When I open the file manager to create the heroc backup I type in /sdcard/recovery-ra-herocv.1.5.2.img and it says "backup failed: could not run command" ... why!??!

check the name on it...if you type in the wrong name and not exactly how it is it wont find it

Doing it exactly how I did it the first time and nothing...

/sdcard/recovery-ra-heroc > v < .1.5.2.img
maybe adding that v in there is your problem?

nope... didnt let me flash it but it didnt let me update to damagecontrol... now the other problem im having is adb wont work properly

Have you already flashed the Amon_RA's recovery image? Or are you trying to accomplish right now?

Shouldn't there be a "-" between heroc and v?
Also, what are you trying to accomplish with this command?
Of you' re trying to flash the image you're missing a few words, and if you've already flaked the image and are trying to make your backup then you're on the wrong path, you boot into the image and make backups from the ui, no typing involved...
So what's your goal? Let's get you backed up!

Let elimate the guess work and rename the file recov.img lots less typing.

I flashed already but deleted the img from my card

I keep on getting this error when trying to flash a custom ROM into my phone. Is there a way to manually apply the ROM?
I tried booting into recovery then conecting my phone through usb and running the following commands through cmd: "adb push update.zip /sdcard/update.zip". then it tells me if I want to push "update.zipj", but once I press enter it gives me, "error: device not found"
Here's the cmd log:
Code:
C:\Users\Admin>cd\
C:\>cd\android\android-sdk\tools
C:\Android\android-sdk\tools>adb devices
List of devices attached
000000000000 recovery
C:\Android\android-sdk\tools>adb push update.zip /sdcard/update.zip
protocol failure
C:\Android\android-sdk\tools>
C:\Android\android-sdk\tools>adb push update.zip /sdcard/update.zipj
error: device not found
C:\Android\android-sdk\tools>
Am I doing the manual flashing corrrectly? I figured manually flashing the ROM would stop the error from coming up. Could someone either show me or point me in the right direction on how to fix this error and/or possibly how to manually flash the ROM in detail. I've already searched and I keep seeing threads with people asking for similar problems but with no real answer.
any help is appreciated.
1. adb push does not flash a ROM - just copies the file to the SD card
2. Looks like you are in recovery and you cannot push a file, unless you mount the SD card in recovery
Not sure what you mean "manually apply the ROM". ROM flash has to be manual, there's nothing automatic about it.
And, if you had really searched... I am sure you would have found atleast 10 references on how to flash a ROM.
Anyways, here's a link that will give you enough information to just about do anything with your CDMA Hero: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063843. BTW, this is a sticky right at the top of where you posted this question...
BOOM. lol. Also the status 0 is an improper mount command, or you have a bad version of busybox. What zip were you trying to flash out if curiosity? And are you rooted, if so how did you do it?
What I meant when I said "manually" I meant to do it through command prompt instead of Rom manager or through recovery. And I was mainly searching for a fix for the status error I was getting. Which there is no info about that in the link you posted, however it does help with flashing my Rom through command prompt. :]
@il duce It's called "nfx speedy kingdom". I've been using the salsa builds in the development section, but I came across this Rom and it says it has everything working including Bluetooth so I wanted to test it out. Ill try using the tutorial on flashing roms without an sdcard and see if it works.
1. By the looks of it, adb is not recognizing your device... so, first and foremost you will have to setup everything properly for adb to connect
2. Even if adb recognizes the device, to the best of my knowledge, you cannot flash anything through adb, you must have confused it with fastboot. And, that too is possible only if you have engineering spl
One of the links from the thread you linked to show how to push the rom to system/data and use cmd to flash it from there, but the rom I'm trying to flash is over 300mb so it doesn't fit :/
I guess I'll try contacting the dev and see if he knows of a solution, might be that the file isn't correctly packed or signed?
edit: flashing using RA recovery it gives me the following:
Code:
E:Missing file:
system/lib/libvoAMRWBDec.so
E:Verification failed
Installation aborted
Does that mean it's the ROM that's corrupted?
Dude wtf... thats an evo rom.
Also, andy is correct 100%. Cease and desist before you bork your phone.
o_o he has it under heroc roms.

Edit: Sorry everyone for the questions, I just pm'd nfinitefx and he cleared out everything for me.

