Google Voice and +1 dialing - Touch CDMA Android Development

First off, thank you to everyone who has had a hand in making Android on Vogue a reality. Amazing work.
I've spent some time researching failed outbound calls in GV, and as best I can tell the problem does not lie within GV, but is a limitation of the dialer. I'm noticing that all outbound calls to "+1" numbers fail on my device. As GV outbound calls are to +1 numbers, they always fail. Are others experiencing this, and if so could you please list carrier information?
I am using a Vogue with Warm Donut on Alltel.
Finally, is it possible that this is a radio issue? Is anyone having success with +1 dialing?

I have had the same experience.
Instead of using the Google Voice app for dialing out, I use "GV Dialer" from Android Market. Very reliable. Works 100% of the time with no problems.
Hope that helps...

I tried this also. My question is: Is there any way to use GV for all calls by default, but then to use GV for a specific #? When I call my mom, I want it to be Sprint to Sprint so I can't use GV.

I have had the problem with the "Voice" app from google for a while as well. not so sure that it is connected to the +1 dialing, as I've found sometimes just dialing again (sometimes it takes 5 tries) allows it to go through. a reboot ALWAYS allows it to function, at least for me. others noted that using plemen's old build that set build.prop to mimic T-mobile G1 broke "Voice" from working at all; I'm wondering if using market enabler will do this as well. not the whole story, though, as this has occurred to me since I stopped using market enabler a week ago.
berardi, "Voice" from google has a widget that with one click cycles through the different calling options (all calls GV, only international, no calls, etc). not ideal, but it works. it is under shortcuts rather than widgets, though, called "toggle google voice".

Yes, you are correct about the +1 dialing being the problem. I am on USCC and I cannot dial any +1 numbers, so this is a showstopper for using the GV app. Seems to me that there should be an option in its setting to use the prefix or not.
The solution is this: Check the market for an app called "GVMyNumber". It integrates well with the GV app, except when you go to place a GV call, this app dials your own GV number and goes thru the prompts. It is the best app for doing this that I have tried.

I think I still disagree. +1 dialing is not the whole problem. Tested again this pm, probably dialed 12 times in a row that failed, with a restart in the middle (apparently restarts don't always fix the problem), then two calls in a row that went through fine. ALL calls including the last two had +1, so that is not the whole story. Yes, dialing Google voice to dial out always works so programs that use that are a great workaround.

You might be right that the +1 is not the entire issue. However, I tried this a couple times: I dialed the GV access number manually, without the +1, and my previously attempted call would then go through.
I had originally thought this was a carrier specific problem, but now I'm definitely rethinking that. I am not optimistic of finding a workaround, other than using 3rd party apps.

I tried loading GVMyNumber.apk and get a message "could not be installed on this phone".
I am running Myn's Donut v1.6.
It appears this app has a minimum requirement of Eclair Android 2.0 and above.
Hopefully they update it to support earlier versions of Android.

short-term solution
I stumbled upon a program in the market. Called "GV" that will use either dialing patterns or the callback method. It works great, it's free, and it appears the developer is now distributing the code on his website.

if running with the kernel on NAND, you just flash the .nbh for teh resolution you want; it will change your kernel only, everything else won't be touched.

Hello PeopleHelper,
I did exactly as you said and it did not work for me.
Did a fresh install of Myn's Rlse4 (Android v1.6) this morning using the "myn-WarmDonut-03-16-2010-320x480-160.zip" file.
Yes, everything looks a lot smaller.
Then open up the GVMyNumber apk to install it.
I then get a message "Application not installed -- GVMyNumber could not be installed on this phone"
Any other ideas?
I prefer this app over FlexDialer because after you are done with calls, the phone log shows the person's number you called instead of a call log full of my GoogleVoice phone number.
Thanks for any help!

GV App Update (Google Voice App)

Evan Charlton released a big update to his awesome app for those of us lucky enough to have Google Voice accounts, go grab it!
Hopefully this is appropriate for this forum, if not, sorry, I just wanted to tell anyone else who has been waiting for an update like me!
Tommy
The release notes and documentation can be found here:
http://docs.evancharlton.com/docs/GV
Updating early this morning and I can't say I'm too happy with it. It keeps getting stuck at the setup screen and I can't get into the actual application. The only way I've been able to send an SMS through it is by removing the native Messaging app from default and using Contacts to send an SMS. Only then do I get an option to send through GV.

reboot your g1 and that fixes the settings screen getting stuck. I ran into this problem as well.
Only issue i'm having now is dialing out a number takes a long time, > 30secs even with pin turned off.

