dumb me or computer - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK im tired of looking i am trying to load a new rom but coming into some wierd issues and cant seem to find a solution i do a wipe then do a fat32/ext3/swap format right from my boot loader screen. then pull my battery pull my memory card stick into my computer. but here is where the problem starts my computer says the card isnt formatted and wants to reformat but with no partions. i have been hunting for sometime now and cant seem to figuire it out. please help i know this is probaly easy for most but i have no clue.

Have you tried another sd card? Is your card reader locked(SD card reader)? Do you have any FAT32 memory on the sd card?

i am trying a new memory card right now, my card reader isn't locked and i don't believe there is any fat32 memory left on it.

What recovery image are you using? Some of them will allow you to mount the sd card whilst in your phone as it is in recovery mode (home+power). If you have one that allows you to do that you can format the card and just plug your phone in to the computer and transfer what you need that way.

Well thanks for your great input. How could i have gone on so long without your guidance. i love people like you who get all high and mighty on their computers and think cause some one isn't so knowledgeable as you are that they shouldn't really be in an area that you coincide. Well i sure hope there may not be some matter of your life where i might be able to actually help you cause my good will and natural wanting to help my fellow man, might inspire you to either look at yourself and wanna change for the best or go jump off a bridge cause you realize that you may never change.

Thanks i haven't tried that and honestly i couldn't tell you which recovery image i have. I had someone root my phone for me cause i didn't feel i was up for the task.

This is the last time I'll ever try to help you out.
Get off your "bill gayes is god" box and accept that you need to use the RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB.
MS is OPENLY HOSTILE to everything that is NOT MS.
And you are trying to make a filesystem layout that is a hybrid of MS and NOT-MS.
It asks you to format filesystems because it is DESIGNED TO DESTROY EVERYTHING that is NOT MS.
The solution: Don't use MS!!!

What's a "linex"?
(I know, that was a typo... linux.)
But AAAAHHH, holy crap! There sure shouldn't be.
Note: The answer is that there is TONS of linux in Windoze.... Including big long branches of code stolen verbatim. It is totally illegal and is a strict violation of the GPL license protecting the linux source code.
Once in a while we get PROOF that MS has stolen linux code... and it results in a complicated set of denials, but ultimately MS is forced to comply with the GPL license in these cases.

How safe is data on MicroSD/SDHC?

Every once in a while I'm having the same sort of problem whith my storage card, whether it's MiniSD, MicroSD or SDHC. To be more precise some/all files disappear leaving nothing but some bloody FILE*.CHK files, which seem to be completely useless. I did some google-search and there seems to be no practical way of retrieving the lost data.
I'm curious: why is it happening in the first place and has anyone been successful in combatting this issue? (don't tell me about backups )
I have yet to have a problem with the mem card in my Kaiser. it is a 6Gb Sandisk. Do you have an off-brand?
My old HTC Sable had issues like you describe...
arent .chk files left over by scandisk on a windows box?
this could be due to not ejecting the hardware before removing it from the pc!
under what circumstances are you experiencing this
Yes when combatting this issue I find that handguns are useless and shotguns are all the rage. When trying to do the official combat I like to taunt the problem a bit with the pistol (which just makes it mad) and then go all out with the shot gun. It's always good to have someone else at your side with a missle launcher or something, ya know, for the hardcore combat.
.CHK files are recovered file fragments from Scandisk. I would try a low level format of your SD card and then reformat as FAT32 (for the love of ____, do not use NTFS). NTFS is not designed for removable media and will give you nothing but headaches.
How do you low level an SD card. You only really hear about that with SCSI drives now days, Or do you mean a full format?
im not sure that the post that says dont format ur sd card as ntfs is accurate, while it may be true that a windows mobile device will probably not recognise this disc at all, i use an sd card formatted as ntfs in a laptop with no problems!
try hdtune @ www.hdtune.com/ this might be useful!

You can use an SD card reader with a PC and use a program such as Boot/Nuke to do a DoD-certified erase of the contents.

You can format removable media with NTFS, but you need to be extremely careful since NTFS is constantly caching data from the drive. Unless you disable write-back caching or eject the card each time prior to removing it (which cannot be done on a phone), you run a high risk of corrupting the data on it.
The problem with NTFS on removable media seems to be a windows issue. Not sure if that is windows mobile as well but it also seems to be fixed in a service pack. If I were having problems I wouldn't be using something with user rights and permissions on a device that does nothing with that.

