NAND vs Heret, & You - Touch CDMA Android Development

I've got a few questions about installing to NAND vs running it from the SDcard with heret, I'll add the answers under the questions once they have been answered
-What's the difference in battery life?
-Does windows mobile unload completely?
-What's the performance difference
-Is there a difference in running memory size'
-Is it possible to switch the install to NAND from SD and viceversa without user data loss

1. It's about the same
2. Yes it's completely gone from your phone.
3. It's faster from nand
4. no
5. yes

I get much better battery life on nand. better than wm. maybe its just me.

Same here, except when i use a 2.1 build, they drain my battery like crazy. But MYN's donut gives me way better battery life than any wm rom.

that's cause they still haven't quite perfected 2.1 yet. but myns build is near perfect! and the speed on nand is amazing

more like definite battery improvement!
my phone actually lasts a whole day!
WITH heavy phone usage
but now that opera mini 5 is on the market.
the battery should last even longer now
no more having to load a whole page
just images of the sites! haha

The only thing that I would disagree with previous posters is on the speed issue. To me this is all dependent on the quality of your SD Card and your setup.
With a class 6 SD card (even without partitions) I saw little difference in speed when I flashed to the NAND, OTOH I'm sure people with slower cards saw vast improvements.

Getting ready to go to NAND...
I've been running from my SD card for several months and now getting ready to take the plunge by installing Android to NAND.
Questions...Once you install to NAND:
1) do all Apps get installed to NAND or can some get installed to SD?
2) I assume that you can still reference music and other files on the SD card?
3) Are there any drawbacks to going to NAND? Wiping windows from ROM is not a concern.
Looking forward to NAND.
Thank you for your advice!

i made the switch from sd to nand last week, and boy, what a difference!
battery life:
i used to get about ~12 hours with sd, with no data, no browsing, and limited texting
with nand, i have synchronization turned on for both gmail and work email, do tons of browsing, games, and making calls, and still have ~70% after 12 hours
stability:
my phone used to freeze up about once a day (sometimes up to 3 times) with sd install, since nand install, i haven't had one freeze up
definately worth the switch to nand!

Great! Getting ready to unlock my phone.

there should not be a significant battery difference nand vs haret IF you are using the same kernel. I suspect that people who note the difference changed from an older zimage kernel to a newer NAND kernel (.nbh), as there were significant battery improvements in the last 3 or so kernel updates. i agree with other posters that you probably won't see a significant difference in speed if you are running a fast sd card, maybe a small one.
i personally use nand, cause I have no use for win mo anymore.

I have to disagree with the others. I used the same date nbh as zimage and after flashing I get about 6 more hours of battery. and I have a good sdcard. on startup it even says [new high speed sdcard installed] my old 512mb card never said that. so I do have a really good sdcard and again, after flashing, its much!! faster!!!

has anyone had issues with loosing connection to their service provider with a flash? I'm on verizon and doing a hard reset on the phone has made me loose my information and have to call to get it reset up before. If that happens we have to flash back to winmo to fix it?

I'm on sprint I have that problem only if i flash to stock winmo then out to another rom without loading winmo, letting customizations run, then making a data connection, if i do that then flash then i have no problems. But i can flash from rom to rom with no provider data loss

Sorry to revive an ancient topic . I'm really thinking about making the switch from haret to NAND but I would really like to keep my data. The second post in this said that you could keep your data. Is that true? If so I'm flashing it tonight!

1. All apps do get installed to the NAND, and you can move some apps to sd in the applications settings
2. Yes, you can, altough i haven't had much luck with video (maybe because my sd is class 2? it plays for 1 second and then freezes, but sound still goes, and when i try to push something, it force closes)
3. NO DRAWBACKS WHATSOEVER please go with froyo

Overclock Kernel for G1 w/ CM6 32B?

