Google Maps - Not Finding My Location - Touch CDMA Android Development

Searched the forum and couldn't find an answer.
I'm on a Sprint Vogue having trouble using Google Maps with any of the ROMs I've tried (Myn's Donut & Eclaire and Incubus's Eclaire).
Usually I just get: "Your Current Location Is Temporarily Unavailable."
I have temporary luck about every 15th reboot and then it stops working again after a few minutes.
Using the GPS Status app, I'm able to get Lat/Lon info so I know my GPS is working.
Any suggestions for something I need to be doing or enabling?
Thanks,
Jason

Are you installed on NAND or SD? If SD, does it work in WinMo? I personally have no trouble with it installed on SD with Incubus' latest Froyo (or any build I've used).
Also, where are you using it? Big cities with tall building can make it tough to get a signal (in case you weren't already aware).

strange, i could never get the my location right when i used to be on winmo, but no probs with android these days. i use myn's warm donut on sprint vogue.
some often, easily ignored things you might want to check: have you set your location in your google account? maybe your data connection halts when gps is launched? installaion problems - both android and/or gps? if installed on sd, bad sectors? perhaps you need to update google maps? idk.. just speculating

Assuming, your GPS is not broken and it worked under WM, move to a different location.
I get that message, when I'm in a specific location in my building.

Everybody, his gps works, he can see his lat and long...
Your best bet IMO is this response

Just to clarify for some of the questions:
Yeah, GPS is definitely reporting correct Lat/Long - confirmed by plugging the data into Google Maps on a desktop in various locations (work/home).
GPS worked just fine in WinMo.
Oh, and this is NAND.
Google Maps not finding my location seems to have no bearing on my whereabouts - in my car, at home, at work, standing in a parking lot... it's the same wherever I am.
I'll re-try those suggestions when I get a chance - thanks. Maybe I did miss something.

Just an update on this issue:
No matter what I tried I was unable to convince any Android build to make Google Maps find my location.
So I re-flashed to back to Win Mobile (yuck). Downloaded Google Maps. Found my location. Re-flashed to Android (FroYo). And now Google Maps in Android finds my location just fine.
Not sure what could have caused it to stop working in the first place. And definitely not looking forward to the next time it stops finding my location.

that is odd. Did you update your radio at all to a newer version that might have helped?

Yeah, weird.
No. I'm running the standard Sprint radio which I think is x.x.30.

Google Maps Problem

Every time I use the Track Location feature, it fails. I've uninstalled and reinstalled and it still won't work. It takes me to San Francisco instead of Chicago(which is where I live). It used to work the week I got the wing (about 2 weeks ago). It's pretty much stock. I don't use any ROM's and have even performed a clear storage. Any help would be appreciated. I have done a search.
Still isn't working.
It tells me to check the GPS settings. I haven't changed them nor do I know how.
Have you tried with a GPS receiver? (If you have access to one)
I have found that the track location feature while sometimes is surprisingly accurate most often is only close enough for a general location. Good for a local search but not close enough to pinpoint my location with accuracy.
But discrepancy that is off by states I have no idea. IT gets your location by triangulating from the cell towers, maybe there is a glitch in that area that is unidentified. It isn't something you could ask your provider about (actually they might have an answer or be able to help but I wouldn't bet on it), even though they might be at fault. You might see if you can report it as a bug to the google mobile maps team and see if they will respond.

Try a different phone radio firmware. Mine used to fail when I used the newest Radio. It's either that or the information about your towers has been set up incorrectly on google's servers. Find someone in your area with a phone that you can install google maps on and try to see if the problem is still there. If it is, contact google about it.
That just happens sometimes with Google Maps.
I live in germany and sometimes Google Maps says I am somewhere in France or Spain (one time even somewhere in the atlantic or pacifik...)
Just wait some time and try to locate again (don't restart google maps).
If that doesn't help, walk around a bit and try again.

Navigation without data?