Forgot to mention when trying to fix this I used the windows disc-check utility, but initially problem started after I installed one of the games (Tomb Rider I think) and the battery power was down to 2-3% when I turned my Kaiser off. I couldn't access the programm files folder from ppc, and it was empty when I opened it on pc...except there was tombrider.exe left...

Hmmm, interestingly it doesn't display the file system in the properties menu like it would for the hard drives... but I'm pretty sure I didn't format the card...unless was formatted NTFS when first inserted in a device...

If you didn't format it, then it would be FAT32 formatted by default.

You installed the games in the MicroSD, right?
I experienced it twice, sorted out that it happens when I'm using an application that installed in the MicroSD and then turned the device off. The strange thing that it is only occurred when using a large sized and resource extensive application (especially games), it doesn't happen when using light application such as YahooGo!, MapKing, etc. I end up to install all apps in main memory, and lived peacefully (finger crossed)
I hoped someone could explain why this happen, even better cured it

Actually you still can save your files, it still there just with mixed up name and extention
1. Sort the file by it's file size, you could get an idea what file it was by it's size
2. Change the file extention according to what you think it supposed to be judging by its size, ie:
small file to *.txt and open it with notepad, read what's in it and change it to what it's supposed to be .pwi, .xls, etc
2 - 6 MB files to *.mp3
etc
I know it's painful especially with my 2GB data, also you cannot saved your application this way, but I saved my most recent and important data this way, for the rest I just have to satisfy with my 1 month old backup
If anyone could suggest better way, pleaseee let me know
Just happen again
[email protected]!!! me and my big mouth... it just happen again this morning, same thing, install app in storage card, device turned off and wham!
But this time I did some googling and found this utility really helpfull
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download
Well, anyone could explain what caused it and how to prevent it?
Any information will be appreciated
Thanks

Yes mate! Sounds very much like what happened here - after intstalling Tomb Rider (4-6MB) in the MicroSD I launched it and then soft reset - my program files vanished...And I dont think I could do anything about that, the .CHK files I got after running the checkdisc utility were all the same size - 32kb, something to do with the cluster size I think...
I guess the question of the cause and the way to prevent it remains open...
Bump
No one can help?

Yes, slower than a normal card reader, but 10 times faster than ActiveStink.
But calculate the time it takes to power your phone down, remove the card, stick it in a normal card reader, transfer files as needed, put it back in the phone, power back up.
With Card Export, I click on an app button and plug into my pooter.
Some of us are even geeky enough to have the flash card bootable.
Mine loads BartPE, and has all of the Windows XP Source files on it, so I can now boot any system, perform maintenance on it using the BartPE image and utilities, and even reinstall Windows XP Pro from my phone.
I do IT work for a living.

Too much information, as in, irrelevant to the thread? Or too much information, as in "Whoah Nellie! You ARE a geek, and it blows my mind!"
In short, to answer the OP's initial question.
YES. You can use the HTC Kaiser/AT&T Tilt/Orange/anything else it is sold under, as a USB flash drive for a PC, by using a program that you install on the phone.
WM5Storage does not work for me. It will not load the card as usable. I ended up using CardExport, and paid for it. I love it.

Card Export is payware. It is worth the money, for as often as I use it. No crack.
They just require that you have an Owner Name set on your device. The Owner Name has to match the name used to register it to receive a key.
Card export installs a universal usb driver that it installs to your device and utilizes. I use it and it works on every machine I've tried it on. It's a very good program and worth paying for.
wm5torage is similar software but does not include a driver... either you have it or you don't (hence it sometimes doesn't work)

