Try this rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=644438

I'm not sure but I heard that Froyo doesn't like EXT partitions ...
Perhaps the kernel on the upper link should work. Give a try =)

i'm trying it now....let u kno how it works..and thanks for the suggestions

NO LUCK....DOESNT EVEN READ EXT PARTITION...I DUNNO what the hell KING is talking about

I have stock rooted froyo, and the apps that can be pushed to the sd card go to the fat32 part.
I have not tried using a2sd yet.
I will try pushing an app thru adb tonight to sd and see if it installs.
Update: I installed a couple of apps to the sdcard with ADB. One I don't use anymore, and one that I had installed from the market. I had to uninstall Google Earth, but I now have it installed on the sdcard and it is working just as well as if it were on the phone. Also tried Tower Raiders Free, and it also installed to the sdcard and plays with no problems. So I don't know if froyo needs the ext partition or not, but the newest ADB release does not in order for apps to work.

the benefit of EXT is space and i already have so many apps installed already from previous....the new method allows me only half and i would have to re-install all and for some reason...regular froyo doesnt sit well with my phone....like in 'manage application' it just says calculating...and i can never install certain apps

paul's (MoDaCo) r16 + have apps2sd on ext partition as an option.. i've been using it on ext4 since r16 dropped have about 75 apps including google earth and flash and have 135mb left on internal .. advanced task manager says 223mb with 20 apps running

did u have to activate the option? and how?

no .. its automatic... there are 2 ways... google (froyo) crappy apps2sd and our way of doing things.. just have your sd card fat32 /ext2/3/4 and thats it .. disregard the google froyo a2sd

You can try Darktremor A2SD and see if that works.
The rom you are on would need to have some form of a2sd launch command in the init.rc. In the old stuff, it would be a matter of putting the following lines in the init.rc:
1. Look for a line called class_start default. Add the next two lines above the class_start line:
start a2sd
on property:cm.filesystem.ready=1
2. Go to the end of the file and type the following:
service a2sd /system/bin/logwrapper /system/bin/sh /system/bin/a2sd
disabled
oneshot
Now, I'm not sure about Froyo and its Apps2SD...I'm not sure if you need to find the lines in init.rc (assuming they are actually in that file) and comment them out.
But try the program and see if it works.

Anyone tried the above post on froyo?
A link to step by step instructions will be appreciated.
Some steps here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Apps2SD but dont know what else is needed for froyo.
I want this because my /data partition is completely out of space, and no more apps can be moved using the froyo method.
Forcing all apps to install by default on the sd card is buggy at best.
update: works, see the below post, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6952103&postcount=16

Is SWAP partition still necessary ?

I've read that swap is not needed. Works without one for me

@britoso - i see you talk of this file - a2sd-2.7-update3-signed.zip - is that a rom?

just wanted to note that this works fine on Froyo FRF83 too.
I used Paul Obrien's FRF83 rooted, deodexed rom.
1)nandroid+ext
2)flash frf83
3)flash apps2sd
4)reboot
5)bootloop!
to fix it:
Code:
adb remount
adb shell mkdir /system/sd
adb shell
/system/bin/a2sd install
a2sd repair
a2sd check
6)success!
edit: it does not start automatically on reboot, flash leofroyo's boot.img in bootloader mode to fix it
fastboot flash boot leofroyoboot.img

[TIP] Running Dwang on Stock SPL? - If you have a problem loading themes...