Still didn't fix it. I'm going to try uninstalling and reinstalling.
Edit: Still busted. I'm at a complete loss as what to try next.
Edit 2: Wow I feel stupid. I emailed Evan for help and got this:

filled in. If you're running the latest version from the Market, any
setting with a "*" in front of it has not yet been filled in.

I didn't bother filling in the entry for Google PIN because I selected not to use it but the software still checks to make sure it's filled in. It's like an idiot filter and I failed miserably.

Probably not worth blaming yourself for that one. Sounds like the software isn't that clear. If it doesn't need the pin, it shouldn't need to check for it.
Has it stopped working for anyone since the newest update?
GV calls failing with error message
GV stopped working for me after the latest update a few days back. All attempts at outbound calls result in a message that says "The cost of this call is 4 cents a minute" followed by disconnect beeps. Unsure of whats going on. Maybe google changed something on him.
Would love to get it working again, just made the switch to routing all calls through GV after the previous update and then this one comes out and I lost all connectivity.
Good news is that you can download all previous versions from the link a couple of posts above. I'm trying it now.
GV working for me again...
It appears that GV is now working again. From what I've seen the failures are intermittent across all versions. I'm guessing Google is fiddling with things on their end and temporarily killing Evan's app.
Wonder if they're making their own...
GV seemed to hurt performance
I was a big fan of his GrandCentral app. When he made the GV v2 app, I was looking forward to lots of functionality which it has, but it always seemed to severely degrade my phone's UI responsiveness and when it really got bad, I would get Force Close/Wait windows for GV.
I've unloaded it and am waiting for another big release to try it again.
I found a change log with download links on his website: http://evancharlton.com/projects/gv/
Apparently that error has been corrected.

Now I get this error:
USSD Code Running.....

$.04 a minute crap is back again.
Well... after committing to routing all my calls through GV and having GREAT SUCCESS!!! for about a week the dreaded "The cost of this call is 4 cents a minute" - BEEP BEEP BEEP is back again.
Had to stop routing all calls through GV to ensure I'm not missing any important calls. This is very frustrating as I love the app and really love cutting down on costs. Can't wait until GV is 100% stable. I still think Evan's app is not the problem, rather Google fiddling with something on their end which in turn breaks GV.
Anyone who has further insight throw your two cents in here.
On a side note, I wonder if Evan is aware of XDA-DEV? Wonder if we'd be of any help to him, or if he'd be a good contributor here.
" $.04 a minute crap is back again".
is that local calls or long distance out of country?
I've had zero troubles with GV; it's more than likely GOOG is doing something with their code.
GV error...
.04 cents a minute is happening for local calls within my home area code. I'm nearly certain its Google's fault... wonder if this is a sign they're working on mobile client as well?
I'm an idiot.
Finally figured out whats happening with the error I metioned earlier in this post. The 4 cents a minute error happens when I try to call a contact that doesn't have an area code in the number. For instance 456-7890 instead of 123-456-7890 triggers the error.
Overall the GV app is great. Very stable and full of great features. Two things I'd like to see. Support for a search function in contacts is a big one. Integration of my GV contacts with my other google account contacts is another. The former is on Evan to develop. The latter is all Google and I hope they hurry up with that.
Also - just discovered that GV has some widget features in the new Hero theme, never saw them before, not sure if they were there or not.
Official Google Voice App?
Looks like Google INC. Just rolled out a google voice application on the market
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.google.android.apps.googlevoice
EDIT: woot just got GV invite!
And it looks like they are going to offer voip callout too. The S is about to hit the fan in regards to Google's relationship with carriers.
This is a bigger deal than Chrome OS imo.

google voice+ gv help please!!