Trying to root my G1 but SD can't be read

Hi everyone. I just joined this forum and I am hoping to get some help from some wise jailbreaker out there..
I bought my G1 from T-Mobile a couple of weeks ago with the intent to jailbreak it and use it as a modem for my laptop. I finally got started on the project and I was stonewalled right from the get-go. Neither the original SD card in the phone nor my new 8GB SD card can be seen by either one of my computers. My desktop is running Windows XP Pro and my laptop is running Vista Home Premium. Neither one will see the SD card no matter what I do. The card does not show up in "My Computer" on either one of the systems, but shows up as "Drive J" in both of them under "Drive Mangement". But it says there is "No Media", so therefor nothing to format.
Since I can't even format the card, I am bogged down from the start. I am hoping someone out there can tell me what to do in order to jailbreak this phone, since that was the only reason I got it. I was perfectly happy with my HP6550 iPAQ otherwise...
Has anyone out there had the same problem?
have u tried formating the card to fat32?
You could try a sd reader. When you pluggin the phone in did you make sure to pull down the notification bar and click the usb thing and hit "Mount"?
Try going into settings, sdcard and storage and format the card that way. If not it sounds like a windows driver issue, you might want to try a card reader, or download and burn a live cd of linux something like ubuntu which will have no problem reading the android phone. You could also use hp as a card reader if it supports micro sdcards
You could just download the files you need through the internet on your phone also, I do all my flashing, downloading and modifing right on my g1, download something like linda or astro file manager from the market so that you can actually download the files
Thanks guys.
pistol4413: That is what I am trying to do according to instructions. But without the card beeing seen by Windows, it is sort of hard to format it...
crpercodani: Thanks for the tip. I will try a separate card reader. And there was no need to hit "mount". It all happened automatically and the phone said the card was mounted. Well, not in those words but it said the card was connected. I tried to unmount and remount again. Didn't do anything.
gridlock32404: I tried that (formatting in the phone). It did nothing. I will try a separate reader. The HP doesn't support micro SD, only mini and standard.
And I can't believe it would be a Windows driver issue both in my XP Pro system and Vista Premium...?
Provided I get this solve first of course, I am also curious if you might have detailed, reliable instructions on how to go through the whole root thing and getting the phone rooted and setup to provide a wireless network for my laptop? Right now I am following instructions from Anthony Moreno on YouTube. He has a few instructional videos on there that seem to make sense. But if any of you know of some other source for instructions, please let me know. I'd appreciate any help I can get to make this a smooth project and not a major headache...
There are many detailed posts and stickys, on this q and a there is a thread for the one click that is really good, it is written by david and is very good instructions
Thanks for the mention gridlock32404. I have a detailed guide in my sig for the one click method. Or if you search for root/hack g1 then there is a good guide that i used to root my phone back in the day. If you use my method and encounter any problems pm me because i will see that faster than a post in the thread also if you do it and go with the rom in the guide (latest cyanogen rom) it comes with a tether app to do exactly what want (at least i think it does)
They are good instructions david and I think that it is warranted to get sticky since most of the new g1 users are using it, I would perfer them to do the old fashioned way so they learn more about what they are doing but the one click is bringing a lot of new users to rooting since it is less scary

As long as you power your phone down first i can't see any why your sdcard would get damaged.
That's what I thought, so I guess I will do that tomorrow then or monday
You should tell them you will partition their sdcards and install the new spl, if they leave a mytouch on the table and look away lol.
It's a mytouch and a g1. The g1 guy wants hero so I would set that all up for him. Why do you say that about the mytouch, it's gonna be my first go on that so I am unsure

The mytouch was a joke payment method. To do one click root on the mytouch make sure you put the 1.33.2005 spl on it, since any spl for the g1 (hard or eng) will brick it. Also you might want to get the amon_ra recovery image for the mytouch
Yeah I was planning to put the amon's recovery on their since they can't use the recovery console anyway, I was aware of the spl difference though so I was good on that, I did read up alittle on it

to much to ask?

Okay, so what are you saying? You formatted your SD card and it doesn't work or something? Did you format it as FAT32 under Windows? Did you rename the file to HERAIMG.nbh? Did you press and hold the camera button? Im thinking that you didn't.
If you're trying to flash through sd, and it's not working, you either missed something or did something wrong, period.
LOL
I can;t take you seriously with the smoking obama
You Must Be HardSPL First! See Here
1. Download the ROM you want to Flash
2. Rename the _______.nbh to HERAIMG.nbh ( ____ being whatever it was named first )
3. Format your sd card in FAT32 ( can't be sdhc, smaller cards work better )
- you can format your sd with a card reader on your computer
- or you can find resco explorer and format it on your phone
- if either doesn't work skip this step and see what happens
4. Place the HERAIMG.nbh onto your hopefully reformatted sd card. ( keep it in the root directory don't put it in a folder)
5. Make sure your phone is off and your sd card is in
6. Press and hold the power button and while holding it press and hold the camera button
7. When asked to press a button press down on the volume strip.
8. you'll get a progress bar leave it alone until there's only a gradient screen ( around 5min) then restart.
If for some reason this doesn't work, start back at step one and try again.
If for some reason the second time doesn't work get a cheap sd card and try with that one.

