This little gem of a phone is a tough little thing to custom install apps on, but that didn't stop the Coburn from being able to get busybox installed.
Therefore, introducing Busybox for your HTC Click/Tattoo!
FOLLOW THIS TUTORIAL CAREFULLY. This guide may brick or NOT brick your Tattoo (most likely the latter), however I cannot assure you that it's 100% fail proof. I have installed it successfully. IN OTHER WORDS: THIS IS NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED! IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT 'FLASH','ADB' OR 'HACK' MEANS, PLEASE DO NOT CONTINUE.
Requirements:
1 HTC Tattoo (The Victim)
1 MS Windows Powered Computer (I used Win7 64Bit)
1 HTC Tattoo -> USB Cable (Included with phone... Well, it was in the box).
Download the package attached to this post. Extract all files to a directory like C:\BUSYCLICK . (Actually, please extract them there).
Installation
Connect your Tattoo to your phone, make sure USB Debugging is enabled (Settings -> Applications -> Development) and sit back. Windows should say "New Hardware! OMG!" and ask "What is this piece of tech?" (aka New Hardware Install Wizard). On XP, allow to search Windows Update. On Vista/7, I'm going to have to get back to you on that. The installed driver will be like "HTC Dream blah blah blah ADB Interface" or something. Odd why it says it's a HTC Dream...
Anyway, go to the folder where you extracted the files, and run the Installation.bat file. It's the one that says "Installation" With the cogs icon.
You'll get a DOS Prompt and some text, PAY ATTENTION! My installer will hold your hand and explain what's happening. Should any errors occur, you may be out of space on your Tattoo's internal memory or something. If you do get errors, please post them here! I'll try to fix them for you guys and girls.
Post-install tasks
When complete, run the TestBusybox.bat script in the same folder where you extracted the BusyBox files, and you should get some output. If not, busybox failed to install... Let me know what the error is and I'll try to fix it.
Notes:
You can use the busybox commands in /data/local/bin from "adb shell" or a terminal emulator on the phone itself... /data/local/bin/sh DOES NOT work from adb shell, I don't know why. It will work using a terminal emulator. Try "/data/local/bin/free" and such for some memory read outs, etc, etc.
Feel free to love/like/hate/kill/shoot my work, you can expect to see ROMs and the like in the near future as I love hacking devices.

I do see /data/local and under tho... including ../bin and ../rights but dont see any use of it...

All this does is allows you to run more commands from the shell in Android, whereas the standard shell doesn't have many commands built-in. Could be used in conjuction with a root hack.

Busybox just allows you to use more features at the adb shell command line. So, yeah. Heh.

That code is old, and apparently won't work. It won't compile either, Paul from Modaco tried it and it just spat the dummy and gave a make error.

That's the code for the old asroot exploit (used in the Hero IIRC). It's been patched in August/09 so it won't affect the kernel in stock Tattoos.
Yeah, that's what I was getting at - the exploit is too old.
We need to either:
1) Get a S-OFF bootloader
2) Find another working root exploit
3) Dig around in the test ROM and extract the SU binary out of that sucker and put it in /data/local on the working ROM.
I think I can do the latter.

First of all, Linux and OS X come with sqlite3 by default. Windows users will need to download the executable. With that said, here is how you can enable sideloading the old-fashioned way.

If I am not mistaken gdanko doesnt use any of those operating systems. He uses a mac...

I guess the check box is not added, but superoneclick did do its job. The phone is communicating with the laptop as expected.

Fails on Ubuntu 64. And installing mono and a host of other things for something so trivial is pointless.

There's several threads on the first page of the development forum (which you found as you're posting in it) that contain the information you need. One of the threads is even clearly labeled: "[HOWTO] Easy Root 1.5.7 using GingerBreak"
So sorry, I get a little short with people who ask questions that are already answered. Don't take it personally. Here's the breakdown:
There's currently 2 methods of root, one is GladRoot, which requires you to downgrade first. The other is GingerBreak, which formats your phone data. Pick your poison.
Works on any Atrix, rooted, deodexed, stock, doesn't matter!!

Okay currently rooted with Adeo already assuming unroot before applying this script, but as far as Adeo I understand it doesn't need to be rooted for the install but if its already there would i have any problems swapping the root method?

pretty easy...
adb shell
cd /system/xbin
ls -l
you should only have a handful of files, no busybox, or any symlinks to it.

Has to be the problem, I was on my laptop with XP loaded. Like I said, the script did the trick but just sqawked an error. I am on my 7 tablet now and the command works fine.

I second that. XP here and got the TIMEOUT error, but worked just fine. Double checked my system/xbin and no busybox or symlink.
just looked it up, sure enough xp doesn't support that, oh well, doesn't matter, adb will wait for the device to some online, I might just take it out.

It is possible that is the problem. Unless you are doing command line stuff you will be fine. It won't just brick you for no reason.

movesu.sh is now backup.sh, yes?
Also busybox "mv /system/xbin/su /system/bin/frozenfish" clobbers the copy from system/bin, if there is a difference, i thought it was generally a symlink to /system/bin.
Other than that, good idea in renaming the binary file, I probably won't use frozenfish in case Motorola targets that now..

Whoops - I based it from adeo without making the proper changes. Corrected one should be live in a few minutes.

and the missing /bin folder :X .. well technically you just need psneuter in there.. and just change the /bin/psneuter.. to /psneuter saves you time lol

This doesn't come bundled with a copy of su, it uses the one already installed in the system.