If you are running Dwang on a Stock SPL and you are having problems installing a theme, I have some suggestions and ideas, some of these are very basic and common but ill repeat them anyway because youd be surprised at how many people dont follow these:
1) Make sure the theme you are using is compatible with the right version of Dwang that you are using. (keep in mind that v1.13-1.17.1 themes are interchangeable among those versions. ex: you can use a 1.13 theme on 1.17.1)
2) Make sure to ALWAYS have a Nandroid/BART backup, in case anything goes wrong.
3) Make sure youre using an EXT 3 file system.
4) Do NOT wipe BEFORE or AFTER flashing a theme. If you are using one theme and wish to switch to another theme, simply flash your base ROM over the old theme, then flash the new one.
5) Always have your apps backed up if you dont want to go looking for them again. I suggest ASTRO File Manager which can be downloaded from the Market for free.
Q. STUCK AT THE G1 SCREEN?
A. This happens sometimes if the theme is a little too large and you have Stock SPL....but what if you really want the theme and are afraid to upgrade your SPL because youre afraid of bricking your phone, or because youre one of the few people like me who are unable to upgrade to the latest radio? Theres a solution for that, I cant promise itll work for every single theme, but Ive tested it with Darkstar and DBeCe's black theme which gave me problems before I tried this method. I believe it will work for most themes on Dwang.
The solution is simple, try to free up space in your SYSTEM partition by moving your ringtones, sound effects, alarms, etc to your sdcard. This will free up around 2.66mb in the system partition. You can do this using Terminal Emulator.
type in
$su
mount -o remount,rw /system/dev/mtdblock3 /system
cp -r /system/media/audio /sdcard/
rm -R /system/media/audio
and you should see your audio folder in the root of your sdcard. You can add ringtones and sounds there too if you like, but the point is, now your SYSTEM has a little more space.
Restart your phone and boot into recovery and try to flash the theme again, and it should work now.
Q....OKAY SO I GOT PAST THE G1 SCREEN AND IT SHOWS THE ANDROID SPLASH SCREEN BUT AFTER A WHILE I GET A BLACK SCREEN!!!
A. If this happens to you, then you must format your EXT 3 partition. I suggest using the latest Amon_RA Recovery (v1.5.2 at the time of this post, MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE CORRECT RECOVERY FOR YOUR PHONE).
If youre still having problems, i suggest wiping everything including the phone, dalvik cache, battery and rotate settings (i like to wipe everything 3 times, but thats just me), reinstall dwang, login at the beginning, wait for the sync, and make sure to open up market and agree to the terms otherwise you might have problems with the market when you install a theme, (also keep in mind when u flash the rom again, you have to move the ringtones back to the sdcard again using the method i mentioned above), after you have done all that, reboot into recovery, flash the theme again, and it should be okay.
I hope Ive helped. Im still new to the scene but Ive found that this works for me and I just wanted to share, and I hope I helped and that your themes are working now.
If you have any suggestions or feedback, please feel free to share.
Thank You!
well done on a detailed and excellent advice. Keep it up
Great tutorial. I have the HardSPL and I am getting the same symtoms. All the themes that I have tried get to the theme splash and then stop. The longest I have allowed one to run is an hour. Do you think that space is still the issue? I am going to try these steps as they cannot hurt, but I thought that I was good with the HardSPL.

the hard spl has the same partition spacing as the stock spl, it is the 1.33.2005 spl that provides more space to system.
tryed it..
Tried this method and only got darkstar to work for a min then force close when I tried to login to my google account and wouldn't stop force closing....U got any other methods that might work.

Thanks everybody, if you have any other suggestions, ill add them to the first post.
darkstar 0.6.7 is kinda complicated... you said google login so im guessing you wiped before u flashed? normally you shouldnt do that but for this theme i had to, ill explainin the next paragraph, but first of all, did you try to skip the initial sign in and then try to login by clicking on gmail or checking sync settings? i had a similar problem with another theme, and thats how i solved it. let me know if that works.
this is why darkstar 0.6.7 is a little different and more challenging to install compared to most themes (at least for me):
darkstar 0.6.5 flashed fine with me, when i had dwang 1.15 but when i upgraded dwang 1.17.1 and used darkstar 0.6.7, it gave me a little trouble and i had to get a little creative in order to install it properly because for some reason the market app was pushed to ext and it was no longer available after i wiped the ext before, and i kept getting a black screen if i didnt wipe the ext system. so what i did was wipe everything flash the stock rom, backup the market app using astro file manager (some reccomend backup for root users, i havent tried it yet), flashed the theme got a black screen, wiped the ext3, then i reflashed the theme again and i got it working but i was missing market, and i couldnt download astro without market.....unless i went to google using the browser and i looked up astro 2.2.3 apk and i downloaded the app directly to my phone, and restored market. however the market will start force closing even after you run fix_permissions so i went against the rule of wiping after a flash, and i decided to wipe the phone....lo and behold its been running flawlessly ever since, but it took a lot of work, idk why it gave me such a hard time this time, but i managed to get it working. try the first method first and let me know how that goes.