Are there any apps that load full maps onto my gtab so I don't need to have a data connection to use my bt gps for navigation? As it is now, I believe Google navigation requires either wifi or tethering to work...
Co-pilot in market.
or you can find a version of motonav (basically igo 8.x) and maps from mobilism.org -- best 3d nav software out there that only requires gps, no data. map sets are ~1-2gb and you can get every single state and pretty much any country in the world now (teleatlas/navteq, mixed or whatever).
sort of tough for newbies to get really into customization, but i was huge into this on my past 2 mio devices, so if you need a hand drop me a line on here, no prob.
Thanks. I just dl'd co-pilot, but it says my trial is over, even though I entered my market order id.
I'll try motonav on my other machine and compare.

I use Co-Pilot. It is in the market, and if you want it for here in the good old USA it only costs $4.99..
Not as refined as a Garmin but it works. There is also NDrive. More expensive, more refined, I have never used it though..

I went round and round with Co-Pilot about that. I had it on my phone and had de-activated it but it would not activate on my G tablet. They sent me a link to download directly from them. It worked with my registration info after that.
How hard would it be to get Google navigation setup with an external GPS unit? I'll probably be picking up a GTablet soon, and am wondering how hard it would be to setup it as a navigator. Could it be done (if so, how easily) by hooking it up with a GPS unit? (Yea, it already does what I want the tablet to do, but its 3+ years old and slooooow to run haha). That or I could use the GPS on my phone once I get it running (HTC Vogue).

It is not hard to make GPS work with an external unit. Using Google Navigation though requires an internet connection since Google does not store the maps on your device. So you can use an external GPS receiver, and tether your phone for data. Or, there are ways to use the GPS in your phone and tether too. I have not tried it but hear it can be done.
BTW, I still have an ancient HTC Vogue that I run Android on too...

Yeah, my vogue has a slow data connection so I haven't bothered with any data-intense apps obviously like Google Nav. Guess I would need to get a different program on the Tab to hook up with the GPS unit itself. Any suggestions (preferable free ones haha?)
And w00t for another VogueDroider on here haha!

I would prefer to use Google nav because it works really well. The Vogue does not have wifi though and I have not found a way to tether it using bluetooth. So I use a program called Co-Pilot. It is only $4.99 in the market for the US version but it can be a pain to get activated on the G tablet. ALK who makes the program sent me a link to a non market version that did install with my registration info. It works ok, but not as well as Google nav. Seems to be missing plenty of addresses that are not new and should be there. They do have a way to let them know what is missing but I don't know how often they update.

Yes. I use CoPilot USA,$4.99 from the Market. You can download any or all US State maps for offline use. I use my DroidX as my BT receiver and it works like a charm. . . . I, too had trouble with activation. Had to send an email & call support Toni get it resolved.

Do you still have the link by any chance? I've tried 3 times on 2 gtabs, and each time it gives me error 703, my trial is over (even though I never took a trial).

No Joy with CoPilot
I purchased CoPilot through the Google Market place ($4.99 for USA) but no joy in installing it. Same 703 errors. Finally got through to someone in tech support (emails went unanswered) but their advice (basically wipe program and start again while downloading the maps separately onto my PC and then into the g-tablet) still resulted in errors. Since the holiday is coming up, this will probably not get solved in time for next weeks vacation/test run.
Oh well. For five bucks I wasn't expecting a lot and my MIO unit is still operational. Just hoping for some text to speech voice turns from my g-tablet. I will poke again after the holidays. Seems like a combination of the date not resetting or hard coded in the downloaded apk or authentification not getting out (since it is a wifi only machine; the program is expecting the telephone).
Unless anyone has any other suggestions?
success install after rom uprade
I installed latest ROM upgrade (3.1.1) and was able to get co-pilot installed and working. Combination of wiping user data and alk receiving gapps sales information.
No luck with John or Lisa. Anyone with hints for getting the voice portion working.

