G-Sensor needs calibration?! - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys...
when I started Layar the first time I recognized a slightly sloping horizon (when putting the phone into landscape mode, the horizon is about 0,5cm higher on the left than on the right side of the display).
After trying some "spirit level"-tool I also saw some offset.
Anyone else having similar issues or does anyone know how to calibrate the sensor?
Thanks in advance!
quicky

I have exactly the same problem with my phone. No idea how to calibrate the sensor :s

I'm using the shipped firmware JF3. Maybe someone with the newer version could check if it's fixed.
I also checked the "Sensor"-menu in the secret menu with *#0*#. Under "MAGNETIC Sensor" it has a PITCH of 4,0 and a ROLL of 3,0 which both should be "0" I guess.

Think you need to wave the phone in an "8" to calibrate it.
Edit: http: //www.iphonelife.com/sites/iphonelife.com/files/u2440/compass8.jpg This link shows the process for an iphone, it's the same for every other magnetic sensor

same here---how to solve it?

Waving a figure "8" does not have an impact on the tilt here, still an offset from 3-4 at PITCH and ROLL level :-(
Could anyone else try the system-menu to see if there are other values displayed?

Waving "8" can not solve this problems...
It is said that the g-sensor actually has a calibrating tool, "sensorcalibutil_yamaha"
It is under /system/bin/, you can see that with root explore.
I tried to run this service with adb, but Permission Denied......
hope someone can solve it...
There are many i9000 user meeting this g-sensor problem.(Y +24 degree)
This is really a bit problem.

Calibration tool working perfectly, just calibrated myself.
But you need to have your phone rooted. Then just do this:
Code:
adb shell
su
/system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha
then place your phone horizontally and still (remember that back of the phone is not flat - so do something so screen is horizontal), and press enter.
then restart phone and thats it!

Can't we just use the bubble applications?

thanks went in the terminal emulator right on the phone and ran the program and rebooted.. now pitch and roll are perfect in compass (which i use to test) so it did calibrate sucessfully.. b4 i had the same issue where they were both slightly off.. maybe the factory floor is not level in korea?

Awesome!!!
Thanks alot... still waiting for Samsung's feedback (I opened a ticket at their helpdesk ;-)
Cheers!

Worked for me too. thank you! no problems

Mine says failed and my phone is rooted.
any ideas as to why?
thanks

This works a treat. Thank you so much for sharing.

after typing /system i get an "error permission denied" in the following line
Edit: fixed it by leaving screen on and allowing root access

You forgot to SU first.

Thanks man! That's exactly what I needed. This error was pissing me of...

I used it and it was okay but when I use layar the net is still not flat! How can I fix it?

Did you reboot your phone after calibrating? Won't work without rebooting.

"W" letter

hey ive been having this problem for the past couple days and was wondering if anyone has experianced the same thing or could shed abit of light on it.
basically whenever writing a text, or word document or typing a web address, etc and i click on the letter "w" nothing comes up and the phone crashes, doesnt let me type anything, goes super super slow and doesnt really respond to nething so i have to reset it. this happens when using the "w" on the on screen keyboard and on the pull out keyboard.
i havnt dropped it recently and its in perfect condition, also havnt installed anything recently that may hav caused it. it just seemed to randomly start happening. will have to try a hard reset if theres no other solution, but any ideas would be greatly appreciated?
I would suggest a hard reset. If it is a software error that should do the trick.
But i guess this has something to do with hardware. I had that problem with my wizard. The commanager button caused the device to crash. Once I opened it I found about 1 kg of dust sitting behind the button. Once that was out of the way the device was normal again.
edit: Just try opening the device as a last resort.
here you can find the service manual. Link removed - no longer valid
thanks mate, may try a hard reset then. but i'll leave it till weekend after exams have finished as its quite time consuming installing everything again, etc.
i perhaps should have mentioned that it only crashes if "w" is the first letter i use. if i type something else an then use it, it seems to work. (altho i havnt tested this properly, i'll assume this is usually the case). just seems like a very strange problem to get
anywayz, thank you for ur advice

I have almost the same problem with my "w" key also. I have to press it longer than i do other keys to get it to type a "w" and when i do it causes a slow down on my phone.

Accelerometer stuck

I've had my Diamond for a couple of weeks and the accelerometer has worked normally until now. But now it seems to have stuck - in Teeter, the ball is fixed in the upper left corner and will not move, and apps like Opera and the photo viewer does not react to rotating the phone anymore. I've used the cool Sushi Profile Switcher v.0.2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406769) and have
shaken the phone a lot. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Is it possible that I've physically broken the g-sensor? - I've hard-reset the phone but it didn't help.
Thanks in advance for any answers
Jon
Use the Bubble level program which visualizes the angle of your phone. It offers the ability to calibrate the phone. Maybe it helps.
You can find the program here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=408056&highlight=bubble+level
Maybe there is a reason that HTC didn't build in a profile shaker... that would be something :|

That's not true. it only calibrates it in the app itself. As soon as you leave the app, your gsensor has the same calibration as before.
Thanks for the suggestion - I installed the BubbleLevel program, and allthough it didn't solve the problem, but I think it does give a hint that it might just (hopefully) be a matter of calibration. The green blob doesn't move at all, but the degree number in the top changes from 71,5 when the phone is flat on the table to 90 in vertical position, so movements are still registered.
Could it be that one of the axis the sensors measure is broken?
Come to think of it...: Even though it isn't calibrated, it should work no matter what. If it's calibrated wrong the axis still should register movement in any direction. The only thing wrong would be the read-out compared to the horizon.
I'm affraid that something is physically wrong with the device
Does the 'shake app' still work, or isn't it? Maybe there is a difference in sensing shocks (g's) and the angle sensors.
Probably there is another app, but I wouldn't know one other at the moment: The light sabre applet has a 'debug' feature from which you can see if G's are measured along the axis. Should give an indication too...

I don’t want to sound condescending, but do you know what a hard reset is?
It's not simply removing and replacing your battery!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2332732&postcount=1
I do not understand what is the problem .. to play whit the diamond you keep diamond to the hand and not on the table no?? also tends in my hand a little, but I have no problem playing ...
Ric
the problem is, that a broken G-Sensor does not even allow you to play Teeter. When you open opera, it stays in landscape mode as the device "thinks" it's turned sideways

I know, unfortunately I did hard reset the way described in the guide, but the sensor is still not working.
I've also made a simple little test-application using the g-sensor api described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2381034
Running this on my Diamond shows that movement on the x-axis is not registered at all, movement on the y-axis only shows very small changes, while movement on the z-axis seems to be registered fine. I guess this suggests that the g-sensor is actually broken

Hi Bäcker
So did your sensor also work for a while until appearently broken? And did you by any chance also 'shake' your unit quite a lot before it happened?
it worked fine, now it does work, but its drasticly registering negative X axis data
So teeter can't be used and it flips opera/album on it's own
i did not shake it but a relative's kid (5yrs) dropped it on the carpet - which might be the reason
Just get it replaced under warranty
Me too
I have exactly the same issue.
I dropped the phone once - on a soft surface, no scratches or external damange but...
Teeter Game - ball only rolls on one axis, otherwise stuck at top of scree.
No Rotation in Opera or Camera
Camera, after taking photos and then viewing them in the viewer the are presented upside down and can not be rotated.
I've done a hard reset twice with no resolution.
Contacted HTC. they said that since it's past the 30 since order date the best they can do is have me send the phone in for repair - no replacement.
My main concern now is that since this seems to be a problem others are having too from similar 'small knocks' is it even worth sending back for repair. At this rate all owners will soon be facing the same issue.

Is that why my teeter ball changes its habits depending on how I calibrate the sensor? Oh okay.
Download the calibration tool stripped from the Raphael.

No key responce of keyboard and frontpanel or wrong responce

Hi all,
Since a couple of weeks my X1 has the following problem.
- Key on the front do not work
-- Backlight lits up but no responce from key or wrong responce (starts dailing last number)
- keyboard no responce
-- keys lid up but no correct responce
-phone starts dailing last dailed nr automatically (phone laying on table and not touching it, it still dailes the last nr at random times)
-restarting no help.
-soft restart no help
-battery removed and wait >4 days... problem solved but returns after 3 days (give or take)
Had windows 6.1 installed at first when the problem started.
Now I have 6.5 SEX1 version installed but same problem occurred.
anybody ideas?? or even recognize the issue? could not find a simmilar issue
kind regards
Wally
Sounds like you have hardware issues. Still got yer warranty? If so, reflash orignal everything and send it back because its obviously more than a firmware problem
Hmm... sounds bad..... I have no Warrenty anymore.... does this mean my phone will slowly but surely turn into an nice brick.....
any ideas how to fix this... except buying a new one....
You could try disassembling the whole unit, and cleaning all of your contacts and ensuring that all of your connections inside are secure.
No guarantees it will help, but if you are at the point of giving it up for lost then it couldn't hurt.
Cleaned my phone today... took it appart to the last screw, cleaned it..... unfortunately no help.
Responds to the 1st button, then no responce to the following...
Well, if it's only the buttons, you could use an application like AE Button Plus to disable them alltogether. Then you can just only only the screen itself to control the phone.
Thanks for the suggestion, but that is not what I am looking for .... (yet)
I hope there is a way to fix this, hopefully somebody had the same issue and was able to solve the issue.... if not... I can always use that program then.

I've been lurking these forums for a while and I have never had, or seen reports of the problem you describe. I'm assuming you tried the search function (google) as well. If that turns up empty too, you're out of options.
Had a very similar problem when my phone got slightly wet, dropped from ear under tap when washing my hands. Problem didnt show for a few days so didnt think it was the water, but in case it was I heat soaked it by leaving it behind glass on a sunny day while charging. It got very hot but after a few treatments it was cured and has been ok for a year.
It realy was unuseable as the keyboard and all buttons were giving totaly false random responces.
Worth a try.
Yes I searched on Google as well... no help unfortunately.
Although I took my phone appart, and cleaned it so it should be dry.
I can always put in in the oven and heat is up to .. lets say 55 degr.C and leave it for an hour to bake..... need frosting on that afterwards....
tell you more tomorrow
just tried my luck using the oven.... no help.
I am out of ideas....
think I will try that buttonprogram afterall....
thanks for helping

[Q] Galaxy S Display Rotated Upside Down. Need Assistance :(

Hi everyone...
I've been having problems with my Galaxy S since yesterday. After upgrading to XXJPM my display is rotated 180 degrees (completely upside down). Strangely enough, the touch interface seems to be working just fine.
For example, the "Phone" icon is supposed to be on the bottom-left of the screen. It is now displayed on the top-right corner (again, upside down) but in order to activate it I still have to touch the bottom-left corner right on the icon's original position.
The display is also rotated 180 degrees if I enter recovery or download mode, but the volume up-down buttons still function as is. There are times when the display will appear normal for a few seconds before rotating itself 180 degrees again.
I followed the installation steps to the letter, did everything properly, I even searched just in case other users had similar issues, but I still haven't found a fix yet (really sorry if I missed similar threads). I also tried calibrating the g-sensor, but that didn't solve the problem.
Auto-rotate works perfectly, but the screen is still upside down no matter which way I rotate the handset. The same goes for when auto-rotate is off.
Any thought will be highly appreciated. I'm also willing to make a small donation if necessary. I'm desperate for a solution

I did, but that didn't solve the problem. I think it has something to do with the bootloader since during startup the screen would show the normal Galaxy S logo correctly for about one second and then the display is rotated. Even the download/recovery interface is flipped.
The Good and the bad
Good news first: you are not the only one have this problem.
I have same problem after updated Nordic v. Froyo.
Bad one is I haven't got a clue how to sole the problem.
Let't belive ours has special talent which can jump twice more that ordinary ones.
try reflashing with one of the roms that has a bootloader included. search around not all do.. i know the jh2 for i9000m has bootloader..

Tried this, didn't work too. I also tried Tayutama Edition rom, actually it helps a bit. After finishing the sdcard scanning routine the screen would work just fine for quite a while before going straight back to being rotated. It is also still upside down during the entire boot process.
Found another interesting discovery. Still using Tayutama firmware, if I switch the Power-Saving Mode from Display settings off and on, the display will be reverted back to normal.
I wonder what's causing this issue in the first place...
Tried another fresh rom, still no improvement...
I attached a picture showing how the screen is upside down even in download mode. Notice how the USB port and the download mode triangle just don't match.
Any further advice would be highly appreciated

Mine did work few hours after down load Froyo.
Then problem began.
Have you tried factory reset then calibration?