Tom
there are a few things that could be removed from the /system partition of dwang's rom.
rm /system/app/GenieWidget.apk
rm /system/app/Maps.apk (since the updates are installed on the /data partition)
rm /system/app/BugReport.apk (its not in cyan's roms anymore)
cp /system/app/Mail.apk /data/app/
rm /system/app/Mail.apk
(cyan did it in his latest release)
(maybe? haven't tested this one)
rm /system/app/LatinImeTutorial.apk
There are probably some more "useless" .apk's that could be removed.

thank you so much for confirming my suspicions. i knew there was more useless stuff in the apps folder but i wasnt sure how to test it all. ill try this method out later tonight and try to flash a large theme and see what happens, ill add this info to the first post tonight!
sorry im late guys ive been pretty busy. i stumbled upon this page on cyanogenmods wiki

it shows which files can be deleted safely out of /system and /dev. im gonna try removing a lot of those apks from my dwang rom and i wanna find a huge theme to flash thats supposed to be used only with danger spl, anyone have any suggestions? i think this might work. btw does anyone know if its possible to make a script to make removing multiple apks easier?

Modaco Custom Rom 1.1 Core- app2SD help!

Hi i have a sprint htc hero that i have rooted successfully with the Modaco Custom ROM 1.1 Core but now i need help finding a apps2sd download that will work w/ this ROM and is for my phone..... I've read a few posts on people that have somewhat done this already but i honestly don't understand what they are talking about when they refer to the terminal? how do you even reach that on this phone? I have a 2GB memory card w/ like 978MB open all i need is the download and how to install it in simple terms i learned a little with the linux OS but wasnt the best with cmds! does it matter what OS your comp has? ive got Umbuntu 9.1 and Windows XP. Can anyone plz help me i dont want to have risked rooting my phone for nothing! and Thanks in advance!
You have to partition your sdcard then apps2sd is automatic when phone is loading
ok great wat do you suggest with the amount of memory i have left i should partition it? do i need to back up my memory first wipe it then partition it and add it all back? thanks again!
I have my ext2 partition set to 500mb and its always best to back everything up to be safe
ok sorry i must be stupid! Im in my recovery n i hit the option to part sd fat32+ext2+swap but it never gave me option to set anything... wat am i doin wrong?
That's ok it sets it all up for you I'm thinking it sets it to a 500mb ext partition
ok ok so basically when i reboot next time i download an app from the market itll automatically save to my SD? cuz i dont see that option either im not sure it worked! thanks again for all your help.
Yup that's the way it works
you can check to see if apps2sd is working by setting it up, download an app, and then get into adb and cd to system/sd/data and then ls and you should see the app listed in that spot
Ok I'm not exactly sure what adb is...... but I've downloaded an app looked in my astro file manager went to system/sd/ then I couldn't go any further is that an app for my phone or my computer.
Adb is for your computer. It allows you too manipulate the phone from a command prompt (like Linux terminal).

Disable A2sd from source (ROM zip file)

Hello XDA team
First of all, I think that this is the appropiate forum for this question, but if it doesn´t, please feel free to move to the correct thread.
I have a spanish Vodafone HTC Magic (32B) and after several combinations I have found that the most suitable partition system for my SD card is Fat32 + 128 MG of Swap. I really hate a2sd and Ext partitions because my device doesn´t really need them, and it only mess my apps.
I´m searching a way to disable a2sd from the .zip files of ROMs in order to be able to install in my phone, but I´m not sure hot to made it
If I take, for example, MightyMax latest ROM (MghtyMax1.9.1) and extract the contents, I find "a2sd" under /system/bin, so, if I remove this app and zip again the ROM, will I be able to "Skip" this feature? should I edite the user.conf and or userinit.sh files?
Many thanks for your help
Rgds
If its a question it goes to Q&A no matter what type of question it is. Just an FYI ^_^
u can try it. I dont know if it will work or not. Just remove all traces of a2sd and resign the update.zip. The other thing is, u can just not have an ext2 partition. That will disable a2sd from the first boot...

The problem is that ROMs that require a2sd won´t boot (tried MLGIN, MightyMax, Sense Hero..) with my partition layout, they all keeps in the boot screen
thats because u they want ur layout to be like this
fat32,ext2,swap
the only thing u can do is
fat32,ext2,swap
then remove ext2 leaving a gap. After that, expand your fat32 to cover over the ext2.
so ur new layout would be fat32,swap but the swap partition would be on the third partition... (i think )
You could try using the script included in Wes Garner's update here to disable A2SD (should be able to replace the script in the update file of the ROM you are using).

Your SD card has three partitions right? And, why remove the a2sd bin file? I would use the modified script I linked you to, make a very small ext2 partition - so you can put your user.conf & userinit.sh files on it, and see what that does.
What is the logcat (or ddms) output during boot up?

