Xperia ringer and music speaker quit working - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Would anyone here know why all of a sudden the ringer and music speaker would quite working on my X1A? The headphones work fine as does the speaker when you are making a call. The phone was not dropped, I was sitting at the computer, noticed I missed a call and wondered why since I'd not heard a ring. Did hard reset, still nothing.

sounds like the headset detector is stuck so it think it's in headset mode all the time
people report inserting and pulling out the headset XX times sometimes solves it

Thanx for your reply, makes sense but just inserted and removed headfons at least 20 times and still no go. Any other ideas?

just press volume up button of the phone

that's not the issue, I have the volume turned up all the way, still nothing.

Ring problem - solved??

OK guys,
I just had my "faulty" Diamond replaced - it wasn't ringing on calls, but all other sounds were OK. This is not the same issue that people have had with SMS notifications etc etc.
Basically only a hard reset cured the issue, but it came back after a few days.
Since using the new one I think I worked out what it could be, and it might be very embarassing.....part of it is to do with the stupid way HTC have implemented the volume behaviour in Touch Flo, and their philosophy of "why press the screen once when you can press it 3 or 4 times"! Dismissing email, missed call and SMS notifications from the Home screen anyone? - need I say more.
Anyway, the problem <I think> stems from the way they changed the volume feature. (and operator error).
In WM6.x native, if you turn the system volume off, then the ringer turns off - if you turn it up the ring stays off - BUT both volumes are seen on one screen. So it's obvious.
In Touch Flo there are 2 separate screens!! System Volume, then an Arrow left to "Ring Volume".
Anyone who has the apparent "no ringing" press the up or down volumne, then make sure you hit the arrow left for "Ring Volume".
My sample size is 1, so this maybe coincidental, but I hadn't realised it worked this way.
For those of you with the problem, please check the "Ring Volume" level and get back to us.
See the pic attached.....
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the 'no sound on calls' problem has been seen to happen when the system volume and ring volume have been at maximum. Indeed this has also been seen to happen on WM6.x native, where as you say, both levels are visible.
I was meaning the incoming calls do not ring at all- the sound when speaking still works.
Is that what you meant?
If yes then that's a pain - I was hoping it could be the end of my troubles!
This may or may not be relevant, but, I never change the volume (system or ringer - they're both set to max) and indeed I've even remapped the volume hardware buttons to other functions but on occasion I find that whilst my system volume remains on max my ringer volume has gone right down to zero.
It certainly wasn't me that did it - at least not directly through any positive action related to changing the volume anyway.
I cannot seem to reproduce this problem, and so for now it seems to occur randomly (of course I'm sure there is a definite trigger - I just haven't found it yet!).
Mathew
that is odd - whatever is causing it then, it might be ringer volume related...
This Has Solved The Problem On My Touch Diamond...will Probably Post In A Couple Of Days To Indicate Whether The Problem Has Returned...if You Don't Hear From Me In This Thread Again Then The Problem Can Been Seen As Solved For Good.

no sound.
hi. just got my new diamond. it powered up alright, installed all the necessary apps and sounded great. I also adjusted the system and the ringer volumes to around 80% of max.
but if i use the phone after around 15 minutes, there is not sound. no audio player sound, either songs or incoming calls or sms or anything. its just dead silent.
wanted to go to the shop to have it replaced, but before that, i wonder if anyone can help me and tell if this problem can be solved myself.
i guess i will wait for a reply before going for a replacement.

