aDroid 0.0.5 - The Ad Blocker 7/16/2010 - Droid Eris Themes and Apps

Please report bugs and ads here http://tinyurl.com/ReportAds or use the in app option.
THIS IS EARLY ALPHA TESTING, IT WILL NOT BLOCK ALL ADs. REPORT ADs THAT SHOW UP PLEASE.
This is an early public alpha test, the ad database is VERY Small and will not block many ads. The purpose of this test is to build up the ad database. I need people to use, and then report what APPs they still see ads in.
Unlike other adblockers, this app does not edit files on your system, and can thus work with nand locked devices. Requires root.
Please read the license before enabling ad blocking. By using this software, you agree to report ads that show up in APPs to me.
I will enable the widgets, and on boot and other options after the ad list is built up to reasonable size.

Yeah, hence the quandary (right word??)
Release it because i like the idea of modding android, or not because I support developers.

Now blocking adshare in apps as well, this could get interesting.

Can you block ads in all apps except this one?

What? It removes all in apps.

Just thinking that you could block all except this app so yours would be the only one with ads. A way for revenue.

Release it; because I support developers too, but not through ads. I've paid for a few apps, not because I had to but because they were good. If a developer wants to make money on his app, and it's good, then they need to put a decent price on it, and sell it.... not make us stare at ads that take up screen space.

I agree.

Update, another dev is rolling it into an APP, for rooted phones only (atleast for now, and will work for all rooted android devices).
Will have some new features.

addfree!? Thought this has been around for awhile now?

Dangraef,
By far its not adfree.
AdFree blocks sites using a large hosts file. Take this advice from a netadmin, a LARGE host file will slow down resolve time, and also what if content you actually want is stored in those 20,000+ blocked domains in the host file?
With a large host file, you DNS client has to search said file each and everytime it resolve a new domain. If one device has a 1000, 5,000 20,000 or 50,000 line hosts file, and one has a 1 line hosts file....which is gunna win the race?
I am using a new method, does NOT slow down resolve time, it does cut out ads, and bandwidth usage (Speeding up connection).
Editors Note: in most cases a large HOSTS file (over 135 kb) tends to slow down the machine. <- straight from the horsed mouth on blocking with a hosts file. http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Now that I have said that, use what works for you. I really don't recommend a large hosts file, neither will any competent admin.

I haven't personally used adfree. I saw it when I was researching this, almost didn't do this until someone told me how it worked.
Everyone says adfree works great, go give it a try, then come beta test our's when its released.

Can't wait! Thanks jcase for all of your hard work, you and the other devs have made my first experience with a smart phone the best ever.

I don't like to use host file to block AdMob as it causes the advertisement part of an app to display an-ugly-error-page-with-white-background ads instead of originally a quite beautiful advertisement.
I'd love to use this new app which block ads without the aforementioned ugly effect.

It's coming, we need naming suggestions, feature requests.

Paid Apps/Games Reviews

Paid apps are here. You need to sign up here to purchase apps checkout.google.com After youve signed up when you purchase app/game it will verify card then install normally just like any other market app/game. If you see a 1.00 charge on account that is google verifying funds, not to worry it technically isn't charged at all and will disappear in a day or so. All apps/games are fully refundable within 24 hours so even if you dont like it no worries which i think is pretty awesome of google! Once your G1 shows paid apps in market, reboot your phone and a new option will be in menu that gives you the option to either view free, paid or all apps. Worked for me anyways! Oh and they update like most normal apps do, just got update this morning. NON U.S. g1's can't get paid apps
I thought it would be a good idea to get a thread going on all the paid apps/games available out there for the G1. I have wasted some money on garbage and if i or any of us can save someone wasting their hard earned money on trash why not right?? Recommend an app/game as well, not much out yet but hey good for future use as well
Paid App Reviews
I think it would be a good idea for us to review paid applications on these forums, since the Market typically gets flooded with "first" spam and other nonsense.
To do this we would need a template to rate the applications, I suggest the following:
------------
Name: <Name of the App>
Type: <What kind of App it is>
Cost: <Price of the App>
Rating: <Your review, please keep this on a 1 thru 10 system>
<Any comments you have about the App>
------------
Please keep this thread organized and follow the template laid out above.
And screenshots would also be awesome...
Don't know how easy it would be though.
Nice to know the refund thing works though.
Name: Prime Full
Type: Game
Cost: About .79 US
Rating: 4/5
Comments: I was a big fan of the free version (not Lite version). The only drawback to that was that you couldn't get past lvl 59. The full version seems way better. Allows you to change between two backrounds, and gives you multiple shots as you get highter. A nice feature, but currently makes it easier. We shall see how it goes on the later levels. For 79 cents, it's was worth it just to try out the buying experience.