Verify the file is in place w/correct permissions

After the ls command you should see the following returned by the system:
-rwsr-sr-x root root 26248 2011-05-29 01:09 su
At this point, you may way to remove the files you put in /data/local/temp (optional):
#rm /data/local/temp/su
#rm /data/local/temp/rage
continue with commands
#reboot

Just a note for some. The rageagainstthecage bin file may be detected as a virus/trojan. It is not. You may want to disable your antivirus before downloading the .bin file.
I run avira on my desktop and it caught the file as a virus everytime I downloaded it and then deleted it. Avast on my laptop however did not.
Root is simple if you follow the instructions. You need to make sure that adb recognizes your device. Takes 5 minutes to complete, took me longer to install adb again and update it.

No idea. I have not used the one click. Create a thread for it. I posted what I know which is adb.
Successfully Rooted
with RootzWiki instructions for Windows, needed the remount and busybox lines to overcome the permission denied when pushing su.
Hey guys, either using S1C or ADB Commands, have we found out if it's possible to unroot this as long as you Nand Backup the stock rom then unroot from there yet? Just because I got this phone as a filler/4g unl. lock and got buyback on it from best buy so I could buy a dual/quad later on when they come out .

Doing a factory reset I believe will unroot you. There is no nand back up at this time. We are waiting for a recovery mod.

Oh ya I know, I just always keep a stock one, on the Inc if you factory reset from an AOSP rom, you'd bootloop, so you had to make sure you were on a Sense 1.0 or stock rom(from my experience), so I was just making sure it was no big deal to go back.
Any idea when we will have cw on this?

That's what i figured. Can anyone verify if you remove SU and Rage through adb will it unroot?

If you have to return your device, simply remove the superuser app, after you unfreeze anything you may have frozen then factory reset. They honestly will never know it was rooted. The only way now that you can really tell is the super user app from market.
Just so everyone knows. SuperOneClick can root and unroot this phone ok.

Cool thanks for checking. Any benefits for ADB over S1C? Can't wait to finally root and freeze half these apps. I think we need a few more twitters to praise koush for a recovery on this beast.

No No, I was saying we need to praise Koush's good work so he will make one faster .
And Stetsonaw, any idea if I root through ADB, can I unroot with S1C, since it uses the same idea.
S1C for whatever reason will not run(tried three computers, a XP, Vista, and Win7 lol), it keeps freezing at the same spot, everytime.
Should be able to, since S1C does what the ADB method does... or you could just delete the 'su' file out of /system/bin and /system/xbin (if it's there) to unroot.
EDIT: I couldn't get S1C to open on my desktop, and my laptop, which would open the program, would bluescreen when i connected the phone, so i had no choice but to do it the ADB way.

Hmmm, ya now my computer for whatever reason won't open up ADB through command. This is getting irritating lol. Should be nice and simple, but it just won't go through. If I downloaded the SDK Manager like 4 months ago, it shouldn't matter, correct?
make sure you change directory to wherever your adb.exe is located... as in:

I'm rooted and am trying to mount the system to remove bloatware apps... However everytime Titanium Backup removes it and I reboot it's still there...

System is protected: you can't modify it while the phone is booted. You'll have to make a zip or whatever to delete it in recovery.

The recovery flashed but wouldnt boot , managed to get round it when i discovered POB with his superboot Thank god for the desire C
Then i realised that i couldnt flash anything because I manged to install 6.0.2.8 as a boot img, and 6.0.3.0 as a proper recovery.
Then i didnt have any files on the device to flash boohoo so i managed to get ADB sideload working through the AIO One Toolkit... And managed to flash AHRD finally getting a working device,
As you see Im a seasoned vet at these things but the HTC One has been the first device that has stumped me....

The apps issue is not unkwown for HTC however they havent done this for a while.... Back with the G2 they did exactly the same thing and yes ive frozen them but there should be away to remove system apps for us through root.... But i cant remember how, Throwing it into ADB Shell and requesting SU along with a Remount works fine but still would like to remove the apps.
Im also looking for someone with a locked phone... (Sim Locked) i have a theory and it worked on the Desire C Anyone wanna help?

Delete the apps with titanium and power off the phone. Don't do a restart.

You need to flash a custom kernel with a modified ramdisk to disable system protection Without doing that you're like deleting an app on windows with deepfreeze on it
Is that the only solution?
There are so many bloated useless and intrusive (cr)apps on this phone it's unbelievable.
Other solution is boot in recovery and delete it there. Either thru adb while in recovery mode, flashable zip or through file manager(if you're using TWRP). Other than that nope

the joys of a s-on devices
read up on adb commands...
or use the zip I attached and edit line 18 in this format with the apps you want to get rid of, use a file explorer to get the proper names.
make a backup first in case you mess up something

I dont have a One, and dont plan on having one (ever, thanks to this thread! I think I'll stick to Sony, they have instructions to unlocking bootloader on their official website)
BUT, if the system is locked, it should be locked trough ADB too, so I guess what I'd try is install busybox, custom recovery, go into recovery, connected it to the PC (or a mac, but since we're on no-apple forum, I'll assume PC), mounting system there and doing your thing.
You can install busybox and custom recovery right?
Edit: never mind, I should really learn to read. Sometimes I think I'm dyslexic a little, just for words, not letters.
I did not see the 'recovery' part mentioned.
Anywho, mounting system is what you forgot, so at least I said something helpful
