new droids - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

are all currently sold droids from verizon in the us able to gain root I didnt see anything saying no or yes want to know before I pick one up

Short answer: yes, but it's slightly more of a hassle than it used to be
Long answer: Currently shipping Droids come with 2.1 preinstalled, so you can't root using the same method to root 2.0.1. The only way to root these devices is to use RSD Lite to either flash back to 2.0.1 or to flash a new recovery. With the former, you can just root using the same methods others had before; with the latter, you can just install a ROM that's already rooted. Flashing with RSD Lite can be dangerous, since it's the tool VZW and Motorola techs use to repair phones, and you actually can brick your phone if something goes wrong in the process.

I flashed directly from 2.1 OTA to 2.1 rooted using RSDlite, it worked very well.
Now using CyanogenMod w/ bekit 800LV 5-slot kernel, couldn't be happier.

root on 2.1 UK

There is a very good write up on how to root 2.1 by craigcrawfore, i know his same post is on droidforums.net and also modaco.
heres the link, worked for me, on my uk milestone with 2.1
http://android.modaco.com/content/m...m/308422/milestone-2-1-update-and-root-guide/
cheers for this craig, im sure ive seen you on xda before.
Does rooting voids warranty? A noob question though.
Kinda...legally, the dont have a leg to stand on if the fault isnt related to the root, but overclocking etc could result in hardware failier due to root. There should be an unrooting method or else get an official update package from moto (RUU sorta thing) if you wanna take take your device back
Thanks for the quick reply. My device is getting hotter even with underclocked 550MHz. As u said overclocking on this device had more chances of hardware failure. Ok if i find any package to unroot n get me back to stock, i will try rooting.
If I root my milestone and motorola releases FROYO update, am I be able to update to FROYO without any problem? or Do I need to come back to stock n then update?
I will load the 2.1 sbf file or the 2.0 or even 2.0.1 version. Then do the ota updates.
The unroot method would be download rsd lite and then load a sbf file.
Easy and under 5 mins! U will be completely factory reset at this stage.

Walking my brother through rooting, need some help going forward

I'm on the Evo now but my lil bro has a Hero and wants to root. I rooted my Hero back in February and I just don't remember what is necessary. From my RSS feeds I heard about the "universal androot apk" from http://software2tech.com/2010/08/29...6-2-beta-5released-and-available-for-download
So he did that and he rebooted phone, all is normal. I told him to download busybox to test and it says he's rooted but NAND is not unlocked (tells me its just a partial root). How can I get him to a full root?
Also, I should probably know this by now, but can he flash Fresh2.4 without NAND unlocked?
here ya go...
NO @ partial root... and...
from CyanogenMOD Wiki...
It has been verified that the HTC Hero CDMA can be rooted using the Universal Androot method. This seems to work reliably if your Hero is running 2.27.651.5; however some users have reported problems with later releases of the software (2.27.651.6 and 2.27.651.7). In these cases you may need to revert back to the original 2.27.651.5 from Sprint -- this is the initial release of the Android 2.1 software for the Hero.
If you need to downgrade your phone from the .6 or .7 variations use the following steps (reference: theunlockr):
Locate the original Android 2.1 software released by Sprint. A google search using the terms: "RUU" and "2.27.651.5" should lead you in the correct direction. Download this software to your desktop/laptop computer.
Download and install HTC Sync on your computer.
Connect your Hero Handset to your computer using a USB cable (make sure your handset is at least 75% charged).
Run the 2.27.651.5 RUU on your computer. It will flash and update your handset with the original Android 2.1.
The steps in the Universal Androot should now work.

you need to flash custom recovery easiest way to do that is d/l rom manager from the market and flash it using that. So while your phone is rooted you just don't have a custom recovery.
The partial root is odd since I had never heard it before until hitting up the Evo forum since most of us on the Heros were able to root are phone and flash a custom recovery in a couple of steps I think the Evo first rooting method only allowed rooting but didn't allow for a custom recovery to be added until about a month after it was out, you still see alot fo the rooting method where you have to root the evo and the unlock nand. So technically it is fully rooted but only partially unlocked ( when people wer say half root I was like theres only rooted and not no such thing as half)
Google SuperOneClick. It works per the latest .7 update. Really good, and really easy.

[Q] Can rooting and rom flashing be undone?

Been a long time iPhone user and have been really curious about Android. Then I came across a deal for a refurb SGHi987 for $199 and the time and price was right so I picked one up. I can jailbreak iOS with my eyes closed but am a complete noob when it comes to android.
A few questions.
1. What is the best tool to root?
2. Can rooting be undone in case I want to exercise my warranty?
3. Flashing custom ROM such as Overcome ROM v2.0.0 BETA 2, will I be able to revert back to AT&T's original firmware?
in my opinion, rooting can be undone if you backed up your tab before doing something screwy with it. not sure though if it would work. never tried it myself.
Superoneclick using the rageagainstthecage option has a root and unroot process that many reported success with on some na p1000 tabs.
It seems getting back to stock after flashing can be easy, complicated or impossible,
depends on if you have a proper backup of your original tab, the stock rom, etc.
Rotobackup would backup and recover basic flashes but I dont think he is making roto roms anymore. The newer roms and kernals seem more complex.
Im interested in reading replies here as well about clockwork etc.

