Anyone else uninstall flash? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I really enjoy the froyo update and all, but I was a little disappointed by the slow speed of web browsing (and basically the phone itself, though not sure if related)... I uninstalled flash, and the phone is lightning fast now.. browsing, Froyo interface, everythng... its ridiculous how much flash slows it down. Is there a way to disable flash completely until you need it?
For now, I'm going with uninstalled until I need it, then a temp install till I'm done using it.

You can install it and have it active on demand. Is under settings in the browser.
Browser > more > settings > enable plug-ins > and than set it for "On Demand"
So everytime u need flash just press the arrow that appears instead of the flash thing and it will activate it. Once u. close the browser the flash is disabled. It doesn't slow down the phone at all.

This is the solution and I wish it was default install but its not too difficult to find. There is no way I'm un-installing flash.

How to set UserAgent on Gingerbread

For all who like the new smooth Gingerbread stock browser but would like to set the User Agent, here are the steps to do so:
1. Open your stock browser
2. Type about:debug in the address bar
3. Press the menu key and tap on Settings
4. The latest option (UAstring) allows you to change your User Agent
5. Disable the "Show Java console" option.
This option is ignored unless about:debug is enabled. So if you see you're getting redirected to the mobile versions of websites you'll just have to retype it again in the address bar.

The settings are not saved after killing the browser or reboot. The only way to make it permanent is to edit the browser apk.

On Gingerbread they are saved. I have reboteed 4 times since editing that option and it never reverted back to default.
No need to edit the apk, so

If you look in the uastring field it wil show you "desktop" but if you try let say bbc.com the browser will redirect you to the mobile site.

I have this issue too. Even if I change it, it seems like it won't work unless I actually open up settings, and reselect Desktop (even if it is already selected), then reload the site.
It also does not persist through closing/reopening.

I tried this and it works!
Even tried opening bbc.com and it shows the full desktop view on mine.
Thanks!
I'm curious, are you guys using Gingerbread's stock browser now, but were using a different browser when you were in Froyo?
Ok, I got it. The browser does save the setting, but it ignores it unless debug mode is on: try rebooting, go to bbc.com and you'll get the mobile version; type about:debug and reload the page: Full desktop version! So as a temporary workaround it is enough to type about:debug when the browser is opened; I suggest also disabling "show java console" within the settings. In the meanwhile I'll edit the apk so that this option isn't ignored, shouldn't take long once I get to use a pc

Same here.
Does ediing the apk file help?
Anyone found a way to make this permanent yet??
Really love to use the stock browser if only i could have it load desktop uastring by default

is this info still valid?
on my sgs2 seems there isn't UAString.
debug voices are:
show javascript console
single column rendering
use wide viewport
normal rendering
enable tracing
enable light touch
enable navigation cache dump
set JS flags
work like a charm.. thanks!

[Q] Dolphin Browser Exit Settings

Does anyone have any clue why Dolphin HD keeps prompting me like this on exit?
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g88/Kopi22/SC20110623-134024.png
I have the Exit Settings set up as follows..to not confirm on exit
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g88/Kopi22/SC20110623-134037.png
Has anybody else had this problem with the Dolphin browser? I really like the interface, but I hate having to confirm exit every time.
Its not a problem really..rather a feature..in stock browser u don't have exit so u actually minimize it (app still runs in background)..but in dolphin u don't have this issue..pressing exit kills app..

But I do not want it to confirm that everytime, when I close my browser, I want it to close and not continue to run. And selecting the option to do that isn't working
For me, this confirm on Exit dialogue only pops up when I exit using the back key of my phone.
When you exit through Menu Button -> Exit it exits directly (if you've disabled the notification).
I really think this is supposed to be a feature, to not accidentally exiting the browser by pressing the back key, since everything tipped in or sth would be gone

I guess this is the workaround. I would like to be able to close it using the back button, without prompt, but I guess I can't just have everything I want now can I
sounds like a bug if your turning that prompt off and it still comes up, perhaps report it to the developers.
to keep ur privacy
Miren
In this regard, I much prefer Miren Browser. it's just as fast as Dolphin, without any annoying plug-in bloat or dialog boxes.
It's going to be much more consistent if they honored the preference of prompting (or not prompting) when you either explicitly exit or press the back button to exit. Alternatively, they can even have a separate preference option to handle the back case. It just gets really annoying to keep getting the dialog.
Just my two cents worth. Thanks!