Bad news mate. But that problem is slightly different to the topic - it's only the ring volume which doesn't work for me and certain other people.
All other sounds work just fine.
Phone not ringing, vibrating or flashing for incoming calls
I am also having the same problem with my Diamond. The phone is not ringing/lighting up/vibrating or anything when someone is calling me. I have tried calling my phone myself to just watch it remain black. I REALLY hope someone somewhere finds a solution to this problem, or I may just throw it against the wall
I also had the same problem with my Telus CDMA diamond - sound worked fine, then after a random amount of time after power off, there would be no sound - no ring, no mp3 audio, nothing. Sound would be restored after soft reset, but would again disappear sometime after being powered down. I tried everything to fix - reflashed various roms, SRS WOW driver, everything - no fix to be found. The only way I could prevent the sound from disappearing was to use the "not suspend power" option of S2U2 - sound was maintained but it sucked battery like crazy. So, I returned the phone for exchange - they exchanged no problem. I haven't had a problem since with the new phone.
Phone not ringing for incoming calls
I've had this problem twice in the last couple of days. After testing a few scenarios I have been able to reproduce this problem on my TD. Like other users, the problem that I was experiencing was that my TD would not ring upon an incoming call. It would flash the screen and show caller ID, but no sound. Ring volume and system volumes were both at max.
I have been using an alarm application, G-Alarm v0.6.4. This app was installed to the device memory. After setting a test alarm and cancelling it, I then called my TD and the problem was reproduced. Are any other TD owners with this bug also using G-Alarm? (I also found that the G-Alarm was not stopping by pressing "Stop", so thought it was a bit buggy.)
I could restore the phone ringer by opening Settings -> Sounds & Notifications -> Notifications. I found that my original ring tone for an incomming call had changed by itself. When I restored the ringer to my chosen ringtone, problem solved.
I uninstalled G-Alarm and so far so good.
I'm interested to see if any others with this problem are using G-Alarm or any other 3rd party alarm app.
Regards,
Paul
Paul, I also seemed to have run into the same issue with g-alarm. I say seem because although I did a hard reset the issue has persisted. The issue seems to frequently crop up when I switch sound profiles.
I've the same problem. No Sound after some call or others sounds play. When this happens and if I receive a call the others not listen my voice. This means that when audio disappear, speaker and also microphone not work, like the system can't comunicate with them. The volume control not resolve my problem. I've done HR and with nothing installed in my phone the problem come back again after few minutes. So it's not a problem of third part bad software, but htc orginal software or hardware problem.
Anyone solve it o have idea?
Thanks!
Perfect solution sickboy555 - I feel a right twit!!!!
no sound
So, for me, the Diamond is a dead brick - just good to look at, with no sound after 15 or even 10 minutes of standby.
can anyone just tell me if this type of a problem may be related to 1. Hardware, or 2. software.
I've given it to the shop from where i bought it from, but they keep on returning me the phone after a week to 10 days, telling that it's been fixed now. But the problem still persists, and I keep on giving them the brick back again and again.
Frustrated, i wonder if I can fix it myself, or just go to the shop, and throw it against the wall and count the pieces !!!!!!!!

glad to have helped!
I'm not sure if there is a real hardware issue as well. Are the others with the "same" problem sure they followed the guidance????
Hi Sickboy555,
yes I checked your advice but this wasn't the cause of the problem for me. As posted earlier, for me it was caused by my G-Alarm application. It's been over a month now since uninstalling G-Alarm and the problem hasn't returned since.
you are the man,thank you.
Thanks. My incoming ring tone problem has been solved.
er...sorry..wat is the solution again?? i dun really get it...

no music thorugh earphones when fone is on vibrate

When you set the phone to vibrate mode, both the ring and system vol slider slides all the way down. This causes no sound in anything even with using earphones when playing music and watching movies.
Does anyone have the same problem and have a fix for this?
Thanks in advance
Yep, same problem, and so does everyone else.

when you put it as vibrate it turns off all phone sounds (it is standard in all windows mobile phones) if you turn the volume up and put the headphones in all phone sounds will go through the headphones.
Sounds like a non problem to me. What would you expect if you have the volume turned all the way down? No sound. If you have head phones and plug them in then turn of the volume. It'll only be in the head phones.
Nah, the problem when the headphones is plugged and sound is turned on. If the phone rings, it still rings through the speaker (not the headphones). So if i'm in a library or something, i can't listen to music without turning the sound on. When the phone rings it will disturb everyone. All my phones i used before non-windows phones from nokia and sony ericsson still had music through the headphones even if the phone was on vibrate.
Ah I see what you're saying now. Personally I see it as a good thing. If I had the phone charging, i.e. not in my pocket or where I could feel it, and was on BT stereo headset but didn't have it plugged into my ears then I would be totally unaware that I was receiving a call. But I must say that I'm not in the library often (last time was probably about 1982) and I don't use vibrate at all really.

