Home button default - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Recently, I've been getting a slight glitch (don't know if that's the proper word) after holding down the home button to view recent apps. After doing it, and pressing the home button to go back to home, I get the pop-up box to select the default home. It seems that every time I view recent apps, it erases the default home... I tried uninstalling home++, which is what I use, using a different home alternative, and the same happens.
Anyone else have this problem?
This might be a simple error on my part.
Edit- I check it to be default, but viewing recent apps seems to erase the default option.

When you press home there should be a box with default box to check. If check then the default or alternative home replacement should now be the default return when going home.

Checking the box doesn't do anything... viewing recent apps erases the default home setting.

Update
I wiped and am still getting the same issue.
I'm running cyanogen latest...
this started happening randomly, and I've tried to find the cause but haven't been able to...
is anyone else having this issue?

Same issue here on two phones I hadn't correlated it to the holding of the home button but I just tested it and that is the problem. This is annoying, I don't have many shared apps between the two phones either to blame.

"OK" Button Not Right on Tilt Since ROM Update

I updated my Tilt's ROM to the latest version, doing the reset trick to skip installing the AT&T bloatware just as I had done with the previous ROM version.
All seems well, except that my "OK" button no longer works like it used to. When I press it now, it minimizes/hides some applications instead of closing them out. Previously, it closed them (like tapping the "X" does). Is there a way to fix this without installing the AT&T software?
What's interesting is that it works correctly with some apps, but not with others. For example, if I have the camera or phone dialer up, pressing the OK button completely closes them. But if I have Pocket IE up, pressing OK only minimizes/hides it.
go into task manager. goto options, then make sure "press and hold X to close" is not selected. if it is, select the other one and it should work.
Thanks for the tip. I just checked, and "End programs by tapping 'X'" is selected (not "End programs by tapping and holding 'X'").
So theoretically, things should be working--but they're not. In addition to PIE not closing using the OK button, I just noticed that File Explorer doesn't, either.
I suppose you could try using Quickmenu (attached), this also has options regarding the "X to close" command. Give it a try if you want, I personally can't live without it
HButton all the way, I have my ok button set to <ok/close> if i tap it and <quit> if I hold it.

Thanks--I'll check that out.

Unable to set default home

Just as the title says, I'm not able to set my default home permanently, e.g. launcher pro instead of tw.
I hit the "set default home" button and it does register as my default home, however after opening certain apps or holding the home button(to bring up list of last opened apps) the save is gone and the pop up will prompt me to select my default home again.
A weird thing is that when I hold the home button the default home prevoiusly selected comes up as a choice as one of my last open aplications.
Itsreally getting irritating as I have to keep selecting my default home. This bug happened only after using jm5 + oclf for aroumd 2-3 momths and still persisted after I flashed jp6
Have you tried 'Home Switcher' from the Market?
Yes, however after setting the default home to my favourite launcher it will revert back to no default home again.
Anyway, I found how to fix it.
I froze the launchers I weren't using with titanium which then allowed to go back to one home only.
I assume this could be a hardware problem? My memory chip or something may have been corrupted after using oclf for too long

You cannot solve this type of problem with setting default home with any app like 'Home Switcher'.

Yes, it is a possible "solution". But it cannot help you when you want to use more than one launcher for example. The reason for this problem is that you install in your phone some badly written application. The error is located in this bad app in AndroidManifest.xml file which is integral component of every application on Android. The developer of app defined there wrong <intent-filter> for activity which has something to do with the home app. See more about AndroidManifest.xml here: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/manifest/manifest-intro.html.
I have found this thread because I have the same problem as you. I remember that it started to bother me one week ago. I didn't find any solution, so I must go on my own way. When I get a time to solve this bug I decided to start with frozing every application which I have installed last week. And guess what happened? The problem disappeared. Then I defrosted just one frozen app after another and every time I test it with long press and then immediately with short press of home button to see if setting of the default launcher is still persistent. If it was ok I repeated this procedure and defrosted one more app and within a few iterations I quickly identify app which was source for this error. It was a graphic calculator which even doesn't use any permission, so who will guess that such an innocent application could behave so badly and could have deleted the default launcher setting? I definitely won't. Finally I froze only this badly behave app and the error has gone away. I informed the developer and now this calculator app is corrected in a new update so I can use it again without any collision with my launcher apps.

[Q] Disappearing launcher problem + maps problem

Hi,
I'm using stock 2.3.3 w/ stock launcher, build GRI40. Occasionally, when I press home, I see my live wallpaper but no launcher. I either have to sit for a while until launcher reappears or reboot the phone (or kill the launcher app if System is in app history). Does anyone else have this problem?
Another problem I have is with Maps. Sometimes when searching, the soft keyboard doesn't show up but if I tap where the keys would be, it registers the press as if the kb is there.
And sometimes when going into the details for a point in the map and bringing up the context menu for more options, the screen darkens as if the dialog is there but no dialog is shown. Again, when I tap the screen, it registers the presses as if the dialog is there. I'm using HTC IME mod for N1. Killing the map app doesn't help, only a reboot seems to solve it.
Anyone else having these issues?
Are any of these apps installed on your SD? That would be the obvious fix...