Go to my signature and click on the CWM link. Then unzip a version and place the recovery.img on the root of your SD card. Now download Busybox installer, and terminal emulator. Install busybox and after installing open terminal emulator and then enter these commands:
Code:
$ su
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

i did all that installed busybox and all that stuff and i always get flash_image not found or something like that
EDIT:
Got it to work jsut need to go to 2.27.651.5 instead of 2.27.651.6
I seem to be having nearly this exact same problem. Maybe If I can flash a recovery to my hero I wont need to create a thread of my own asking for help.
What did you mean by "need to go to 2.27.651.5 instead of 2.27.651.6"?
I have root... or at least the "su" command in terminal gives me a #. I have placed the recovery image on the root directory of my sd just as dastin said and run the command but I am getting the flash_image not found error.
That's the RUU version.

Okay. Maybe my issue is not so similar after all.
I have stock that has been rooted. That is as far as I got. There were countless problems during the rooting process but I have achieved the # in the terminal. This means it's rooted right?
At this point I think I just need to flash a recovery and for some reason I can't install "ROM manager" as I get a "Parse error" when running the .apk. So I thought this manual method would solve my issues.
Maybe I should start my own thread. This might get complicated.

The image file is on the root directory of my sd card.
I'm not sure but it seems like the "flash_image" command just doesn't work. If I type "flash_image" and hit enter, it gives the same error as if I type "dead_bears".
dead_bears: not found
I don't think this has anything to do with my image file. I think something is wrong with the command.

Let me ask you this are you trying to flash this from terminal or from adb ?? If there isn't a copy of the recovery img in your adb tools folder then trying to flash it threw adb wouldn't take because the image isn't there. Since the img is on your SD card then you should flash it threw terminal if your not trying it already. If you want to flash it threw adb then place a copy of the recovery img in your adb tools folder and then run the commands from cmd terminal VIA pc/laptop. Also have you made sure that the recovery img is named correctly ?? Also will you post your setup, as in rom,kernel,baseband/radio, and hboot. Also how did you obtain root ??? Thanks
#Root_Hack-Mod*Always\
I am using the terminal and I have tried ADB as well. Both do the exact same thing. I obtained root manually but I had so many problems that don't remember where the guide that I followed is. I named the recovery image "r.img" for ease of typing.
I don't know about rom,kernel,baseband/radio, and hboot. I flashed stock to the phone after purchasing it so that I could get it activated, so these things are likely at defaults.
I still don't think that the "flash_image: not found" error has anything to do with the image file itself.

I think you should ruu back to stock and reroot again. Reason why I suggest this is because of how you gained root. If something wasn't done correctly we could be at this for hours and days trying to figure this out. But before you take that route I'll send you a pm with something I would like you to try that might work.

Quick??? Are you able to boot up into your Rom ???
#Root-Hack_Mod*Always\
I'm not sure what you mean by that, but I decided to flash stock the other night so now I'm going to try and re-root and flash a custom ROM.
I am considering this method for re-rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909258&highlight=root
Any suggestions before I get started?
What I meant by have to be on the 2.27.651.5 RUU instead of 2.27.651.6 RUU as the flash_image is not in thr 2.27.651.6 RUU so you need to be on the 5 version of stock in order to use flash_image

I know my device(From the Netherlands Sim Unlock) is on WWE firmware. Is yours carrier branded?
My advice would be to try Reinstalling CWM through HTC One AIO toolkit and then place the backup back in the CWM folder.
Maybe that will work.
clockworkmod is the installed recovery.
it just doesnt want to start the restore function. i can however select install from sd card fine, proofing that it has no problems seeing the data....
mine is not carrier branded.
So when you attempt to do the restore from CWM it lists the date/name of your backup but fails? Or can you not even get CWM to start the restore because it doesn't see the backups?

Sorry this part can be tricky because folder path is slightly different on 4.1.2 than 4.2.2. Also I haven't used CWM in a long time since I switched to TWRP.
Did you try putting the entire clockwordmod folder in:
/data/media
Then try the restore.

You didn't use the correct folders. I am not talking about folders on the root of your sdcard, I am talking about root of file system.
You should have a file explorer tool that will allow you to navigate to root and have R/W permissions so we can move files if needed. If not go to the play store and install https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wxLDEwOSwiY29tLmVzdHJvbmdzLmFuZHJvaWQucG9wIl0
Open the application and on the top left there is a small icon, click it and should open the fast access menu. Choose Root Explorer and then Mount R/W when prompted, click ok (keep defaults).
Now you should be at the device root and it will say Device in the top middle of ES.
Now browse to /data/ then /media
If you do not see a clockwork mod folder in media that is where we need to move the CMW backups in order to be able to restore them from recovery.
So move the clockwordmod folder from media/0/clockworkmod to the root of /media folder so it looks like
/data/media/clockworkmod(folders within here have your backups)
Then boot into recovery and try the restore.