I cannot find one... I just want it to be a little more faster, at least overclock to 600-680? I am getting a bigger battery so battery life shouldn't be a problem, I need it to be stable and non buggy.
PLEASE help, I have posted threads here and barely anyone responds. Please and thank you.
HTC Dream(T-Mobile G1) 32B, with CM6.1.
Have you tried here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=698578?
By the way, G1's have not been proven very stable much beyond 578mhz.

I guess I am just looking for a little speed bump and a MAJOR battery improvement, it barely lasts long with OEM battery. From 99 to 80 in a good 30 minutes, the hell?
For battery life on a G1, your best choice right now is Farmatito's kernel. I can go at least 24 hours with either barebones CM 6.1 or Froyo by Laszlo. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010932

I am using the kernel by ezterry, it's running pretty smoothly, how does this compare?
It is an improvement. Farmatito has managed to squash the usb battery drain bug. In standby, I lose 1% or less an hour. (No wifi, gps or bluetooth).

Alright biggest question, what is the most stable Sense ROM, I am talking like it runs as smoothly as you would think it's a new device on the market... I don't care if it has Froyo or Eclaire, it just has to work, as I enjoy eye candy, but I NEED speed. The browser on CM6 is just really slow... I know it's partially because this is a 32B device, but there has to be a better ROM, SPEED I need the fastest speed while still keeping the whole stability and pretty thing.
Any suggestions? Cause' as of now, I don't think I wanna be sticking with CM6 sadly. That and the best kernel you have ever found...and I will be happy
Please and thank you
I have no experience with Sense ROMS. Sorry.
I have been experimenting with just what you are looking for...something fast and stable that best uses my available RAM and meets my needs. I've tried most of the Froyo ROMS and have settled on two: barebones CM 6.1 and barebones Froyo by Laszlo. Right now, I'm running CM6.1.
I've made a script that installs a very tiny Gapps file with just what I need and takes out what I don't, including:
delete("/system/app/Protips.apk", "/system/app/RomManager.apk", "/system/app/CMWallpapers.apk", "/system/app/Facebook.apk", "/system/app/LatinIME.apk", "/system/app/LatinIMETutorial.apk", "/system/app/Twitter.apk", "/system/app/Gallery3D.apk", "/system/app/LiveWallpapersPicker.apk", "/system/app/Music.apk", "/system/app/DSPManager.apk", "/system/app/YouTube.apk", "/system/app/CMStats.apk", "/system/vpnservices.apk", "/system/app/VoiceSearch.apk", "/system/app/VoiceDialer.apk", "/system/app/PicoTts.apk", "/system/app/SpeechRecorder.apk");
I also delete all the ringtones I don't use and use a static bootanimation instead of the CM version. That leaves me with 25-28MB of RAM consistently, running no compache, swap or JIT and all apps internal. I also have custom MTD at 80/2 and have about 45MB of leftover space. Works well for me!

I removed a lot the apks that you listed, I am sure that I won't notice it too much seeing as I already overclocked to a good 614(don't notice anything wrong). I removed the software keyboard as I already have the Gingerbread keyboard, which is much better in my opinion, plus I already have the hardware keyboard anyways. The File manager was something I didn't need too, already used Astro and Root explorer. Rom Manager is extremely pointless because I don't even have CWM anyways so I couldn't use any of the features in the app. I listen to music a lot, use facebook quite often(even though it works very slow, I use it to sync contacts) and sorta want to keep the youtube app.
Thanks for the advice, if there is anything else, please do tell, because I feel this can go faster.

