Using American Nexus One in Germany - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I live on a US Military base in Germany, and know that the only carrier of the Nexus One here is Vodafone, and without a contract it costs €489,99, which is like $610, a lot more than the $529 you pay in America. But since I can get free/cheaper shipping to my APO address, I am wondering if I can buy a $529 Nexus One from a carrier in America like AT&T and just use my own sim card in it. Thanks.

The $529 Nexus One you get in the US would come directly from Google, not from a carrier. Both variants of the phone will get you 3G on all carriers in Germany and most in the majority of Europe since they both have UMTS 2100. If you have any preference for which carrier to use it on when you're back in the US, you could make a decision based on that.

tl; dr; -> Yes.

so, basically, yes, I can get the $529 one from Google and use it in Europe, using the SIM card I already have?

Correct. It's better to do that as you don't have to wait for Voda to **** about with the firmware.

Yes, and as cmstlist said, the decision of T-Mo vs ATnT would mainly depend on your preference of carrier back in the US, if at all.

AFAIK, Voda does not "**** about" with firmwares. Google rolls updates. Google has voluntarily decided to delay the European updates, to customise the stuff I guess.

Well. Vodafone wants to charge for tethering, so I guess they need some "add ons".

I thought the whole point of Nexus One was to make updates carrier-independent. Even now, the N1 sold by Vodafone is not branded anywhere right?

Well maybe it's not Voda dicking about, but for no apparent reason, someone somewhere is.
My US TMo handset needed exactly nothing doing to it to run refectly on Vodafone UK, yet apparently 2.2 (which of course runs fine) needs changes to work. Hmmmm.

There's no "need" for changes, emergency calls and APNs are the official reason. But that's a load since everything works fine on Kang-o-rama for me.
Translated source on heise.de

My handset originally came with EPF21B. The changes are not in the way the phone or the hardware works, they are cosmetic changes which are Europe-specific. For example the spellings, the date format etc. Customising those is probably what's causing the delay.

T-MO USA version has the frequencies you are looking for to use it in Europe.

Well mine has the correct UK spellings, correct date and time format. Probably something to do with setting the language to English (UK) more than any customistion being done.

No, it's not. It's about adding an accounting technique for the sharing of mobile internet. The locale didn't change and things like voice search or turn by turn navigation are added in application updates.
There's no reason to delay the OTA other than adding provider crap ware.

N1 in Europe
I'm in the Navy stationed in Greece and I bought my N1 in Jan. before moving here. I use a local sim with a 3G data plan and have no issues. The only thing is You won't be able to purchase apps unless you have an American sim. It's annoying to have to switch sims to update paid apps but that is the only problem I ran into. If you bought one on a plan from T Mobile the you'll be responsible for that bill. I would go the unlocked route or see if there are any for sale used.

You can use MarketAccess to install/update the protected apps without changing sims - http://amip.tools-for.net/wiki/android/marketaccess

So, do you have to pay a lot for internet access while you are buying apps using your American sim?

Or can you not use Wi-fi to download apps?

Yes, you can use WiFi but afaik you still need that US SIM card inserted.

I'm so sorry this has to be my first post..

Hey XDA - I've been a browser forever, but I just signed up;
because I am in diiiiiiiiire need of some help.
I'm really sorry this has to be my first thread.
I promise I'm not a troll, and I promise I'll contribute as
much as I possibly can!
I have a situation I am in -
I currently have a Nexus One, on T-Mobile U.S.
It's completely stock, no hacks or roots, mods or anything.
To make a long story short - I'll be switching phones and providers soon (Evo), but I would like to give this phone to my girlfriend, who happens to live in the United Kingdom. She's on the O2 network, and has all the data/plan stuff covered already, I just need to get the phone working for her when she pops in her SIM card.
From what I've gathered, it seems like the Nexus One WILL work on O2 with both 2G and 3G speeds, if this is true; can someone verify?
"O2 use 2100MHz for 3G and 900/1800MHz for GSM (2G - Voice/GPRS).
The Nexus One supports these frequencies for both services."
Also, I've never unlocked, or rooted a phone before. This phone would NEED to be unlocked for her to be able to use it, right? Is it possible to unlock a phone without rooting it? I really am new to all of this. She's not a power user, so I'd like her to keep the stock build and get all the updates. Is that possible? To unlock the phone and keep everything stocked?
Can someone maybe help with that? Or should I just follow one of those guides to "unlock and flash the rom" guides that I've found all over the internet? I really want to just keep everything stock for her, with the exception of the phone being unlocked.
Whatever happens, will the Android market still be working for her?
Does anyone know how Google Maps would work on the phone for her, in the UK?
I'm basically in love with the girl, and we're trying to do everything we can to make the best of a long distance relationship. The main reason I want her to have an android phone (mine) is for her to be able to use Fring with me, and Google Chat - so I'd really hope those apps worked in the UK.
Any help on unlocking this bad boy is much appreciated.
Thank you XDA,
You guys are awesome - and I have all the respect in the world for you.
Hey Dude,
my US Nexus is working fine on O2 here in germany and there are no problems with 3G and 2G, so no worries. And afaik no Nexus One is sim-locked.
Hope this helps.