How do I make calls form my headset with out it having to call me back first, you know like a regular cellphone, i know it can be done because i followed instructions from a thread on this which i can no longer find. ive tried clicking call through in gv but that doesn't work, can someone help pls. thanx in advanced
I know that the official Google Voice app does direct dial without ringback. Maybe you want to transition to that app instead.
as for the unofficial GV app, i'm not sure.

google voice

Hey guys, I was wondering if there was a googlevoice workaround to activate the account on the gtab. It wants to send a txt msg but ofcorse it can't send one cause its not a phone. I've setup slipdroid but it wont register but shows my account when I go to pbx.org was wondering if maybe cause my googlevoice account on this tab couldn't finish setting up. Thanks
Matt
you have to update to the newest release then there is no problems
To follow up on what b3ltazar said, you may need to do the market fix in order to see google voice in the market. After the fix you will see google voice and can do the update. It will work after doing the update.
I have the new market. Running vegan 5.1 I tried the market fix but for some reason I never have and cashe when I got to allocations. Manage and tap on market. Why is this? Google voice is no where to be found in my market. Does anyone have the apk?
Thanks

I have it working... The workaround was to take the google voice on my phone, make a Titanium backup, copy those files over to the tab, and restore through Titanium backup as well. Afterwords, when you start voice, it walks you through the setup process and when it gets to the part trying to find the phone just back out of everything.
I've done this a couple times and it worked pretty well. You can text IF you have a google voice number.
Good luck!

That isn't really necessary anymore. Just update to the latest in the market, make sure the phone number you choose in Google voice has been added to your Google voice account, and text away...
If you don't see it in the market. Then you need to study up on market fixes. It is there in my market using vegaN Beta 5.1 and works fine. I use it everyday to talk to my kids..
I have it and it works great. Love texting from my g tablet

Slightly off-topic: Google Voice, and voice calls from Gtab, and in general?
Hi,
I have a Gmail and Google Voice account, and I guess that one thing that I've never quite understood is what Google Voice is, or is suppose to do, esp. vis-a-vis voice calls.
When I first got signed up for it, and when I'm in Google Voice (on a PC), I know that I can initiate a "voice call", but from what I can tell, the way that that works is that when you do a voice call from Google Voice, you tell it the number that you want to call (the "called number"), then Google Voice calls that called number, and calls you back on your REGULAR phone number. In other words, if the number that I have configured in Google Voice for myself is xxx-xxx-xxxx, when I initiate a call to yyy-yyy-yyyy, I get an incoming call on xxx-xxx-xxxx.
Then, awhile ago, Google announced that you could call from your Gmail account, and I was really surprised when I tried that. When I was in Gmail, I initiated a call to xxx-xxx-xxxx, and, I was able to talk to the called party ON MY PC, i.e., kind of like a "Skype out" phone call.
So, now that I have my Gtab, I was wondering: Is it possible to do the latter thing from my Gtab, i.e., to call a real phone number (xxx-xxx-xxxx) from my Gtab, and talk to that real phone via my Gtab, totally over Wifi on my end?
I've seen some posts and info about setting up sipdroid and pbx something or other, but I'm wondering if it's possible to do with just some combination of Google Voice app and Gmail app on the Gtab?
Thanks,
Jim
What version of Google Voice works for stock rom?
I have the same problem as many in this and 2 other threads.
Unable to get Google voice app to fully install. Does it only install / work on an UNstock gtab?
I can go to google voice in the browser and sent and receive texts, fine. But of course then you get no notification when messages come in.
As I said, I am runnning stock gtab, no mods. I was able to search and found Google voice in the gmarket but it gave me choices to sms or download to phone, or pc. I chose PC.
I click on install and at the screen where it asks for number confirmation, I select my cell phone, it returns error can not verify the number. (it is the same number I used to originally setup the gvoice on pc). I can not get past the voicemail setup page either, skip doesn't work and then back won't work and I am locked up.
There are so many great threads on this forum, but it seems many repeated questions because they remain unanswered, or perhaps there are so many version of tabs, the problems and solutions are ROM specific.
Its almost like we need sub forums, if running this, search here...

I appreciate your reply.
a few questions:
1. is you tab rooted?
(I am reading like crazy to get all this, but there is so much! I thought TB only works on rooted units, but not sure if it requires a certain rom)
2. which rom are you running?
If I ever get this, I'm going to create a matrix: root - rom - apps - working y/n

I have gmarket, no mods.
I go to market and see no "updates"
I searched for, and installed google voice, no luck.
I will go back and look up installing gapps, I seem to recall it requires some mods first and that is what I was trying to avoid until I am sure I want to keep the unit.
I am on the fence. I never realized how (don't boo me) "hooked on windows I am" I love my android phone, but when it comes to the things I like to do on a bigger screen, as much as I love the touch feature, I really am so much more productive on a laptop. I'm sure its a learning curve, and I LOVE playing with new technology - and this sight is LOADED with all you need to know about the tab. But I am a step by step person and I feel like I am spending more time searching than learning.
Its just me .. kudo's to all the folks that help and dev here .. its a very amazing team!