Starting with Optimus X2 needs, hints, must haves, possibilities

Hi there,
im new on the Optimus X2 and i am trying to figure out what you can do withit.
i got several questions and hope you can tell and or help me withit.
My first action on using Android was to put version 2.2.2 i think, on my HD2 Leo using clockwork and NAND. Had no experience to do stuff like that before, but great forum here helped me trough it.
so...
1.
I´ve heard about problems with the battery, that lifetime is not displayed right.
I think i may have something like that too. sometimes battery run out after only about 5-9 hours (using web and/or games)of course i am using it in that time but that seems to be a little bit too fast. In standby sometime it is turning off after 12-18 hours, of course using it with calls and sms sometimes.
2.
There normally should be an update or something, i thought the X2 is beeing delivered with android 2.3.? or will be updated soon after selling?
Are there any official information?
3.
I thought X2 will be out with 512mb ram?
when i start 3-4 apps and close them down, sometimes the advanced task killer shows before closing programs only 50-60 mb ram (is it ram?), after closing goes back up to about 180.
its not that nice when you want to take pictures or record video in F-HD is not working properly. have to close down everything before.
4.
What is this Cm7? i read alot about it, but i still dont know exactly what it is?
I`ve allready rooted my phone, whats a good app for deinstalling systemstuff and preinstalled games and apps?
5.
What are the 10 most useful and must have apps/programs to configure, style, and use youre phone?
6.
Are you guys using different roms? are there faster ones, more stable, less battery using?
7.
I got an 8gb external sd card, system only is showing , 4,9gb of 5,9gb free, maybe an sdcard bug like HD2 Leo had a time ago?
phone specification:
phone is rooted
I am using android 2.2.2
Baseband version 1035.21_20110405
Kernel version 2.6.32.9
Build number FRG83G
LG Version LGP990-V10d

Battery life is a bit of an issue with the stock rom, since, on Froyo, there apparently is a problem with idle power consumption. This is much better on some of the custom roms based on Gingerbread, e.g. CM7.

The "official" rumours are, that there will definatelly be a 2.3.* update, though when is not clear, we will possibly have to wait until fall to get it.

Ideally, Android should be managin the RAM for you. The device does have 512 MB RAM, but mind that there is alot of stuff on the stock rom. You can have more available to you by
deleting or disabling widgets on the stock rom
installing a custom rom

It is called CyanogenMod7, and is a very popular custom rom, which exists for a lot of different Android devices, including the LGOS. It is also based on 2.3.4, so it basically already is a Gingerbread Rom, but I think it still has a Froyo kernel and/or userspace, so not completely native.

I'm not gonna call out 10 apps here, but living in Germany, you should definatelly check out "Öffi" (free). I also find Maverick (payware), GPS Essentials (Free) and Dropbox (free) to be quite handy.

This depends on how happy you are with modding your phone and flashing things on it. There can be quite a bit of work necessary to get a custom rom running on your phone, but it might be worth your while. I've used custom roms mainly for the fact that they can have massively lower battery consumption when the phone is idling (e.g. display off, standby). When using the phone actively, I've not found differences to be that big regarding battery life.

You are probably confusing the internal sd card with your external one. Keep in mind that the LGOS has a 6GiB internal sd card.
ok
thank you for this detailed answer.
i will take a look on the other Roms and will try it i think.
The problem with the sd card is not from confusing with the internal one.
Using the App, App 2 SD Free phone memory is showing me 1,45GB, on SD Card which must be the internal one shows me 5,51GB and on moveable which seems to be the external sd card it shows me 1,45GB again instood of my 8GB SD?

[Q] Performances w/ latest STOCK ROM (june)

HI guys, after flawless months spent on Fr18beta2 from Modaco, I decided to jump the hurdle & try this MKV-reading-supposed-to-be-snappier ROM (2.6.32.9, FRG83G)... while it does what it says (MKV support.. btw, is there a way to store LARGE files on ext-sd and have them read properly ???), I now get ridiculous Quadrant scores (1850~~) AND am not able to access the internal 8gb memory from my windows explorer...
Does it seem normal to you ? Is there a way to speed things up ??? Is there a Kernel I could use without losing mkv compatibility ???)
Thanks in advance for your answers !
Just installed Quadrant to check it out and got 2492. That's good, right? Much better than your result, and it is all stock. No problems with SD. Try flash it again, don't know what else to say.