Enable tethering

This is kinda the same as the Atrix, not sure who posted this but the steps for enableing tethering are pretty much the same.
1. Root
2. Install SQLite Editor
3. Under Settings Storage select Settings.db
4. Select secure
5. Mine is line 147 yours might be different (tether_entitlement_check_state) change value from 1 to 0 (Zero)
6. back out of SQLite till at home screen
tethering should now be working I have had some problems with restarting and having to go back in and change this setting back to 0, still trying to locate the problem but havent really had time to do so.
option 2
NO Root needed!!!
1. Download any cut from market
2. Open and select activity then select hidden menu this will give you all of the hidden menu options or you can just select connectivity test.
3. Open new shortcut and unselect entitlement.
tether will now be working but once again you will have to go back into the settings and reunselect this option if you reboot.
this way does not dissable the renableing of the entitlement still working on that.
Cool, thanks dude i didnt want to have to wait for a rom.
thanks man

Which one would be the best from the market? I did it for my Captivate oh do many months ago but I can't remember which one I used and on my Dell I never needed to do anything.

option 2 is a little easier, specially is you reboot often.
Sqlite only worked once for me. Once I rebooted my phone, it wouldn't work again no matter if I went and changed the field back to 0 and backed out or just pressed home key. It automatically changes back to a 1 when trying to hit usb tethering or hotspot wifi. Then go back and change it to a 0 and it switches it back to a 1 when I try and tether. KInda disapointed I spent the money on this app for this one purpose and now it's past the refund time.
I have been having more luck with option 2 using sqlite does have some problems this way it actually dissables the entitlement through a native app.
Option 2 let me turn on the Mobile AP but I have yet to test it.
I also discovered that if you try to turn on the Mobile AP using an app like Widgetsoid it reboots the phone! I'm hesitant to use widgetsoid for that function now.

Which apps should I download from marketplace? I'm new to android, haven't done anything rom related since 6.5 windows was barely released
Follow option 2 more reliable from my experience. And no paid apps required.

"any cut" is the name of the App that you can DL from the market.

I've been looking everywhere for this with no luck. Had I realized I couldn't bluetooth tether I probably would have waited for a different phone. Hopefully CM7 will be released soon-ish and support it.

Am I missing something? I just got my Thrill 2 days ago so I was not sure about tethering and all that because I have not had time to play with it. I just went to "Wireless and Network Settings", and its listed right there under "Bluetooth Settings".
It says; "Tethering & Portable Hotspot". Maybe I just got lucky but I checked the box with it hooked to my computer and I am tethered.
#1 Worked perfectly. Thank you very much!!
is entitlement under one of the other options? been looking still cant find it,

can you be more specific on the step by step process in option 2...sorry I'm kinda a newb but I would really appreciate it... if you could..I downloaded any cut but after that im kinda lost...i get new shortcut or edit shortcut in the app...dont see "activity"
you will need to select new short cuts.
OMG, thank you. Option 2 couldn't be easier. I don't plan on installing any custom roms or anything so this is perfect for me. "quotations" would have helped the n00bs understand the instructions better but I consider myself extremely n00bish when it comes to Android and I understood it. Thanks mucho.
thanks, option 2 works perfectly for LG Thrill!

Browser2Ram--reduce/eliminate browser lag--Root only

I'm not sure if this app has hit the Xoom yet, but since it has worked wonders on both my Transformer Infinity and my Nexus 7, I tried it with my Xoom, and it really improved my browsing experience. It works on AOSP browser and Chrome and may also work with other 3rd party browsers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34885711&postcount=58
Install the app (you may need to reboot) and grant root permission, and then, in your browser, type about:debug and hit enter. Go to browser settings and you should see the debug menu. Put a checkmark next to Set CPU Upload Path and Enable Light Touch. I uncheck View Java Console and leave everything else as is. Close settings and enjoy your new, smoother scrolling browser.
I also like using an app like Cool Tool (available in PlayStore) to monitor my ram. So far, so great!
I had nothing to do with the development of this wonderful app and the link points to t3hSteve who's the one who should get the thanks. If you try it, share your experience!

Yeah, I think debug menu may only work in stock browser as I've laid it out. Maybe someone else knows how to do it.

I can only deny security requests.

I really just noticed this when I installed a couple apps that use location and file data. When I launch the app I get the "Allow app to use your location?" with the Deny and Allow selections both there. However I can only tap Deny. Allow isn't greyed out but nothing happens when I tap it. I've searched a bit for this issue but haven't found a cause/fix. I'm completely stock right now. Went stock for dev preview but am back on 6.0.1 (MMB30J).
Help me XDA, you're my only hope.
If I have to I guess I can bust out the toolkit and go back to root/
Back to root w/twrp and same issue. Guess it's more of a Android OS thing than a root thing.

I've encountered this problem too but it was related to CF.Lumen overlay preventing activate allow button. Lux did the same. IF you have a similar app installed :
Settings > Apps > Gear icon (top right) > Draw over other apps > select cf.lumen, lux, etc and disable overlay perm. This also interfered with grant / deny root perms. Some Layers may also interfere.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I have a few that draw over. I'll have to see which one or more are causing the problem.
Thanks for the info. I'll update once I figure out which one it is.
I had the same issue and turned out to be File Manager HD by Cheetah Mobile
I just went through all my apps and File Manager HD was the culprit for me as well.
