yup not to mention hex editing etc...I am working on a theme now and let me tell you after being a 8 year Blackberry user its a whole different thing...dont get me wrong creating and editing svg's and layering theme for blackberry wasnt the easiest thing to learn this is just "different".
So not to be long winded any noobs or anyone for that matter interested in starting a theme there are some fantastic tutorials and loads of helpful fellows over in the heroc forum. Hopefully in the not so distant future we as the Eris community will have our own talented group of themers instead of just porting or simply being able to flash a hero theme. Good Luck and be patient.

what are some of the other files to edit png's in other than framework-res.apk and com.htc.resources.apk? the wifi, gps, etc. on and off widget/icon and the dialer keypad in particular. using the leakbase rom jcase posted if it matters. thanks.

iflip : a blackberry theme already exists via marketplace for GDE
magnum : the way i started was via windows. i was grab each apk .. edit the extension to .zip extract it and dive in the MDPI folder ( thats the folder ur gonna want to get into to edit themes.)
if ur using linux just jump in the apk and check out the icon_launcher's. thats gonna be a great starting point..since at least 22 icons need to be changed for a theme LOL
i kno i kno..its a p.i.a. but u asked ...

Thanks, yea i'm on windows, takes a little time going through all the png's lol.

HtcDialer.apk and Phone.apk will contain the png's to change the phone dialer.

I was looking into making a theme or at least just changing some things around in the one ROM I'm running now. The two questions I have is how do I re-zip the ROM and how do I sign it so it will work? I'm running snow leopard on a macbook pro just as an fyi.

[?] Someone point me into the theming direction

First off, I know there was a thread on this that was located somewhere in the HTC Dream/G1 section, but I can't seem to find that thread ever since the big change xda went through...
Anyways, I've been trying to learn how to theme, I'm a beginner, and I wanna do this for education purposes. Can someone point me in the right direction to began with? (like a guide or what-not)
Currently I have the SDK starter kit from Google/developer.android.com. Are there any other guides, or anyone here willing to teach?
im a beginner too but to make a theme is not so difficult.. you must have only patience and a good know of photoshop (or the gimp if you use linux)..
then, just take an apk only for an example.. mm.. Launcher.apk!! rename it to Launcher.apk.zip and u will see several directory, one of this is res..
extract to desktop and you will see all the launcher images..
the only thing you have to do is replace them with your own images (same dimension and format, png..)
once you done that.. reopen Launcher.apk.zip and replace this your new images with the old one and finally rename again to Launcher.apk
do this with every apks and framework-res.apk too cos here there are a lot of images of android like the battery icon or smileys (the one of the sms's) and much more, also the top bar..)
then, if u use metamorph just follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591329
or if you want use the update.zip you must first read this
how to sign .zip: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=473580
if u use metamorph u must only copy the file u want to replace..
else if u want the update.zip u must copy every file into apks, then sign..
if into the zip file you want to add both app and framework and font too.. you must add a directory called " com ".. u can find this directory in any theme you download, its in the " meta-inf" directory
ok??? its not so difficult trust in me..
i found this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467639 ..
...wrote in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=468254
maybe it can help you more..
Thank's that's exactly what I'm looking for, I owe you big time
but what about the notification bar?
u can find notification bar into framework-res.apk under the drawable and drawable-land folders..
the name of images are staus_background.png then bottombar.png and maybe another one.. anyway, thanks to cloverdale you must read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=606011
and download Black_Lite-v3.0.1 Full Theme.
here u can find the black notification bar (and many other thing..)
its a metamorph theme
I haven't tested it yet but it should work. make a nandroid backup before u apply this changes
alright, thanks for all the help, man
wow, great reply! so much for being a "beginner." i've been rooted and constantly looking around for new ways to mod my g1, and i still had NO clue how to theme or use metamorph. thanks!