Why spam the forum with posting this topic twice?
It's not as if I'd wanted to deliberately.... sorry :/
These are my observations in comparing my out of shop v10a ROM versus the June released v10d ROM here in the Philippines.
Pros:
GPS fix is now so much faster.
Battery stays at 100% longer.
After turning off USB mass storage mode, exit animation is now android-managed (faded zoom) compared to a slide out.
Cons:
PlayerPro 2.06 crashes.
There are times that if you plug your headset while the screen is off, it will not be detected. (It needs to be plugged while screen is on).
Overall, I am very happy with this ROM compared to the old stock. (All my mods in my sig.)

[Q] Difference in speed between NAND and HaReT?

Hey folks,
I recently installed dark_prince's Fresh Froyo (2.2.2) on the SD card using data.img and system.img (both 768 MB insize) (SanDisk 2 GB) and using HaReT to boot. I must say, I'm quite impressed. After having flashed a new radio (1.65...) things like WiFi and Audio work well.
Although I could imagine using Android permanently, there's some things that still bother me, like occasional slow response times and suboptimal recognition of keystrokes when writing a longer text. Oftn somecharactrs will be mssing, whn typingtoo fast, which is kinda annoying when writing E-Mails.
So I wonder, whether I could benefit from a NAND-install. I read in some other thread (for the HD2) that battery life often is improved, but overall performance doesn't change that much. So would you change to NAND? Or should I rather try a completely different Android build?
I'm not exactly scared of flashing, but I certainly won't do it, unless it makes sense.
Any advice is highly appreciated.

NAND will always be faster than the fastest SD card you can get (on the kaiser). Lag and missed keystrokes will improve by having data on NAND.
Battery life will also improve a little.
You should always try other android builds, thoughtlesskyle makes some pretty good ones. scooter1556 also does some awesome ones, and has been bringing cyanogenmod to us (since 5, eclair).
Try around, remember, if you don't like it, you can always flash a windows mobile again

Upgrade from Android 1.0 to 2.3.7

Hello. I recently stupidly flashed RC29 on my phone. That's how I got out of there.
How to:
1. You realized that you are on RC29. Do not worry. Let's start the escape.
2. Start phone without sim card. Type on the keyboard <ENTER button>setprop persist.service.adb.enable 1<ENTER button>. Reboot with a SIM card (any, not even a valid one)
3. Connect your phone to PC, download ADB and type command: adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n com.android.launcher/.Launcher
4. Download and install telnet: adb install telnet.apk
4.1 Once at the Home screen, open the keyboard and press the Enter key twice.
4.2 Type telnetd & press Enter. The Contacts screen will come up, just ignore it. There will be no indication that you did it right.
4.3 Open Android Telnet Client; type localhost in the large text box and 23 in the smaller text box on the right.
5. Download the recovery to a memory card and type the command in telnet:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/<your recovery>.img
Just type reboot recovery! Now you have a complete Recovery!
6. WARNING! Install 2.22.19.26I and reboot into recovery 2-3 times. Check the radio version in HBOOT. If version 2.22.19.26I install the HBOOT package. Reboot 2-3 times.
7. It's all. Install roms.
Pay attention! Clockworkmod is not recommended by Cyanogen developers. Use AmonRa. (cwm recovery left in the post in case of emergency)
The story of how I installed CyanogenMod 7:
1. Download CyanogenMod 7 build (DM me if rom not downloading)
2. Install HBOOT 1.33.0013d
3. Install ROM. Download the kernel (ezgb_2636_v1.5.1_S.zip). Install kernel.
4. Just restart and wait. Now you have working system!
Notes:
Restart in recovery - HOME + POWER
Restart in HBOOT - PHOTO + POWER
Reset - CALL + MENU + POWER
Safe mode - hold MENU while booting

