[RESOLVED-THANKS GREG!!]market issue-across the boards(please help?) - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

EDIT:
RESOLVED
THANKS GREG :-D
ok heres the scoop
i first starting noticed it today when just messing around trying diffferent apps (check out "spring ball" simple but fun!) the app downloaded, but upon completion, the market.vending force closed. i tried and retried and retried and no apps would install. thinking the issue was my rom, i did a fresh wipe and reflash. market worked!
-regawmod
later in the day the issue started again. fresh wipe and reflash. market worked!
-regawmod
again.
-regawmod
sick and tired of reflashing, i flashed fresh 2.0d in hopes to avoid the error. flash was sucessful, had fun themeing, market worked! once again, messing around with some new apps, the issue persisted. fresh wipe and reflash. market worked!
again.
-fresh2.0d
again
-fresh2.0d
GOD DAMMIT. in hopes to correct whatever the issue was i flashed damages latest, thinking, hey, its the closest to stock thats available in regards to 2.1, shouldnt have any issues. issue STILL persists.
i posted the issue in flipz thread, with a confirmation of the same issue from another user, but no fix (mondays apparently arent dev days lol; FLIPZ WHERE ARE YOU?!)
information:
i have the latest prl and flipz pri. i have stock radio and latest recovery (green nexusbear :-D). the fact is, whatever rom i flash, in the BEGINNING i am able to download all my apps, but after about a half hour, everytime i download an app from the market, it finishes downloading, then the market force closes, and the app just sits there at "xxx sucessfully downloaded" no install at all. i can still install from my SD card. at the beginning of every flash, i admit i go on a huge deletion spree via root explorer, but i have done my research and know what is safe to remove, i dont think thats the issue; maaaybe it is?
normally i would post a logcat, but i cant download and install it to post it!
anymore confirmations of the same issue, any FIXES?
tia

i hate to bump, as much as you hate to see it, but i could really use some help on this one

This happened to me too several times. There's a very easy fix
Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Market -> Uninstall Updates
Ta-da If you have an uninstaller app it's even easier!

For whatever reason, there is an update being installed to Vending.apk. It doesn't do anything except for break it. Market will still work (the way it's supposed to actually), you're not really uninstalling anything.
And yes, you did

hm. i do a few metamorphs upon initial flash of a rom (namely 3g icon over ev, and sometimes a lockscreen) could one of these be breaking them?
thank for the link. running damages latest, but dear GOD do i hate the stock rosie. espresso is my flavor
btw; your the one who got me completely addicted to metamorph: THANKS! i dont think many people see the benifits of it, and its too bad. it should DEFINATLY be our main scource for theming. really strips down the elements to personalize it to YOUR needs :-D i refuse to flash updates anymore for themes lol
okokok back on topic, im going to give it a test now and report back before the night is out.
thanks a ton greg!

No it couldn't. While the Rosie morphs DO edit com.htc.resources.apk (the same place where the 3g icon is) they don't touch the status bar icons, just the Rosie pngs in drawable-port-mdpi.
Glad I could be of help

rightright make sense, dumb question; the whole IDEA of metamorph is to only edit the specific files in the .thm right? der
thanks again, and like i said, ill report back later
off to customize
:-D

ok report
i wiped and reflashed damagecontrol
i let it sit for a few before installing anything
i installed a few apps, and it went great
BUT
as soon as i downloaded and installed metamorph and applied the 3g icon, the market force closed.
going in for your fix now, greg

greg buddy your fix worked like a charm :-D
i hope to see you over at the evo portal once its released
thanks!

TouchPal in Market!