Good idea, I just posted a quick screenshot of it. Unfortunately screenshot was acting a little weird and I only got back "black" screens every time so I did this one using a timed delay, so I couldnt really get into a song.
Name: Bettercut
Type: Tool
Cost: $2.99
Rating: 10
Comments: This app is just like anycut but BETTER it allows you to have "custom" icons to replace the default app icons on your homescreen with any icon you find online or make yourself, its very nice to have matching icons on my homescreen now =D

This is a fantastic strategy game with a risk-like concept. Great thing about this game is that there's a demo. Try it out, if you like it, buy it! The full version adds world domination mode (As opposed to race to 100 pts), and different eras you can play in (Changes the amount of factions, etc). There is a currently inactive spot for online multiplayer, which hopefully they'll add soon. If you like strategy games, give this one a go!
Name: Retro Defense
Type: Game
Cost: $4.99
Rating: 7/10
This is probably the cleanest tower defense game I've played. Reminds me of Vector TD. This is a huge upgrade from the lite version as you get tons of levels. There are still just the 3 towers (3 ranks each) and the slow tower, could probably use more. This game would be a 10/10 if it was $1-2.
Name: QuickOffice
Type: App

Full editable office app for G1. Alllows editing of Word and Excel files. Will also open attachments from Gmail.

I heard this program doesnt allow you to edit only allows you to view and thats what it says in the description also.
Name: Guitar Hero: World Tour Mobile
Type: Game
Cost: $9.99
Rating: 7/10
The game is ok, with only three notes and no true "strumming" action it feels kinda bland. The biggest drawback is it's price. At $9.99 its a pretty expensive game for what it currently offers. Unfortunetly this was my first paid app and I mis-clicked refund/uninstall on the market and got a refund before I could really even play. Doing this voids you from getting any future refunds of that particular app. All in all it's Guitar Hero for your phone, with free monthly updates.
1.) Word to the mods! Either make this thread a sticky, or one like it because a Paid Apps Review thread is sticky worthy! Also I expect to see this topic get a lot more action within the next week.
2.) I've paid for BetterCut and Advanced Task Manager, both of them at reasonable prices and both quality apps. There are garbage paid apps out there, most of them should be a dead giveaway from the title alone, but some are not. For BetterCut, I would recommend this app to anyone and give it 5 out 5 stars. The only added value I see would be if it included stock icons (like iPhone icons). Advanced Task Manager is great as well, but its true value is for rooted phones. Like Task Manager before, it gives you the capability to kill apps if you're rooted (no dirty pun intended) ;-)
3.) There should be a way for theme developers to now start charging for their themes, of course warning the customer that they only work with rooted G1s, and make some money for their hard efforts. Theme devs, I hope you're paying attention, I would be willing to shell out a few bucks for some very nice themes!
Advanced Task Manager

Comments Well worth it its alot of fun, awesome ui! Big game however but most good ones are. Only complaint is skipping option, needs to skip to end of hand versus having to skip every turn of dealers cards. Give it a 8/10

Certain Apps Blocked if have root

Word is spreading that certain apps in the market are kept away from root users due to copy protection now that certain root users can copy apps to the card. If this is true, that sucks. This would mean that if you buy an app then get root, or upgrade your root to a new version, like jf 1.3 to 1.41 etc, you can't reinstall the app. If this is true, JF, please find a way so that a wipe is not needed to upgrade your roms.

No, the OP is correct. I have rooted jf rc33 and can only see a subset of the paid apps, not all.
My wife's g1 with rooted jf rc33 can see all the paid apps, but my g1 can only see a subset.
There is something going on
If you continue reading the post, you'll see that people are saying that there are more paid apps on non rooted phones then on rooted phones. It seems that app creators might have the right to copy protect their apps.

Not True. I'm running ADP1.1h and I have all the paid apps. I compared it to a non-rooted G1 as well as at www.cyrket.com.
The other thing that post says is that Dev or Rooted phones can't download Shazam which I also have on my phone because we can pull the app off the phone and distribute it or whatever. You don't have to have a rooted phone to pull apps off the device it can be done with Astro right off the market so ppl are just spreading rumors without any proof.