sorry, even though it costs 500rub, I spent everything on MiPad 2. I don’t have money for it. Sorry((
PS. and notice. I am now trying to bypass android and make my firmware on android 1.0 for dream.
I quote the article on rooting G1 from Cyanogen Wiki "ClockworkMod is not recommended for Dream due to memory shortage and file corruption."
That's why I think it's better to use Amon_RA's
On my Desire Amon_RA 2.0.1 seems better than CWM 2.5.0.7
Below you can find CyanogenMod themed version of Recovery
By the way the new Telnet version is already on Mod edit: 4pda link removed
@russanandres Thanks a lot for the tutorial, you are a real lifesaver! Exactly what I needed to get a custom rom on my G1.
Although now I'm wondering, is android 2.3 perhaps too much for this phone? I was shocked to see that the actual usable ram out of the 192mb is just 96 and out of them ~30mb free. The device itself seems to be somewhat sluggish on 2.3, the default browser can't even load google without crashing. Although I noticed it's kinda inconsistent, sometimes it speeds up a bit and gets pretty close to 1.6 speed. On the stock 1.6 the phone was fairly snappy for what it could do, although it had terrible idle battery drain. The battery on 2.3 seems better from my first impressions.
For daily driver usage in 2022 what would make most sense, if you have experience with more roms on this device? 2.3 just really seems pointless to me, as the device doesn't have enough power to run properly apps that require android 2.3 as minimum, pretty much all apps that I have installed run on 1.5/1.6+. For example, I have my music library in .opus format, tried foobar2000 and gonemad music player(they supposedly support opus) versions that are 2.3+ and they both straight up crashed on startup, perhaps due to the low ram/lack of instructions.
The speed itself doesn't annoy me as much as the soft reboots that happen from time to time when the phone gets too ''tired'', especially after reboot, for me in about 50% of the time the phone just soft reboots again like a half minute after the first reboot.
Edit: The reboots after the bootup happen if I just don't let it idle for 2 minutes or so white it's reading my sdcard, which has quite a lot of files. I doubt it's from the actual speed of the sdcard as it's a 16gb sandisk ultra, should be sufficient for this phone.
A slight overclock option seems to be present in the performance settings but I won't dare to use it, two days ago I had to do a somewhat professional solder reflow+SoC heat revive on 400C for 30 seconds with a bga soldering station and some flux, that brought it back to life, previously it would work only for about an hour after I heated it with a hairdryer. My point is that the processors in these devices haven't aged too well, in terms of wearing out mine is pretty much done for and who knows when it's gonna die again. I also managed to put a copper heat plate over the soc(with thermal paste) to absorb some of the heat in addition to the metal plating and hopefully to increase the remaining lifespan of the silicon.
Back on the topic, maybe android 2.1/2.2 would be more suitable and still with good features(mostly looking at the quick settings), although I have no idea honestly, I haven't played around with android versions this old to know which ones are lighter and heavier. 2.3 definitely seems heavier than 1.6, that is for sure.
Availability in terms of links is another issue but with research and some use of the web archive I suppose we would be able to find at least one rom per android version.

I think a swap of 256 MB or more will save your G1 on 2.3.7
So if 2.3.7 was slow, then any Android 2.x.x will be slow
Within 2.x.x the system showed more and more performance with each version

That's a great idea. I have to look into it, as far as I know I have to make a partition for the swap on the sdcard then enable it on boot with some sort of a script. Is that correct?
Guess that's what I'm gonna be doing today after work, apart from transcoding my music library to mp3 unless the music players decide to work with the swap enabled.
Another thing I wanted to mention, is it normal to have such high idle drain on this phone? Even on cm7 in airplane mode it seems to drain ~4-5% per hour or so. Perhaps my battery calibration is off, I charged it overnight and wiped the battery stats hoping to resolve this issue but it seems to persist. I got a nearly brand new vhbw aftermarket battery which should be about 900-950mah capacity from my measurements, so it's not due to an aging battery.
In comparision I also have a galaxy s1 on cm7.2 with a 12 year old battery on ~70% capacity and that phone lasts like 10 days idle with a sim card.

Swap partition can be done directly in CWM
You need to find Partion SDcard!!! ALL DATA ON THE SD WILL BE REMOVED!!!
For swap you can use this script
Code:
busybox mkswap /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
busybox swapon /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
echo 100 > /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
And about the battery: on all the HTC smartphones that I had (Sensation XE, Desire A8181, Wildfire S) it has been bad since
So try to replace it.