I got this app from the market today. It actually works rather well, and there is no force closing that i have experienced so far. I have tried it with dict on and off and all 3 keyboard styles. One thing i do like about it over the hero keyboard is the difference in the haptic feedback.... the hero one has a strong vibration and the touchpal has a sort of softer one that is just enough to let you know your touch registers... anyone else tried it out? I know the touchpal keyboard was in a few of the ROM releases and themed ROM releases, maybe you guys can delete that one and download this one to avoid the FC...
I just got it from the market, and I get a ton of FCs
Bummer, I can't even use it all.
i cant get it to install keeps saying package wasnt signed or some bull...
weird... let me pull it and see if i can post it here with the language pack...
I found it too laggy on my Hero
here is link for touchpal- http://sharebee.com/bb36265d
language pack- http://sharebee.com/2708b7f6
i downloaded it this morning and it has been working fine for me all day. hope this helps you guys
only thing i hate is that it keeps opening in landscape and i don't want to keep pressing shift+space over and over again to close it. Overall great VK though
i can't even install it...
i'm using Cyan's 3.6.8.1 ROM and I got a message "TouchPal could not be installed on this phone" while trying to install the main app...
Is there anybody who have met this?

Im on the same rom and not having any issues just make sure you download touchpal main first let it install then install the language pack wait until its done installing and give it a go. works like champ
ss1271 i dont know why it wont install for you. only diff ive done to my phn was a dark hero theme and changed the setting to where "tmo my account" works again.
Working for me on Cyanogen 3.9.8. Like the program, like to see what they do with Traditional Chinese pack.
Sounds like it'd be expensive though once it's no longer free.
Blah its nice but my sound still doesnt work?? and evertime its open theres an EN in the notification which annoys me. I love the swiping to use the symbols and numbers, they should make a swipe down across the entire keyboard makes it hide the keyboard. Also its messing with the HTC keyboard everytime i intsall this the settings on my HTC one reset and wont stick when i change them? Sticking with Touch/HTC_IME for now

If you were running the beta you must uninstall it. The new version will not install over the top.

I'm pretty sure that i've installed the MAIN first then the language pack...
and i've uninstalled (use app. management in settings) the beta version which embedded into the CM 3.6.8.1 long time ago...
but i still got a message saying that installing this program will replace another while trying to install the main app of touchpal v1.0 ...

yup
i uninstalled the beta version and then used "root explorer" to check if it has been completely deleted...
but failed again...
cant get it to stop force closing am i doing something wrong? WATAFAK? ok well is it better than better keyboard in all of your opinion?
Been using it on a stock G1 since the day it hit the market (used their winmo ver previously) and haven't had a single problem
For those with Problems installing it:
Deleting the .apk is not sufficient, you need to remove all occurences of libtouchpal also...
adb shell find / >files.txt
just search the file for "touchpal" and
adb shell rm
all findings
Had this problem with a version shipped with Palm Pre Theme (I think...)

[Rooting] In all honesty, is it really worth it? Im thinking about going back to stoc

**Edit: I was completely wrong.. I figured out everything, i know what i'm doing now lol.. thanks guys.
My first time rooting was a couple days ago when i had learned about the "1 Click Root" method...
I succeeded, got that latest ROM (to my knowledge) CM6 RC2 from the trusty (lol) ROM Manager.. which i enjoy a lot since im rooted and what not. I also themed my ROM a couple times to (what i think) are pretty cool themes..
But anyways, to make a boring story short (lol).. I absolutely hate (with a passion) wiping my data to my phone when i see or hear about this awesome new theme i want.. people say it is a must to wipe ur phones data to apply the "best" effect..
This gets REALLY old.. i had to do this like three times yesterday because i kept seeing new themes i wanted lol.. Re-entering passwords and re downloading all of your apps everytime you want a new ROM or want to apply a theme is too much work for how "great" rooting is.. Dont get me wrong, i love the new style of my phone, it looks amazing, but man! do i really have to keep wiping data to apply the things i want??
I now, noticed that all my contacts are not my phone. Only the contacts phones numbers on facebook that i had sync'd.. "My" contacts that i have in my phone are not there.. I imported them from my sim card and re-booted, but still not there.. Could this be because of my theme?
To what really made me mad was my camera, it keeps force closing.. Is this also because of the theme? I have the normal radio ending in 4.06.00.12_7.. I do not know if it didnt work before i applied the theme or when i rooted, i just realized last night it didnt work.. i do not want to re flash cm6 to see if the camera is working just because i do not want to "start" all over again.. with wiping and all that... if i have to, sadly, i will.
I had stock froyo frf91 before i rooted my phone.. in all honesty, should i just un root my phone and go back to the way it was? because if i have to keep wiping data, and starting over, im going to blow a fuse lol..
*** Sorry for my aggressive tone everybody, i just would like everything to be a smooth ride wth no wiping and i can apply themes as easy as 123 without losing data.. is there any ROM or theme that you could recommend?
please, someone help me... thanks xda community
I don't ever wipe when I upgrade to the next version of cyan, so I don't lose a single thing. People say to wipe if you have problems. But you shouldn't have problems which means you don't need to wipe. It runs perfectly fine for me this way with no issues at all, no force closes, etc.