That actually does help a lot - but,
did you purchase the unlocked Nexus from Google?
I can't confirm, but I've heard that both are different,
the T-Mobile version being sim locked.
I also have the APN settings from O2 U.K already
- I'm aware of that part.
Hi, I am on o2 in the uk and the nexus works Just fine (2g & 3g). Also, I thought the nexus wasn't sim locked, I certainly never had to unlock mine.

Was yours purchased unlocked though?
Thank you
Europe uses the same bands in every country. Its a direction from the European Union so every phone bought in Europe will work in every country in Europe.
Coincidentally, T-MO US uses the same bands so you won't have any trouble with it. I have the T-MO US version here in Romania and works fine on 2G and 3G.
I don't think its sim locked. You should put an att sim in it, although you're only gonna get 2G. But that will show you if its sim locked or not.
I am pretty sure that although Google were selling the Nexus with a T-Mobile option there are no sim- or netlocked Nexus Ones - simply for the fact that Google did not want that. That is also how Vodafone handles the Nexus distribution here in germany: There is an option for a bundle with a contract and the Nexus you get with it is not sim- or netlocked.
Also, to answer another question of you: Yes, your gf will be able to use all functions (market, maps, etc.) without any rooting-action necessary.

That was a genius suggestion.
Popped in a co-workers ATT sim, and it worked
just fine with absolutely zero issues. Thank you!
AHHH I am so relieved. DDDDDDDDDDDDDD!
Siggi : Thank you also for that bit of information, you guys really just took a huge weight off my chest.
1. It will be fully functional on the provider you specified.
2. There is no such thing as SIM-locked Nexus.
3. It's fun using Fring video to show people places.
just for our your clarification: EVERY NEXUS ONE SOLD IS UNLOCKED, and, IT WILL WORK IN THE UK.
Settled.

Exactly.
I also got a Nexus One from Google US and it's working without any problems in germany.
Just remember, even though your Nexus One is unlocked, if you are on contract with T-Mobile and you cancel early, you will have to pay an ETF.

God Damn Vodafone!!!!!!! why!!

So much for everyone recieving the full froyo update!
as usuall vodafone balls everything up for all us users. It makes no sense unless they are removing features as the explanation around emergency calling doesnt fit, in that case users using a nexus one roaming on vodafone wouldnt be able to emergency call.
Nexus One customers that bought the phone from Vodafone will be getting Froyo, albeit a little delayed. We have to make a few changes to Froyo to optimize it for the Vodafone network (small stuff around Emergency calling, etc.), so it will take at least another couple of weeks (changes + testing).
Apologize for the extra delay, but please understand that this is a large scale deployment with lots of intricacies and we have to be prudent. I can assure you that we are striving hard to get Froyo out to all Nexus One customers ASAP.
Thanks for your continued support!

now how do i unlock my bootloader.
What if I bought my N1 directly from Google
I wish they would be more verbose about the actual issue.. surely anyone who has bought their phone direct from Google should be having certain issues with Froyo in Europe then?
So is that all EPF21B handsets? I didn't get mine from Vodafone, I bought it from Phones 4 U and put it on a voda iPhone tarriff. AFAIK I could've put it on any network.
I guess it's registered on the vodafone network now...

all EPF21B handsets are assigned to vodafone, some phone shops might sell you it as another network, but they were meant to be vodafone only.
So yes unfortunatly all EPF21B phones have to wait for whatever crap google are doing to it, and given the amount of time they are saying it is gonna take i doubt it will be just minor changes like they say.

Definitely couldn't have put it on any network. Phone are supplied from the networks not phone shops.
Think they need to 'optimize' out the tethering ability?
I stand corrected (said the man in the orthopedic shoes). Cheers for the info guys.
So all this talk of all the updates for the N1 coming direct from Google with no interruptions from the networks was all pie in the sky?