For a stock G1 you do need root to backup protected apps. Though not all paid apps are protected, so you can obviously back those up without root.
I haven't downloaded any paid apps as nothing other than BetterCut has really caught my yet, and from what i can see is bettercut has been removed from the market can't find in on either phone. But Shazam was given as an example as a Protected App and I just with Astro backed it up to the memory card and from there put it on my computer on a non-rooted G1 and was able to reinstall it back on the device.
There are some obvious holes in the market and it is terrible for Google to assume that we(rooted Devices) are all pirates and out to scan and steal from the devs which is ridiculous. Not the reason in my eyes to have a rooted device.

Shazam (the most updated one, updated via market) on my phone is not protected. So I'm not sure if I can vouch for that...
Try backing up Inaugural Address 2009 or Phandroid News, both are free protected apps. Astro should (will) fail on a none rooted one.
As for "from what i can see is bettercut has been removed from the market can't find in on either phone", it's appearing on my phone and my brothers right now (rooted and stock).

If your performing a back up on the phone than you can view inside /data/app-private, then you *should* be able to back it up.

Wow, they finally got around to basic functionalities after three years. Functionalities that Symbian and WinMo were doing since forever. Very revolutionary and magical. Color me awed.
Just about the only thing Android needs to do to "catch up" is a better multi-tasking UI. Then again, considering the iPhone OS 4.0 will handle a grand total of seven tasks--as opposed to Android showing the last six apps used--well...

Nope, you're not. However for the masses, this update will be very well received. Yes its ridiculous that they took so long to incorporate multitasking and folder functionality, but better late than never.
I was disappointed that there wasn't any interface change, the icon grids seem archaic. The iBook app will be huge. Overall, I think this is what most people were expecting in terms of a software update. The real big news will be whether a hardware update will accompany OS4 (unibody iPhone would be nice).
For now the Nexus still has an edge but the gap is narrowing

Yeah. I was thinking of the big things they could do on the hardware side, but I'm not entirely sure they want to split their market up. People are still using the iPhone 3G, if they do a massive upgrade on hardware, app developers will have to verify it works on 3 different platforms.
Maybe they are just planning on phasing out the 3G completely by next year (considering they were hinting at the lesser features for 3G's OS4), and then using the current 3GS as minimum spec. If they increase screen resolution, they'll have to write some scaling processes as well (a lot can be seen in the iPad)
They dropped the bomb until they put this dud out.
I own a bunch of Apple devices and Ive had an iPhone before. Im not a hater, I just dont think it's cutting edge anymore. I even have an iPad so you can't say Im an apple hater
Is just another iPhone... but still Google needs to get their act together in a few areas. I borrowed a N1 for few days and like it very much, but I have been reluctant to take the plunge because of the following shortcomings:
Google needs to allow Contacts, Tasks and Notes to sync to the N1 (locally and remotely) using Google apps. It also needs to either enhance the Calendar application or make it play nice with Outlook desktop calendar functions. Me and whole bunch of other people I know, are very comfortable with Outlook to manage their email, time, contacts and tasks. Help us migrate to Android and to the Google apps without so much fuzz. Don't leave it to third parties. I don't want to risk my critical data to a vendor that is here today, but might not be here tomorrow. I'm not very happy leaving all my critical data in the cloud, but if I'm going to do it... Google needs to help me get there. Security and the integrity of my data are important. I have confidence in Google, but not on third party vendors for this critical step.
The Music Player needs enhancement and a Google desktop application to manage one's Music Library and multiple playlist is needed. Most decent portable DAP have such application. Maybe Google can partner or acquire a vendor that knows how to do this right.
Just like the new iPhone the inbox of Android needs to be bit more friendly with other email service providers. As with the new IPhone OS 4, multiple Exchange servers should be supported along with the option to have multiple and merged inboxes.
I wonder if others feel the same way. I also know that there are other issues that need to be addressed, but in my case the top two are very important.
The soul purpose of this device is not meant to be a music player, Google does not (and I highly doubt they will) need to create an entire desktop application to move mp3s to the music folder where anyone with the right direction can do this. Managing playlist though is a different story, but I guess it is up to a third party application to do this.
Get a ipod or other portable music device if this is your wish.
Also, tamanaco, I believe Sense does most of what you said. Don't believe the Nexus is a very friendly business device...

I agree with you in that there's no need for them to boost their specs at this point, but I was referring more to a cosmetic facelift. The iPhone has pretty much looked the same for 3 years now and I think even Apple fanboys can agree that everyone is tired of the design.

So, if I understand you correctly... The N1 is "not" a Music Player... is "not" meant for business... and as you say is "not" for me. So, in your book it's only good to make calls and find yourself on a map? It's called a "Superphone"... What's else is it good for?