Really? hmm.. ok thanks man.. but in rom manager when you downlaod something, it brings up an option saying backup and wipe.. do i have to click that or can i just cancel and just go ahead and reboot..?
The way I do it (maybe not the fastest) is to set up your rom exactly how you want it, nandroid, then install any mods that might eff up your installation. Once you've installed the mod and you're 100% sure mms/wifi/bt/gmail/etc are all working, you can nandroid again and use that as your base.
The only time you'd need to wipe is if you want to set up another rom so you could switch back and forth between different roms.
And by different roms I don't mean updates within roms, like CM6 nightlies or enom's updates, I mean completely different roms like CM6 as opposed to enom.

Ok thank you.. what about for themes and what not...? it says i have to wipe as well....
Your problem looks to be trying to navigate complicated stuff with lack of skills.
There is a good reason to root "old-fashioned" way, without 1-click stuff: if you read all you need to read and understand (various guides that teach you how to work with recovery etc) to root, then you won't get lost when rooted. Now you're trying to do stuff without even knowing, how things work, and let me guess - you didn't read any guide, you don't know how to work with recovery w/o ROM manager and don't know how to load a ROM, etc.
My suggestion is - go to Development section, open the stickies with guides and start reading. Do the same in General section, and don't skip the Wiki either.
Root brings you full control of the system, and it's excellent - knowing your way you can do tons of stuff, theming being the least interesting/important. But to control, you need to know and understand more than "1-click stuff".
Or you can just go back to stock, if you see no added value in a rooted phone.

What theme are you talking about, I don't recall seeing any themes requiring a wipe.
The only thing I can think of is a pre-themed rom. If you don't know the difference between a theme and a themed rom, you should follow Jack's advice and read up.
Your mistake is thinking that because there is an option to wipe in Rom Manager, then it must be necessary. No it isn't. The option is there for the people who want to wipe, but upgrading from one CM to another won't need it, themes won't need it, etc.
It is your job to know when it is needed or not. And you get that by reading and understanding how your phone works.
just wipe the Cache and the Dalvik Cache, the only time you must fully wipe is if you get boot loop when flashing a new rom/mod/etc.

You just uncheck the wipe one. Besides you can just use recovery and don't have to use ROM manager.

You certainly do not wipe to install a theme. That makes no sense! You would lose all your data all the time.

I'm still running stock unrooted. One off the main reason why i don't really want to root is because I know how customizable our phones are, and i love new things.. like you, if i was to see a new theme Or rom I'd jump on it straight away. I don't think I'd ever stop!!

Honestly that's exactly why I didn't root for 3 months. But once I found my exact setup now I just know how to setup each new ROM quickly. After that point now its just fun to tinker the phone and try the cyan nightly. It's really better to just root it. I was in the same spot as you I know what you mean.