Any way to play music through headphones in vibrate mode?

This is rediculous.. but apparently winmo doesnt allow you to play music while the phone is set to vibrate...
Is there any way I can get around this?
I dont want my phone ringing in the middle of class, and I dont want to risk forgetting to switch my phone back into vibrate after i finish listening to music.
In all honesty i dont see how this will be possible. I understand your issue however the X1 is effectively cutting off all sound from the unit, pretty much like hitting MUTE on your desktop/laptop master. I could understand if third party software could get around this but i just tested out youtube player for example and good as gold it cut the sound right off whilst on vibrate.
I dont think there will be a solution for this to be honest...i hope im proven wrong though, sure there will be a genius on here with an answer
Maybe I really am just asking for too much. But all of my previous feature phones allowed playback through headphones in vibrate mode. And if no headphones were plugged in, the device asked if I wanted to continue and playback music through the speakers anyway (while keeping vibrate mode active).
i may be a bit confused about your question.
im not sure but your phone shouldnt ring on your phone outlet speaker with headset plugged in.
i guess you can make a null ring tone....
I noticed this the other day in class also. I put my phone on silent and went to the music player and it wouldn’t give any sound to the headphone, the only way was to put the volume back up but this meaning if any one text or rang your phone the class would all hear.
I hope there is a solution for this
one fix is in the volume setting ( the one that pops up when you press volume up or down), turn the phone setting all the way down... you wont hear your phone ring but you can still play music.
another way is to just set the phone ring setting to just vibrate mode only. (haven tried it tho yet as no need for me too but just trying to offer solutions). lots of options in the setting, sound notification menu.
it might not be a one touch solution but i think it can be set up to the way you want it too.
I dont have a solution but I gotta ask... listening to music in class???? At the risk of sounding old fogeyish (I cant believe the spell checker let that word through) shouldnt you be listening to the teacher/lecturer?
Wait, can't you put the ringer on vibrate, but keep the system sound on? That's what I would do. I use the touch audio control so when I use the volume rocker I can switch between ringer and sytem.

No no you missed the point.
I'd listen to music on the way to school. Then I'd turn off the bluetooth once i was done listening. Heres is the problem, once i turned off the bluetooth headset i use, the phone returns to normal sound mode, and is free to ring during class if I forget to switch it back to vibrate.
And I guess I could just manually switch everything to vibrate, but on the weekends I like being able to hear my phone ring.
I'll just have to change the phone to and from vibrate mode when i listen to music I guess...
Why don't you set the ring volume to 0% (don't press silent or vibrate, just set the ring volume down) and leave the system volume where you want it?
Works without problems here.

Does setting ring volume to 0% make the phone vibrate?
Cause not hearing any ringing or getting any vibrating might be just as bad XD
Shadowdh, I was being a bit vague/mixed up, so the fault is mine. No need for apologies

dude you haven't even tried it and yet you already commented on it .heh
the answer is NO it doesn't set to vibrate not just yet. if you click you're speaker icon on your top left screen(almost) it will pop you up a volume panel which consist of left: the system sound and the right: the phone speaker sound consists of six levels each top most being the highest and bottom being 0%. then below a setting of 3 radio buttons for ON, VIBRATE, and OFF.
now setting the right slider to bottom most and setting the left slider on top most gives you full system sound but 0% phone speaker sound. the radio button is autonatically still at ON and not VIBRATE by then. that is your only choice so far.
another problem afterwhich is, you won't hear any phone ring whenever someone calls you up even through your earpiece. that's just darn. I guess it's just a winmo device problem aprt from your previous phones. SEs I guess.
things SE didn't consider to take a look coz SE people lifestyles are music, camera, and or business and or both.
one more thing, when you turn your volume maxed up. you phone will ring even when the earpiece is plug. there's just no setting to turn it off. I mean for silent users who lstens to music by earphones, most of the time they like it that the speakers are just off and every sound just goes by the earphones. There is simply no setting for that.
in previous model of SE's whenever you plug an earpiece and the phone recognizes it. the phone automatically turns to headphone mode, which utilizes only the earphone as the source of sound and nothing else UNLESS specified in the settings. there has been an issue that users forget to unplug their earpieces that they misses x number of calls the whole night while their phone vibrate silently on their bags or table with their earpieces plug. That is the reaon SEs newer models after k750i I think coz I got a k750 and a w800i which is consecutively released. the w800i and so forth features a earphone mode setting but their phone speakers still rings as well as sounds when an sms goes in even if the earpieces are plugged, without a setting to disable it.
It just the way it is, and some people still need that feature. Like me. I don't want people to hear my phone ringing in public places like a market, street at dawn or related areas. Whenever I wanted to listen to music when someone calls, send an sms, the phone just simply sounds off, publicly.
Another comment/workaround a read is a null tone. Might work, but you have to manually set a null tone for calls, as well as for SMS. without any automation like a uh NULL profile perhaps.