This is not an excuse IMO, the music player definitely needs an update. This is the one area where iPhone has a real advantage over Android. Most users would rather carry one device for everyday use, I know I certainly would.

[Q] Hypothetical, storing a file worth $50,000 on your phone

I'm debating buying a Chinese Cyanogenmod phone. That got me thinking about security. People have different ways of dealing with it. I tend to prefer trying to keep my main phone secure. If you have an unrooted iPhone do you prefer to do banking on that? Or a linux laptop? Or a blackberry? Or do you keep one phone particularly clean for this kind of thing?
Lets say you have a file worth $50,000 and you had to store it on a phone, what would you choose and why?
Hoping for a fun but heated civilised discussion, though one word answers are welcome :good:
Windows Phone. Apart from fact I love it anyway, no one cares about it, and you look more inconspicuous than if you had a BlackBerry. Bonus points if its also one of the last Nokia's, as it can be uses as a weapon in a pinch.

No system is secure.
All devices can be hacked.
For a 50,000$ file , an elaborate storage transfer can be executed ...I won't be using any phone to transfer it ...
A 50.000 quid file? I'd happily store it on my Note 3. Nobody expects an artist to carry a file lile that on a regular phone, I don't leave my phone anywhere, never hand it over, and I always have all connections off unless I'm using it. (I'm a bit ocd when it comes to batterylife.) And I always do my banking on it, just never over open/public wifi points.
And I'd disguise it as something else. I've had to deal with documents that required a confidentiality agreement, and my best method is renaming the entire file, including the extension, into something inconspicuous.
Nameless64.png (or .psd for a big file) is not going to stand out amongst the other 8900 nameless files in my 450 'New Folder's. (Yes, I'm hopeless at file management.)

This is true, that's why both shadowlea and I suggested looking inconspicuous instead of having the best file security. I personally chose windows phone because your less likely to be found on a random hacking attempt, as not enough people one to make hacking it worthwhile.
Definitely renaming it and changing the file extension should be done also.

And if you want to be really, really thorough, zip it, rar the zip, then zip it again, then rename it to a jpg or pdf or psd. (Or whatever is most likely to be on your system. PSD makes sense for a designer, but not for an engineer.).
That way they can't locate the file by scanning the device, as the code's changed as well. And double compress it, because you can't scan a compressed file inside a compressed file.
And yes, I have put far too much thought into this. :silly:
I would create and app to store that file, so the file is protected by Android permissions.
No, really, the best way is to encrypt it with a password or a password-protected key. In that case, no matter who has the file, only who knows the password can decrypt it and access the data.

I agree. Use es file explorer to encrypt. Select the option to encrypt file name and then the name of the file is just a string of numbers. Store that in a sub file of the android system, and everyone will just think its another system file.
Too much trouble but you could also store the encrypted file in the root directory, then unroot the phone.

It works against common folks.
Against any professional worth his salt ,these techniques are pretty much worthless. On the contrary you are helping the professional by filtering the file from the rest
. Any Professional is adept to work with 100K' s of files per request so obfuscation by numbers or type is pretty much pointless.
Encryption works fine. Except for a small part. Data is destroyed if key is destroyed and in such scenario the value of 50K file is worthless.
Any open system is easily hackable or accessible. To secure 50K worth data on a continuous basis ,you are better off using a prop. system whose standards are known to limited set of people. It filters out most common attacks .
Of course every system fails in front of a pipe wrench

Technically speaking, any selfrespecting professional would put the file on a storage medium that isn't connected to anything. A microSD folded inside a piece of aluminium foil is pretty much steal-proof.
Well, digitally speaking, anyway. No encryption or software is going to protect you from someone who hits you on the head with a blunt object and physically steals the storage device. And they don't work all that well against guns, either.

If you trip KNOX, the KNOX container is destroyed. So if you intend to use it, you can't trip it to 0x1.
Also, if you had any files inside the container when you tripped the fuse, they're wiped as well.
Try to really imagine that you're in that situation where you must use a phone. No dodging the question by using offline storage!
How would you actually feel about it?
Personally I would feel nervous about it because by law only devices with closed source modem code are allowed to connect to phone networks. In turn we have seen this as a backdoor that allows access to the phone. And we have then seen the likes of the NSA using this to access our phones.
So there is no phone out there that isn't back doored.
But... some have more protection than others and to all intents and purposes is someone at the NSA going to bother with $50k?
I don't know. This is half the point of this question. I am curious to see how other people react in the situation. Because there are a whole range of threats. The question becomes - what level should we protect to? Certainly that dodgy flashlight app. But also we have seen the FBI steal Bit coin funds during investigation so I would argue that this could be a realistic aim to think about. But then probably the FBI aren't going to be looking through your phone - who knows.
The point is to view things from others viewpoint to try to learn something.. In particular I was hoping to see points of views from different countries where spare is more common. For example in China we have a different kind of insecurity. Something that might have been discussed and discovered as a result of this hypotetical thought game might have been that a Chinese phone is or isn't easier to lock down than a USA one.
now you're going to look at my paranoid post instead of coming up with your own responses... which could just have been to stick it on a factory stock phone and not worry.
But that's also something I'm interested in. We all lead different lives. So I wonder if it's easier for others to deal with. The example.of an artist above is a good one. Really imagine you have that file, and it must be on a phone