New leak 2.3.15 DEODEXED zip

Found the zip file for the new leak. Didn't see posted here other than by using the blackhat app.
Haven't tried it, so use it at your own risk. I'm not liable for any damage to your phone or you
http://www.mediafire.com/file/drixq6ry6ja83oq/DX-2315-Deodexed.zip
Instructions:
Bootstrap Recovery, Mount, Mount System, Apply Update.zip
I don't know how to do the first 3, so if anyone could elaborate for those noobs like me would be awesome
You can follow the original thread on another forum
http://androidforums.com/droid-x-all-things-root/179646-new-froyo-2-3-15-a.html
Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules. If I am let me know, and I'll take the link out
You can find the Droid X bootstrap app in the market. Just download it and run, then select boot into recovery, scroll down to Mount & Storage, mount system, apply zip. This is all assuming your already rooted.

Rom manager doesn't work on my droid for some reason. It reboots the phone but nothing else. My phone is rooted. I don't know if I should buy this and it doesn't work
But thank you for explaining what to do very helpful
Rom Manager and the Bootstrap tool are two seperate utilities. Search under koush to find it if your having trouble. You don't need rom manager in order to install roms.

Hey
I downloaded it. I hit bootstrap recovery and then the second link. It rebooted and got to the "green screen". I went to back up and restore and hit it. Now my screen is black. Did I messed up my phone, is it normal and takes a while, or can I just pull out the battery and start fresh??
EDIT: Forget it got it, it was empty, I just hit the power button and it went back to normal....
Actually I'm supposed to hit the camera button not the home button, I just saw that :/

You are definitely NOT breaking any rules.
The leak is just that, a leak of a Verizon test ROM, or perhaps Moto, but leaked software nonetheless.
It is not anyones original work other that Google, Verizon, Moto.
If it was a ROM Developers personally modded tweaked themed built ROM, then it would be inappropriate.
I feel that leaks should always be given to the community for free if someone gets ahold of one, its better for the community.
Anyways...I have installed and works fine...no significant changes from. 13 I have seen.
Cheers!

The market speed on this leak SUCKS. If you're happy with what you have, stay there. You gain absolutely NOTHING from updating to this.
If you want, I can make you a build.prop that says your running 2.3.15 and it'd be the same thing. You'd never notice.

I had a similar issuing going from the first leak to the second. What I did is simply restored the original market that I had backed up via Titanium backup. I suspect just clearing the cache and resetting defaults will have the same result.

No, I tried everything. Clearing cache/data did nothing. I did a checkin, a *228, and replaced build.props, everything. Only thing i didnt do was restoring a market from Titanium. Glad it worked for you, but I really dont notice a difference or see any need whatsoever to make this "upgrade".
Look at the thread on MyDroidWorld.com about it lol It seems more like a bug reporting thread than a "thanks for the good work" thread.
Thanks venc.

D'oh they did fix it. My guess is it didn't sync with the build bot for #184.. I bet #185 will have it. Nevertheless, the fix is here for 6.1 stable users.

flashed the zip, worked wonders.
Maybe I'm just "special" but I didn't know there was a way to rotate with multi-touch. I installed the latest nightly, flashed this file... now what do I do?
Thanks!
Any idea if this would work on MIUI?

It's in apps like google maps 5 which allow you to rotate the map using multitouch.
Sorry for the confusion.
Also, it might work for MIUI. There's nothing special about the fix.. it just adds permissions for the discrete multitouch interface.
works with nightly 174.
i flashed to miui, doesnt appear to have changed anything?
Thanks a lot for this. Works great.
That did it!
Thanks!
Sent from my Droid Ostentatious
Confirmed working on nightly 184.
flawless with Stable 6.1 thank you
The 3d viewing multitouch doesnt seem to be working for me and i am running the most recent nightly build. Is there a special setting that needs to be activated or something i am missing?
Gosh dammit. I ran this from Nandroid Recovery. My phone boots all screwed up now with an endless wave of force closes of any and all apps. Can't use LauncherPro, only ADWLauncher. Son of a b____!

