Trackball boot - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

PLZ help im freaking out. i accidentally booted into the blue light mode, but when i pulled the battery and rebooted the backlight wouldnt work. i could see everything and even navigate my phone but only under a light. the backlight just wont turn on during boot and changing the setting doesnt help.
i dont get it the thing was working 10 minutes ago and now i cant use it what should i do? i love this phone but i cant afford a new one. is there a way to tell it to turn on during boot in the console?

ok new update the backlight works if i have the keyboard open. i know 100% its software and not the screen. something when wrong with the boot prosses or something.
i think the trackball boot (bluelight boot) must have options but wont display on the screen maybe. like a bios menu. this is very infuriating

Why don't you restore a recent backup?

i have even went as far as downgrading with the .nbh file. and re installing the bootloader (Just the original, didnt want a brick).

Definitely NOT a software problem.
This is a HARDWARE problem -- hence the fact that it works when the keyboard is open.
When you pulled the battery, you might have twisted/pulled something.
*** I would check the ribbon cable connecting the display to the main body!!!
Bluelight mode (where you end up by booting with the trackball pushed in), is just a serial console allowing interfacing with the radio firmware. Unless you actually had a serial cable connected and punched in some commands (which happen to be security locked, therefore wouldn't work for you anyways), bluelight mode wouldn't be able to do this.

if that were the case than wouldnt it flicker if i flex the screen/hinge ? ill try anything at this point cuz im outa warranty and have no money . im going to the store later trying to update to official 1.6 so i can convince them its software related and they may replace it for me.

oh forgot to mention that if i close it and open it the light stays off untill i hit end and unlock with menu again. im not to sure if that helps.

OK OK OK you are right. i just half closed it and the light stayed on untill it compleatly closed (so the screen flipped, i thought that is what triggered it) and then i got it to stay on completely closed and then the problem flipped to it wouldnt come on while open and now back to the way it was. so im going to go buy a T5 screw driver today and clean the contacts of the ribon cable and reinsert it (i have had experience with that just need to know what ribon. a pic would be nice)

lol ok didn't know that a lot of the devices I have taken apart have had 2 one for the desplay and one for the backlight. Getting a T5 screw driver in half an hour. Will post results later. Hopefully this works, therr area few more ppl with the same problem.

There are two wires going to the screen.. sounds like the "top" one is loose... The jtag photos will give you an idea (it's the two com ports next to the jtag test points)
These are usually taped down very well..
Also you need both a T5 and T6.. the "Security" (has black void sticker) screw is larger than the others.. and a small flat head screwdriver to unclip the cover..
If all else fails: replacement screens seem much cheaper than the phone on ebay.

ok got it apart 3 times and no luck its prolly the ribbon cable. im going to test that soon. i have a donor phone comming soon from a friend who dropped it in water, the ribbon cable should be fine to use. if that doesnt work im thinking maybe it is software. either way if i cant get it fixed by next month im spending $410 on a new mytouch 3G brand new from the store and getting insurance XP

ExtUSB port seems broken...

The ExtUSB port on my tytn2 seems to be broken, or something.
When I plug it into my computer it is no longer recognised, and doesn't even start to charge anymore.
Similarly, if I plug in any sort of charger, then the device will not do anything.
In an effort to charge it, I did the following. I removed the battery, thereby switching the device totally off, put the battery back in and then attached a mains charger. At this point I got a solid red LED at the top where the signal/charge LED is. I left it like this for 2 hours and came back to it. I switched it back on and it had fully charged the device - yet I still could not get it recognised by anything.
So what's going on here - is it broken or is this a software issue.
Ignore the reflash bit. How am I supposed to do that if I can't get USB working? Stupid question sorry. Still, I've tried a hard reset and still nothing, so I guess it's knackered huh
EDIT: Replacement is on it's way for tomorrow. Puts an end to that saga I suppose!
HTC's miniUSB port uses traces for contacts instead of pins, which I can't even begin to express how ridiculous that is. To make matters worse, the soft reset pinhole is located right next to it so one slight jab of the stylus, car keys in your pocket etc and you're screwed. You may have done it without even noticing.
Flashing roms is out of the question, but you can use PocketController to make it look as stock as possible through wifi. Another alternative is to take your device to a college/university micro-electronics lab where they will fix it for a small donation or free.