No, all on the internal memory. This is stock Android so stock apps can't be moved to the sd card.
When you update from the Market, the update is placed in /data/app, not system/app, so it's possible your Maps is in data. I know that was a source of Maps problems for me, which I resolved by moving it back to system. If you're not rooted, you don't have that option through... Tricky... :-/

I know that I've been having problems with the new keyboard, wont show up, wont show key press popups, crashes completely. Maybe it's something I'm doing... I think it's something system wide that just effects the keyboard workings.
I don't know. but you're not the only one with key board issues. =)

I've started having a strange problem with HTC IME Mod. I type stuff and it never draws the suggestions although the suggestions are actually there - moving the Dpad left/right shows the text being replaced in the input box with the suggestion.
This is starting to look like a GB issue tbh, I never had any of these problems in Froyo. All my stuff is stock.

I saw this problem once, about 24 hours after installing 2.3.3. I was also experiencing severe battery drain. The battery monitor showed "Android OS" using most the battery. I found references to setting the Wi-Fi sleep policy to "Never" to correct this. Sure enough, the battery life has been fine and "Android OS" no longer uses much battery.
It may be coincidental, but since doing this, I haven't had the empty home screen problem and my phone has been up for over a week. You might give this a try if you haven't already and see if it helps.

[Q] Messaging quits immediately

(Sorry if this has been covered before - I couldn't find anything by searching!)
When I go into the default 'Messaging' app on my Galaxy S (to write a text message), it often quits out, more or less immediately back to the home screen.
It isn't like a force close or a crash/freeze, but as though someone has pressed the back or home button to return to the home screen. Sometimes I can go back in no problems, other times this cycle goes on for a few times until I can successfully open the messaging app long enough to write a message.
Does anyone know what causes this and if there is a workaround?
I'm running Gingerbread.XXJVQ and ADW EX as my custom launcher if that helps.
Wow. Third thread... Not quite the same but similar thing happening over here

I can not get to the settings on my KFHD

Folks;
For some reason, I can no longer get to the settings on my KFHD 7 any longer. As well, the buttons that usually appear on the bottom of the screen (Home, and the like) no longer show there - except briefly at times.
Is there some other way to get into settings for this device? I'd like to perform a factory reset, but can't get to it.
TIA;
Patrick
Are you rooted? Do you have gmail installed? I noticed gmail will glitch the notification bar at times.
if you installed GMail, try opening it and then exiting. That usually clears up the disappearing status bar for me. If hit, try holding the power button to do a re boot. Maybe twice.

The device is rooted, has GAPPs. Starting Gmail doesn't seem to clear this up.
I note that when I start Gmail, the icons flash in for a moment, and then disappear. They also do the same if I select 'Setting' from the Gmail menu upper right.

tried the Gmail app start to bring back the system menu. No joy. Have rebooted a number of times; sometimes by holding the power button until the device shuts off, most times by holding the power button, and selecting 'shut down' from the menu that appears. No luck with that, either.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Same thing happened to me. Turns out anytime GMail got mail it touched the notification bar. Going into GMail and reading the new message Fixed it. I turned off notifications for GMail and no problems since.

I suggest you turn off notification for all apps you have loaded or updated. Then go into each app and close out all pending notices like unread chat threads of phone messages. One of your apps is trying to display an alert that is bugging the notifications bar.
You can try to find a settings shortcut app or if you install a secondary launcher, you can get it in from their settings screen. I'm not sure if ADW launcher EX had that option but I just installed Go Launcher EX and the settings drawer button will take you to the stock kindle settings page.

Also, you can try NookColor Tools - it will give you access to all settings.

How do you turn off notifications? If that's in settings, I can start settings. If it's in the Gmail app, then it's too late, as I already uninstalled it.
It's a poser. Thinking now about how to uninstall other google things (framekwork, etc.) to try an clear this.

Drag down from the top of the screen. Select more, then applications, then notification settings. Un check all or most and test
A factory reset wouldn't be too bad, unless you put a TON of things on there and it's just too much work. I did a factory reset on mine already. When I was playing around and trying out different combinations and what works and what not, some how I had used up 3 GB of data already Also if anything was broke, it should be cleared out and just watch each app you install. I had to do that to figure out my battery drain problem.
I figured out what I wanted to install and the correct way of getting certain apps installed, I haven't reached 1 GB of used data yet. I'm glad to have done a reset.

I'd love to be able to do this. That's the problem, though, is that I can't get to the settings on this tablet. Is there some other way to start this app?

If there's some way to do a factory reset without using the settings, I'd do it. I'm not worried about re-installing.
I think the problem started when Amazon turned off the advertisement/lock screen. Before then, all was working well.
Since this started, I've un-installed as many apps a I can. Does anyone know how to uninstall something that doesn't show up in the 'apps' section of the phone?

In my case the top bar was available for a few seconds after rebooting. Enough time to clear notifications. It didn't bug until the first notification posted to the top bar.

There were many suggestions already on how to get to the settings page so you can do a system restore. I know for a fact you can do it with go launcher ex.
ADW launcher EX will probably do the same thing also. Just click on the three bar on the top right corner when it's installed and running and I believe there was an option to select settings, then you can get to the amazon system restore page.
Problem solved. I was trying to side-load a launcher to see if it would expose some way to get to the 'settings' on the KFHD, and I was told that loading of foreign apps was disabled. When I clicked OK to change that setting, it took me to a section of the settings that allowed me to reset the KFHD to factory default. I did so, and everything seems to be working again.
Maybe this will help anyone else with the issue.

Gmail notification plays with the notification bar and even clears the custom kindle name to "My Kindle". Removed the gmail notification from Gamil app to fix the issue.:good:
