N1 xda future - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
i am pending between Desire and the N1 my doubts are:
1- How about the extra ram benefits of the Desire RAM: 576 MB versus the 512 MB RAM of the Nexus?
2- i know that HTC have a very strong XDA community so i am concerned that in the future XDA Roms and hacks for N1 are more faster droped then the HTC desire because although it is known that both use the same hardware but the Desire have more RAM, radio and perhaps a a better camera ("offering a solid 30 frames per second at D1 quality. The Nexus One only has D1 recording at a minimum of 20 frames per second") and perhaps other stuff so in the future let´s say when Android 2.3 gets out one can´t put it on N1 although there is a cooked rom for Desire because there are slight hardware differences

1. Yes, the desire has more ram, some will be required for Sense UI to run well, some more might be used for running programs
2. i think developers will naturally be attracted to the nexus one over the desire because the nexus one is a developer phone, it is easily hackable, and very flexible. the sense UI is proprietary which adds an extra problems when trying to fiddle with it.

Thanks for the fast response liam.lah
I mean if the the extra ram of the Desire RAM: 576 MB versus the 512 MB RAM of the Nexus will make a significant difference?

Have you considered the fact that n1 will get instant updates when google releases a new version of android? htc will make you wait a bit before they release their updated senseui+rom. i think that would also annoy devs.
the extra ram will benefit the sense ui interface, by making it smoother, but n1 doesnt have sense ui so that 64mb ram isnt making a difference to n1's speed.
edit: the desire also looks alil uglier - in my opinion (the buttons at the bottom ruin the sleek look)

I completely agree

Don't forget that sometimes HTC seems to artificially hold back updates to help sales of new models.
Look at the Hero/Legend. Same damn phone pretty much, but HTC isn't pushing an update to 2.1 to the Hero so it doesn't cannibalize sales of the Legend, which is sitting at 2.1 with identical guts inside. Totally artificial roadblock.
Who knows if that will happen with the Desire and some future HTC model.
Also..The desire does not have North American 3G, so that would be a dealbreaker for me personally.

the RAM makes no difference in my opinion. its virtually identical.

Thanks all
i already order my Nexus One

I already seen an review where the Desire was a little slower compared to the N1 because because of the sense ui. The reviewer said that the Sense ui in the HD mini was more fluid and the mini has an 600 mghz Qualcomm CPU/GPU. I can´t remember if it´s the first time that HTC puts its ui in an Android phone i know that they do that in Winmo phones since the Kayser so maybe it´s more optimized for this OS. But the reviewer didn´t tell also who many colors each cphone was using.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't HTC often include the modems RAM in its total RAM. So the ram is actually the same. It makes sense. Why would HTC add 64 mb extra RAM it's just kind of weird, they would have to add a whole new chip for just 64 mb.

One thing to be aware of regarding the GN1 is that it actually ***IS*** an HTC phone, which means that the updates are STILL in the hands of HTC. Direct from the horse's mouth, google again screwed up and failed to insist that HTC hand over the full source code and specifications.
Just like HTC DREAM support was dropped prematurely, GN1 will suffer the exact same fate.

It does seem odd, especially since the 512MB RAM and FLASH of the N1 are both in a single chip, I don't know if that's true for the Desire too?
I was thinking that perhaps the additional 64MB was "bundled" in some other chip on the phone(s), but only enabled on the Desire?

Next to the Nexus One, the Desire looks like it was designed by those Volvo engineers canned in the 80's for making their cars so ugly!
Just kidding, the Desire is still a nice looking piece of harware, but I like the lines of the Nexis One better.
And yes, the N1 is a Dev phone, dirt simple to modify and updates will be available for it faster. Rooting the Desire so far is a lot more involved. (Paul @Modaco.com) just completed the task today for SOME of them.
The upside for Desire development is that it's likely to sell 25 times better than the N1, meaning that there are going to be plenty of people (including Paul) tinkering with it.
I don't think you can go wrong with either one, but my personal preference is still the N1 over anything currently available. In time, I am sure that will change.

Not the first for SenseUI in Android - only the first time in Eclair.

[Q] Buy Milestone or wait for Milestone 2?