I see, thanks for the explanation.
I'll hold off from getting a new battery for now, hoping that this battery will get better calibrated. I'm also not certain that the problem is in the battery, if I use the device non-stop from full charge it seems to hold on for about 1h45mins SoT before going flat, which for a device with a tiny battert and a 65nm soc doesn't seem unusual.
But I was also wondering about your experience with the battery, do you also get this high idle drain or is it just my unit?
Lastly, I was wondering if multitouch can be enabled somehow. From my quick search it appears that the G1 screen supports it but its purposely disabled, although some people show it off being enabled.

The G1 supports multi-touch
It's very strange why it's not in CM7
Xperia X8 has multitouch on the custom ROM but no multitouch on the stock ROM
I found a better opmitized gingerbread rom, that still has a working link.
The system runs much smoother than on cm7.
I have to add, something missed in the tutorial is updating the radio to an even newer version that expands the available ram by 15mb. That is like 50%, considering that the phone has 30mb ram free otherwise.
Link for the radio- here
I directly updated to 2.22.28.25_S via recovery and faced no issues. It is recommended to use superwipe first, with a custom configuration file in the root of the sdcard, that will do a full wipe except for the sdcard. (Source) (Source 2)
In the custom config set:
Wipe_Sd_Secure=no
Wipe_Sd_Ext=no
I received a new sdcard that I will use for the phone, a 64gb Patriot EP series that I got for 5€, these are very fast and dirt cheap. Probably faster than the phone's sdcard reader can candle but that is fine. Point is, I ran the partition sdcard option in the recovery, I noticed it doesn't only ask for swap but it also asks for ext2 partition, what capacity should I select for that? Can't find much info for the ext2 parititions other than they are used for moving apps to the sdcard, although I have no clue how to enable that ability in the android os.
As for my battery issues, I'm certain that the culpit isn't software related but rather a failure of the Qualcomm PM7540 power management ic. The easiest way to test that, which I did, turn off the phone and wait, if the chip is fautly it will drain the battery while it is off, which it does for me(there is nearly no difference in discharge speed between the phone being on and off). I actually remember a year ago when the phone was still just sitting as a decoration on my shelf and just turned on with the hairdryer from time to time, that I had to pull out the battery or it would drain it completely while off, so the power ic failure isn't related to the processor failure at all. I don't know what is my luck, to have 2 dying important chips on one board
Perhaps I will try to remedy it the same way I did with the processor, clean it, place some flux and heat it for 30 secs at 400C. Or maybe a bit lower temperature this time. Technically both chips can be replaced and finding a donor isn't hard(especially for the power management ic, it appears that HTC HD2, Touch HD, Nexus One, Touch Pro, Diamond 2, Desire, SE Xperia X10, X10 Mini, BlackBerry Storm are only part of the devices that use this same power ic. But replacing such chips is extremely difficult and beyond my current abilities, giving it to a professional is not worth it either, the entire phone costs 40-50€(as collector's value) so with the cost of such repair I can instead purchase another G1.
Thank, it work fine

To flash That radio do i need to install the SPL "1.33.0013d"?
or i can keep using Danger SPL (1.33.2005)?
@Ulumia you know anything about this? is the "RAM Hack" SPL required?

I don't know anything about Dream because I don't have this device.
I think if you need that file, you know what to do to install it.

Hey sorry for my late response, I just fired up my G1 which to my surprise(or not) failed to cold boot yet again so I had to give it the hair dryer treatment. Guess the hot air station fix worn out at some point after I stopped using the phone 2 weeks after applying it.
I have 1.33.0013d on mine, which appears to be the recommended version. looking at the description of the rom. I would avoid using another one if possible. Unfortunately I don't remember anything specific, so I can't give you more feedback.

As i found out you need that SPL to get the extra 15MB of Ram, but be aware that SPL is pretty dangerous, because it doesn't support Fastboot flash (and fastboot boot doesn't work, gets stuck when i try to boot recovery), so if you accidentally brick your phone and do not have a custom recovery it's RIP.