im a beginner but i learn quickly.. i was in your same point some weeks ago..
if u want learn something about theming or else just follow the link i wrote before. i used them to improve my knowledge about themes..
if u still have trouble, download:
1. any themes u want
2. a theme that use metamorph (like Black_Lite-v3.0.1 Full Theme for example)
u will see the difference
to use metamorph is simply.. download it from the market and then copy the zip file or directory u want into the AndroidThemes folder on ur sdcard (u will see this folder after u install metamorph)..
next step will be open metamorph and select the one .thm file.. done
the only thing u hav to remember is make a nandroid backup cos if u dont like the new themes u can simply go back (without flash the rom again..)
all u hav to do guys is read more and do more practice

metamorph has not been working with my facebook, it acts like it does, then it's still not transparent, so what I've done is asked (and gotten) someone better with APK modifying to just upload a modded APK that I push to system/app which works, but I'm now on a pretty old version and can't find the newest one.
I'm on a CM7 2.3.5 ROM, you gotten any metamorph mods to work on the latest facebook?
hey orangekid.
my theme has a transparent widget (partly i guess with white on the bottom, dark on top.) anyways...my point is with cm7 is pretty easy. though you need to decompile apks to get the .9.pngs to work again - that may be what you are running into. if you just drage them and edit them and copy back to the apk things never worked for me.
to be honest, it seems from your questions of late, you need your own theme! can you compile/decompile?
(and btw, my latest version will be out later tonight...)

lol, so true! Because now I'm trying to get a version of your theme but with different icons for contacts and stuff.
I have not compiled/decompiled APKs before but if there's a decent tutorial out there I learn very fast, do you know of one? Can't be too hard.
I'd love to make my own theme instead of continuing to ask other devs to do it, lol.
*Before you try his theme (I know you will either way ), I've spent a few minutes trying to modify it. Try the apk attached and tell me what happens.
*Edit3:
*to have a fully working widget, just uninstall any previous version (even if you have the latest) of facebook and install the apk normally without pushing.

P.S. (you need to push the app to "data/app/" and not install it normally.
P.S. (Backup yours first, because you may not like it )
Edit:
I just tried it on my phone, it's true that the background has gone transparent but some side effects have arisen:
1- hitting the "What's on your mind?" Forces close Facebook, also hitting the share button does so too.
If you want the widget only to view status updates and go left and right, it is good for doing so. Otherwise try his theme (I know you already did )

to answer your other questions - if you install an edited apk, once it upgrades you will lose the edits. and will have to start over. which is fine, but just so you know. tis why i like cm7 and themechooser.
you asked for links, here they be. now, i am a complete novice at using terminals, etc. i learned from reading and asking questions and found a system that works for me.
two tools - apktool and apkmanager:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=640592
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701
a very easy way to install apktool:
http://www.miui-au.com/add-ons/apktool/
i used this set up. it works flawlessly.
the bible of CM7 theming:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964391
read the above. it is a must. really everything is laid out there.
my system (convoluted, but again i figured out a way and am sticking to it)
1- i decompile using apktool (cmd prompt --- apktool d ***.apk )
2- edit things. note: use photoshop for .9.pngs (only program that will work - paint.net, etc will not compile properly). or you can use 9editor with the sdk, but that thing is frickin' annoying
3- compile my theme (cmd prompt --- apktool b *** ) notice no ".apk"
4- then i move it to apkmanager and sign it
i guess you could do the above with apkmanager, but again, i figured out a system over days via trial and error and i am sticking to it.
now if you want to publish to the market, there is a bit more to do. let me know, and i guarantee if i figured it out (read: help from many people) anyone can.
cheers.

[TUTORIAL] Want to Theme?