Hello, I am about to buy an android phone, after patiently waiting a half year (because I've been scammed when I attempted to buy an iPhone)
So, I really love phones with a qwerty keyboard and I live in Europe.
The only phone I like right now is the Milestone, but motorola is really being a pain in the ... against us european costumers, but at least they promised us the froyo update at last. (probably because they had to, it said "Flash 10.1 compatible" on the box.)
So my question is, what is your advice for me? If I wait for the MS2 I will have 2.2 for sure, but I'll have to wait for the device to get rooted..
Right now I can buy the Milestone at a 2 year 15€/month contract. It's retail price is € 387,-
Does anyone have any idea at all about the milestone 2 pricing?
I would like to play some games on the phone like N.O.V.A. and Asphalt 5 by gameloft. But from what I've seen, the multi-touch is reaaaly messed up. Is this correct?
Greetings, Mike vHL
For myself i decided to wait Milestone 2. Buy new phone, when there is a upgrade of him its not reasonable.
Sorry for my bad english =).
Thanks, but after watching a movie, I found out that the only thing that was changed that was really of impact to me was the processor, RAM and keyboard layout.
The processor doesn't make that much of a deal to me, since the games are still quite responsive. The keyboard layout isn't that much of a deal to me either. The ram would be nice, sure, but I don't care, since I've waited too long and really want an android phone, right now xD
About the multitouching thingy, the MS2 uses the same screen, so that isn't a deal-breaker either. I'm sorry for bothering the community with my stupid question.
Greetings, Mike vHL

I think that the new version of milestone its a work on the bugs.
I like new proc, keyboard and ram. That why i decide to whait for the new phone.
if there were no major hardware flaws, then its not really work on bugs rather than a work on buyers pocket with a 2 on the end
I myself plan to get milestone 1 even if 2 comes out, for the following reasoning
- milestone 1 prices should drop radically
- anything they have to offer on mile2 would be an overkill for me, cause I dont even plan playing games
- design of mile1 blew me off with metal finish
- last but not least - I used all androids from 1.6version till froyo on my kaiser and tbh if they release 2.2 for mile1 with all features working well, I dont need anything else xD
Get a Milestone 1. It may sound crazy, but i "upgraded" to a Milestone from a Nexus one. Sure, the Nexus had a snapdragon, 512RAM and proper froyo roms, but the Milestone has an ARM Cortex-8 wich can go beyond 1.2Ghz with absolute reliability while the Nexus was already unstable at 1.1Ghz, it has a PowerVR GPU wich beats the crap out of the snapdragon gpu even at the default 550Mhz. I don't know who told you about the buggy multitouch, but i can tell you that the Milestone has accurate multitouch compared to the Nexus that has a serious problem that snaps axis when they get close and mess everything arround. Seriously the milestone performance is almost unbeliebable and besides that, it's got a qwerty keyboard, i have seen better keyboards (HTC Universal) but at least we have one. Once we get a proper froyo release on the Milestone, you will forget about every other single phone, but for now you can use the latest MotoFrenzy if you dont care about the camera issue, or stick arround with the good old 2.1 releases.
Edit: Ah, sorry i forgot to mention the sound quality and built-in speakers. The Milestone has the best sound quality out of all the Android phones i have tried so far. (HTC Dream, Hero, Nexus One, Xperia X10 and Desire).
Milestone2 would still have Cortex A8 ARM cpu not qualcomm snapdragon as far as I know. PowerVR should still be in the game too. the extra RAM is going to make some difference especially when more apps are running. Phone will definitely feel snappier even compared to 1.1GHz overclocked MS1 (like mine ). Not to talk its going to run Froyo which is supposed to make things even smoother.
If you want to save money - get original Milestone, if you are ok spending a bit more and willing to wait - wait for the Milestone 2. I would wait for MS2 if I were you.
I am told the updated cpu in the Droid 2 and Milestone 2 is smaller, faster, yet more battery efficient. I know the D2 gets like 9 hours of talk time vs 7 for the original Droid and that is CDMA, where it uses a bit more battery than GSM. Something to think about.
Snapdragon, A4, Samsung's 1GHz, and the Ti OMAP processors in the Droids are all based off ARM's Cortex A-8.
Newer phones are upgrades over the Milestone in regards to pure CPU speed and RAM, but all of them, except for the Milestone 2/Droid 2 with the same LCD, have inferior screens.
I consider it an "upgrade" to move from the Galaxy S to the Milestone because the latter has a much better and more usable screen, which is more important to me than anything else, but the Galaxy S does have incredible touch accuracy.
If you have the funds, then the Milestone 2 is definitely a worthy upgrade. Personally, I wouldn't change my Milestone to anything else other than the Milestone 2, an international Droid X (due to its improved CPU, RAM, and camera), and the iPhone 4 --all of which are far more expensive.
Droid X has the same amount of ram, and same exact cpu as the D2. The camera is an upgrade but it isn't that big of an upgrade from what I have read.
The Milestone2 is definitely just another Milestone but with improvements.
Both devices have the same connectivities, same screens, same features and same physical hardware. The differences are
The biggest one is:
512MB RAM vs 256MB. The new processor will run faster and can multitask much better.
Next important thing is the camera difference, its the same 5MP shooter but it now does 720p video.
After that the next important thing is the physical hardware/keyboard: personally the Milestone does have a good qwerty so I'm not sure if this is an advantage or just a tie.
The last upgrade is the CPU: 1GHz vs 550MHz stock (O'C to 1.2GHz to surpass in performance).
Honestly, you can wait ~1month from now you can get the MIUI ROM (in development by dexter and the official miui team - better than MotoBlur)
with Froyo (so it will be tie),
800MHz (this is to increase battery life while giving good performance - better than Milestone2).
Or wait ~1month to get the Milestone2 and the only advantages it really would have is the 720p video and the extra performance and multitasking (from extra RAM). If you want the GameGripper for the Droid2/Milestone2 you will also need to wait for it.
The Milestone2 will get the locked bootloader so development on it will be slow or non-exsistant. If however it gets rooted and its ROM extracted, I'm guessing the camera stack will easily be ported to the original Droid/Milestone for 720p. The only thing is the Droid/Milestone would need to be overclocked (800MHz +) to be able to capture 720p video and that may not even be enough, maybe the RAM will be the limiting factor.
Well there's the information, now go make up your mind
Actually the biggest difference is the CPU, which is faster and give it longer battery life.
But the M1 can be overclocked to match the M2 (or be close), but the 256Mb RAM limitation cannot be improved. I personally have few problems with 256 megs, but with 512, you pretty much never need to close any apps.
That maybe so, but the M2 cpu while smaller is more efficient, and faster(plus the better gpu that comes with newer chipset).