Being an unlocked phone you can use any networks sim in it but it would still have vodafone customized firmware. Doesn't make it O2s phone by using O2 sim in it.
You said it couldn't be used on any network, I was saying this is incorrect. Am not saying sticking in a sim from another operator magically changes the firmware.

Have you tried flashing the new FroYo at all or are you worried about voiding warranty?
I thought there was a version which would update all firmware versions?
I wanted to stick it on one of the guys at works' phones but he didn't want to. He's on a VF contract with the phone coming from VF.
I bought mine sim free from Google and stuck my contract sim in and rooted within a month. Never looked back to be honest.
You should consider it and if something goes wrong, just go straight to HTC or claim on your own insurance (home or phone specific).
I wouldn't hang around waiting for VF to sort it out, they'll probably bastardise the firmware anyway and lock out stuff.
Damn, some of you people are dense.
Vodafone is not requiring google to do anything.
Google is opting to modify their update for the vodafone range in order to IMPROVE their(vodafone gang's) experience.

Surely any worth while improvements would be in Froyo to benefit everyone, I can't see Vodafone running something that is unique to their network otherwise every single phone they release would need specific software to them.
Also isn't there other networks in Europe supplying the N1 that isn't Vodafone but use the same build? I do fear this is more about removal of tethering, as there is people on here running Froyo just fine on Vodafone's network.
Maybe there's hope for tether after all
Hey guys, I have an AT&T nexus1 now running frf85b on Vodafone in East Africa. Tether doesn't work already because of a DNS problem. I am pretty sure it's not a phone or computer problem, but some discrepancy between Voda and Froyo. Perhaps Voda is getting that worked out in their network before releasing frf85b. Or a different froyo build is on it's way, but either way, this seems like there may be hope for tether. If they didn't want you to have tether they could give it to you broke now.
Thats bull****...
Not everyone in europe uses Vodafone. I bought it from a retailer.
Since VF is the only provider with the n1 they also got it from VF.
Most people arent even using VF as their provider. Why should we need VF-specific ROM versions?
Vodafone forums are reporting another 2-3 weeks, which is why I unlocked the bootloader & am now running FRF85B.
Ha! up yours Vodamoan, I'm using an O2 sim anyways! LOL!
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2010/jun/29/android-froyo-google-update
there you go.
This update is not going to include any unique features for vodafone, neither is it going to include any improvements over the froyo which is already released. think about it why would google give a better version to voda rather than its own customers. neither is this update because of emergency calling like google claims, as to pass fcc rules the phone must be capable of creating emergency calls anywhere where there is reception, wether that be a us phone in the uk or vice versa it makes no difference.
this could be google making some changes to optomize it for vodafones network, but then the question is why dont other networks need optomized versions?
voda has made it clear in many sources it isnt happy about tethering on android or other phones as they fear it will cripple their network like att in america. so is it just coincidence that they have asked google to make changes? highly unlikely, more likely is google is either removing or limiting tethering on the vodafone version.
Quite how this will stop people tethering when they can just switch firmwares is beyond me.
Just a shame vodafone and to some way google (by agreeing to change it for vodafone) are going completely against the openness of android. Infact google themselves stated a few weeks back that they werent happy about the fragmentation of android, yet they themselves are fragmenting it for the benefit of a network.

[Q] HD7 for AT&T/Telus

I bought my HD2 from Telstra to use on AT&T. When I received it I couldn't get it to work on AT&T with the factory ROM and had to HSPL/Reflash it. What are the thought on the HD7 from Telstra working with an AT&T sim on the AT&T network? I would really hate to go back to a smaller screen and honestly the surround seems a bit kitchy.
You probably will have to have it sim unlocked. Thats easier than flashing a rom, but with WP7 I don't know.
i want to do the same thing i need an HD7 on at&t
i am on the same page
I am using a telstra hd2 on us att 3g, i switch between wm 6.5.x and android 2.2 desire rom, i've been using android a lot more lately, because i got tired of squeezing functionality out of winmo when its already there with android (tired of second rate facebook, foursquare apps etc ), alas i really want WP7 to succeed and will be there to support it, but i do not want to downgrade to a smaller device to stay on at&t, I have a cheap unlimited data plan (at&t thinks im using a
little nokia phone for data), the A list where i use my google voice for calls and have accrued over 3,000 roll over minutes,so it looks like ill be forking over $800 bucks again for a telstra hd7 if that's the case, i imagine though when i sell my unlocked hd2 running on att 3g network with dual operating systems i may get a decent penny on ebay to contribute towards the telstra hd7 purchase
and also has anyone else using this phone have found little support for those running android on it or anything else? sometimes i feel like im the only guy in the united states with a telstra hd2 and everyone else is using the tmo usa one, all the forums talk about the euro hd2 and the tmo usa one
im in the same boat, but with Bell in canada..i use the Telstra HD2 and from the looks of things were just getting the LG with the keyboard and a 3.5in screen..looks awful. im hoping the same with the HD7, just a matter of whether they can be sim unlocked. ill be keeping my eye on it and hoping for the best anyway.
Is it telstra even getting the hd7?
Seems like Telstra will be getting the HD7 exclusively in 2011 similar to what happened with the HD2.
Launch availability will be T-Mobile(US) O2(England/Germany) and SingTel(Singapore) none of which support UMTS/HSDPA 850.
Strange because according to these guys the HD7 will be coming to Telstra in November: http://smarthouse.com.au/Phones/Mobile/X6L9N4K3
And for those of us that bought the Telstra HD2 we may recall the device came factory unlocked. Great for me as I'm using it on Telus in Toronto, Canada.
I looked at our launch line up here as well and our choices are pretty weak. I've read someone confirmed the Dell Venue Pro will work for us on the North American bands. That's my second choice.
But I think the HD7 from Telstra will be good to go. Except we'll be stuck with a Telstra Hub until someone figures out how to flash new roms lol..

