Metamorph - Droid Eris Themes and Apps

I see other phones use this, do we? It seems simpler than flashing all the time.

Individual Phone power.

I honestly couldn't think of a good title, and I was half and half about posting this in the themes/wallpaper section or developement.
But ever since we started partitioning our sd cards I always felt like that was something we should be able to do through our phones, mainly because I lacked resources to download and run everything.
And now I'm thinking it would be very nice if we had a feature to customize our phones without using our PC's or MAC's! I could go into detail about what to include but I'm sure we all know what we want to see done.
And besides, the HTC Sapphire has that FreshFace app that looks ok, but lets out due that app already and build something along these lines of deeper, better, more personal customization.
No offense to any theme makers I appreciate all your work.
This should be in the apps section, definitely not development.
How about Open Home or aHome?
Or better yet, you can create your own theme and it would be completely customized

Lol I would if I was educated enough in the manner, I'd pretty much make whatever anyone wanted because I think its pretty interesting. Just given my enviorment of a family p.c. and a small notebook, I doubt I'll have the right time to learn and all that buddy.
android being open source "is" what you speak of in terms of customization already.. problem is that it "is" customization only by the ones who speak the language of Java.
Themes or whatnot can be done with resigning new images into a update.zip without too much learning curve if you know how to do graphics.
The ones without the talent.. like hyenas.. just take what they can get and get by on xda lurking.
I started closest to the last statement and am now currently at the second where I can comfortably change graphics and use adb and signing apk as I please. This lets me pretty much change anything minus the rom and os itself that requires coding. I just got my second bill from t-mo.
Just do it.

Whats the difference betweer flashrec (1-click-root) and the old method of rooting

I Wanna know what are the advantages ,pros and cons about the 1-click-rooting (flashrec-1.1.2-20090909) system and the old way of rooting ?
im confuse which one is better in your point of view and why?
In my opinion, the one-click method is really easy to do. The old method is very time consuming, but if you follow it exactly to the t then I would go with the old method for rooting, because you get to learn a lot of things about the phone and how the operating system works. It just depends on the person I guess. If you are comfortable with the old method you can do it, or if you think you can handle the old method go for it.
Basically...
Pros of 1 click: saves time, noob friendly, and good if your just trying to get a rooted phone and not really take the g1 as something you want to look more into.
Cons: none
Pros of old: you learn a lot more about the phone and roms and stuff
Cons: takes kinda long, complex parts
AND id just go with 1 click if your not on a data plan!
Never used the 1 click method so can't comment on that one. As far as the old method, you will become far more familiar with the whole flashing process and the updating of roms and themes will be much easier. I didn't really think it took all that long. Download all of your files and read, read, and reread the directions. Watch youtube videos, whatever you need to do to get it right.
I Have done both
I've done it both way i really love the old way of rooting the the g1 but it is a lil complicated i didn't really know the pros and the cons about it but as i can see its the same heh thx for everything

please help a newbie

just purchased a sprint htc hero im wondering what are the advantages or disadvantages on changing the roms and can someone help me in chosing and installing a new rom
Themes. Tethering. Improve battery life and signal. Improve overall speed. New 2.1 features. And VARIETY! Just to name a few...
The advantages are many...it's fun to see what other people come up with, exciting to find new features, cool to check out many different awesome themes....
Disavantages....on occasion you have to wipe going from one rom to the next (but that can be fun too)
.....what ROM to choose, that is going to be up to you and what you like in a ROM....from all the ones you test out on your HERO!!!!
Do some reading and ROM searches my friend, you'll be surprised at all the good stuff you find
And all the info you'll need is at the top of the forum.
Here -http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618874
And here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618867
No one can help you chose a rom, it's a personal choice and frankly there are so many to chose from you'll get at least 5 different answers from 10 people.
The advantages are you will get much better performance out of your device and unlock potential that the average person would never know exists. Sprint bogs the thing down with so much crap you would be AMAZED at how much better it will operate when it's all cleaned up Also you can do things like wifi tether (true) and enable the built in light saber (false)
The disadvantage is learning about this stuff and doing it for yourself is so fascinating and fun if you're not careful it will quickly take over every aspect of your life (true)
There are plenty of guides from getting started for total noobs to things like compiling kernel from source code. Check out the guides wiki at the top of the forum, it' one of the stickies. First thing you will do is "root" and backup your phone, then you're pretty much good to do whatever you want and as long as you don't flash a GSM rom on your CDMA hero anything you do after you make a nandroid backup is reversible.
Welcome to xda, have fun!
*edit- LOL, there's a few of us up late tonight I see!
I finally decided to use custom ROM because I got sick of waiting for Sprint to release 2.1 update. There is all sorts of software out now that just runs on 2.1, Google Navigate was the big one for me.
Since I upgraded, there has been other things, speed, the ability to install a virtually unlimited set of apps, live wallpapers, swype keyboard, these are the big things i Like. Edit: Oh and wifi tethering is huge!!
There are some problems right now, you cant have everything at once. and it will take some time playing around to get what works best for you.
One other thing to consider is that when Sprint rolls out the 2.1 update over the air, you may lose the ability to root your phone. You can root now, and when the update comes out, someone here will make a rom from it and that way you will guarantee the ability to have root and still have latest stock sprint/htc software.