Why is HTC Desire faster than O2X?

Hi guys,
My girlfriend has a 1 year old HTC Desire and its really pi**ing me off that it is faster than my brand new dual core O2X...
Her Desire is stock rom.... full of crap because she never deletes apps yet its still noticeably smooth and faster than my phone which regularly slows down / hangs...
How can 2 processors be faster than one? Is the LG software really that bad that they can make something that should be twice as fast, actually 5 times slower....
BTW I have had my O2X as stock and as MCR FR12... no difference, they are both SLLLOOOOWWWW (not knocking Paul or MCR one bit though, appreciate all the work he does...)
Simple answer? Yes
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
My guess would be LG fail at software, I suspect it will be totally different with CM.
I have a Desire and can confirm that.

What exactly is faster? Sense vs. LG Home?
Internet browsing?
Games?
Sense on the desire series is lightning fast and smooth, HTC has been working a long time to tune it.
Correct me if I'm wrong but i read some parts of android are more optimized for the qualcomm processors (vs. any other cpu).
LG made some adjustments in the caching of apps to speed up boot times (and making the rest of the experience slower) , but paul's rom 'fixed' this.
I did a side by side comparison between the desire HD and the o2x and for now the dhd feels a lot more mature; untill you start up a game and I hope newer roms (actually read cyanogenmod here; in time don't think the first few nightlies will be much difference) can make this device as fast as it should be.
Installing another launcher like launcherpro or adw will help a lot, but will not magically fix lg's software flaws. Custom rom is the way to go

Wait for the gingerbread update which should come within the next month - and lets hope LG made a better job building that rom
I consider the current froyo rom as only temporary - which is also why I still havent bothered with custom roms
Basically the roms now are all based on the poor rom from LG, and new roms needs to be made when the gingerbread update comes anyhow.