tried to do exactly what you told me.
there is a data folder in root, but there is no media folder inside of that.
and if i try to create it it fails and says i should try giving the folder another name.
edit: never mind a restart of the app fixed it.
EDIT: didnt work.
my backup folder is inside /data/media/clockworkmod/
and clockwork recovery still gives desame error.
First confirm where CWM is actually putting your backups. Do this by booting into recovery and choose to do a backup. Then uncheck all partitions but the smallest and allow it to backup.
When you reboot navigate through the folders we have been talking about and see the exact path of where it put it. Then compare the contents of the backup folders to make sure it is not your original backup that is messed up.
As long as you place your backup(inside its folder) in the folder where CWM put the test backup, then you should be able to see it from recovery and restore it. If not your original backup may not be any good.
Going offline for about hour for lunch. Be back around 1:30pm EST.
grrrrrr...
made a backup for testing where clockword puts them.
they are in /data/media/clockwordmod/backup
my backup is placed in /data/media/clockwordmod.
when i try to move my backup folder to /data/media/clockwordmod/backup it says successfull, but nothing happens. i cant seem to move the folder.
EDIT: ok copying pasting worked instead of cutting pasting.
i now restored...but for some reason recovery is still clockwordmod, and it still shows tampered and unlocked on first screen before recovery.
Well you probably backed up with the custom recovery installed, right? You'll have to flash the stock recovery manually.
If you want it to be locked, you'll have to lock it. revone will do that for you, after you've flashed stock recovery.

That is all normal. All you have done is reset the ROM back to default. You will still need to restore the stock recovery and then relock the bootloader to get to 100% stock.
I am trying to find all the info needed for you to finish up and I will post it.

Back in post number 4 you state that CWM is your installed recovery.
So it seems correct that you have a custom recovery installed. However since you are S-Off, before I put together something for you to go back I need to know:
Did you upgrade your firmware?
Did you flash a new hboot (to get rid of the red warning lettering)?
Did you flash a new splash screen?
If you answered no to all three of those questions, you should be able to get back to stock by performing the following:
Download the ResetRecovery zip I made for you here:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36946918/ResetRecovery.zip
Unzip all the files into a folder. (examples will use C:\temp)
Install the HTCDriver.exe to make sure the device drivers are installed on your PC.
Make sure that USB device debugging is enabled on your device.
Open a command prompt and navigate to that folder - Start>Run>cmd Enter
Code:
cd c:\temp
Connect USB cable to phone and PC.
With the PC booted type:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
When the bootloader screen appears:
Code:
fastboot erase cache
Then:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Reboot phone and go into recovery to make sure that CWM has been replaced by HTC stock recovery. If HTC recovery appears then reboot phone.
Now relock the bootloader:
Use the revone file that you probably used to get S-Off. (If needed it can be downloaded here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314582)
Push revone to your device:
Put the downloaded revone (rename file to just revone) file in your adb/fastboot folder (c:\temp) and push it using this command:
Code:
adb push revone /data/local/tmp/
open a adb shell by typing:
Code:
adb shell
Now change to that directory:
Code:
cd /data/local/tmp
Now set permissions
Code:
chmod 755 revone
Since you have the tampered flag run this to remove it:
Code:
revone -t
Now do this so it will show locked:
Code:
revone -l
The newer revisions of revone don't do the actual locking any longer but it may output the command you need to run to fully re-lock:
Type exit to exit the adb shell session and issue the command to re-lock the device:
Code:
fastboot oem writesecureflag 3
Now verify that it worked by booting into the bootloader:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
You should see it say Locked at the top and S-On, just like it was out of the box!

Yes, you would know if you flashed firmware because it has many warnings and a few steps. Your version number is stock, the thing that worries me is that you are S-off and originally you thought you only unlocked bootloader.
Did you use revone or moonshine to achieve S-off?
Do you see the red warning lettering on the splash screen when booting?
AS long as the custom recovery is back to stock and you see the red warning letter on splash then you should be ok to proceed with locking now.

[Q] Accidentally Wiped System after 4.4.2... Please Help!