Best of luck, but it might not be the end of your saga. When it gets to servicing, if they notice something was jabbed in the miniSUB port, they could come at you with out of warranty fees.
I have insurance on my phone. It's covered for accidental damage anyway.
Yep. Figured that out the hard way. Accidently stuck my stylus into the USB rather than the reset hole.
If you're lucky, you may be able to "push" the traces on the bottom side of the connector back in place... only one side of my connector was bent. Then I gently connected and re-connected a mini-usb connector.

With Orange! Orange Care. Has done me proud a few times in the past, like when I crushed my SPV M2000 on the day I got it! Or when someone dropped my SE K700i in a pint of beer.
New phone is here and instantly I have noticed a couple of things:
1) Different type of battery, as already reported by some people. It's the Dynapack that doesn't quite fit properly.
2) Screen seems brighter and more colourful - again, as reported by some people already
3) The screen tilt is much stiffer (which is good cos the old one was really loose)
4) MicroSD cover feels of better material.
5) Whole thing feels so much quicker - but that's probably just because I've not loaded anything into it yet.

Is my USB port busted?

Tried connecting my kaiser to 2 different pc's and it won't get detected. The device will charge but activesync won't pick it up. Also its not listed in device manager! I tried disabling/renabling advanced network functionality as well has soft reset the device several times. I'm on the verge of hard reseting BUT when i put my device in bootloader mode it only says serial.. will not say USB as its supposed to
any help would be appreciated.. i'm on death v4 rom btw.
thanks in advance!

Can you get an activesync connection via Bluetooth? When you inspect the extUSB connection can you see anything which looks wrong (such as a wire sticking out/in more than the others? What happened preceding this problem?
If you hard reset the device I don't see the relevance of the bootloader. It'll just restore the original image from where it's tucked away in the devices ROM. If it was working fine straight after you installed the ROM thats on it now and doesn't work after a hard restore then that points towards a hardware failure. If you have to go down the path of restoring to a different (original) ROM for returning purposes, there are ways of doing this with a microSD card - although I've not tried. I think the wiki would help there.
bluetooth activesync is working, i did a hard reset and nothing. Flashed to romeos via microsd and now its acting all strange.
After it completed the flash from microsd, i soft reset the device and it rebooted backinto bootloader.. i removed the microsd and soft reset several times and it kept going to bootloader. I attempted to hard reset as well and same thing, would go to bootloader. Removed the battery for a couple minutes and still same thing. Plugged it into USB with it off and it turn on by itself and go straight to bootloader. Unplugged the USB cable, took out the battery and put it back in, then plug the USB cable back in and this time the orange light came on as if charging and it finally booted up. The above has happened to me previously on my hermes but that was when the battery was extremely low, my battery level is currently at 97%!
now its booted into the freshly flashed rom and still same thing... charging but not being recognized by the PC... i've checked the usb port on the device and everything looks fine.
I'm lost at what to do now....
This might be a stupid reply but I had the same problem. My cable was busted so you could try another cable.
I am in the same situation here
Tried it with 3 different PCs with 3 different cables.
It's charging, Active sync pickes it up and trying to connect but fails to connect.
The only think I can come up with, I used new charger in the car. May be it killed the port
Is there any way to find out for sure?
i tried 2 cables with 2 different pcs... its only charging it and the computer won't detect the device at all. Nothing under usb in device manager.. even in bootloader, it only says serial not usb. I've downgraded to a shipped AT&T rom and Radio through the storage card but i still need to downgrade the SPL before i attempt to get a warranty exchange. IS that possible to do with through microsd yet?
I'm having the same issue. The usb port charges the phone fine with the USB cable, but teh computer does not detect the device. I also tried the headphones and they work fine as well. Help!
Update: I just tried a different usb cable, and now the computer recognizes the device, but as an unknown device.!!!!!