Well then you have a problem on your O2X...
We had 2 * HTC Desires S (still one kept for the wife) and those are a lot slower lol in everything We compared both with the two O2X.
When I have to do something for my wife on the old HTC Desire S well it scares now the heck out of me lol that slow
Amazing one year back I found it fast
I have 2 HTC Desire also - and they arent faster than the O2x by any means - but the rom is smoother. It doesnt have the slowdowns and lags you experience with the O2x, for instanse when installing apps in the market application. But open the gallery or the video list and you will see how much faster the O2x is, or play a game etc.
The O2x definetely are alot faster than the Desire, but the rom just needs optimisation in a few areas

Sorry forgot to mention I am already using Launcher Pro....
Not sure how people can say "the rom is smoother on Desire but it isn't faster"?!?!
Ok so the O2X might benchmark faster than the Desire, but who cares if the phone is unusable whilst installing something from the market... i'm talking "real world" here...
I came from HTC Desire too, and initially when I got the O2X, it was definitely not as smooth or fast as the Desire - especially when I ran it with GingerBread on the LauncherPro UI. Then I rooted the O2X and flashed MCR which improved things, but still felt laggy. Lately I have been using other custom ROMs (all based on MCR Fr12) and the latest versions are really very smooth and fast. Better than Desire? Not sure anymore; but I am definitely much happier with my O2X now with custom ROMs. I am now waiting for CM7 to come to O2X; that would really make the O2X show its true colors!
HTC desire is way slower than LG 2X by hardware
It is just that the newest HTC Sense for Desire is so much better than the LG stock roms.
So far all of the custom roms are based on the original LG rom, and even with the fix and optimization, it isn't getting us anywhere so far.
Im having this issue as well..
My incredible s is way faster for internet browsing...
Opening an app is fast on incredible s...
The screen display, games and videos that made me keep this 2x...
Still i wait for the next update and decide...
fantastic phone for sure..

Simple - theres only 2 places where the Desire are "faster" or smoother if you please. On the standard launcher swyping between the homescreens and when multitasking during app installation. These two issues tend to make people "beleive" the Desire is faster - its not, even if the launcher seems smoother when swyping.
The swyping is only an issue of the standard LG launcher - installing any other thirdparty launcher and swyping will be just as smooth/fast or even faster if you configure it to be under settings, than the Desire launcher.
The Multitasking lag during app installation is a bug on the LG, still not fixed - so this is still an issue. But its one single litle bug - this is hardly an issue to call the Desire faster overall and its not like you are constantly installing apps causing the phone to lag. Its a few seconds then you can move back to normal operation again.
But in any other operation of the phone the LG are much faster than the Desire, basically because the hardware is faster. Open a webpage and it loads faster, open the marked and the application listing loads alot faster, open the gallery and the thumbnails are updated much faster, swype between pictures are much smoother, open the video list and the thumbnails loads instantly, play a video is much smoother and allow much higher quality video, open any application and it loads faster, play any game and it plays smoother with better graphics (some of these games wont even be playable at all on the Desire), open any application that loads any type of content, like "pulse" and the content is loaded faster, Youtube loads and operates alot faster, videotrailer software etc. etc. etc.
In short the software on the LG are still a litle immature - propably because it was rushed by LG to be first on market with a dual core mobile. The HTC Desire's sense UI has been developed on for almost 2 years by HTC (before Desire on Legend for instance), so this is and feels less immature - it doesnt mean the Desire is faster.
My gf's Desire isn't as fast as my O2x, even with CM7 on it.
The hardware of the o2x is definitely faster, so it can only be the stock rom which subjective makes the mobile slower.
Keep in mind that LG focused to be the first company publishing a dual core mobile, mainly for PR.
The ROM probably played a minor role for the marketing guys ...
Hopefully they make it better with ginger bread. Otherwise, there's CM7 which will work for sure a lot better and smoother than the current stock-ROM
greets
It's just the UI that's faster on the Desire; the hardware itself is much slower, and outclassed even by same-generation devices (Nexus One, SGS). Any benchmarking tool will tell you that and show you in a nice little graph;
(don't mind me, I just love showing off my e-peen score )

Wow , thats what I call a big e-peen
My mate has a desire HD and had to do some surfing to get him to a webpage and I can tell you that it is sOOOOOooooooo much slower than my O2X (with stock rom, rooted with pauls patches.tweaks). It took a LOT longer to render webpages, Especially if they had flash on them than my O2X.

thing is, what do you use/want more: a snappy UI or more horse power in benchmarks? I might sounds like an apple fanboy now but I use the UI 99% more then a benchmark so for me the UI is more important. I'm back to my cm7 powered powerhouse that i call the desire HD for now; the lag in the UI is mostly part of that choice. Although I do agree that high demanding tasks like a 3D game are a lot smoother on an o2x

[Q] From Milestone to a HD2, is it really a "worthy" upgrade?