[Q] Uninstall maps 5.1 vegan-tab

how do i uninstall maps v5.1 on vegan-tab? the option to uninstall is greyed out. i have maps 5.0 from one of the threads thats supposed to fix 'location detection'. thx
You could use root explorer and delete /system/app/Maps.apk and then install 5.0 but I reckon you could probably just install 5.0 over 5.1 without removing the APK, though I may be wrong.
thx for reply, on your advice i was able to overwrite it to 5.0, but im still getting location temporarily unavailable. ugh. ill keep trying to find a solution if anyone knows it plz post, thx guys.
Where is it supposed to be getting the location from? GPS??
Wifi, just like my iPod
I think Maps needs GPS or 3G for location.
GPS wont work unless its paired via BT with one of the methods posted on this forum.
Search!
GPS on this device by itself won't work because it's not built onto the hardware.
not interested in gps addons, and i know the device doesnt have gps built in, from some of the other threads ive read there was a workaround or fix for the location problem. at this point im not willing to try them because its beyond my scope. but thx, if i wanted gps info i would have used that to search. entirely useless post, useless useless useless. go ahead and close the thread, as i said ive found some fixes. but as for my first post about uninstalling maps, poster 2 fixed that. problem solved. thx.

GPS Question

I was wondering, are maps in Navigate and Google maps stored in the phone or does it need an internet connection to work? Let us say you went on a road trip to some off-beaten place, where you do not have any signal from AT&T. So at that point, will the GPS still work? I mean i know the phone can still communicate with the GPS, but can you phone display the maps without the connection to AT&T?
I know GPS's like Garmin etc, have the maps of the entire US stored in it memory, so no matter where you go you get to see the map of where you are. TIA.

Google navigation needs a GPS signal to work but if you dont have one, what will happen is the directions will still be there, but your location wont update to your position.

you do need a data connection to use google maps and such.
i use copilot live and really enjoy it.
Thanks for the replies, so if I am getting this correctly you do need a data connection to fully use your phone GPS, otherwise it can probably still give you some text/voice directions like turn left in 200 feet, etc. but with no visible current maps (if you do not have a data connection).
The simple reason I was asking this was to see how much a phone GPS can substitute for a true GPS, like when maybe need to use it in some far-off place like Yosemite park, etc. Looks like from the answers so far the phone GPS is quite limited.
In my experience, Google Navigation cannot calculate your route without a data connection. The program will stay at "generating driving directions" until it times out and throws a network error. You can't really do much with Maps or Navigation without the data connection.
As far as map storage, Google Maps will cache certain map tiles that you recently (or habitually?) loaded, but Navigation will not. I'm not sure if Maps will even continue past startup with no data connection at all, though, for example with the phone in airplane mode. It seems like it would tell you that you need a connection. I can't remember what it actually does.
If you try to use Maps with no GPS, it will tell you to enable it and calculate your position based on wifi networks and cell towers. If you don't have any RF enabled, it can't tell where you are. Navigation, if it has a tower location with no GPS fix, will give you a top-down map view and tell you to follow the indicated route, and won't give you voice directions.

I loved the Garmin GPS products. Having maps offline with no need for data was fast and reliable. I wish they would make an Android product.
Oruxmaps supports offline maps but has no navigation capability unless I'm missing something.

I use MapDroyd for GPS without a data/cell signal. You install the APP, then you can download maps and store them on your SD card. You'll have maps/GPS anywhere. No need to worry about having a cell signal.
Just download the maps prior to heading out of town. You can download maps by state. I keep Oregon and Washington maps on my phone and never worry about GPS out in the midde of nowhere.
Sent from Samsung Captivate using Tapatalk
google nav needs to download the map at the time you start the trip, once it has a route the map is there but if you miss a turn it may have trouble recalculating without a cell signal. if there is public wifi it might work.
there are a number of apps in the market that are one time pay (unlike i phone where many are subscriptions) that store that maps on your phone but they take up massive amounts of space and take forever to download the maps. i have succcess with navdroyd, the gps quirks of this phone may prevent some apps from working well depending on the base rom so test it imediately in case you need to get a refund.

Google Maps with broken location

Has anyone experienced issues when Maps is trying to get a location? Can't get one, not even setting it in High accuracy. Seems odd for Google to modify control of GPS like that, i don't want my device turning it on even if it's for a short period of time. Any feedback will be apreciated.

I was having the same problem, Google Maps took forever to locate me and did not work in the end. I uninstalled the latest update and it seems to work now. The newest update screws it up.
