I agree its getting old. It seems like every time I go into the market I have to sift through 15 themes to find anything good.

what's worse is that a lot of them are made by the same people. RSD keeps making themes for the phone and then selling them for a dollar. i'm sorry but i don't think you should charge for a theme, no matter how much work you did. i make themes too but i'm not gonna tell people that they have to give me money in order to try it. most themers do the stuff cause it's fun not cause they wanna get rich
It's easy money. Make a theme, upload it, charge 99c and make some money... now everyone is on it. Tis a shame they isnt more categories on Market, so many of them are misplaced. I wonder if Google plan on doing anything about it? You can literally spend 10-15mins scrolling down until you reach the bottom.

Then there are the comic books, the other day there had to be like 20 of them submitted at once.
In some ways the 'openness'* is part of the problem. I've not investigated how you put a program etc on market place and what the uploader has to do, to charge but it seems like people can charge what they want. I saw one earlier which seemed to be pictures of cars (and another for bikes) and he wanted $4.99.
I wish it was a little more regulated... I never thought I'd say that!! or atleast no facility to charge for apps.

There is actually nothing open about the market. For example, if the market had an api, I could write an alternative market client with a capability to filter out all these annoying themes/videos/comics. The point is that the market, like GMail and all the other closed applications on the G1's Android build, is a closed value-added product.
Unfortunately since Market client is closed-source, we can only hope Google gets the message and builds in some sort of filtering in a future version. They did pretty promptly address the comment spam issue, which shows some promise.
I too am sick of the themes and everything else associated with the alternate home screens. Hopefully as the market matures they will address the issue.
If you're like me you get really pissed that you can't download GMM [easily] on Opera or PIE6 or your computer without spoofing your user agent. So because I love you guys and I like starting threads I went onto Fmstrat's badass RegistryChanger site to create an IE version rollback (attached) and got the cab for the latest Google Maps, v3.0.1.5, for y'all to download here.
No idea what improvements this has over 3.0.1.4, probably nothing you'll notice, but hey, this is xda, gotta have the latest build of anything, right?

Is there anyway to get gmaps to automatically upgrade itself? I couldn't find the option anywhere.
Nope, not to my knowledge, and given that putting an auto-update thing for a popular program weighing in at a megabyte for cell phones that often have slow connections or expensive connections (like when people travel overseas), you'll get too many people complaining about sneaky updating tactics and writing slashdot articles. Not to mention 99% of gmm users out there wouldn't notice the difference between this version and a several month old version and it probably wouldn't generate much more revenue for Google to force (or assist) everybody to update to the newest build.
On the other hand, it would be nice for us if we could get the google people to give this thing apptodate support. Why not. It would of course also be nice if a lot more devs would do that. Doesn't sound too hard... c'mon, devs, apptodate.

Yes, it's got Latitude. Just like Street View, they'll soon stop going out of their way to announce that each version has Latitude.
So uh, I saw the google now widget and decided to give it a try. Looks like it could have some useful info whenever you need it. Thing is, the widget only shows the weather, even on max size? It doesn't show anything else, like traffic, news, stocks etc. like in the widget preview.
Anyone else have this problem?
Its shows whatever cards you have in Google now. If you only have weather, it will only show weather.
The more you use it... and allow it to see... the more useful it becomes. It's learned by my locations where work and home is and always gives a card of what traffic is like and what my ETA is. It knows the sports teams I like and pops up info about them. It grows in usefulness over time. It can take a few weeks.
Tinfoil hat-wearing paranoids need not apply. It will collect and aggregate info about you.
I'm not impressed thus far, some options aren't functional yet where I live (Europe), I guess it needs further development. I'll try it again in a few months.