Hi there, I've been a happy milestone user since February, but I recently started feeling that the low memory available (and locked bootloader) on it was kinda holding back the whole "android experience" (I know that thanks to the devs here the stone performs as good as the hardware can, a lot better than what a 256mb of ram would lead you to believe) so I went ahead and got an European hd2 (I don't live in the US, so I´ll get 3g on it just fine) the thing is that the HD2 hasn't yet arrive, and now I´m kinda having second thoughts, as what I first considered on the HD2 as an advantage (the whole, multi os thing) may in fact, be a weakness, because it may be faster than the milestone running android, but it probably won´t be as stable and that may again, hold me from getting the best from android, to be honest I've owned an htc tilt(which I loved to the point I'd flash it several times a day almost everyday and also put android on it), a touch pro 2 (Sprint version, flashed the bytes out of this one too, put android on it as well) both winmo phones had issues when running android (constant data corruption, battery life, etc) then I got the milestone and it's been performing rock solid to this day and I just want to know if you guys think I did the right thing from an "upgrading" point of view. thanks
ps: I sold the stone, I'll be delivering it to his new owner :-(
maybe
well..it all depends on what you want out of your phone. When I had my milestone I did consider the hd2.
If you want a multimedia phone the HD2 will destroy the milestone. More ram, bigger screen. It also runs miui better than the milestone so widgets dont die and your browsing experience will be better.
The touchscreen is the same with tru multitouch. not the like the nexus 1.
However if you want to use the phone for gaming quite frankly they both suck. The milestone I found when i had it had the gpu to play the latest games but not enough ram. However it has a qwerty keyboard so gba, snes emulators worked well. Also gamevill games like zennonia and destinia works great on the qwerty.
But then again the HD2 isnt much better. The bigger screen is nice and so is the 512mb of ram. However it is cursed with an adreno 200 gpu which is marginally slower the the sgx530 found in the milestone. The adreno 200 simply isnt going to cut it for any graphically demanding game. Even NOVA 1 lags slightly. You can forget about dungoen defenders on the HD2. though having said that chainfire does do HD2 drivers which seem to boost 3d performance a lot.
So basically yes from milestone to hd2 is an upgrade. sort of. HD2 has an unlocked bootloader so you can get custom kernels.
what i would recommned you to do if u get the hd2 is to install miui, install an undervolting kernel d then use a media player like rockplayer (software decoding) for video formats the the system player cannot play. Do that and you basically have an evo 4g which is one of the best phones of all time but sadly not available in the UK
Don't fret. I'm writting this from my touchpro 2 running xandroid (2.2 is what I'm using, 2.3 is out but buggy in beta). I haven't booted into winmo for actual use in months, and current uptime is almost a week. Android on winmo is much more stable than it used to be, batery performance is closer to what it should be. Bluetooth can still be a little funky (so I've heard, I don't use it), but hey, camera and and sound are rocking good now! Clocked at 600 MHz, performance in an active app is similar to what I see on my droid. Actually loading apps is much slower, I'm guessing because it is reading it from the sd rather than nand. But once loaded it is all good. I think you'll be happy with the HD2.