Use phone in offline mode as storage, Or use a smartphone. adb perma locked , fastboot locked, Internet routed via private server with a whitelist to filter the network.
That will protect you against online intrusion,
A pickpocket can steal your phone and make a mockery of your security measures ...
Government officials can take you into custody and get the data from you.
Cyber warfare and security is over rated beyond feasible limits.
You are more likely to get mugged than hacked.

Security and Privacy concerns about "Uninstall" through icons

Greetings to all.
I'm not sure whether this should go here the Note 8 forum or into Android 7 Nougat forum (if there is such a forum here), but the Nougat I have on my Note 8 is allowing something I really cannot accept: the Uninstall function through long-pressing an app icon.
You see, I'm both a "security freak" and a "privacy freak", and I believe some of you may be able to feel what I'm saying. So I'm currently using an app locker (because I want to protect my phone in case someone snatches my Note 8 away from my hands while I'm using it so it'd surely still be unlocked during then), but this way of uninstalling apps directly bypasses the app locker and immediately uninstalls the target app. While my app locker could protect my data and info, it couldn't protect my phone from intentional attempts to wreak havoc.
So my questions are these 2:
1) Is there any way to completely disable uninstalling through all other ways except through Settings? (Because Settings can be app-locked.)
2) If the above isn't possible, is there any GOOD app locker that could lock the relevant system components to prevent any uninstalling attempt but at the same time requiring as little permissions as possible?
I wish there is a solution to this.
Thank all of you very much.
Just use a Nokia 3210?
I'm kidding. It's a phone... If you're that worried about securing it don't have anything that can compromise your fears. It's no different to a wallet or a watch. If someone wants... They'll get it.
I'm having a hard time understanding what the point of this is. If someone snatched the phone out of your hands before it was locked and walked off with it, is it going to matter if they uninstall your apps? Your phone is now stolen, so you probably won't be using it again. This is like asking if there's some way of stopping a car thief from changing the radio station presets on your stereo.
Maybe hire security guard? At least carry baseball bat or something. Of course there is Google cloud backup, Samsung cloud back up and side sync for back up to computer on top of secure folder on the phone, but you could fool everybody by buying fake Note 8 for $100, with nothing on it, while your real phone is in a bank safe.

Or maybe the OP could install a bunch of apps they don't want and remove all the shortcuts for apps they do use. Then, if the mugger uninstalls the apps on the homescreen, they're doing the OP a favour by uninstalling apps they don't want anyway.
Move important apps to secure folder....can use iris or finger print etc for permission

The secure folder app can't be uninstalled. Unless you're using a rooted Note 8 and it gets stolen then that's a different story but you suggest that you're keen on security so I'm assuming your phone is not rooted, right? Whatever files you're paranoid of others getting their hands on just put them in a secure folder using the secure folder app that's already on your Note 8. If they disable it or just remove the shortcut or hide it it's not going to be accessed without your password/pin/biometric so your stuff will be safe.
Just be aware of your surrounding while you're out and about. Exercise basic self awareness and security habits to help keep you safe and your belongings safe. Good luck.
I think I didn't explain clear enough.
Well of course I do know if someone...... practically ROBS my phone from me there absolutely isn't anything I could do. What I want to protect against here isn't robbers or bad people with intention to make my phone theirs, but people whom I know and are around me who don't really want to rob or steal but just want to cause trouble.
But from the above responses I can imagine there are no the kind of solutions I'm looking for, only other ways.

There are two ways to do this. An easy way and a hard way.
Hard Method
Go to Contacts
Delete all
Eject SIM card. Discard.
Get new SIM card with new number. Insert in phone.
Move somewhere else with less d*ckheads.
Easy Method
Grow a backbone.
I thank all of you for letting me know, in you all's own ways, there is no way to disable that "Uninstall". I also thank you for suggesting the use of Secure Folder. I'm already using it.
This thread is now done.