Same here in Germany, it just barely works, weather and traffic that is. Everything else is basically non-existant.
It hasn't really progressed for us europeans since it was released, so i'm not getting my hopes up for future improvements.
Europe is, as usual, neglected when it comes to things like these.
I played with it briefly on a custom 4.2.1 rom, surprised that it still functioned. For me, it's a matter of privacy and how much I WANTED to share & let "them" know as they are already using whatever data/access/bits being generated, with this AI "sniffing" my moves based on the device while it's "connected" - so that everyone from that discrete building somewhere in the Far East to our own N S A or C I A can easily monitor and track at will with minimal to no efforts at all - in the name of homeland sec*#*#* by surrendering access to this cute 7" blackbox.
Think about all the personal & sensitive info that we stored on it, and if not really - think again. That's the price for innovation & liberty, I suppose ...
Now, if it's going to alert me to the danger of Noro-virus the next time I leave a pubic restroom and forgot to do a proper handwash, and beep me about enhanced contact precaution - I would say, job well done on making lives better for us. Until then, I remain guarded on whether I wanted to breach it - so, I re-opted "maybe, later"
i am one of the people who dodnt really care if google knows where my home/work locations, etc are. So, I let google now learn everything it can about me. Some things i find cool are...
if I search in google (desktop or mobile) for say, train schedules, or railroad news, next time I am near the train station or headed to it, it will show me topic related to the railroad and/or the schedule.
It has learned where I practice archery and my friends houses too. I visit both of these places on a pretty set schedule. Whenever it thinks I am about to leave, it shows me the traffic. It's been pretty spot on lately.
If I read a news story on desktop google news, google now will show related stories.
If I search for a store or business on desktop google maps, google now will tell me the traffic from my current location and has a nice handy "navigate" button there ready for me

HP is shutting down WebOS on January 15,I have 2 Touchpads,one is unopened sitting in a draw for 2 years.Should I do anything special before the shutdown?
I only use it as a web browser on wifi when on the road at work,and from day 1,it has been barely adequate,and from day one it has not been functional on many websites,and seems to be more incompatible with other sites as time goes on.Is there any reason to keep WebOS,or should I just convert it to Android...and is there any rush for me to do anything,like any downloads or apps before the 15th?

It seems most of the useful services will be shut down at the same time (including the app catalog and alarmingly, but not surprisingly, any password recovery). So basically, after the 15th you'll be a bit stuck.
As for whether you should get rid and use android, i think you answered your own question. You only have 1 function and it doesn't perform that to your satisfaction. I would suggest switching to Android, at least you can dual boot and give it a go. I currently use Lolipop on mine. Whilst not as smooth or aesthetically 'nice' as webos, i find it far more functional.

And hahaha,yes I guess I kind of answered my own question about keeping WebOS versus moving it to Android. and yes,my dissatisfaction of the WebOS browser started the day I turned it on about 2 years ago,and found it would not render the National Weather Service website correctly...apparently not compatible with how most government websites are written.Being in the construction industry,I am hitting up that website a few times a day,to plan out the day,and that site is by far the most useful and accurate.
I guess my next question is...How will this touchpad run on Android,and what limitations or glitches can I anticipate with it as a web browser? I just want to be sure I can install and chase down any problems with my simple and rudimentary skillset.
I can only speak from my own experience, although if you look through this forum sub-section + the ones for a particular ROM you are considering (in the development) it would give you a good idea.
I have used various ROMS (mostly derivatives of Cyanogenmod). It started out a bit shakey, which is understandable, on version 7 but now it is up to 12 and i don't really find i have any day to day issues. The ageing hardware does struggle a bit if you have a load of widgets on the home screens and background apps running but from the sounds of what you want i don't expect an issue. There are also a lot of various different android weather apps that should suit your needs without even having to visit a website.
The installation/removal is fairly straightforward now with step by step guides on doing it. Look at the threads about TPtoolbox. This is a very straightforward tool.
Also if you try it before March you can always revert if you want to.

To start: I've been highly anticipating this phone. I've had two Google Pixel 3 XLs that my SO and I have been using since release day. Probably one of the best overall phones I've owned, first phone to make it past the two year mark before attempting replacement. I've had cell phones since 1996 mind you (I was in high school at the time and lucky enough to have a job in web development / system administration and I was on-call for the company I was employed by, but I digress). Anyway...
I've worked in enterprise security (consultant, FTE and on the vendor side) for the bulk of my professional career post-college. I've been, generally, OK with both Android and IOS over the years - give or take different areas of concern/complaint. I own a number of iPads and iPhones currently, but my daily driver is the P3XL.
I didn't realize Samsung was as bad as they currently are for hidden apps and outlandish permissions in their own ecosystem of software.
The first problem I noticed was that Facebook is installed by default. Red flag. I uninstalled and immediately went to look through the system apps to validate there were no other Facebook components lying around. And there are. There are three Facebook components you cannot uninstall but can only disable: Facebook App Installer, Facebook App Manager and Facebook Services. If you're keeping your Galaxy S21 and don't use Facebook I'd recommend disabling them and validating background data is disabled as they may be reenabled on system updates (I'm not sure if that's true or not). The reality is they very well could be and you wouldn't know it - given the circumstances I'd err on the side of trust - but definitely verify.
The second problem I ran into was Microsoft OneDrive. Again, not able to uninstall it - you can disable it. Obviously these apps are all part of the system image and is the reason you can't actually remove them. FFS.
The third, and final nail, is Bixby Voice. This app cannot be uninstalled, cannot be disabled and all permissions are immutable (meaning they cannot be changed). I understand Samsung is, and has been, trying to force Bixby on it's users for years. I thought Samsung had moved on and relinquished control. I was, unfortunately, wrong. Final nail in the coffin for me.
So... Does Google do this on Pixel devices? Sure, to an extent with Google components. Does Apple do this on IOS? Yes. The difference is that the Google apps on a Pixel device aren't harboring controls that can't be overridden. I can turn off permissions on the "Google" app, say - the microphone permission, even though it may break functionality. I can live with that. But I'm not OK with giving control up to something like Bixby Voice that has, literally, every permission 24/7.
I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the complacency involved with being OK with this and that's the rationale for returning the device. So, Samsung, if you're reading this (who am I kidding, you're not) - what an amazing phone with regard to the hardware. Truly top notch, truly polished and pushes all of the right buttons. You didn't lose a customer because the phone wasn't designed well. You lost a customer because it's clear that on top of the $1200+ phone you have the audacity to treat your customers as if they don't care - that they're not concerned with privacy in the least, and you clearly don't want them to be given what you've delivered. The reality is Google isn't a bastion of hope in that department either. Nor is Apple. But the Pixel line and IOS devices give end users a level of control if they're willing to give up features or functionality. I'd be fine with Bixby being on the phone if I could disable it and know that it's not able to phone home. But that's not possible sans drastic measures. Measures that would lock me out of functionality I do use.
So Samsung. No, you don't get my money and a complacent response to your privacy ignorant stance. I won't waste my time with the Samsung brand moving forward. I'm in agreement with your view regarding Samsung's dedicated apps, particularly when they dont require permissions however you may be able to scrub the device with the process outlined here.

apart from being unable to disable Bixby or revoke permissions from Bixby I dont see what your actual problem is?
Yes, FB and 3x services are installed but as you rightly stated they can all be disabled. Problem solved
Whilst Bixby cannot be disabled, you can pretty much limit where it is in use... e.g. set Google Assistant as default.
I have worked in I.T. for almost 40 years and although not in the field of I.T. security like yourself, I think I know enough about the topic to secure my home devices like phones computers and routers.
Samsung is not perfect but they are a heck of a lot better than most smartphone manufacturers.... 3 years OS upgrades, monthly security patching on the S and Z ranges, etc.
Just my own personal thoughts, don't shoot me for wondering if perhaps you are overly sensitive being an ITSEC professional.

I'd be fine with Bixby being on the phone if I could disable it and know that it's not able to phone home. But that's not possible sans drastic measures. Measures that would lock me out of functionality I do use.
So Samsung. No, you don't get my money and a complacent response to your privacy ignorant stance. I won't waste my time with the Samsung brand moving forward. I hope others voice their concern and skip Samsung until these things are handled correctly. I know I'm a minority at this point in time, but the tides are slowly changing.

Samsung's Facebook contract is ending soon.
But, I don't care because I always disabled Facebook like you said anyways. I have a thread about it here somewhere.
As far as Bixby is concerned: I disable it as much as possible from within the phone. I see no evidence that it is actually running though. The OS says it isn't using ANY RAM ever. Also, you can just use ADB to disable it.
Go to the Samsung Privacy Center and the Do Not Sell site to maximize your privacy settings if you like.

Guys, OP just came here to throw some shade at Samsung, vent some frustration and never came back for a discussion. New member. This is his only post on xda. It was obviously a hit and run stunt.
The guy who started the fire has left and in his place, we're sitting here fighting and bickering about stuff like communism?