Bought a used Nexus one (UNROOTED)

I just ended up purchasing a Nexus One from someone on craigslist and it turns out this phone has never been rooted. Was running GingerBread 2.3.4 OTA, I checked the mainversion it was 1.01.1700.1 (or something to that extent).
I downloaded a PASSIMG that had this mainversion, flashed it and now Im set all the way back to ERD79 (the original Nexus one Eclair).
I want to root this without unlocking the booloader, and keeping the MAIN VERSION intact. I am aware of the "Rageagainstthecage" method but I need FROYO. Is there a Froyo update that I can flash to this device (using UPDATE.zip) that wont screw around with the MAIN VERSION.
I think FRF91 is my best bet? Am I correct? Where can I find a trustable source for the FRF91 (or any other Froyo update). Note I am coming from ERD79 so it has to be able to take the update.
Once I get to FROYO (without touching the main version), I can take it from there with respect to the rooting and loading custom roms.
My original Nexus one is at 2.16.1700.1 which doesn't allow me to go all the way back to ERD79. The reason why I want to keep the main version untouched is so that I can easily load any PASSIMG.zip file.
Thanks for all the help/
c
anything at all, come one someone's gotta know?
I think if you can get Gingerbread on it ( older than 2.3.4 ) you can user Gingerbreak to root it without unlocking the bootloader:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
For pre-Gingerbread version I think you can user SuperOneClick:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
There is no reason to do it, that's why you are not getting many responses - there is a passimg file that works on any main ver, and that's all you need...

And if you bought the phone secondhand, the warranty is probably expired, and there is no reason to not unlock the bootloader.

[Q] Recovering from rom ics leak

Current phone information should be attached. Short form is, I'm using the Gummi 1.2.0 rom, put onto my phone after using safestrap (and following the instructions to make a backup before doing so). Safesystem is enabled.
Two backups: located on my external SD card
nonsafe-2012-05-26.07.52.54/
safe-2012-05-27.08.06.28/
Safestrap recovery v1.09 (afraid to update to 2.0 without breaking more stuff)
What I'm looking to do is return my phone to working stock, which I believe was Gingerbread 2.3.6. That said, every time I've touched this thing trying to go back, I've black screened it. I don't live in an area with 4g (screw the mountains, and their 1x service), so any attempts to connect to the 4g network for any part of the process will require me driving into Pennsylvania, 30 minutes away. I've heard before that you can't return from the ICS leak to the Stock for the Droid 4, for various reasons (but i believe the important one was it was a later firmware and it isn't a process designed to go backwards)
I'd like to know if thats still the case currently, or if something has changed. I'm getting shaky wifi/data/cell reception up here, and its flawless back on stock. Hell, I've got an old razor as an emergency phone that's flawless up here. Next time I'll do more research for this stuff I was a proud OG droid owner, and ran cyanogenmod on it before the vid card fried one evening. Thought the droid 4 would be a good deal, but I've had nothing but trouble with the roms on it.
All that said, I can simply smash and return this droid if its the only way to get a stock one back, but I don't like destroying useful and good technology when I can help it. Besides, I like fixing the problems I create.
Thanks for the help XDA, either way.

Did you flash the leak ICS from Motorola or did you use Safestrap and flash Gummy ICS?
If you flashed the leaked ICS, there is no going back. You will need to find get the files to flash the partial .219 system back so you can run the .206 leak update again.
If you just used safestrap to flash Gummy 1.2.0 then you can use the .219 flash files to completely re-do your phone.
Currently there are no ROMs to flash if you are on the leak, Hashcode just released his Safestrap 2.0 to do so but still nothing to flash. All the current ICS ROM builds are for the stock phone running the Gingerbread Kernel.
Sorry about the delay, was off camping. I rooted the phone first on gingerbread, then eventually installed safestrap and flashed the gummi rom. Can you (or someone else) walk me through the steps for flashing the .219 files and then flashing the .206 files?

You should probably go up to .208, that's the latest leak. Make sure to use rootkeeper, and follow all the instructions. So far I haven't lost root, but be aware I'm stuck on .206 because I don't want to lose root....

First of all, it sounds to me like you've just flashed a ROM, not flashed the leak. If that is the case, you can just toggle the safe mode in safestrap to get back to stock. Safestrap lets you toggle between stock and the ROM. It is pretty awesome because you can play with the ROM and then go back to stock whenever you need to.
If you HAVE flashed the Motorola leak (as opposed to just a ROM) you are SOL.
If you haven't flashed the Motorola leak and just want to get back to factory conditions, you'll have to flash via RSDLite. That info you should be able to find here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622256
Honestly I WOULD NOT flash the leak at this time. IMHO, it doesn't really offer enough to risk getting off the upgrade path forever, and losing the ability to flash back via RSDLite.