Hey guys! Someone recently posted that they wanted to start to making their own themes and I posted a very long reply and figured, might as well post a "somewhat easy to understand" tutorial here for everyone.
So you want to make your own themes?
First off, it is important to know that if you plan on porting any themes over and releasing it to the masses, that you get permission from the theme owner first!!
DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR PHONE EXPLODES OR MELTS! lol
NOTE: IF YOU'RE A NOOB (you know if you are) DO NOT MESS WITH ANY IMAGE THAT ENDS IN ".9" UNTIL YOU READ UP ON THEM.......A LOT! IF YOU'RE JUST REPLACING AN IMAGE, THEN READ ON.
What you will need:
Apkmanager: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701
7zip: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
An empty flashable zip: http://www.multiupload.com/DBEMBUOCND
Lot's of time on your hands!
GETTING STARTED:
Apkmanager is going to be your "all-in-one" tool for making a theme in Windows.
(I'll go into all the options of apkmanager a little later)
The process you need to follow is actually kind of simple. It's just very time consuming.
First you will need to make the images that you want (unless you are porting a theme).
Now what you need to do is one way or another, get the framework-res.apk and the SystemUI.apk from your phone, you also need the RES_cappuccino.apk (found in /system/framework. (If you don't want to mess with using adb, use Root Explorer, just copy the apk then paste on your sdcard, then copy and paste from your sdcard onto your pc.)
Extract apkmanager to somewhere easy like the desktop and you should end up with a folder named "apkmanager" or whatever.
Inside that folder, you should have the following folders:
Other
place-apk-here-for-modding
place-apk-here-for-signing
place-apk-here-to-batch-optimize
place-ogg-here
projects
Then the following files:
log
Script
DO NOT MODIFY THE NAMES OF ANY OF THESE FILES OR FOLDERS OR NOTHING WILL WORK!
Take the 3 files that you got from your phone and place them in the "place apk here for modding" folder.
Double click to open the "Script" file
Press "22" and hit enter to set your current job
Select either 1,2 or 3 for whichever apk you want to start on first and hit enter
Select "1" to extract. You do not need to decompile unless you are editing XML files.
Once the extraction is done, go inside the "projects" folder and now you have a folder inside there with whatever the name is of the apk you just extracted.
Inside that folder are the images and XML files you need to replace (you might not have to edit any of the XML files, that's a little more advanced unless you already know how to.)
Most of the images you will need to edit will be in the following folders of each apk:
res>drawable
res>drawable-hdpi
Once you get everything done and you're ready to test it out, you need to go back to that "Script" file in apkmanager and open it back up. Now you're going to do pretty much the same stuff you did when you were extracting the apk, in order to rezip the apk.
In the Script for apkmanager, you're going to press "22" and hit enter, then select which file you want to compile first by either pressing 1, 2 or 3.
Select the file and hit enter, then press "3" and press enter
Now press "1" so that apkmanager knows it's a system file and will retain the files signature.
As long as you didn't mess anything up during the process of changing stuff, you shouldn't receive any errors. If you do, you need to figure out what it was you messed up on and fix it.
Go through and rezip all the apks that you edited. Once that is done, you will go to your "place apk here for modding" folder again and you will notice that you have 3 new files in there:
unsignedframework-res.apk
unsignedSystemUI.apk
unsignedRES_cappuccino.apk
Remember that empty flashable zip you downloaded earlier? Now you need it.
Right click on the flashable zip and mouse over "7zip" and click on "Open Archive"
Take the unsignedSystemUI.apk and place it in the "app" folder. Now rename that to its original name:
SystemUI.apk
Now take that unsignedframework-res.apk and unsignedRES_cappuccino.apk and place them in the "framework" folder of the flashable zip. Rename those to:
framework-res.apk
RES_cappuccino.apk
Now you can close out of the flashable zip file and place it on your sdcard.
Reboot into recovery, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik.
Now go back and flash the zip file you just put on your sdcard.
Since you wiped your cache and your dalvik, the reboot will take a little while. You should now be good to go!
NOTE: Since I did not create apkmanager, I will not be able to answer many questions about it but feel free to ask. If I don't have an answer for you, Just go back to the post above where you downloaded it, and post your question there.
Please enjoy and happy themeing!!!!!!
And to add. There is also another great way for beginners to start making themes. It's very simple, all you do is select the changes you want made, then upload the framework-res.apk and the SystemUI.apk and it does all the work for you!!!! Even puts everything into a flashable zip! All you have to do is download the zip file then flash it! Here's the link to the UOT Theme Kitchen:
http://uot.dakra.lt/kitchen/
Also, thanks to drt054 for pointing out that Apkmanager is being improved on and the name is changing to APK Multi-Tool. If you use this tool instead, I will not be able to help with any troubleshooting because I just recently started using it. You can download it here:
APK Multi-Tool: http://apkmultitool.com/
Great post!
Don't forget, UOT can be a great starting point for inspiration also, at least give a little jump start.
Also, the hardest part is also getting your paths set up for apk manager to read adb. Just Google it and the answers are easy to find!