hey guys i covered that in my steps give me some credit.
and about the passthrough. i have a dash and when you connect to the computer my dash uses my computers internet, im wondering why i can;t do that with my wing?
the thing is i have a 2g sd card now i have heard of the term "partioning" a portion of your sd card for flashing.does anyone have steps for it? thats what i might need and if that doesnt work i'll just wait for the next signed_ruu file through active sync.
You can try to partition your SD and have part of it FAT or NTFS and the other FAT32 for flashing purposes, but I would not recommend it. Just do this, connect your SD card to your PC some way, copy everything on it to your desktop, then format the card to FAT32 and install as normal. If you partition your card I do not know wether the bootloader of the phone is smart enough to search for a FAT32 partition or if it expects the entire sd:/ disk to be FAT32.
I've never tried partitioning. I always use a 2gb Kingston and format the entire card to FAT32, and I've never had any issues flashing. That is the method I recommend.

[Q] USB Host support(solved)

Does nook color have usb host support??
Has anybody tested it?
If not, is any body working on it coz hardware definitely supports at least usb 1.3.
Edit: the applications are endless
usb drives, external hdd, internet data cards depnding on drivers avaliblity u can attach any hardware and ditch ur notebook.
EDIT 2 : Verygreen has it working
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bovg4aBFnA8
I can't thank you enough for this green, i wanted this really bad, that's why decided to look into it too(that didn't work out too well though).
Don't believe it supports it. No idea if anyone is working on it either, but I know id definitely want it.

Looking at the nook color teardown, it seems the nook has a chipset which SHOULD support USB OTG, but it would required the drivers and OS supporting it as well.
Personally I think bluetooth support will be the closest we'll get (at least for quite a while)

What would you do with it, beside a keyboard and a mouse?
I'd rather have bluetooth instead of usb host support.
I'd like to be able to ditch my laptop while running around the Gulf of Mexico. Between helicopter weight limits and the limits of what I can carry swinging from boats to platforms. Less is more. Id like to carry my nook and ext. Hard drive for movies.

btw, those eager to try external keyboard already can give it a try with all the BT progress made by fattire (the real hero).
Since I want to stay on the safe side myself, I compiled this 2G SD image that you can boot into and have working bluetooth (keyboard and external audio confirmed working). Of course use at your own risk and such:
htt p:// handhelds.ru/nook/2g_bt_card_image.img.gz
go to settings -> wireless & networks
make sure that bluetooth is enabled and then you can explore and pair devices in "bluetooth settings" there.
Range so far is in the area of 13", so usable for a keyboard at least.

May i ask about this image... is it Froyo or Gingerbread (CM7)? Working BT sounds great, but a bit more info couldn't hurt..

Ah, sorry, did not mention it.
It's CM7 from yesterday with bt patches applied on top (they were committed later on after I tested that they worked).
BTW, it's the image used by IOMonster in that video from yesterday that you referenced in the BT progress thread (I just don't have enough posts to actually post to dev forum I originally wanted to reference it there sine it seems people are eager to play with thing at least somewhat).

I think it would be useful for a wide testing if you post the link in the dev thread about bt work.
and I am sure tons of people are waiting to get their hands on this.
1.86GB .img doesnt fit on 1.84GB SD Card...bummer.

just write what fits and then reformat 4th partition as fat.
the fat partition is empty anyway.
that way you can even write to 1g sdcard if you must, the fat sdcard partition would just be really small.
Since I cannot still post in development forum, for those who try the image and it does not work, I had some problems if you d oa soft reboot from other image into SD.
Try powering off your nook and then booting from SD.
Also if that did not work, you might want to change /system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini
(you need to remount /system read-write first of course)
look for BThWlanCoexistEnable = 2 line
change it to BThWlanCoexistEnable = 1
save the file
power off the nook again and then turn it back on and boot from SD.

I only have a 1Gb card handy right now so that would be great, what the best way to right that? Would Win32DiskImager do the job for writing? Not sure about the reformating part though. Thanks !

I am not familiar with windows tools, sorry.
I imagine whatever you use to write the image will just write as much as it can and then abort
after this happens, start a tool you use to manage partitions on windows (volume manager? I dunno, used to be fdisk in DOS and Windows95 days).
point it at the SD card.
Tell it to delete the last partition.
Then tell it to create another partition on SD card that would span the rest of the free space and set the type to fat.
If a separate format is required, I imagine there would be a way to then format this new partition.
Thanks, will try that and see what happens.

This would be great for me once someone get video working properly (no audio delay). Right now I would have to reencode all the video I have which is too much work.
