Speech Quality with Headset/Car Stereo - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't really know how to explain...
I use my Nexus one in my car for calls.
I use a jack cable which is plugged into the radio. So I can hear my partner over the speaker in the car. Very good.
But, the others can't understand me. It's crappling all over.
When I put the cable out of the jack and use the normal hands free on the phone, everything is fine and the others understand me very well.
By plugging into the car radios jack, it starts with crappling my voice again.
Does anybody have the same problem? Or is it fine on your Nexus all the time?

sounds like the phone might be trying to find a microphone in the radio

Yes, could be. But why? What can I do?
It was very cool when somebody can try it, if it works on other NexusOne.

well the default headphones had a speaker in them so the jack is made to work as a speaker jack and a mic jack. however im not sure why it is expecting a mic when there is no information being sent back to the phone.

Simple expanation, I think - noise canceling functions.
When you're in speaker mode, it's settings are probably changed to account for a voice coming from a distance and being roughly equal for both mics, while when in regular mode it's working and expecting significant signal difference. When it doesn't get it - since you're speaking from a distance - it doesn't "think" you're talking, and cancels your voice partially as it would cancel outside noise.
There is a hack somewhere in General or Dev section, how to disable noise canceling. You might try.

OK, when I find it.... Sounds good

earphone out disables mic?

I use FM transmitter to listen to my music on Kaiser (using Y-splitter), but somehow on device mic gets disabled, and I can't make a phone call without plugging the cable out of Kaiser.
Is there configuration available that allows me to use car speaker as phone out, and still use on-deice mic?
If not, is there an alternative to plugging out the USB cable every time I get a call?
bump, anyone!?
Can't say I'm 100% sure, but yes, I beleive it does. The jack expects the connected headphones to be audio OUT and IN. like a headset, not just headphones. So, plugging anything into it will override the external mic as well since it expects what you connected a headset, including a mic.
Like I said, not 100% sure, but pretty sure thats the case.

I think you're right.... wondering if there's any way around it like having BT headsets??
did you ever find a registry edit or alternative to fix this. i have the same question

Is there a way to disable the loudspeaker whilst playing music?

There is one reason why I have never used my Kaiser as a music/media player - the lack of a headphone jack. I am now look at upgrading to a Rhodium, but again HTC fails to include the most basic of requirements. pfff
I know that I can get a headphone adaptor, or even use bluetooth, but the problem for me is that whenever the usb plug falls out, as it invariably does, or the bluetooth signal drops, I instantly upset everyone within 100m by blasting crappy tinny sounding music at them through the phone speaker. Of course, 3.5mm jacks don't have the same habit of just falling out.
Therefore, is there any way that I can set up the phone so that when music or media is playing (usually through Coreplayer) the phone speaker is disabled?
Thanks
Plug in headphones? Otherwise if your not using the speakerphone how would you hear anything?
I've used a 3.5mm to mini usb cable and adapter, they both worked fine. I liked the cable better since i worried less about it breaking in my pocket. Its not the exact same one i am using right now but this one is only a penny.
http://www.amazon.com/Stereo-Headset-Speaker-Adaptor-phones/dp/B0013URK04/ref=pd_cp_e_3
but therein lies the problem - because the headphone output is mini-usb, it is always at risk of falling out (far more so than a 3.5mm jack).
Yea life is tough that way. I've yet to have anything just fall out of my mini usb port myself.
I suppose you could write a script that detects if anything is plugged in to the usb port ala Audio Booster, and auto mute if nothing is detected. But i don't think i've seen an auto mute app or anything like that.
Here's a kind of work around. I found this doing a google search for Auto Mute for PPC. http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?soft=277
You could fire it up set it for an hour or so and listen away w/out fear, in theory at least.
that's a great idea - I'll give it a go. Thanks for taking the time.
Hope it works for ya! I can't get to the site and test it myself. I'm at work
Looks like the link is broken, but the idea is worth spending some time with google for
Damn.
This one says WinMo 5 ver 1.1, but i would think WinMo 6 is backward compatible. What about this one?

Problem with phone calls over car aux

I hate making new threads but I can't seem to find an answer. Maybe I'm using the wrong keywords.
I use my N1 in my car alot. It's my main source for my music and hand's free calling while driving. I use the aux jack on my stereo to the N1 for music.
When I get a call it would ring though the speakers and I would touch the slider to accept the call. The caller would hear me crystal clear and I would hear them though the speakers just fine.
Now when I get a call, they can't hear me. They say I sound like I'm far far away. I can hear them just fine. But I look like a madman in my car screaming and yelling just to be heard.
So what I have to do now, is answer the call, and touch speaker, which only plays the voice though the speaker phone. They hear me crystal clear but sound is no longer going to the car speakers.
Anybody have this problem or know what's causing it or even a push in the right direction?
I have this excact same problem.
I came from a milestone using a standard 3.5mm audio jack and calls went really well. But when i tried my nexus, i got the same response, "sounds liek your far away".
I tried a few AUX cables but they all seem to do the same thing. So my solution was a aux cable with a built in mic.
I ended up modding the headphones that came with my nexus to get this working. Removed the earbuds and soldered a 3.5mm jack.
Now when i talk using that cable with a built in mic, ppl hear me very clearly. So i've jsut been using that cable since. I'm sure you can buy a premade aux cable with a mic at any local mobile audio store. I saw one at a BestBuy mobile here.
Hope this helps.
but the issue is that at one point it DID work normal with his nexus. i think what is going on here is the phone originally read the aux input as just standard audio output. but now its reading it differently somehow, i just dont know why. its almost like the difference when a phone thinks you have headset connected vs audio out connected with no mic support. no idea on a solution though...