Galaxy SII
Why dont you try the Samsung Galaxy SII.. that has shown to have improved performance over HD2 and many other multicore processor phones and even has a better GPU...
Also again if you really need a new phone, thats completely a personal choice..
Even thought the RAM on milestone is limited it is good enough for daily basic use for browsing light games and avi videos etc...
But if you wanna play high demanding 3d games you gotta move on..
Also Milestone does not play HD videos smoothly.. tried everything to make it do this...
Its totally upto you... you have the cash, you have the interest go for it,
Also try not to fall in te marketing trap of these mobile companies where every new phone is branded as a must have and a zillion times better than your old one..
The final question is do you really need it.
Thanks all for your comments.
@thre3aces: yes, I know about the poor performance the HD2 gpu has when compared to the milestone's gpu, but I figured that a bit more of ram and processor horsepower would help the adreno 200 gpu a bit, although I am not expecting anything spectacular from it, I'm planning to play a few games, but what I really want is a smoother experience from my phone and judging by the youtube videos I've seen, when it comes to the GUI, the HD2 perform almost as good as a Desire HD if you don't try to push it too far anyways, so overall I think that I can live with a worse gpu performance as long as the rest performs better.
@cbeck:
I'm glad the TP2 is still going on strong, I loved that phone, best full physical qwerty keyboard on a phone ever.
@lord_neo: I'm on a tight budget right now, I sold the Milestone for $147 and got the HD2 used for $200, for that's a fair price for a mildly used HD2. And even if I could afford the SG2 I wouldn't buy as I don't like the feel of the phone on my hands, it's too slim for my taste, I admit it is a beast of a phone, though and the screen is awesome.

Yea so if ur gonna be trying to play dungeon defenders or nova 2 u will be fine with a hd2. Just a hint if u r gonna get it 2nd hand id recommend getting a new battery for it. Chances r since the hd2 is an old lone tags battery in it is probably very worn out

HTC Desire X Announced. Bring on more roms :P

hey guys
new htc desire x got announced. when it comes out. lets port sense 4.1
http://androidheadlines.com/2012/08...-inch-screen-beats-audio-ics-on-a-budget.html
I have been confused by this device. Is it a dual core low end 1ghz snapdragon s4?
And which version of sense? Being dual core have they given it the full sense 4.1 treatment or a new sense 4.1a?
Sent from my Nexus 7
Logic would say full sense.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using Tapatalk 2
Why would logic say that? That would be awesome, like the sensation XL was last year
if its full sense 4.1 I will cry from happiness
But, the device is pretty low on ram for today's standards, so that's why I assumed its a sense lite device
Also the processor is a pretty low clock speed compared with full sense devices
Hopefully I'm wrong

Interesting I just postet this 2 or 3 days ago and no f**ks were given Whatever, it'll be awesome. Full Sense and perfekt resolution. SO no resizing and better look and feel
Engadget has a hands on video of the phone, it doesn't have the fancy zoom animations that the one x/s have, sure its full sense?
have a look at the music player too, I can't remember correctly but the sense 4a music player was different iirc, this one resembles the full sense one

Looks like full Sense to me. The zoom animations from Project X aren't actually in the original Sense 4, it's just a sweet change from JellyBean... Also in my music player I don't have the select player function as you see on the Desire X. Also the buttons on the top right of the player show also soundbound and I think cover upload.
EDIT: I went trough another few reviews and I guess 3D Rosie means full Sense
I think the zoom animations are sense 4, they are slightly different to the jb ones, infinity uses the stock animations and there is a difference
So does it have the 3d Rosie?

Yes it does! Just saw it then haha
But the homescreen transitions are slightly different, I don't know how to describe it
But they definitely remind me of the GS3

That's maybe because of Sense 4.1... As I know they reduced and changed a few animations for better smoothness and battery.

Yeah, that was my thought, too! Would be just awesome if we get a RUU leak very soon
sense 4.1 is nice! :victory:
Just edited the wrong cmt how dumb was that? Anyway, I just read a review and it's not entirely full Sense. It's sth between full and lite. It doesn't have the Sense recent apps (stock is better anyway) and it doesn't have the homescreen overview. But according to htc it's not the final software build so they may change sth till we get it...
Question:
Would this be a good mid ranged smartphone to buy when it comes out price 280 euro i gues.
Or are there way better ones out now with higher, better specs? Cause im gonna buy a new one from now to 2 weeks
( Googling and reading shizz on the web to make up my mind )
My old Gio lowass did its job and im ready to go Mid ranged now and with googling i came across this new phone and it looks nice but maybe people here think different?
Any help would be appreciated :victory:
This phone actually has a pretty crappy SoC. It's the S4, but more specifically it's an S4 Play MSM8225. It has a dual core CortexA5 processor, an Adreno 203 GPU and is manufactured at 45nm unlike the higher end S4's which use a 28nm process. Modern dual core SoC's are of the CortexA9 variety, (although the S4 is "based on" the CortexA15) which is significantly more powerful.
In comparison, our phone has an S2 CortexA8 and an Adreno 205 GPU which just might be better than the dual core A5, due to it's older architecture. I'm not completely sure though.