I've set my phone to always ring AND vibrate on incoming calls (so I recognize incoming calls even if the music in my living room is very loud ). So if I decrease the ring volume to 0% it does vibrate.
this is like saying i wanna close my eyes and still be able to see something.
As a more lateral solution, have you tried using something like SPB Phone Suite to set either manual or time based profiles?
I'm thinking you could have something like a travelling profile with bluetooth on and sound on and a school one with the phone/system on vibrate and bluetooth off. You could then either change manually with two clicks of the home screen or have it change automatically dependant upon time.
ill always use flightmode! easy and safe...

the problem I encounter here is that phone calls are muted and it's great, but it will still ring through the speaker if an sms is received
any solutions?
this makes it impossible to listen to music at quieter (and most usually boring) places!
Possible Solution
I'm not sure if this works on the ROM you're using, but I'm using Touch-IT 3.5 and it allows me to automatically put the phone on vibrate during appointments.
You could set your classes as appointments and not need to worry about it from then on.

[Q] No ring sound volume on incoming call

I have had my Z3c about 6 weeks (US- AT&T) and I really enjoy everything about this phone. However, recently the phone quit ringing audibly when I have an incoming call. When I get a call, the screen comes on and shows that I have a call, the phone vibrates like it always does and the LED flashes bright white. But no sound, no ringtone. Actually - a very quiet ringtone, like through the small phone receiver speaker maybe. All other notifications sound out normally: SMS, email, alarms all work fine. Speakerphone works fine. Only incoming calls have no ring volume. Of course, I have checked the volume settings and have the ringtone & notifications volume slider wide open. I have changed ringtones, adjusted every sound and volume setting on the phone to no effect. I turned 'OK Google' off since I have read that in listening mode, OK Google can impact speaker output. Nothing had any effect. I have searched across the internet and haven't found any answer and no one mentioning this issue with the Z3c.
I did find that the exact same issue happened with the Z1 and Z1c when they got the KitKat update in early 2014 (http://www.androidcentral.com/sony-fix-coming-xperia-kitkat-audio-bug ) but i don't find any resolution discussed so I expect that Sony fixed that with an update.
My next step is a hard reset but I can't do that before the weekend so I thought I would throw this out to see if anyone else has the issue or - better yet - a solution.
One thing I am going to try is the stereo sound mod for the Z2 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/general/z2-stereo-sound-mod-incoming-calls-t2921840 ) if the hard reset doesn't work.
EDIT: 10/30/14 - I continued to try different things with the no-ring-volume issue. I took the time today and did a factory reset including erasing internal storage but that didn't help. In addition to what I described above I found the following:
- on an incoming call, the speakerphone does not work. If I turn on speakerphone, the caller can hear me but I cannot hear them. If I turn off speakerphone, everything is fine (I hear the caller in the earpiece, they hear me).
- I have LED set to off so it should not come on except for charging. But it flashes - fast and bright white - on an incoming call. This may not be part of the issue but I have never seen it flash before on incoming call. Maybe I notice it now since I have been staring at my phone while making dozens of calls to myself from another phone to figure this out.
- External speakers do work fine, I can play music, video, etc. and it all sounds fine.
So...any ideas?
I would try setting it back to a default ringtone. It may be having an issue with the one you are using. This is assuming your issuing a custom ringtone.
CollinsJ - Thanks for the response but I have tried many of the ringtones, including the default. I was actually using the default ringtone when the problem started. I am going to edit the original post to include a few more things I learned today related to this problem.
Maybe it's time to take it in for repair.
I have the same problem with my Z3, did you find a solution for that??
z3 sound
Same here. i downgraded to kitkat, no effect.
on sony forum there is a ton of people with this issue.
I got Z3 dual, incoming ringtone volume is terrible and speakerphone volume is lower than speaker for ear.
I rooted but i found no patch to fix it.
Viper4Android doesnt help
Any ideas?
Hi,
I have a Z1 which had similar problem, phone would not ring when there was an incoming call. Tried setting to default ringtone, which didn't work.
The second thing I tried was restart the phone in safe mode, and tested it, and got the incoming call ring. After that I restarted normally and it is now working. Don't exactly know what it did but it works now.
Press volume key up then choose sound. Sometimes it has been set to priority.
It worked for me!
patelsk
Thank you. I restarted my phone in safe mode, like you said, and all works fine.
I have had my phone 2 years and yesterday it stopped ringing and the alarm doesn't ring either, help please