Thanks for that suggestion but still no dice
The computer isn't detecting the device at all! Usually when a usb device is plugged in you can go to device manager and look under USB and see it there, but its not showing up. I've scanned for hardware changes several times and nothing.
I've now tried on 3 different computers (2 pc's and 1 mac) with 2 different USB-MiniUSB cables and nothing!!
i guess i'll just go to the at&t device support center tomorrow and hope they'll replace it on the spot and notice that i've changed the SPL...
can i ask for the people that are having this problem to do the following.
With your device unplugged from the PC open device manager. (Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware (3rd tab) -> Device manager) Then expand the last tab (Universal Serial Bus Controller) and plug in your device.. if it doesn't show up then click actions -> scan for hardware changes..
I just want to make sure if your computer is detecting your device or not..
just an update with my situation. i went into the att device service center today and told them my problem... the guy behind the counter had no clue what he was doing. he just looked at it like a monkey for minutes then swapped it out for a new one. no questions asked even though it was hard spl'd, cid unlocked, and sim unlocked.
but now this device's vibration is really weak and i lost my invsishield protection on the front (kept the battery cover and my ppctechs scren protector)
Busted? or just won't work
Hi all,
I have been coming to these forums for a little while and only posted a couple of times. I felt this was important. I was having the same problem. Tried the cables, resets, ROM changes the works. I have had my at&t tilt htc 8925 for 36 days when I reported the problem to them. But it actually started about 10 days before. At&t tech support was very rude and accusatory when it came to them "helping" me. I, like probably all owners of a phone like this treat it like gold. It is very important to me. So when I contacted tech support and was told it was probably abuse or I had "buyers remorse" (I don't want to return the phone I just want it fixed!?)
The best they can do and they do not budge on this is for me to return the phone for an exchange. BUT, and this is a BIG AT&T but, the phone they exchange it with is refurbished. Something someone has returned. I do not want a phone that has been returned. I want mine fixed. "This is my phone, there are many like it but this one is mine" Know what I mean? When I bought the phone the guarantee was "we'll just replace it with a new phone" and I like 1000's of others did not ask if that "new phone" was refurbished. It is. Now advocates will tell you as they did me, refurbished is actually BETTER than new. Huh? Then why aren't all phones sold refurbished ones? And if they are so great, take mine back, give me one of those "crappy" new phones and give mine to someone who wants a sweet refurb. I am outraged by the whole mess.
I have searched forums and complaint sites. The bad usb port problem is NOT an isolated incident. There are a lot of people with the same "it charges but won't sync" problem. This is a known problem they refuse to address. Their stand, send in for refurb.
Personally I would like to see a recall fix class action against at&t. It can be fixed but they just don't want too. I thought I would be relatively safe buying for a huge company. They spend millions on advertising to simply leave their customers twisting in the wind after 30 days. Very bad business.
That's the rant. So I decided that if the warranty was useless anyway I'd take a shot at it myself before sending out for repair myself. There is a place in California PPC Tech http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main.asp?area=home that will fix the usb for $79 and ship it back to you in a few days. They seem to be reputable and a lot of people are opting to fix this problem themselves.
How did I fix mine? by altering the mini usb end of the sync cable. I tried other cables and connectors but I think it has something to do with the contact points. The only way mine would work was if I plugged it in, wiggled it slowly and with a little bit of pressure at times, around until the screen brightens. That means it has made a connection, then don't move. Hold very still. It took both my hands. Wait for what seems like 2 mins and it would start to sync. Based on this. my repair (before I send it to California for repair, which I may end up doing anyway) is make sure the plug on the phone is straight and not damaged. If you can get the phone to sync this way you may be able to crimp the mini end of the usb very very slightly to make the connection you are manually doing by wiggling it around. It took a lot of small tweaking but it now syncs about 29 out of 30 times. That's about as good as it gets.
So good luck to us all. If you can't get it to work yourself send it out west to PPC Tech. In this economy the phone companies like at&t better start getting their customer service back on track before they have no customers to service, It has happened to the biggest before. Wake up AT&T! The days of the business model of massive turnover and new signups is coming to an end as people tighten their belts. Treating current and future users poorly is a sure fire way to put yourself out of business.
here is my gift to you all..