Sorry for the delay in repsonding, I didn't have this thread tagged to notify me of replies.
Been busy messing with the new CM7 Beta for the Gtab.
Ok so, answers:
1) Yes my tab is rooted, the stock OS out of the box sucked the big dill pickle. I was rooted and customed within two hrs of taking it out of the box.
2) After messing around with the five or so availale ROMS, I decided to make the VEGAn 5.1 beta my daily driver, it and TnT lite are the most stable IMHO, I chose VEGAn over TnT because the news and weather genie was absent from TnT and the VEGAn web browser offer much more flexibility as far as options go. I'm a news junkie!
Also the On-Screen soft keys on the notification bar [HOME, MENU, and BACK] are fantastic additions since the keys on the device don't light up, which makes it real [email protected]%# when using the device in a poorly lighted room.
3) As for TB, it is my understanding it will only work with rooted devices.
4) It is also my understanding that TB will work with MOST Android devices and most ROMS whether stock or customed. YES TB will work with stock OS ROMS provided the device is rooted. And yes it is possible to Root your device WITHOUT unlocking the BOOTLOADER, both my N1 and GTAB are rooted via this method. N1 with Universal Androot and my GTAB with Z4root.

I don't have many people to call and those I do call i prefer video, but i have placed a few Skype calls on the Gtab and it works just fine for voice. Doesn't give the option for video, almost like it doesn't recognize the camera. i tried Fring and when i go to do a test call it makes a hideous noice and i have to force shut down the app. So for voice Skype is great.
Google Voice in the Market.
For those who after the market fix are still unable to find the google voice app, here is what I found. There are 3 different fingerprints floating around. When I could not find voice in the marketplace I started experimenting with the diffrerent fingerprints, and to my surprise each one gives different search results, with diffrerent apps available / missing. On my tab, with the samsung Tab fingerprint I was able to locate the google voice app, but with the standard mahimahi 2.2 i could not

Thanks for the heads up!
So the fingerprint is changed via build.prop edit?
Would either one of these mess up the VS GTab?

All the standard disclaimers re: blowing up your tablet etc. are all still in effect. however the fingerprint method significantly improves the plain vanilla clear market cache fix, at least on my tab. YMMV

[APP] Google Dialer

This is a modified dialer apk, and root is NOT required. All credit for this goes to those mentioned in the original OP.
I know this is in the S6 forums, but it is confirmed (by me) working on G5.

Works great. Thank you
Does this app actually make the call or is it just a dialer that opens the LG app soon as you hit send? I'm just looking for a solution to the stock app because it turns hot pink when you hang up... It's the only thing about this phone that I don't like. It's driving me crazy ?

Goto Settings > Apps > *Touch the 3 dots in the top right corner* and select Configure Apps > Default Apps > Phone App > *Select the Google Dialer. It will be listed as simply "Phone"
I have not tested this for incoming calls just yet, but for outgoing, it will skip the stock dialer completely. Hope this helps.

Yes this is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the help. No more ugly dialer. And it also works for incoming for me. Actually, the entire app works like it should - settings and all.

Good Good... Glad to hear it works as it should for you.
so no caller ID though... I wonder if the Tmobile Name ID feature will still work
Well standard caller ID works.. I will have to wait till an unknown number calls me to test the rest.

Stupid question maybe, but what exactly do you find wrong with the stock G5 dialer app, and what makes the Google dialer more desirable?
TIA

It's more visually pleasing? For people who really want a stock Google experience, it's one more thing to get you closer to that. With this and the Contacts app installable from APK Mirror, I'm officially using all the stock Marshmallow apps for everything but my Exchange email.