Indy's comment to your post was exactly true. It really doesn't take that long once you get the hang of it. Making your own images is what takes longer than anything in my opinion. Even if it takes you a long time to push a theme out, just remember that "it's about quality, not quantity." As long as you put out an awesome looking theme, most people won't care how long it took or how long it takes to push out updates. It definitely wouldn't take long if you use the UOT Theme Kitchen. The link for that can be found at the bottom of my first post.

Hey Spc i have a question, how do you make your own images and such? do you have to use something like Photoshop or gimp or some other program? Been playing around with the uot kitchen and its really a great program, but eventually i'd like to do more custom made stuff too.
Thanks!

It was renamed from APK Manager is now APK Multi-Tool. Windows version is pretty nice. Been looking at the forum, make sure you install to the root of your sdk directory.
He is working on Linux Version but doesn't have a linux machine any longer to test so it is slow going but you can still download APK Manager 5.0 for linux

Might have figured out the issues with recompiling SystemUI and RES_Cappuccino they have to be decompiled with dependancies.. dragging frameworkres-apk into the command window and made changes and recompiled without errors. That is a first. If someone knew this and didn't tell me I will hurt somebody!!! Won't be able to test for a while..
Although you don't HAVE to do it, it's suggested that you do that with apkmanager too lol. Sorry!!!

Well, you can install new launchers by searching the market for them and installing them directly. Then you can set the new ones as the default as you see fit.
But I think what you're looking for is something like this website. There, you can just click together simple mods and build a ROM. I'm not sure if this will work for your phone, as I've only tried with a different model but it should jive with several Android models. Check out their XDA link to learn more.

try apk manager to decompile an apk you wish to mod.
navigate to the res/drawable-mdpi and mod the pictures of your wish.
if the file an .9.png so you have to hold the 1 px transparent border. this is very tricky with the *.9.png files.
after you mod at your wish compile your apk back with apk manager and sign it.
have fun
ok i have tried apk manager, autoapktool and apk tool bit non of them compiles the modded apk....i have java sdk and android sdk installed.....help guys plzz.....

Unpack the update ZIP of the ROM you want to mod to your likings and slap the APK of the launcher you want into /system/app - rename the standard one to <whatever>.apk.backup (just in case the ROM hates your launcher and keeps on force closing upon boot).

Decompile the /system/framework files and have a lot of fun in editing stuff in SMALI - it can be done, but it's definitely easier to edit the source and compile the ROM. Once you did your changes create the JARs and put them back into /system/framework.
ZIP up the ROM, flash it, hope for the best.
If you soft-bricked the phone with your mods make sure you have Flashtool and the Stock ROM FTF standing by.
Given the nature of your question I rather suggest you simply forget about your plan, because it doesn't sound like as if you know about the stuff - you already fail to post a question in the Q&A board.
ok hey i know c++ and i have basic knowledge of java....now can u help me....

You can't make a ROM without programming knowledge. You can't even make a simple app without programming knowledge. The least you could do is mod some drawables and stuff.

That's just a compiler with user interface. So what?
In my opinion, real programming is writing code yourself, not a GUI doing it for you without having any idea of what is going on (not talking about the compiler here).

Entering the world of ROMs

Hello,
I like to cook a ROM, but I have the knowledge necessary to do so. I'm told to make a ROM I have to have Linux. Do not you know you can do in Windows XP? Since it is the OS I use.
Is there a tutorial that you can leave me? Really appreciate it. If nothing happens in English, or English or Spanish.
Does anyone like me started? Asking and got that and then cook a ROM. I would like to cook a ROM because I have several days behind it.
Greetings!