read this post and check EVERY SINGLE LINK in the first post...i had this issue and i ended bending my usb plug every which way until finally i broke the plastic seperator off and in turn smashing the second pin from the left on the top off (the one in charge of activesync) over and over until it broke...i didnt really care i could still flash by sd but then i smashed the + power pin and so i was on the phone with att for many many hours explaining to them that its a known issue to users but not to the company and they finally sent me a replacement..i should have just searched my butt off before trying to deal with a problem/fox it myself (yes i dissasembled it and soldered the pin back on and it broke off multiple times causing me to dissasemble it many many times and smashing it again and i ended up getting alcohol on the water damage void pad which i replaced) learn from me...if you ever have ANY problems that are significant..dont try fixing JUST GET A REPLACEMENT...who cares if its a refurb..if the refurb sucks then send it back until they send you a new kit...after 5 returns you get a new kit soo just keep sendin back them refurbs until your happy
oh and to make it easy on yourself because if you tell att you have a usb problem its NOT covered under warranty and will take you many many hours like me to convince them otherwise (which someone eventually will understand because certain people ARE familiar with this problem at ATT it just depends who you get and how many times youve been elevated in support)..what you need to do is IF YOU CAN return your spl back to stock (if you manage to get a long enough connection with activesync) but if not dont worry too much att doesnt really check spl just that you have the shipped rom on there so load the shipped rom (found on here) on your sd and flash back and just make up some excuse that it isnt working right and youl get a replacement or if you can get the spl revrted jus throw your device in bootloader by a failed flash (pull the usb out during flash) and say its stuck in the funny colored screen lol
jaysjob, i've been dealing with ppctechs for a long time (probably since '03-'04) they're very reputable and highly recommended. They actually got the contract to be the authorized repair center for I-Mate about a year ago.
But why would you pay $79 for something where u can get a complete replacement? Yah it might be a refurb but my device that i turned in was all scratched up from drops.. the images on the start, ie, and messaging buttons by the d-pad had scratched off.. and now the device i got looks brand new (i actually think it is a new one but i never asked if it was a refurb or not)
pazookie, what your saying is true.. always take advantage of the warranty if you have it. If you dont and you want to repair it yourself, know what your doing! I'm very handy and have done many lcd replacements and other various repairs on cellphones (nokias, HTCs, sony ericsson, samsung, motorola, u name it!)
My little brother has the n82 and he bought the black case, I told him to wait for me and i'd help him do it but he got impatient and he thought it was gonna be a simple swap. He ended up breaking his LCD doing it which set him back $80!
anyways i'm happy now with a new device but i'm gonna go back tomorrow and get it replaced again because the vibrate is extremely weak!

Hi fone
Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I agree with you. If the phone has something else that is messed up like you were saying a scratched screen or buttons. It's just that I am as careful as I can be to keep the phone in nice condition just to send it back for maybe one that someone didn't take the same care of.
Mine works good now. I think it has something to do with when I crimped the cable end. It make a tighter fit. I think that may be the key to mine and others problems. For sure it is becoming more and more clear that there is a design flaw whether att wants to acknowledge it or not.
Thanks for your input about PPC too. If I do end up having to fix it that's probably the way I'll go if that is still the only thing wrong. Otherwise it's in for the warranty as you suggested. I KNOW I'm not that smart.
Im having this same issue and it is definately not a cable problem.

if u think its a hardware problem then take it to a service center. The guys there just follow step by step guides on how to diagnose phone issues. For me he saw a crack in the usb jack on my device and just replaced it. If you send it in to HTC i think theres a higher risk of them figuring outu the device is hard spl'd and wont honor your warranty.

taylor, I'm not saying it is a cable problem. I am saying it is a hardware port problem. I "fixed" mine, probably temporarily, by crimping my usb cord so that it holds more firmly in the port. I did say if you have the same problem and you use the same test I did ie: move it slightly, Gently, not like others I have heard stories of where they ram it from side to side until it snaps off, that you might be able to do what I did. I thought others with the same problem might be able to use this workaround until at&t figures out it is not an isolated incident with thousands of people having the same problem thats all. Hope this helps.
jj
I had a similar problem. Phone would charge fine, but windows didnt even recognise anything was plugged in. Interestingly the bootloader changed to USB when the cable was connected, and Serial when unplugged.
As it turns out (thanks Flying Kiwi for suggesting the obvious I had overlooked) the middle top pin was recessed too much into the plastic guide, so I stabbed it a bit with a scapel and all is well.
So it seems that the Serial/USB section of the bootloader cant even be trusted.

Replacing a Part for the G1

I bought this G1 with a cracked screen and I decided to replace the screen, however when I removed a certain part in the phone I managed to rip a ribbon cable. I searched for a replacement part and found out that it will cost about $185 to replace it. Now I am about to buy this other G1 for $50 that had water damage that I will be using for parts. But before I buy it, is there a way I can see whats wrong with it using adb? I'm interested in whether the part that I need is in working condition.
the phones condition is:
-the screen does not show anything but a backlight
-leds work
-rebooting using three buttons work
-lcd is probably screwed up because when i hit the power button i see part of the home background and then it fades away.
-no g1 screen logo while rebooting
-normally vibrates once while rebooting
-android os boots up
-"adb kill-server adb devices" doesn't list me any devices when i hook it up to usb. maybe debugging is turned off.
here is a link to the part i am about to remove