[SOLVED]
Verizon Developer Edition. I just did a complete reset to 4.4, stock recovery and all. Booted up, got the 4.4.2 update, installed that. Flashed custom boot logo, then flashed TWRP again. Went to go wipe data/cache and accidentally wiped system. Now I've got no OS.
What do I do now? I've updated to 4.4.2 from 4.4 and can't revert back.
You'll need a good friend who can make a backup in TWRP of just the System partition. This friend probably should have an identical phone, in my case, we both have Verizon Developer Editions. He also needs to be giving you a TWRP system backup that matches what you most recently had flashed. In my case, I had just taken the 4.4.2 update. Luckily he had too already. A TWRP backup of the system partition from someone on 4.4 or 4.2.2 would, I'd guess, brick you. So best to find someone with an identical phone to you and matching software, otherwise I don't know what'd happen. There should be 3 files, a recovery.log, system.ext4.win, and system.win.md5. This is about 1GB so it'll take time to transfer/download/upload around the place.
I had downloaded the adb tools a while back from step 1 here: http://www.elementalxdesigns.com/ec...our-Moto-X-Developer-Edition-and-install-TWRP
You need adb and all the drivers and crap working for this
Put the 3 files in that folder, where adb is.
Next, boot into TWRP on your phone with no OS and make a backup of everything, should go quick as there's no system and I'd guess data is probably pretty empty...
Next, go back to TWRP main page and go to mounts, then mount the /Data partition.
Shift and right click in Windows Explorer where adb is and open command prompt, type in adb shell and you should get a prompt. Type ls and hit enter, should see contents of the /Data partition
Type cd sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS and hit enter, then type ls and hit enter, you should see another folder named T something, this is the phone's serial number. Type "cd serial" where serial is the name of that T folder and hit enter again.
Type ls again and you should see a folder starting with 2014- or whatever year you may be reading this in... that's the folder that has the backup files you just made.
Type mkdir A and hit enter followed by typing ls again, now you should see that 2014- folder and another folder named A
Type exit to get out of shell. Now type adb push recovery.log /sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/XXXXXXXX/A where XXXXXXX is that T serial number, then hit enter. Should say it pushed a file in like .005s or something.
You can type adb shell again, enter, and navigate to the directory to make sure there's a recovery.log file in the A folder. If there is, good. If not, no good, you did something wrong. Don't forget to type exit to get out of shell and back into Windows command.
Now do the same for the next small file, so type adb push system.ext4.win.md5 /sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/XXXXXXXX/A where XXXXXXX is that T serial number, then hit enter. Should say it pushed a file in like .007s or something.
Finally, the big file. Don't panic like I did, it'll take some time, like 4 minutes maybe. Type adb push system.ext4.win /sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/XXXXXXXX/A where XXXXXXX is that T serial number, then hit enter. Should say it pushed a file in like 380s or something.
So, now you should have your TWRP system partition backup files in the A folder in the proper folder hierarchy. Now on the phone, just back out of mounts (hit middle button) and shut phone down and it'll warn you about there not being an OS.
Reboot recovery, Restore, you should now see the folder named A as an option. Hit that, and it should auto select System and nothing else. I did md5 check option. Slide to restore. Wait. Wait. Wait. Reboot.
If you're lucky, you'll see the boot animation and hopefully boot back into Android. It'll take a while the first go too so be patient.
Or, I have a buddy with a Verizon Dev Edition in close proximity... can he just make a backup in TWRP and then I could restore it?
Or is there a way to pull the System.img from his device and flash to mine?
Or how about the system.img from T-mobile? Could I flash that? Or... that wouldn't help would it...

Yeah, he's on 4.4.2 already as well. He's making a TWRP backup of just System. So I guess I need to figure out how to get the folder hierarchy and the TWRP backup files onto my device. I assume through ADB somehow?
Also, I did grab the 4.4.2 OTA zip file before doing all this, so I have the update zip, but I don't think that helps me either does it?
Am I missing something, can't you just flash back system images from moto?
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images
Just realized only 4.4 images are posted.
fml
yeah, I realized I could just make a TWRP backup of my empty partitions to get the folder hierarchy made. So now all I should need to do is figure out how to either:
A. Push a folder and sub-folders/files via ADB or
B. Create folders in ADB then push the files to the folders
Sounding good?