front facing camera?
is it possible to find someone who can install a front facing camera as well? I would pay who ever could do it, it can be done with the samsung vibrant, it is really disappointing there is no ffc installed
and now im worried once i import the hd7 from telstra will there be roms that i can use to remove the telstra hub and skins? I doubt a hard reset will remove this, we are all venturing into new ground here indeed
there are no skins, and the carrier apps can be uninstalled

According to this article "Unfortunately the elusive HTC HD7 is not available at launch. It’s officially slated to be available exclusively through Telstra next year in 2011. You would be wise to bet the first half of the year."
I honestly believe it will be worth the wait.
Were you able to use your Telstra HD2 on AT&T straight out of the box? I ask this because I could not. It was indeed sim unlocked, but didn't work for me. Granted I only tested it once and then HSPL/Flash to NRG.

Odd that on the same day 2 different stories would be printed. One saying it's available next month, the other saying next year. Guess we'll know for sure by November if it doesn't actually arrive.
For me personally it worked on the Telus network right out of the box, even before I HSPL'd it. The only hassle was setting up the data and mms manually. But later I found a few custom roms that did that for me.

Anyone have a time machine?
The UK carrier O2 is also adding the HD7 to their line up for Oct. and has quad band GSM:

Actually flashing a ROM won't work. You can't unlock the SIM by flashing another ROM, you have to get the unlock code regardless.
Most carriers do it for free or you can find a site online that will do it for a charge.
The OS does not effect SIM UNLOCKING so I do not see any change with WP7

i9300 3g question

Hello,
I have just purchased an unlocked international version of the Galaxy s3 from newegg.ca
I'm not allowed to post the link to the product as I am a new member.
Before I bought it I noticed that it will work on Rogers (in Canada, where I am from) so I went ahead and ordered it. I went back to the site a few days later and noticed that in the details it says that this phone will only work on the AT&T 3g network. In Canada we don't use AT&T so basically I am stuck with a smart phone that I can't connect to a data network with. A useless phone. I can send it back and get a refund so it's really not a big problem. I am wondering however, if there is a way that I can get the phone to work on a rogers network? Is there anything I can do, or do I just have to send it back? Thanks.

I can send it back and get a refund so it's really not a big problem. I am wondering however, if there is a way that I can get the phone to work on a rogers network? Is there anything I can do, or do I just have to send it back? Thanks.

So i am unsure about your carrier networks over there, but usually when a phone is locked to a carrier here in Australia, you really just need to pay an unlocking fee to use the other networks. Sure there might be some difference between their networks, but overall you should be able to get a working phone, maybe just not on the fastest mobile infrastructure.

Hey thanks. It is already unlocked. But for some reason, which I don't understand, the 3g will only work with AT&T networks. I'm sure there is a way to fix it if it's rooted or something like that but I just don't know how.
strange, according to wikipedia both AT&T and Rogers use 850/1900MHz for their 3G, so if you buy a phone for the AT&T network, the 3G should work fine on Rogers..

yeah I wish I could post the link to the product. I even called the company and they said it would be AT&T only. I guess this is why noobs should just stick to carriers and contracts.. I can't sign a contract because I may be headed overseas (hence the international version of the phone) but I am just not knowledgeable enough to navigate this situation without risk, I suppose

[Q] 64GB unlocked developers HTC One. I have questions..

