Ya, i tried same. I pretty much already knew it wasnt going to work but gave it a shot as well. Just have to wait for someone to hack it up for our screen res and we should be good to go. I am just taking a shot in the dark and thinking that is the only reason why it wont work and could be wrong.

Mine installed just fine. I just cant get the keyboard to pull up

The Eris is mdpi where as the Droid is hdpi its a resolution thing...even if you got it to load the keys would be to big for your screen much like when the HTCIME first came out and everyone was jumping on the hi res version...

someone may port it...they're several pngs that have to be resized and edited etc porting any apk and or making a theme is a time intensive task so maybe if a themer or a dev feels like jumping on it...it may happen... if you want to tackle it yourself get you a trial copy of winRAR or another file reader and open a mdpi and the hdpi files and compare the res/drawables....thats a place to start I think.

It also has the resolution for each key specified in the decompiled .smali files inside classes.dex, so I think it's a big job to convert it. It's definitely beyond my ability. You'd need to use a tool like APK Manager 4.4 (search XDA for it) or manually decompile it with baksmali.
EDIT: I was wrong, the resolution in the .smali files is relative, so that's not stopping it from working.

I wonder if this would work with punk.kaos new froyo build?

Nope it wants to replace the latinime app thats why it wont install

Some Hero folks got it working as-is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=710522#post6949662
It sounds like it only works with Vanilla-based ROMs since they have LatinIME in them (Android keyboard), and you have to push it to /system/app/LatinIME.apk (overwriting the Android keyboard) instead of installing it as a user app.

Most likely you can use Root Explorer or a similar app to move it into /system/app while the phone is on, then make sure you check its permissions (should be rw-r--r--), and then reboot for the change to take effect. Again, I haven't gotten this to work for me, but I'm on a Sense-based ROM. The successes reported were on Heros with their "darchdroid" ROM.

I have an idea for getting this to work with Sense, and I'm testing my theory right now. My theory is that we're missing its dependencies (in /system/lib), so I'm going to just flash the "Android Keyboard for Sense" from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5874235#post5874235
And then flash the new Droid X keyboard on top of that. Maybe that'll work.
UPDATE: YES! It works! Hang on, I'll post an update.zip to take care of installing it...

Can you post the flashable droid x keyboard for those on froyo or vanilla roms

It should already work on Vanilla ROMs. Just install the APK on the first page of this thread. The pre-requisite is that you have to have the Android stock keyboard (com.google.inputmethod.latin) installed, which you do.
The tricky part is a Sense ROM, because it doesn't have the Android keyboard.
Attached is a flashable ZIP to install the Droid X Multi-Touch Keyboard onto a Sense-based ROM (or any ROM without the Android stock keyboard).
Credit to itmustbejj for original keyboard.

so I got it to install but I just get it force closing every three seconds

I think the .jar edits would cause it to bootloop, but I'll have a look and see.
But only for vanilla roms, nothing with sense
This theme work with CyanogenMod v1.0 ROM?
Is the file corrupt?
Ive downloaded it and attempted to extract the files to view exactly whats been changed but it wont extract correctly?
are this really for htc hero? after i install & reboot but the btm scrolling icon was not there.
It may well be solely for the VanillainROM, which is in my sig.
It depends exactly what's been changed and where.
Good to see someone theming my roms anyway

I have been working on this for a bit, but this is just the Full on flashable zip, made for the Droid. I got three kids and not alot of time to resize every image to mdpi. plus this is coming from the a droid theme, so I'm not sure what to do with the drawable-nodpi images and other if any nopi images. anyway, i'm just asking for help, not for "I can't help you" or "Alot of work" answers. I know it's alot of work as i have driving myself crazy on how to do it. Thanks.
I tried using the theme porter to save time but it will not recognize 9.pngs and I'm pretty sure that's why it's not porting.