I find the LG dialler requires more finger presses. But I'm coming from the Song Xperia dialler.
New call: Go to dialler. Possibly not on the call tab so click that. Start to type name and some suggests come up. Click on the [v]. Select the person/number to call. And now the bit that annoys me, press the call button. If I click on number why not just call them, why show number and wait for me to press another button?
Call back: So I missed a call. Go to dialler, go to call logs, click on the call I missed. Show the contact details. WTF? So now I click the phone icon and call. Yes I know there is a little call icon but I'm used to clicking a phone number and it dials it. Not have to locate one tenth of the call log line to start a call.
Anyway, I'll get used to it but I do think I have to do more work for simple calls versus other diallers.
Wow. That is as clear and concise an answer as I could ask for. I wish my wife would answer simple questions like that, but I have to ask her twenty follow-up questions just to get an answer to the first one! So, I do see what you mean, and I have found it at least a little annoying myself. I guess I just accepted it as the way it is. Never really thought to look for a different dialer, but by golly it just might be worth a look now. Thanks for taking the time to give such a thorough answer. I hope you type much faster than I do, but I use Swype keyboard.
Does the original Dialer needs to be uninstalled first before installing Google-Dialer 3.00?
-> If yes, where to get that original Dialer found and uninstalled?
How about if Google-Dialer will be updated in future to 3.xx?
- Auto-Update or manual update needed?
- Link to webside to be able to always have the latest version installed?
Thx
It's crashing on me. Where can I get one that works?

Ive had no issues with this. Been using it for a week or so & has been flawless.
Also been working for me with no issues. Combined with the Google Contacts app and then Calendar, Clock, and Calculator, throw an icon pack into Nova, and I seriously feels like I'm stock. Very very happy.
as soon as i click on the icon i get "Unfortunately, Phone has stopped" message.
There are several versions out there. It would be helpful if ya'll would specify which version is or is not working. I am running the 2.05.07_rc4 with no issues. I haven't tried the 3.0 version yet.

How To - Google Dialer VVM Activation Steps - YMMV

Ok so I'm posting this because we started to get off topic in the other thread, not because I think you will find it useful lol.
Basically the steps I will outline will trigger your Google Dialer to try and activate VVM. If you are on Sprint like me, all it will do is add the voicemail tab. I've seen posts from others that say the app does import all of their current Voicemails but no new ones after that. Maybe that is carrier specific or maybe if you are signed up for VVM through your carrier it works, I don't personally know.
Anyway, here we go.
What you'll need:
1- A rooted device - I'm guessing this will work on all devices not just our V30s but I haven't tested elsewhere. Feel free to provide feedback if you see this and try it on other phones, and then maybe this post can move to general Android instead of V30.
2- Google dialer installed - mine has been converted to a system app, and I'm part of the beta, so I can update through play store. I am also running magisk modules that may be allowing all of this to happen, such as xml pack, Google framework, and some others. Shout out to their respective devs, thank you.
3 - The app Shortcut Master which is available as a paid app on play store.
4 - some patience because this literally only works sometimes for unknown reasons. Maybe we can narrow down the failure rate with some trial and error but for now I can't tell you why it works sometimes and other times nada. The upside is, there seems to be no I'll effects from trying and failing.
Tldr.
You need root, Google dialer (maybe as as a system app) and the app Shortcut Master to get this done.
You should probably Force close the Google dialer app before you start so the settings take hold. Not sure if you have to, but shouldn't hurt to do it.
Step one:
Open shortcut master. Click search and enter the word "voicemail"
Step two:
You'll see lots of results. Ignore them all and scroll down to ones under the Phone App. Find VoicemailSecretCode and click launch. (I guess you could also just search that instead of just Voicemail)
Step 3:
You'll see a white screen with two options.
Sync
VVM config override < click this one.
Step 4:
Press the top option titled "load current"
You'll see it change some of the fields. This is just pulling in the current config and since you don't have much going on, very little should change.
Step5
Click the Override toggle.
Input your phone number (see pics)
Press back once when done.
Step 6
You should back to the white page with the two options again. This time press sync.
That's it. I'm not sure what makes this work since sometimes it doesn't. If you're hasn't updated with the voicemail section, try power cycling and relaunching dialer. If that doesn't work, clear the cache. If it still doesn't work you can try clearing all data, Force closing, and then following the steps again.
Now you should have the voicemails tab. It will try and activate for a while by sending you a provisioning text. It is going to send this text alot at first so be warned as I don't know if it's a free text (do people still have limited texts??)
You will now have a bit more options in your settings menu under Voicemail, however since it never provisions (or at least mine doesn't) the added options are not accessible.
Enjoy your extra tab of nothingness lol.
Feel free to throw around some thanks
*edit: The 9 attached screenshots are basically all of the steps in order except for the last two which need to be swapped. If you read them left to right you would follow 1-7, then pic 9, then pic 8 would be the last one.