you ARE SO FUNNY!!!
Why? can I laugh too?
I don't see you turning a profit considering u can buy one for $200 on craigslist easy
its funny cuz its like you trying to buy a coumputer without a mother board. this is the main thing in the g1 it would be cheaper to buy the phone brand new
i have two, one of them needs this part and the other one has the part i need. and plus im fixing it for my brother.
G1 #1
-already Bought for $74
-needs pcb board
G1 #2
-$50 as is
-has pcb board
-has water damage
anyhow I managed to get into recovery and did a wipe logged in but once the screen turns off i cant turn it on anymore. would you say it is safe to exchange these parts?
Wrong Forum, goodness
how is it wrong..I'm not asking anybody to take it apart and do it for me. if it was in the wrong place would it be because I'm not developing something for someone to use. is there a section for modding, taking apart the g1 and internals. if i could develop something i would. i guess there's no help in posting useless remarks because that doesn't contribute to nothing. If this so happens to be in the wrong forum well then this is my first mod now isn't it? and since you went of of your way to tell me its the wrong place why don't you be helpful to lead your fellow xda forum member. ok.
accessory forum This seems to strictly be about discussing the SOFTWARE for the Dream. Accessory forum covers mods and replacements (to my knowledge)

I'd say expensive, as you have no idea the extent of the water damage. If the phone was on while dropped into the water, the mainboard is likely dead. Buying it would be a waste.
Also, this forum is for software development. Moving this thread. Thanks!
hey thanks for moving my thread. as i reread my post it seems more of a question than a developmental thread.
further testing
i booted up
ran through all of the radios wifi, 2g, 3g, orientation sensor, made a call and they all seem to work fine. the one problem with this phone is that if i turn off the screen it won't turn back on.i think that maybe the pcb board might be salvageable. would that be worth doing?
What cable was it that you ripped? What was it connecting? And is it possible for you to take pictures?
my digi cam isnt working but this will do. its like a 1/8" rip on the side of the ribbon i was thinking about repairing but i cant because the ribbon is soldered to the board. i figure that i should try swapping it out, what could possibly go wrong? im assuming that the lcd has lost the ability to regain power after turning off from the water. and maybe...possibly the main pcb has dried up and not been damaged considering most things work fine. thanks for sticking around.
I'm not liking your chances of getting this working, but fwiw here's the service manual:

Thanks I already have that manual printed out. Took it all apart like4 or 5 times. its pretty easy to do. I'll be starting operation on it tonight.

[Q] My xperia x1, durbility is poor after just one year of use...

So its been about a year and half since I received this phone for my birthday, and from this moment on, I am 90% sure that these companies design these phones to fall apart after a while so you buy a new one.
Please to not be intimidated by the length of the problems, I really doent want to waste a $600 nice phone. Please help.....
List of problems:
So on one random day, while I was using my phone with EnergyROM sense 6.1 (Not even 6.5 (Windows 6.5.5)) the phone stopped rotating when I flipped the keyboard, as in the screen will not rotate when I try to use the keyboard. The touch screen also becomes uncalibrated, and even when I recalibrate it, it still acts very funky (have to click lower than button or higher, depending on its mood). I did absolutely nothing different with my phone that day, but I did not call my phone dead right away, so I decided to update the ROM with the latest sense 6.5 ROM to see if the OS is corrupt or over-cached. This did not fix the problem.
Also, another very weird thing is the phone's screen will illuminate (I guess backlight), but no picture will show when turned on after sleep mode, and I have to click the top button again to sleep and awake it to get a picture. When flipped, the screen doesn't even fully illuminate, and literally dies down to a black screen (half of the pixels are bright, and then it just fails).
Any help would be very appreciated. What I am thinking of is wiping the phone 100%, and not even leaving a rom on it. I heard there is a command that deletes the junk off your phone from a previous ROM to your updated ROM is clutter free. Any other suggestions?
Edit: I hard reset my phone, and nothing is fixed; I still cannot flip screen into landscape mode.
The "command" you are talking about is called "task 29", look for it in the ROM section.
It sounds like hardware problems, i've had mine for about 1 year and a half as well and no problems besides a couple of scratches.
The flex cable connecting LCD and board might be out of order.... I had the same issue.

Yeah I heard about that problem. I will first task 29 it, but are there any guides to take apart and fix the flex cable, or even just unplugging it and plugging it back in?
Also, what did you do with your broken phone? Did you buy a new one or get it fixed?
Thanks for the feed back both of you.
my X1 also aged same as yours and it still runs flawlessly now. so it might depends on how you used and keep it
as for the "wiping off the phone" its called task 29, and is encouraged to do before you flash a new ROM, have you did it before flashing energyROM?

