under warranty. I myself am waiting until I go back to the US (Cad user here) to swap with TMo for another handset.
Good luck!

Offered software update to same version I'm already on

Something slightly odd happened just now - my Z3C popped up with a Xperia System Update telling me it was ready to install to 23.4.A.1.264 just now. This is slightly confusing as I'm already on that version and have been for some time (I flashed a pre-rooted rom via recovery weeks ago). I doubled checked to make sure my mind wasn't playing tricks on me and the phone reports it is definitely on 23.4.A.1264. The message came back after a reboot so I've just selected to postpone the update and set reminders to "never" but why is this happening?
Edit- meant to post this in Q&A - sorry, can a mod move it for me?
No idea. I've received the same update as well.
Same for me. Just got one a few hours ago.
I also got the notice. I have Xposed installed and have modified the kernel with dual recovery. Does everyone else have a similar setup? Maybe the OTA service has issues detecting the system version after some partitions have been modified.
I am fully stock and I got the same update. It did nothing but restart my phone.
At least it's not just me then. It's very persistent though, despite setting it to postpone forever it still keeps giving the message each day.
January Android bugfix, supposed to fully fix stagefright.
I haven't updated and I haven't seen the update recently. I guess Sony fixed it on their end.

[Q] Android Process FCs and General Device Instability After Flashing MMB29V

Hello all. Generally I've been able to troubleshoot all my Android issues on my own. Most of the time someone has had the same problem (amirite?!). However, I'm stumped and could use a little help from the community.
I've been going along on Marshmallow with FK as my kernel. Generally, waiting a bit to take an update til SuperSU was confirmed all working correctly and that there wasn't any surprises. I had been putting off the MMB29V update for a bit just because everything was running fine and I had no real reason to upgrade. Well, one day I started getting a few FCs and things seemed a bit off performance wise so I decided that I'd go and move on to the next release.
Now, since I've had my N6 I really haven't had the need to run a custom ROM which is completely unlike my old habits on the S3. I decided that it's been a while since I've checked out AOSP so I flashed MMB29V using the batch file with no issues and then DU and their recommended GApps. Here's the first hint of an issue. When I loaded up the OS for the first time I got acore and phone FC's constantly. I instantly thought that I didn't wipe something or that I had a bad zip. I re-downloaded everything and checked MD5s. Everything looked good and after the flash I was able to get through the setup wizard without any issues. As I was sitting there checking out the tweaks and options available I started getting FCs again. It seemed related to Google apps. I did the whole process a second time and still had the same issues. Basically it seemed like at some random point in time the FCs would come and then shortly after the device would be highly unstable. I'd get random reboots, etc. Looking at the stack traces the errors seemed like odd NPEs and native errors.
I decided that AOSP wasn't going to cut it right now if I was going to have a relatively unstable phone and went to flash completely back to stock. Much to my surprise I still got the same errors! Apps like Feedly would never even be able to open. They would just FC on launch. The device hot reboots. The phone process seems to crash during most calls. I triple checked my MD5 on the download from Google. Made sure I wasn't doing something super stupid. I even tried doing the factory flash, booting to the welcome screen, then powering down, going to stock recovery, and factory resetting before continuing. All the same errors.
I've flashed back to complete stock a few times before without any issues. I've been able to flash system.img without any issues. Now it seems like the phone is completely unstable no matter what I do. I get the "Your device is corrupt. It can't be trusted and may not work properly." (red) message when doing a cold boot.
So... What gives? Am I completely blanking on a step here? Is it possible that I have a hardware issue that is corrupting stuff (I've suffered a bad DIMM before in a desktop and it was mind numbingly frustrating)?
I've burned through two backup cards of Google 2-Step backup codes! I'd really like to figure this one out!

You could read the OP of the following thread and flash a debloated and prerooted ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3059493
I guess I'll try that. I'm still scratching my head why a flash from the factory image is still suffering from FC's and general instability. It also concerns me that I get the corrupted message at boot. It would be one thing if I flashed factory, then put a recovery, kernel, and rooted, but I haven't done that.
Hopefully I'll get a chance to try that this evening. Thanks for the link to that image. It's pretty much what I run when I take an update.
N, n, ne, necromancy!
I brought this thread back to life because I've never been able to solve the instability issues since my last post back in March.
Having some free time lately I decided to nuke my device and start again. I first grabbed the latest stock image and flashed stock. Then I downloaded the latest TWRP and Dirty Unicorns and decided that I'd give it a whirl again. I had FC issues right after the first go at it. I decided to try another GAPPs and do it again. I was able to get through setup. It took a few hours but the FCs started again.
I decided that I would try factory resetting the device and then starting a setup. I remembered that on my previous devices that I sometimes would have to do an immediate factory reset after flashing.
Well that did crap. FCs are random. The device is stuck booting now after a hot reboot.
How can I debug this? What do I need to grab from a logcat? Is there a way to run something like memtest to see if there is a bad section of RAM and something against storage to see if there is a bad sector?
This is frustrating as hell!