Its easy to cook a ROM:
1.Download a ROM, any ROM.
2.Then prepare a pan for cooking.
3.Add some oil to the pan(not so much).
4.Put the ROM in the pan and wait three minutes.
5.Flip the ROM and wait other 2 minutes.
6.Serve the ROM with a salad and a dip like a theme.
7.Enjoy!!!!!

Welcome to the forums. It's always great to have someone trying to learn.
SO, to be clear there are two things about making custom rom. EIther you mod or edit somebody's else custom rom by changing themes, adding tweaks and scripts and changing apps. You can do this easily with teh help of android kitchen. Find more about it at http://yagyagaire.blogspot.com/search/label/Android Kitchen
And to make a rom with source you need more than just wish. You need to have knowledge of programming as well as you need to be able to use Linux to download (sync the repo) the source and then edit it. A lots of terminal commands to learn and source of 6+ GB to download and then edit the Java, Android xml and C source code to your preference then debug it and test and do many more. While you can also sync repo in windows using git bash Linux is recommended for compatibility and easiness. You can find instructions on syncing a repo and then building the rom at source.android.com
So, you have to decide which one you will take. First one is simple and second one takes a lot of research, knowledge and programming skills.
Good Luck! And have a nice time while at xda. I will be glad to help to the extent I can. You can find me on my site or at my facebook page in signature.

Thank you very much for all your comments.
In particular you yagya.
First of all I have no Linux, so I'm going to easy. I do not want a ROM from zero, apart from that I have the necessary knowledge.
For example, do a ROM-based CyanogenMod 7.2. But adding my stuff. What I need is to know how to add things.
Thank you very much yagya.

You could try WUBI, it'll install Ubuntu Linux on top of Windows without the need to repartition your drive, after installation you just reboot and you get to choose whether to start windows or ubuntu.
If you don't like it you can just uninstall it like you would any application in windows so it's easy enough to remove it if you don't like it.
For changing/adding to a ROM just go to the link yagya provided (http://yagyagaire.blogspot.com/search/label/Android Kitchen) all the information you need is right there.

In what way do you want to change it? If it's just icons/colour/transparency then check out http://uot.dakra.lt/kitchen/ you can do it online there with ready made icons from a variety of themes, it doesn't get much easier than that.
It can do a lot more if you want to fiddle with other settings but it's restricted to the stuff that they provide.

Thank you very much for your help, you are doing very well.
I'll explain more or less what I want, is a ROM IOS iPhone clone. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1533004
My question is, do I unzip the. Zip and I can grab from there the notification bar?
What I want is to have the iPhone interface, you will ask, Why do not you buy an iPhone? xD For this very expensive and is out of reach. At least by changing my Android interface I can have an illusion, it sounds stupid, but it would be the theme. xD
I ask a lot of patience with me, since I'm a bit slow to grab things, but I'm Spanish.
I hope you help me and you may be sympathetic with me.

First of all , thanx button is there
Btw i understand u cannot buy iphone evn i cannot its expensive for me
the rom link u gave is joyos then why dont u jst download it
or jst by changing notifi bar it cannot look like full iphone interface
U can use iphone launchers lockscreens (milocker etc) iconset
for notification bar u cannot transform it fully
All u neet is framework-res.apk frm joyos rom (system/framework-res.apk) and system ui.apk (system/app/systemui.apk)
Same both frm the rom u r using now
And decompile the both apk's with apk manager (google for downld link) now search for battery icons / signal icons etc in both apks of joyos rom and replace them with the rom apk's ..... remember the pic name shud be same (which would not be as both roms r different) u need to explore sm more by urself like searching for icons in apks in folder (drawable-ldpi)
Now finally after replacing icons compile the both apk with apk manager and use root explorer in ur sgm and replace both apks with original and change permissions and reboot phone
If u do all correctly (though this work is gonna little difficult) u can compile both apks successfully and they will run successfully
U need to explore more like searching for the dragger in status bar its pic in systemui etc
The whole interface would not be like iphone like settings menu will be same it cannot be edited so i recomment use any theme or original joyos rom
Best of luck hope i was clear