No, but I just did now, but it seems to be a hardware problem because nothing seems to be working properly still. This is some serious BS because I am very over protected with this phone, just to prevent stuff like this to happen. I have never dropped it ONCE, and it seemed to just wear out by itself. The lenses covering the camera is cracked also, and the screen is all screwed up, and I didnt do absolutely nothing abusive to it, I am 110% sure of this.
Any suggestions on how to fix hardware/ ribbon connected to the screen problem?
Order a new cable and replace it.
If you search on Youtube for the video on how to disassemble x1 there is a complete guide that shows you. Its pretty easy and all you need to do is, take the flex cable out and carefully plug it back in. Then carefully put your X1 back together and hopefully you issue will be fixed. If it still persist, then try and get the flex cable changed.

[Q] Captivate Battery Prongs Bricked

I have rooted my Captivate with Cognition 2.1 and decided to try a new rom. Cognition 2.2. In the middle of the process the update would not complete and after an hour of waiting I pulled the usb cable. Now it does not power at all or make a connection with the laptop. I have tried all sorts of three button and two button methods along with building the homemade jig but it still does not go.
On the three battery prongs the one on the left is facing up. Would this keep the phone from charging or starting up. There is wear marks on the battery on that spot so I would assume it is making connection. From what I read these phones do come back to life but it is a charging issue then it will not happen. Also was thinking that the captivate will power on without a battery through the USB or power cable.
Have talked to ATT and they will not do a warranty on the phone because of the bent prong (does not matter if it has nothing to do with whats wrong with the phone) it has physical damage.
well that just sucks don't it? lols
i know this is probably a pretty obvious question but did you try to bend the prong back so it matches the other ones?
i have tried to bend it back but it just seems to bounce back to where it was. was thinking about pulling the whole back off the phone but I have never taken a captivate apart so not quite sure what it entails.

ive never taken one apart either but i would imagine that you would need a small screw driver and wouldnt have to take more than the back cover off.
here is a pictoral teardown of the phone

OK I guess the captivate is coming apart. I supposed this would call for a u-tube video

Can you take a picture of it with another camera so someone else could tell you if it appears as it should?

Not hard to take apart....just pry up slightly in center of battery lock slide to expose two bottom screws and a fingernail to pry case apart...no scratches that way. The tabs holding it together are breakable but working around the entire device gradually works well.

They might not do a warranty exchange, but you aren't killed. I don't see why you think taking the phone apart is going to make any difference, as the prong is damaged on the outside of the phone.
As for if thats the cause of the brick, I doubt it. Unless you bent the prong AFTER you pulled the USB cable, i don't think it's the problem. It wouldn't work for awhile and then decide not to just because you botched a flash.
When you bend them back into place, does it look normal before it pops back? And I work at AT&T, I deal with that crap every day. Word to the wise; don't mention it, they don't bother looking.
Late Edit: Has your prong been bent before, and is the wear mark on the batteries connector in the same spots as the other ones? With the way yours is positioned, it might not be making a full connection.
I do not think the battery prong is my problem either. The girl at the store mentioned it to the so called Android specialist and she said that was physical damage and because of that ATT would charge me $454 for a new phone even if it had nothing to do with why the phone will not turn on. I would have to assume that I am now black flagged on my account.
I am going to hold off on taking the phone apart and see about trying some other suggestions first. Of course not sure what those suggestions are at this point.
This is not Development related.

That same thing happened to me, it still worked fine for me, but I ended up bricking it a bit later. I used insurance and got a new phone, bricked it, sent both in to samsung, the fixed the prongs on the broken one, (yeah I didn't send back the phone to AT&T's insurance, **** em) and reflashed both of them to stock firmware, and got them both back, in working condition. But always make sure you have Button combos before flashing. In the Wiki there's a link to DesignGear's fix you can flash with Clockwork.
I think I would just carefully push the bad pin down as you insert the battery. Don't take the battery out unless you have to.

I don't understand the need to pull the phone apart. As a temp fix, u could try soldering a small copper wire piece to the battery terminal, either on the battery or on the phone.
If you don't want to get into the mess of soldering, place the battery and push the single strand wire into it so the contact is made. Or else u could put the wire on the bottom and bend it little so it stands up touching the connector, and place the battery on top of it.
May want to edit those pics and black out the IMEI and other info.
Problem with just doing the temp fix in order to get your phone back into download mode - one of the last steps is jamming the battery back in with the USB cable plugged in while holding down both VOLUME buttons.
But - um you don't even see the grey battery charging icon?
There are other ways to get into download mode. He could apply the temp fix, open odin, hold both volume buttons, then plug the usb cable in. That's what I do.