From all I've read and understand, once you upgrade to 4.4.2, the bootloader also gets updated, and the new bootloader isn't backwards compatible, so you can't flash any images older than 4.4.2 else you'll brick somehow.
Just out of curiosity, anyone know how long it takes for factory images to be posted? I assume a metric &#@$ tonne of crap has to be done to get the files and poo from Verizon to Motorola to host.
Yeah. I'm pretty sure TWRP has already made the folder hierarchy for me. I think I just need to get my buddy's TWRP files and then push that folder to the device via ADB with "adb push /TWRP/BACKUPS /mnt/sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS"
Yeah, I think maybe it's a folder with the device's serial number? T-something?
Okay so can you post the hierarchy I need to make? TWRP>BACKUPS>SERIAL#>BACKUPNAME>Backup Files?
Okay, I've got his TWRP backup of just system downloaded, 3 files. I booted into TWRP recovery and in the mounts sections, I mounted data. Now I can navigate the data folders via ADB shell. I've created a new backup folder "B". Now I think I just need to push the 3 backup files into that folder. Backup folder "A" was the one I made to get TWRP to auto-make the folder hierarchy.
How do I unmount now that I've pushed files?
Not that I can find.
I've got all the files/folders pushed and made. My phone is connected via USB and is in TWRP recovery. If I hit a volume button I get a gray screen with just "Updating partition details... Full SELinux support is present." I don't know what to do from here. I can still do "adb shell" and see my data partition in my command window...
Haven't tried, afraid to lose what I've done so far. If I back out to Restore in TWRP, the directories/backups don't show. I think it's cause my /data is mounted and being used by my PC so TWRP can't see the partition?
Believe it or not, I did this exact something, not paying attention and boom system wiped. I have been a lurker on XDA for years and years and never needed an account because I have never made a stupid mistake like this in the past.
I contacted Moto to see if they would bail me out, but if not I will just wait out the factory image its a tough lesson.
I have reverted back to my my old AOKPs3 until i can get this all figured out.
*I will be watching this to see if you figure it out, and if so maybe you can help me.
GL.
Fingers crossed. Backed out to main TWRP home screen, powered off. Booted back into recovery, Restore tab, my folder showed up with the System backup in there, restoring now...
Success!!!

there should be a popup warning saying when you wipe your system you run the risk of losing your OS or whatever something shorter, but enough of a warning that it would cause people to stop and think if this was what they intended to do.

Question | how to extract an android backup that i made before updating

hi,
so heres the deal,
before oem unlocking, installing twrp, installing modify rom. (with out ads)
i did a backup of my phone via recovery mode.
it created 6 files userdata_xxxx_xxxx.backup (.backup 0 to 6) in total of 11.4GB , i have tried to see if its a tar file, i tried to open it with 7zip and tried to dd the first 512bytes , nothing worked.
i would like to know how can i extract / view /open these backups that i made to restore some pictues, since twrp wont recognize the backup that i've made with the stock recovery , i dont want to erase the files and data that i have at the moment so i would not restore it right into the phone , so manual way is only way.
i am on win10 and linux
after omit all the packages as one
doing file gave me this userdata_xxxx_xxxx.backup: Linux rev 1.0 ext4 filesystem data, UUID=57f8f4bc-abf4-655f-bf67-946fc0f9f25b (needs journal recovery) (errors) (extents) (large files)
trying to mount with mount -t ext4 -o loop,rw userdata_xxxx_xxxx.backup "tmp" gave me an empty result "empty thumb drive"
help will be appreciate thanks alot!

read through this thread.

it covers this situation. There is a script to automate this on post 17, I have not tried, but comments show it works

I know you said you have data currently on phone you dont want to loose. But it seems it might be easier to make twrp backup of phone now. then put factory recovery on and restore that back up you have from before , save off it what you wanted, then put twrp back and restore the twrp backup.
where do i get the factory recovery img ?
also thats sound alot more easier to extract/view the data instead of removing everything that i have now :S
when using file the output is that
userdata_xxxx_xxxx.backup: Linux rev 1.0 ext4 filesystem data, UUID=57f8f4bc-abf4-655f-bf67-946fc0f9f25b (needs journal recovery) (errors) (extents) (large files)
this file was made by the bash script bckp2cwm.sh

Of course it sounds easier to just mount the backup and browse for the files. But you are not able to do it, so not an option.
I have the stock recovery , will post a link when I get home tonight, if still needed by then

that one should be ok. but large download for only small needed file.
here is recovery from 6.1
unzip it and use "fastboot boot" to test boot it. should also be able to use it for restore without flashing it.

use fastboot.
power off phone. Power on while holding volume up.
you get a boot menu
use volume to select fastboot, power to select
connect phone to usb. Open terminal window , verify connected to phone, and confirm drivers, type "fastboot devices"
as long as connection return with "fastboot" and your "serial number" it is working.
type "fastboot boot ENTER FILE NAME AND LOCATION OF DOWNLOADED RECOVERY"