Haha, yea that post was definitely filled with a bunch of tech jargon. Basically, it's a much crappier version of the Snapdragon S4 inside the Desire X.

I would recommend a different phone if you're looking for mid-range. Check out prices on last year's high-end models, that way you're still getting a good phone and if it's high-end, it'll have good dev support. (For example Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Sensation, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, etc)
Or if you're willing to spend a bit more cash, check out the HTC One S, that's a GREAT mid-range phone.

The new Nexus4 is out

AWESOME! Gf is getting me the Nexus 10 for Xmas, and I'll buy myself a Nexus 4 around the same time! 2560x1600 10" display, here I come! :highfive:
Never thought that the price would be so unbeatable! Maaan, why did I buy a Galaxy Nexus?
Oh for the love of god! What is with the lack of expandable storage in Nexus devices? I mean, this looks like the perfect device for me, but that lack of an SD Card is a real killer. 16 gig maximum storage, and no option to upgrade? What is this, an iPhone?

No offence but having a Nexus 7 now, I think it would be a bit boring to have two AOSP devices. Especially coming from sense I used to have AOSP before my N7, but now I only use sense on my IncS

Same here, I used an 8GB for about half a year before upgrading to 16GB. Never had a problem with space, I just delete apps I don't use and clean out junk folders. I also backup important stuff on my SD card, and then format it every couple of months to keep it clean.

While you do have a good point, I've never liked Sense or other skins anyways. Given the choice, I'd always choose an AOSP ROM over a Sense ROM. Pretty much the only reason I'm using a Sense ROM is because it's stable. Sense ROM's are fun to play around with for something new, but I quickly get bored of the limited options available in Rosie and uninstall it and replace it with Apex Launcher. Even tweaked Sense bores me, plus Sense is pretty heavy and I always feel like AOSP is noticeably smoother.
Plus, with a Nexus, I wouldn't have to put up with half-assed, hacked together AOSP ROM's. No offense to any devs! It's just stupid that some things related to a device (drivers, company proprietary libs etc) are never available and have to be hacked to work. I hate that, it's very annoying. With a Nexus, I don't have to worry about that. (I think?...)

I have a 16gb N7 and 16gb card in my phone, they get filled with backups of roms lol
I use dropbox and I have a USB OTG cable for all the haevy stuff like movies
I completely agree with your statement on AOSP roms and their stability. While some roms are quite good and fast, none can match a proper AOSP device, like a nexus. None. My N7 is super fast and I underclock it to 1.15GHz to save battery
This is the reason I might be going Sony next: their roms are quite AOSP-like and their source is similar to AOSP, no big changes like Samsung and HTC
Most AOSP and other JB roms for other devices (I mean custom roms) do not have proper project butter working, eg. CM10 on the exynos devices because there is no proper source for drivers and stuff. Although this might change with the Nexus 10

I used to have a crapload of backups as well, but I realized it would be more efficient to simply keep one backup of my favorite ROM at the time. I try to keep that one backup as current as possible. I gotta get an external HDD to store my music and movies as well
Yes we did have some great devs working on AOSP for our device, and they did a damn great job IMO. It's just the company that limits how good AOSP ROM's are due to not releasing sources for certain components, forcing the community to resort to hacks and other trickery to get it working properly. Damn it must be nice to be able to actually underclock without creating a laggy device. I feel like it's absolutely necessary to OC the Inc S to 1.3 GHz on AOSP, and 1.4-5GHz on Sense, in order to get a decent experience. Not that big of a deal, seeing as there were quite a few phones released with the same SoC as ours, but ran at 1.4GHz stock so the SoC can obviously handle the OC, luckily.
I'm strongly considering Sony as well, if they release a device by Xmas that has at least an S4 Pro SoC, preferably a true Cortex A-15 based SoC. They seem to be one of few companies that really do open up their phones completely for the community, and that's pretty much the #1 most important decision that will decide what phone I get.