This is a good step by step guide I used to root my phone. Also A good rom with everything working is fresh 2.0d without overclock but with the updates. You'll get live wallpapers wait just read what he wrote

Agreed, there are several methods to rooting but you cant go wrong doing it the old fashioned way. You get some great exposure to the inside of your phone and TTG wrote a very good guide. Just follow the steps.
Also in that guide he has a link to the 1.5.2 recovery image, thats a little outdated, you want RA's 1.6.2 found HERE, scroll about 2/3 down the page and choose one of the 4, doesn't matter which, the only difference in them is cosmetic.

Just because you haven't found it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Ask me some time about my impromptu circumcision and why I always disable the menu-menu-to-unlock feature.

Damn, light saber app killed the Aardvark huh? I never thought anyone would get hurt when I wrote that app....sorry.

No 'Summerboard'-esque App?

I've got a question that's perturbed me since my first Android phone: how come no one has capitalized on an app similar to the iPhone's Summerboard?
i'd think it'd be relatively easy, as i assume (with no previous knowledge, mind you) that the iPhone and Android use a similar system for app coding, and with that there would already be the framework for the work needing to be done.
and if the coder was a greedy bastard, (not my opinion) he would/could make a killing from the sales of it. by only charging .99 on the market or through PayPal or whatever, if all these themers purchased it (s)he'd be making some nice guap.
i'd be interested in doing the UI if some advantageous super-coder out there wanted to head up the project. i think it'd do a lot of good.
and don't get what i'm trying to throw out confused with all the half-hearted attempts at making some graphic-altering application; i'm talking about something that relies on theme files, which rely on themers, which rely on artists.
i'd hope, too, that if successful it'd bring over some of the wonderful guys from macthemes.net. they're behind most of the icons that people (myself included) have ripped for use on our Android phones, actually.
wow! sorry, brothers.
no, i'm with you. theres a new app called metamorph that is getting there but there is still a ways to go until you can theme iphone style. hopefully we'll get there
Yeah, I'm completely confused as to how this is any different from Stericson's apps. MetaMorph's been out for how many months now, and NinjaMorph has been out for at least a month or so. Both work extremely well for theming any or all parts of android framework.
Also, Anderweb's launcher is making amazing progress with customizable icon and widget sizes and effects, among other things.
also the difficulty with doing this for android are the .9pngs. these images cant just be replaced with an app and have to be done through a tedious process.
There is also the problem with Android and iPhone apps being setup differently. With the iPhone, you install an app (.ipa) and it has an open folder with every image easily swappable. With Android, each thing is kept in its original packaging (.apk), and swapping things out would require you to resign it with the devs original signature OR moving it to the /system partition (As apps here do not need to be signed). The problem with this is 1. (Almost) No dev is going to continually resign their app for each time they are asked to when they will have to do it again as soon as they update the app and 2. The /system partition does not have an unlimited amount of space, it's POSSIBLE (Don't take my word for it) that we should be able to symlink it to the /sd-ext partition, but this runs the risk of slowing down the phone.
This is just my ignorant view on this so any piece of information may be incorrect.

Plus that app would need root access which normal apps don't have, then most people use non-rooted devices. Don't forget the diff res of phones, some people will be angry when they cant get it to work. You should see some of the dumb comments left on the market.

Best and Easiest Root/Unroot

I'm curious. I have a Motorola Xoom that is rooted using ADB. My Thunderbolt, which is now retired, was rooted with Revolutionary. I got my Bionic on Thursday, and I'm nearly ready to root it.
So I've been reading the forums, and the different root methods. I still have a few questions, like how come the different system versions are such a huge issue. They were an issue on the Thunderbolt to a point, but only like with MR1 and MR2.
What's the best and easiest root method that has an equally easy unroot. Directions are good. This'll be the fourth device rooted by me, so I'm getting very comfortable with it, but this is a new device. Plus, I always want to make sure I know my back door route extremely well, before walking in the front door.
Last, and this one I haven't done a lot of research on yet. How much has been done towards rom's and kernels. I know in some of the older posts, people were talking about the locked bootloader. Surely that's been gotten around?
Thanks. Ohh, and yes I did search. Found plenty of similar threads. All in other phone models.
The Bionic is my first smartphone and so I am very new to rooting. I tried a couple of rooting options (PetesMotorolaRootTools_v1.07 and R3l3AS3DRoot, which is specific to the Bionic). Both worked, but I had issues with v1.06 of Pete's and so I tried the R3Root and it worked. I like how it has an option to factory restore the phone, since I did screw up with something and I had to restore, due to my inexperience. It's also a much quicker process, doesn't need to reboot a bunch of times. You can find them both here on XDA. I can give you direct links once I find them.
Thanks. I'll look for them.
Was wondering if anyone could explain the different version, like the .901, I think it is.
I plan on rooting tomorrow or Tuesday. Is there any particular ROM or radio that'll help with the data drop issues, or are those Verizon issues in general on 4G. Never had a problem on my Thunderbolt. My wife has started having data drop issues on her's, and the Bionic has them several times a day. Read somewhere that it might be tied in with battery management, which makes sense.
Moderator, you can lock this. Nobody replied, and I'm now rooted.
For anyone who happens across this thread, I highly recommend this method. Super simple and the guide is easy to follow.