Is that part of your phone number? Or did it load that and you entered your number with it?

I will just say I've only gotten it fully working on the US998 roms (I haven't tried the steps here yet). So it's very possible some carrier branded roms have stuff that mess with apps accessing voicemails, at least ones that use the carrier's database, not 3rd party ones with their own servers like youmail or Google voice. Maybe because some carriers charge for any kind of visual voicemail. Verizon does for the premium transcribing version. Just my 2 cents. I'll see if following this stuff helps me get it working on the vs996 rom I'm on now and report back if I do.

Phone number.
Curious, Where did you get your port info?
Also, noted that your preloaded part of the VVM ends with CVVM while mine is Omtp. Possibly because tmo supports vvm and Sprint is carrier blocked to their own severs???
Have you received some activation texts since reconfiguring? And have any Voicemails loaded?

Since you mentioned Google Voice, I figured it would be a good chance to start the conversation about GV, Sprint, a possible VVM workaround, and a theory I have....
I am sure that someone out there has to know the proper info/settings/specs that would allow us to bypass carrier VM and instead pull from Google Voices VVM service. Or at least I think we can all figure it out through some trial and error.
Right now I have all of my missed calls sent to GV. This allows me to ignore Sprints annoying VM service and paid VVM. All calls bypass sprints VM and instead the message gets transcribed by GVs VVM service. There must be a way to find out what GV ports and packages need to be set and in place in order to tell the dialer to read from there. I've already tried inputting my GV number instead of my Sprint # but all that does is change where the activation texts are sent.
From what I can tell, the Google dialer does not have some VVM server of it's own that it can call on. Nothing in the manifests or code that I could find. It basically only has the ability to piggy back off of a carriers server and relay it into the app as a duplicate (think pop3 / imap).
I believe this is the case because I've seen people post that their dialer absorbed all of their current VVMs but wouldn't find new ones. This probably means that the app is pointed to the place that Vvm are stored either on the device on their carriers server, but they won't get new ones because the app is not authenticated pull data.
So if we can find someone whose Google Dialer pulled in their current batch of VVM and see what their settings look like, we can see what it's pointed at in order to read that data one time and transfer it in. If we can figure out the corresponding file in the GV app, then we ate half way there!
If we can then take that info, and combine it with some knowledge of GV/Google/ and their usual servers ports etc. I think we can create a work around that would allow everyone to get free VVM by setting up a dummy (or real like in my case) Google voice number to use its transcription service instead of the carrier.
Side note for anyone who wants to hear my little conspiracy theory....
Sprint until very recently let you integrate a Google voice account. It's slightly different than just having the Google voice app. Not going to go through all the differences, but basically it was possible to have you GV # carrier integrated until recently.
I think the reason Sprint no longer does this is because Google's VVM rollout. I.e. if GV was still integrated, a quick change of the settings above and it would have properly activated Google's VVM service to work instead of the Sprint version.

Interesting. Just so we can start to trial and error our way to a better world, would you mind sharing a couple details? I may ask everyone to answer a few of these and see if we can start to work our way through this and get to some working versions.
Your Carrier:
Current Carrier VVM status: (i.e do you already have a vvm app o your phone that works, do you pay for it, is it the stock carrier app, etc.)
Since you did the GDialer Configuration Update(the steps in post 1)...
Is your Google Dialer VVM working now?
Have you received provisioning texts? No (you already answered this one)
If you already had a VVM service, did you have transcribed messages in your carrier VVM app?
If yes, did they transfer into your Google Dialer VVM tab?

Good find! I would venture a guess and say that you found something useful there.
Since it looks like that grayed out image is pointing to your TMO VVM box, I would suggest using the two ports listed there and trying them in the Google Dialer Configuration. Meaning the 443 and 8082 #s. I am not sure which is which, but if you try them both maybe it will point the dialer at the stored VVM data.