Wow I keep mine at 1024MHz all the time. I overclock it to 1.4 sometimes when I play heavy games but that is it. I don't think my N7 has ever seen past 1.4GHz, when I was testing one of faux123's kernels
I think Sony might wait until MWC next year in Jan or whenever it is, because they just released new phones. But I don't need top performance on my phone anymore, I use it for calling, texting, xda-ing and a bit of internet. I play games and do more processor-intensive things on my Nexus 7

Ihad considered this but in England LG does not have the best reputation so I tend to stay away. Also, the HOX+ is meant to have one of the better cameras around and I don't know how is feel if the N4 cam isn't as good. I've also became a fan of sense .....
However, I am deffo getting the N10 device. I'll probs get it after Xmas when the initial rush has gone. Then I can read my magazines, books and general browsing easyier than on a phone.

I worry that these Nexus devices may start a president with regards to lack of removable storage. I understand Google's thinking behind using the Cloud as a portable storage medium, but my 500mb a month contract means downloading/streaming anything over data is pretty much out of the question. And living in the sticks means my data connection is flaky most of the time anyway. Until the price of truly 'unlimited' data plans drops considerably, and until coverage becomes better for non-built up areas, cloud storage is pointless for me.
I also notice there's no support for LTE on this device, but given the price that's hardly an issue.
Think I'll be waiting for the 32gb model to.
For me 16GB is totally enough. I had 8GB for a year and it was a bit too less but now I have 16GB on my GNex and I never get it even close to full So no Cloud stuff for me

I hate it when there's noticeable lag, and I've always been picky about the performance of all my technological devices lol. I'm actually running my CPU at 1.5GHz right now on smartassv2. I still get good battery life despite the big OC, and I haven't noticed any instability at all. Also helps that I UV'ed 50mv I've always preferred performance over battery life. I'd rather have a snappy device that dies an hour quicker, than a slightly laggy device that lasts longer.
Yea, that's what I was thinking. Unfortunate. But I really want that Nexus 4, especially at that price! I'll be honest, I love google right now. They're pushing the boundaries(in a good way) on pricing for top end devices, and I f**king love it!

I hardly have any lag with my settings now
Mine can't handle any UV at 1.4GHz I noticed that while playing shadowgun, it kept freezing and not responding to anything but a battery pull
The only other thing that might keep me away is no 4G Hopefully the camera is a beast
Yeah the S4 quad looks really good. I can get the same performance with my N7 running at those speeds, but no way near the efficiency. I am also interested in the audio chip, because the S4 one is supposed to be really good, compared to the Tegra 3 one.

I still notice lag even at 1.5GHz sometimes. Annoying. Hmm that's strange, even at 1.5GHz I don't have any instabilities with UV. I really want to upgrade, to me the Inc S is showing its age internally. Especially in RAM, 2GB of RAM will be heaven. Still in love with the gorgeous color saturation in the screen though!
Meh, 4G isn't to big a deal for me. I have it available in Whitehorse, but HSPA+ is good enough for when I don't have wifi. I just can't resist the price, and I'm thinking about going on pay-as-you-go instead of the ass-rapingly expensive contracts. I practically never call anyone (who does these days?) so I only need data.
The S4 Pro's GPU especially looks very promising. Much better than the Mali 400 in the Exynos 4 series, according to early reports. Plus it's as close as I'll get to a Cortex A15 cpu That's great news, I was hoping the N4 would have a decent audio chip.
Hehe, let's all conspire to take over the N4 forums. All Inc S user's at once abandon this device, and move full force into the N4 forums! :silly::victory: Seriously though, the more people that come from this great community to the N4 forums, the better. :good:

That's not fair Oh well, you use 1.5 more than I do I think its processor is showing its age. Some things I am used to using my N7 for, and the IncS is THAT much slower at doing things. But on Venom, everything is super smooth Same with your rom actually, although I used the ultra smooth rosie (I am too on Venom)
I am thinking about getting off a contract too, and buying the phone outright. But, when you add both up it would probably be cheaper still to go on a plan here, for maybe $50 a month or whatever they will give the N4 away free on
Yes, the GPU is a monster, apparently it smashes the Tegra 3 which has a massive GPU, super powered. The Tegra 3 is soo powerful, even at the underclocked speeds I have it at now, I can't actually imagine what you could do with more power at this time.
Don't abandon this device because I am staying here until May next year!