Enjoy. All I did was pack up the CM fix.

The attached zip you gave in the main message caused my phone to go into a continual force close once the phone boots. All apps are force closing on the screen and a middle eastern song started playing initially. UGH!
No issues so far with nightly #177. Thanks!

Yikes! I did stress to back up.. you never know what can happen.
Well I'm not sure what to say.. the update has worked fine on many phones (even a moto droid).. so I'm sure it works.
I don't know where the middle eastern song could have came from. The zip only contains an update-script and the fixed xml file.
If you guys can give me some more info, rom, updates, some possible causes.. maybe I can help you. I'm going to post the md5sum, so maybe you guys can double check that the file downloaded all the way. I'm not here to make malicious posts.. so something else must have happend..

It's my own fault for not creating a backup first. I thankfully did a full backup on 12-15 so I'm restoring that now (after doing a full wipe).
I'm running CM 6.1 stable, Invisiblek #17 AOSP kernel. I don't think you're creating a malicious post. Who knows where the problem lies. It could have been anything and just triggered with the fix you posted. I'll let you know how it goes after the restore.

I was running 6.1 stable. After flashing over with the 184 nightly, rotate didn't work for me either. Restored back to 6.1 and applied this fix, and now it's working fine.
I've flashed over many nightlies with no issues, always assuming all of the fixes were in place. Do the changes in the nighties only completely apply with a full wipe? Do some of them not apply with a flash over? Actually in this case it appears they don't. That is concerning...

The updates do apply on a flash over. The merge wasn't synced with the buildbot yet.. so probably won't work until 185

Android Market Unstable?

Hello all,
After flashing CyanogenMod the other day, I decided I didn't like it too much. ( Mind you, I just use my phone for basic phone stuff, so please don't flame me for it. xD ) So I used a nandroid to go back to my original (rooted) stuff.
However, in doing this, it seems that it messed up my Market app somehow.
Whenever I try to search, open, or do anything involving the Market App, it'll say: Attention. A network error has occurred. Retry, or cancel and return to the previous screen.
It's been like this for a while now. I can use internet, voice-to-text, and anything else that requires data ( not even WiFi works with Market ), but not Market.
What can I do to fix this?
Full wipe. Fresh install of rom+gapps.
Yea its Me Again With The
Modified Hero
@laie - he said he nanded back to rooted stock
@OP - try the nand restore again? Otherwise you could try adb shell fix_permissions?

It tells me that "fix_permissions: not found"
Edit: I've got it fixing now, will edit with update.
Edit(2): It didn't help, sadly.
I don't even remember, but does rooted stock 1.5 allow you to install non-market apps? If so, go find a market 2.3.6 apk on xda or google. Delete the one you have, boot into recovery wipe cache and then reboot, install the app - see if that'll work.
Nope, that didn't work sadly... Ironically, my Market worked perfectly without the updates installed. Is it possible just to block all updates for the Market apk?
this might work for you. a friend was having similar problem. this is what i did (note, i really really think that it was pure coincidence but...) go to SETTINGS -> APPLICATIONS -> MANAGE APPS. locate Market, if Force Stop is not greyed out. then click it, then click Clear Data.
like i said, his was having the same problem, i really think that it may have been a coincidence, but maybe not.

Yes, you need to delete the system app "marketupdater.apk". Also, if you go into settings/manage apps/all/market - can you click the button "uninstall updates"? If not, do you know what market version you had that worked? If so try to find and install that one using the same steps as I mentioned before. If that doesn't work, I'm at a loss.
Also what ngholson just posted is a good idea along with clear cache from the same menu.
I hope you get it figured out, good luck.