Help: Firefox for android stuck in memory

Tried firefox for android beta2 today and it freezed my phone, so I uninstall it only to realise that it locked 13MB of my internal memory permanently probably due to bad uninstall. Tried to reinstall it so that I can uninstall it again but it didn't allow me to install again saying that I don't have enough memory (though i still have ~45 MB free internal memory).
Anyone knows where does firefox install to? I couldn't find it in any of the app directory (not in data\app or system\app, nothing in dalvik cache and data\data as well). having 14MB memory locked is really a paint considering how small our milestone memory is.
Please help.
Thanks

1.Do you have a recent nandroid backup? that would be a simple fix?
2. What rom and kernel are you using?
3. Is your phone rooted? Probably yes...All the apps go to /system/app, unless you have apps2sd installed
4. If it's not there and it's not in "manage applications" then probably it's a an error of your rom showing erroneous available space.
Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
1) I am using XT720, we don't have nandroid backup tools yet
2) Stock EU rom and kernel for XT720
3) yes, rooted. I am sure it's not in /system/app (mine has got apps2sd)
4) I guess I'll probably need to reflash the rom to get rid of it then. a bit troublesome but no choice I guess.
Something about the firefox is that if you install it you'll find that the space taken up by the firefox is much bigger than the .apk+dalvik cache+data in the normal app installation path. some portion gets installed into somewhere else which nobody knows where. My friend with a Nexus one try to move it to sd but it simply won't move the whole thing because part of it does not install to the /app.
Anyway, thanks for the help. I'll wait another day or two before I flash it to stock again.
Many thanks

Can you go into recovery? ADB commands actually work as root there.
You also said you have app2sd - I'm guessing the ext version. You can browse around the ext partition if you have something that can read it (like Ubuntu) and delete it from the card as well.
- Look into your /cache partition and delete every download*.apk
- Look into /data/app and look if there is still an apk left
- Look into /data/data and see if a Firefox-folder is located there - delete it!
You can do all this with RootExplorer
Then you should be fixed
Milestone isn't supported. I think I read it somewhere on the mozilla site. There's some known issue logged somewhere
Sent from my Milestone using XDA App
Check if there is any "*.tmp" files under /data/app ?
I was locked some memory due to unsuccessful install of "Pocket Legends", and found out that the apks were stored in both "/cache/downloadfile.apk" and "/data/app/vmxyzxyz.tmp".

[Q] COS-DS - can't install home applications

So, after having installed the last few iterations of COS-DS (April 21st through May 1st) I cannot seem to get ADW EX installed or any other custom home application. It always ends with that the application cannot be installed. Yoshi RC6 and 7 haven't had this same issue and honestly I've never encountered it before. I've tried fix permissions, wiping caches, switching install location.
I also notice in the thread someone makes brief mention to this, but is replied to by Roalex as being fixed in the latest rom. (which at the time was April 26th)
Any Help?

I would think that is happenning becuz u have the default install location in sd-ext, so try installing it in the sysytem memory
As I noted, changing install location doesn't work. In fact, I don't use Sd-Ext and don't have the partition on my sdcard

Try doin a fresh install, wipe everything and reflash the rom.
EDIT: Before u do that. There is a known bug that still installs apps in the phone memory even though you set the ext partition as the default install location, so they wont install, they will only install if they are installed in the sd card. Are you sure you have an Fat32 partition and ext4 partition on your sd card?
did u click allow moving(COSsettings/Application)?
As I noted, I've tried reflashing the rom (I've done it multiple times for for each of the older and newer versions of the rom that I specified). Furthermore, I stated I don't ever do SD-EXT, the partition simply does not exist for my card. I find it buggy and nasty and quite frankly I should never need it if I have a responsible amount of apps for my phone.
One of the requirements for the rom is to have a ext 4 partition.
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App
number of reasons an app can't install
COS sets market d/l cache to /data/download
this could be the problem
when an app installs it looks at free space on data, and then takes away 10% of the total size
so assuming you don;t use custom MTD you have total data size around 90mb
adw is about 1mb (just over)
so 9 + 1 + 1 = 11
we add adw size twice because cos d/l the temp file to data
do you have enough space on data?
it could be something else
I use ADW Ex , and it was fine with COS
BUT I installed without wiping data
(later I deleted /sd-ext/data and /sd-ext/system to start fresh I use Firerat's ddb )
either way ADW Ex ran fine
how are you installing?
a logcat of what happens during install would be nice
I made a todo list
logcat is on it
I want to write a one stop guide to bring everyone up to speed on tools like adb, logcat, fastboot and compiling maybe throw in a totally basic Linux vm to do it all (some license issues with that , so don't hold me to it)
short version
adb logcat > alogcat.txt