Thanks! I had also problems with auto rotation, did even factory reset but did not start to work until made calibration you mentioned.
I've tried virtually anything to get the display fixed, including doing a complete rom backup of a healthy Galaxy S, and the display is still rotated. I think it really is a bootloader problem.
I took it to Samsung service center here in Bali. They said they can fix it, but they won't because I got the device in UK and I need to take it to a service center in the UK to get it fixed. Crazy...
A quick Note
==========
Just to make it clear, for any future reference, display rotation if shown when it is powered off and charging and also while booting, this is most probably a hardware issue, this can ONLy be achieved by replacing the LCD (or doing a hardware repair of the LCD) it has nothing to do with sensors or software.
Thanks.

Help with touch related problem

Hi guys,
My Xperia ZR started behaving abnormally some days back, I put "screentouchtest" app and found that there were random inputs on the phone which made the phone go useless... Check the screen shot attached.
So I tried to make an app that will disable only that part on my screen and I was successful at it... Check screenshot attached. I could then at least use my phone to some extent.
But now the frequency of these random touch inputs have increased and that has made it again go unusable...
Problem is that I made this app as a floating app and whenever user touches other part of the phone , touch below the unblocked area is activated.
SO now I wanted to disable the touch completely over this area...any help will be appreciated.
Sony says it is due to water logging in the motherboard and no warranty will be given.
You are not alone!
Having the same problem here. Random touch inputs on the top right corner of device. I can assure you it's not because of water log of any sorts because i have opened ,checked, dried and even tested the touch display. Its a software related issue I guess which I am not able to pinpoint or understand. I wish someone from the forum helps with it.

Sorry to say unfortunately custom ROM doesn't help either. After I installed one just to see if the problem persists, To my surprise it didn't! But after a week or so the pendulum was back to square one. So I had to roll back. I really don't know how to go about this problem I think the problem is because of a bug of some sorts which causes the chip to send signals to the display addressing that its being touched or whatever. Anyway this is just my guess. You can try installing a custom ROM for your device and see if the issue ceases. In that case my problem would be just device specific. Do share your results after you install a custom ROM :good:.

May be there is a problem with the touch digitizer under the LCD panel which is misbehaving. No software can fix it. You will need to replace the touch digitizer along with LCD screen as they are sold as single unit. Check online if you can find the parts and ask any local mobile repairer to replace it. :good:
NO Luck with Custom ROM
I put Android Lollipop (CM12 Port) and there have been no change. Looks like the problem is with digitizer, last time I told local repair shop to replace the screen they said they cant separate the screen and had no clue. But I searched and found out from youtube videos that it can be done. Now all I have to do is buy Screen+Digitizer.
As you can see the random touch strip have moved little upwards from my earlier screenshots. That happened months back. If anyone wants the app I made then let me know. It helps me to some extent.

Since there are random touches on my phone, I made app that blocks this touch... Check the screenshots, I have "Show Touches" Option ON from Developer Settings. This makes all the touches show white marker... So I made app that floats over the screen and wont show any response when there are touches over that area. "Semi Transparent Area" in the screenshot - Touch wont work over that part. App wont completely disable the touch though, if we press other part of screen for that time app gets disabled...

sorry guys for late reply!
I am attaching the apk here...
I have this problem too but it only happens if the phone screen get wet
Some time it happen randomly but when i press on the screen at bottom and on led gently it disappear and back to normal
Thank you!
The Float APK solved the major issue of my faulty touch screen in my Nexus 4. There are two lines in my screen where the touch is not working anymore. One of them is having several crazy clicks making my phone somehow useless. By using this app, I can prevent that, which is great!
Two issues I've got:
- the textbox to set the distance from the top is located exactly in the first dead line! So I need to turn my phone sideways to be edit to click there and edit its value.
- when using the phone in horizontal mode, blocked zone turns as well, but the faulty zone is fixed there.
I'm wondering if you might share with us the source code or maybe you consider to make some improvements on it?
Thank you so much for sharing this app here!
thanks for this app solution.
I too have problem of ghost touches. This app definately helps with that and makes the phone somewhat usable again.
The only problem is that some ghost touches are continous (it's like someone presses their finger on the screen and keeps holding it there). This makes action by other touches unresponsive.
Maybe we can find a solution for this in the float app?
Source code for the app