Yea and??? He can still start fresh. He posted he did a nand back to his rooted stuff. Which means he can srart fresh. As in wipe data, cache dev-cache and sd-ext. Boot up and then reboot back into recovery reflash gapps. Boot up. Load tb go into settings, manage apps locate market force stop and clear data. Open tb up locate market updater apk. Uninstall. Reboot should be good.

The problem version is 2002306, oddly enough, I've overheard some other people having problems with it as well at a place a friend works. Maybe it's a stock hero thing. I'll revert to an older version, maybe one day this will clear itself out.
Thank you everyone for participating in helping me. At least it was a good effort.

Laie I was just telling you, don't get all frisky. If you read the OP again, you'll see he WANTS to be on stock 1.5. I couldn't tell you why lol. Maybe you forgot (it's been forever) but stock and sense based ROMs already contain gapps. You only flash those on AOSP based ROMs, so he can't reflash gapps. If he wiped and then nand restored it would've restored /system which is where the market would live in a stock ROM. His issue was likely a market auto-update which did not agree with old ass donut stock. Who knows. I wasn't bashing you, and I'm not now, calm down. Hopefully this info helps you help someone later. Peace.
OP- I have ONE MORE idea. Go grab a themed market zip from xda member "pendo" - he has green, blue, and red. They should flash from recovery. Delete your current market app FIRST, and clear cache and dalvik cache in recovery, flash and reboot. Good luck.
EDIT: 2 ideas I guess, copy the nand backup to your computer, find the "marketupdater.apk" in /system/app and delete it out of the nand. Copy that new nand to the same place as the current one you have and try to wipe all then restore that newish one.... I actally have NO idea if you can alter a nand or the system.img it contains, but it may be worth a shot. You could also just give up, and get gingerbread, because it's AWESOME.

LOL agreed.
@OP - You could also try one of the *ahm* market replacements. like *ahm* applanet or something (not sure how 'legal' they are but...)
also, i know someone mentioned it before but did you ever get your permissions fixed? if not try that too, you can do it from ROM Manager.

Duce were in the op does he say he's looking to get back to 1.5??? Humm think you might be reading to much " lol " eyes playing tricks on you??? He said he restored his rooted stuff. Not restored 1.5. And nope I remember 1.5 and I'm aware of the gapps only flash with aosp. I posted my comment because he didn't say 1.5 so I took a guess as he was not on 1.5 because he didn't mention it. So mabey this will help you help someone in the future slow it down when ya read. Pendo's themed market wouldn't flash, sadly. And it's a shame too, because they look really great.
@ngholson
I looked into that, but it's permissions are a bit much.
@laie1472
I'm really sorry, you're right, I forgot to mention what I'm using.
It's:
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Build: 2.27.651.5
Again, I'm sorry for not mentioning that.
I redid everything on it, the only thing I haven't touched is the radio file.
When I tried CyanogenMod 6 at the start of this thread, it had me flash 2.42.01.04.27. Could that be the problem?
And I'm terribly sorry for the delay in replying. Other issues are stealing my time.
Ok let's start from scratch. What rom, recovery, kernel & mods are you using?? Also whats your prl, and are you s-off???
Yea its me again. With the

ROM: Stock (and rooted) 2.1 Eclair.
Recovery: RA-heroc-v1.6.2

Android Bios Boot animation
LauncherPro
That's about it. I think it's all worked flawlessly until the radio, but I'm not sure. If I'm missing any info, please let me know.
maybe consider starting completely over. download a new rom, i recommend aospcmod. download the latest version of gapps at the same time. if you don't already have it install ROMManager from errr. damnit your market doesn't work... hopefully you already have it. Open rom manager and install a custom recovery (i recommend clockworkmod) once that is done copy both the new rom and gapps zips to your sdcard, reboot to recovery (either manually or using rommanager) wipe everything. then select 'choose zip from sdcard' (or similar, can't remember exact verbiage) and install your ROM, then before you let it reboot, then use the same option and install gapps as well, then reboot. follow setup and it should work fine.