I have converted the hdpi to mdpi now I think. before I used the theme porter, but it kept saying system file cannot be specified. well i got the pngs converted and the folders renamed, but I don't have a hero to test it on. I use my wife's when she's here. Don't know if this will work or not.
I also need to know if the images in the framework-res are the only thing I need to change, and then I can flash that same package that was meant for the droid or if I need to transfer those over to the Hero's framework-res?

I almost positive you cant just rename folders like drawable-hdpi to draw-mdpi as theres more in the apk that specifies that the apk is built for an hdpi phone.
This is how I do it (short version cause I'm working out kinks). basically just copy over the pngs from the hdpi folders to the mdpi folders. Basically the difference in size from hdpi to mdpi is about 66% the size of an hdpi png so in the process of copying them I also shrink them. 9 patch pngs are a alot harder to get right and I currently working through some ways to port those now, but for a basic port you can just leave them as is. If you wanted to fix the 9 patch you basically have to decompile the apk and then use the 9patchDrawable tool in the android sdk and gimp to shrink them and then redraw the patch borders.
Your problem is most likely trying to rename the file folder. The port should only bring over the pngs and maybe ( i never do) some minor xml tweaks and put those in the rom your porting to you can't use anything from the ported rom except the pngs unless you want a buncha headaches.

regular install won't work because of a library that google keyboards are depending on. The only way to get this to work is to copy it to your system/app folder. (Of course you need a full root to do that)

what (also) might work is
a) to install the froyo keyboard the usual way, and
b) to copy the library file libjni_latinime.so (a native c library file that will generate suggestions from a dictionary - faster than a java procedure) to the /system/lib dir. (Attached the library file to this post)
(The FC with the regular installation is caused by the fact that the keyboard can't load the library file. It looks for a native procedure but can't find it)
EDIT: if the attached library file doesn't work, you can also try the one that comes with the apk package (rename x.apk to x.zip and unzip it. In the lib directory you will find the library)

Gingerbread Keyboard for rooted DX

http://bit.ly/hNlgaZ
1. Use Droid X Bootsrapper to boot into Clockwork Recovery
2. Navigate to mounts and storage
3. Mount /system
4. Back out to main menu and select install zip from sdcard
5. Select choose zip from sdcard
6. Navigate to GingerBreadLatinIME.zip and select it to install
7. After install completes, return to main menu and reboot phone
Tested and works great on my DX running 2.3.320 and Fission 2.3
Is this one any different from the updated release on droid-life?
the one on droid life was uber small.. any fix for that? also is there a single .zip with the dictionary and kb?
The one on Droid Life has been fixed. I am using mine on Fission 2.3 and all features work.
I'm sure I've missed the answer to this somewhere but, is this keyboard multi-touch?
There's one in rom manager under fabulous's rom section with a full dictionary and working auto-correction.
Okay since I'm still a newbie I have a question.
I'm on Rubix and didn't like that the motorola multi-touch keyboard wasn't on there.
Instead there's the Android keyboard. I installed the apk of the multi-touch from
punk.kaos here and I deleted the LatinIME from the system/lib folder to replace it with
the libnji that came with his apk zip.
Now I've gone through the bootstrap method as described in the OP but the GB
keyboard isn't installing and instead I'm getting the FC on the multi-touch. My question
is this, do I have to replace the libjni again with the one that comes in this zip?
Works well. Enjoying it..
The keyboard is multitouch. I'll edit this post once I've tried it ton rubix 1.9
edit: works just fine :]
Using the GB keyboard to type this. It seems a little small... installed the one in ROM manager.

Mine is comming in really small. Changing the LCD density fixes it, but I really have no interest in doing that permanently. any fix?
Is there a difference in the one in rom manager and the one from droid-life? or are they the same

In your case you need to put LatinIME.apk back on you phone like it was before all the changes you mentioned above. Then you can install the Gingerbread Keyboard once that is done.
The reason for all your troubles is cause the Gingerbread Keyboard installs over and replaces both the Droid X Multi-touch Keyboard and if installed the 2.2 Android Keyboard. Hope this helps and post back with any questions.