Phone speaker isn't reliable

Hi there,
Not sure if my phone is a dud - has anyone experienced the V40's boombox speaker suddenly not working or else very quiet? I've tried to adjust the volume controls, but it either seems normal, or else it even seems like it's in a call (it says "call volume" when adjusting the volume rocker switches sometimes, even though I'm not in a call). The volume sliders are all full. The only cure is a reboot. But you can still hear screen taps and things too. It's sort of like a media playback issue, and it happens in other apps as well - like Youtube, WhatsApp, etc. It's not going to Bluetooth either...
I have done a factory reset and the problem crept back right away.
Thanks for any help.
Thx

I am facing a similar issue with "call volume" showing up when headset is connected (even though am not on a call); This specifically happens if my V40 has been previously connected to a Bluetooth device which has a mic, and then has been disconnected from it. I have to restart my V40 everytime this happens as otherwise the audio is really inconsistent (it sounds cracked at lower volume, and tinny at higher volume).
When you say "the problem crept back right away", is it after some particular action (for instance connecting to some BT speaker or something?);
Also, did you try running it in safe mode (hold power button, press the "power off" icon in the screen, it should show an option to re-boot to safe mode), for me, it works on safe mode but the problem comes back even after a factory reset when i am in the normal screen.

Hi there, yeah, I can't exactly pinpoint when the problem crept back after the reset. I had been using Google Maps but I can't imagine how that would affect audio. The next time I used Google Maps, I couldn't here the navigation cues, and then I checked Youtube and "behold!"...the sound had got cut out again. Had to reboot. Would the phone be routing audio to some bluetooth channel or something, like my Samsung Gear S3? Why it would, I don't know. I do remember seeing the "in call" display once when this was happening which clearly is a different bug and not bluetooth related. I did try to connect to a bluetooth device, and then disconnect, and the problem has not resurfaced yet but I feel that I don't have much confidence in it at the moment.
I'll look into Safe mode; thx for the tip.

I know this has happened to me as well but I know what is causing it on my phone. Whenever taking a video call in Facebook messenger then my phone stays locked in the call volume also. Only way I have found is to restart the phone also. I am not using Bluetooth at all for the call either just the phone speaker so it's not a Bluetooth issue on my end. Having to restart the phone definitely sucks.

Well i found one more case - when doing a FTP through WiFi from PC (to transfer files); once FTP connection is closed (after transferring), and then if the earphones are plugged-in, phone says "call volume". Had to again restart. I was trying to find any app that can just refresh the UI/settings/system without doing a restart every time but haven't been successful. LG definitely need to fix it.
Thx for the replies, I have no clue as to why this problem is happening, but I've traded my phone for a new one in the 10-day purchase period and so far it is working correctly. Fingers crossed.