I was thinking on buying the Belkin one with the mic right at the aux jack.
Hope this helps.

Exactly, it DID work. I can't pin point when it happened for me. I was thinking maybe it was when I went from Eclair to Froyo?
I'm almost positive that using the phone over Aux out broken with the update to Froyo. Has anyone tried this yet with Gingerbread on the N1 or with an NS? I'm hoping they fixed this, it's a really, really frustrating problem.
My fear is that everyone at Google got free car docks so they won't ever fix it because it's never a problem for them.
I also have the exact same problem. Thought it never worked for me, I only recently sets up my car mount with aux. Anybody found a solution?

[Q] Any bluetooth settings/adjustments available?

I picked up a Vivid over the weekend and overall I'm thrilled. The only area that is lacking is BT quality when paired with my car stereo (Pioneer AVIC-Z110 updated to the Z130 firmware). Granted, these units have gotten bad reviews for their BT quality, HOWEVER, my old device worked well. I used to have an HTC "Pure" running Windows Mobile and got no complaints for call quality.
My wife now says that this phone is echoing really badly. I can't hear it on my end, all sounds well. When I disable BT and just call her directly from the handset, all is well.
Are there any tweaks or settings that can be changed in Android and on the Vivid specifically? I read about someone adjusting the "BT gain" before they paired their device, but I can't find such a setting.
Thanks,
-Brett.
+1 on this. My stereo has a Mic volume adjust that helps a little, but it seems to be bad when I'm on the highway. Though I've always had this problem with Android. my old windows 6.5 phones were just fine.
Another Solution
Instead of using BT for music from my phone, I just hit the Sirius/XM button on the sound system, or plug my iPod directly into the sound system. Of course, I had to buy a new vehicle to get this capability.
PS: The Vivid does work well via BT for hands-free phone calls, also built into the new vehicle.

I re-read my first post and realized I might not have been as clear as I could be. I'm speaking strictly about phone call quality, not BT audio streaming. I tried audio streaming once and it sounded OK, but that's not what I'm referring to here.
When talking on the phone using the Pioneer AVIC z110 as a BT headset the person that I'm calling reports a lot of echo on their end, to the point where it's almost unusable. Things sound mostly fine on my end.
So the question stands - are there any (hidden?) settings or adjustments that can be made on the Vivid, or in Android in general?
Thanks,
-Brett.
not to my knowledge, no adjustments. But if you're using your headset, have you used it on other phones without this problem? If there's an echo, it makes me think maybe the phone mic is active while it should be only the BT mic that is. Maybe try covering the phone mic with your thumb or something and ask the person on the other end if that does anything to take away the echo?
Yea I'm getting the same feedback about phone calls. Music quality is great except when I use navigation. My streak would lower music when it would speak instructions. My vivid doesn't.

I used the same BT setup on my old Windows Mobile phone with no complaints.
Maybe you're on to something. I had assumed that the phone would mute its internal microphone when connected to a BT device. Maybe that's not the case? I'll try covering the phone's mic and see if that makes a difference.
Thanks,
-Brett.
No luck. I tried both covering the Mic and taking the phone out of the car entirely. It made no difference in call quality.
Next step is to pair my wife's blackberry to the car and see if that works better. Need to determine if it's the phone or the car.

Sorry for being a smart-aleck. Actually, on a hand-free BT call last night I noticed a bit of an echo. I need to make some more calls to see if it continues. I never had that with the HD2 in 15 montrhs of use. Also, I noticed that the phone rings directly as well as through the car's sound system when I recieve a call. Again, I don't remember my HD2 doing that.
Minor update: I've found that it might be related to the Android Bluetooth in call volume setting. It seems like if I lower the volume during a call (via the volume rocker on the phone, not form the car's head unit) it helps with the echo problem. The problem is that this volume level resets itself to the max every time I pair with the car.
Is there any way to force Android to keep a lower volume level for the BT headset? I tried an app called Bluetooth Volume, but it didn't affect the BT Headset volume.
Thanks,
-Brett.

Google Home Mini - Connect to Bluetooth Speaker?

Hi,
Just got my "Google Home Mini".
Now I am curious if it is possible to connect it my bluetooth speakers to get better sound.
I have 2 Creative MUVO 2c paired for Stereo Sound.
Does somebody know if this is possible?
thx
Did you managed it that it work for you?

No you can not, so for now, My alexa dots are here to stay.
If my mini wasn't free, it would have gone back for sure. Having an AUX and/or Bluetooth to speaker capability seems like a must on the mini! Especially considering the terrible sound output on its built in speaker... I mean, that thing is bad lol. The voice is fine I suppose, but the sound is otherwise worse than I've heard in a LONG time on even a super cheap speaker. I really hope they add the Bluetooth function, and soon.
I am considering taking one apart and soldering on a aux cable to the speaker output and plug it into my home theater sound system, not sure whats inside or how it comes apart yet but they only cost $30, wort a shot...
There are several tear down posts now.