Hi all,
I'm about 90% sure that I'm going to buy the 64gb dev. HTC One. I'm still on Sprint but I think I'm done with them as they have seriously lost my confidence.
I don't have any experience with an unlocked phone that require a sim card and I'm kind of intimidated by that but I want to learn and see what kind of experience I have with an unlocked phone. I don't know how the whole sim card thing works and how it relates to Tmobile or At&t services, radio frequencies, 4glte, hspa+ etc.
I'm thinking of buying 2. One (no pun intended) for me and one for the wife. I guess my question is how do I make the transition from Sprint to Tmobile as quickly as and painless as possible. How do i explain an unlocked phone to my wife who also never been on another carrier other than sprint? What plan should I consider on Tmobile and or At&t. Which carrier's network is faster (I'm in Central NJ).
I understand the dev version has an unlocked bootloader. Does this mean it comes installed with a recovery and is it s-off / s-on?
I'm not a geek but I know how to flash roms/ kernels...basic sh*t you know.
If anyone can school me on what to expect form an unlocked phone and what I can do with it would be great. Will I be able to use sim cards from both tmobile and at&t on this phone?
Any help would be appreciated...
IIRC the Dev unit does not work on Sprint so you'd need to switch regardless.
You'll just have to get a new account and have them port the numbers over but you just won't be buying a phone on contract.
Most think it will have S-ON, but bootloader unlocked. This just means you can load ROMs, but they are locked to the kernel from HTC (not just any kernel which would be nice if you had S-OFF).
Yes, you can use a SIM from ATT and T-MO but remember that with T-MO unless you live in a new LTE zone or a refarmed 1900mhz HSPA+ band, you will be stuck with 2G speed.

The SIM cards will be given to you by T-MO or ATT when you sign up.

no problem, glad I could help
just go to T-MO or ATT store and tell them you have your own phone and simply want x-plan (whatever it is you're looking for)
obviously T-MO is nice for pre-paid, no contract, but unless you live in a new 1900mhz zone (or LTE) and the phone could possibly be flashed with t-mo's firmware (possibly opening up 1700) then stick with ATT

I just checked the refarmed 1900mhz map and I'm real close to i guess two towers. There's a **** load of them a few miles from me, but none at my address. Do you think I'll be able to pick up on that 1900mhz signal?

By they way, I just purchased 2 HTC One's. One for me and one for the wife! However, there on back order until they get there next shipment which they say is on the 24th of April. I'll keep you posted.

How close? If you're decently close to two towers you should be fine. To port your number from Sprint you will need to check four things,
1: Your account number. (Dial *2 for Sprint customer service from your Sprint phone for that)
2: Your account pin. (6-10 numbers)
3: If you have any time left on your Sprint contract. Keep in mind you most likely signed a 24 month contract, but upgrades roll around every 20 months. So even if you're elegible for upgrade there may still a early term fee from Sprint.
4 Basic information such as the main account holders name, billing address, etc.
Keep in mind that at the moment the 32 and 64gb versions are out of stock from HTC (for now) If you start up a new account on T-Mobile with unlocked devices you will be on what's called Month to Month pricing. This means that since you provided your own equipment, you will be able to cancel at any time with no termination fee. You will also have upgrades avalible from the get go since you didn't purchase subsidised equipment from them.
Good luck!

Wow, this is great information. From what I can see on the coverage maps the coverage is excellent. I just purchased 2 HTC One phones. However, as you said there out of stock and I'm on back order. I talked to representative and they said there next shipment of phones are not coming until the 24th of this month. Also. are the dev phones gsm phones as well?

Fantastic! Yes, the Developer Edition is factory unlocked GSM There are two types of phone radios CDMA (Verizon, Sprint, Boost, etc) And GSM (At&t, T-Mobile, and basically every other international carrier) A locked phone is basically a phone configured to only accept a certain carriers network baseband. Unlocked is, well.. Unlocked!

I'm so amped, can't wait!!!
Ok, the boot loader is unlocked but will i be able to achieve s-off on this bad boy. I have a EVO 4G LTE rooted s-off phone now but how does that work with unlocked phones? Also, you mentioned updates. Will they come straight from Google like they do on the nexus phone?

I don't think anyone has been able to get s-off this early, and if so it'd require access to a PC to use fastboot commands. Once more developers get their hands on one, it'll (hopefully) be a somewhat painless process. As far as updates go it will most likely be in the same boat as the carrier versions. One more reason having the a rooted dev version would be the bomb.com.
