USB tether program? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just picked up the Vibrant (T-Mobile's version of Galaxy S) today. Is there another USB tether program besides PDAnet for Android? Hopefully point and click.
Thanks for replying.

I'm afraid you are at the wrong address here. The International Version of the SGS has an integrated piece of software that has been reported to work flawlessly.
For one you have a device specific forum and if nothing is going on, your post still doesn't belong in Android Development but in the Application section of this Subforum.

probably you should try easytether! great program for tethering your internet connection via usb!

Isn't there a possibility to debrand the Vibrant and to flash a not-branded firmware which allows USB-tethering. Some providers here in Austria lock this feature too but after debranding it works well.

I used PDA net for a long time, its the best Usb thether app!
You could also try updating the phone, you would get usb thether option and mobile ap also..

Wired tether connection issues

I'm running Ivan's .8t2 and was able to get the wireless tether to work with no problems.
Wired tether is a different issue. I've got the latest HTC Sync loaded which is supposed to have the appropriate driver for XP sp3 I just can't get it to connect or even recognize the "eris network". The app fire up fine on the Eris, but it's like I'm missing some network setup on the XP.
I've done a google search and have not found anything too helpful. Mostly iPhone to Mac stuff.
Thanks in advance.
I've been trying to figure out why its not working. the kernel may need to be patched, and I know the app is supposed to let you know if the kernel is incompatible. I'll look into the kernel issue, but be patient with me as I'm still learning this dev thang!
in the meantime I have been running the KaosLegendary 0.8 rom and use mobile network sharing under wireless and network settings.
Thanks. FYI, there is no such setting I can find with Ivan's ROM.
Sent from my Eris using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
yeah, you wont find that feature on an Eris based rom, I'm gonna see if I can add it tho.
on any phone, root or not, you could just download the "easy tether" app from the market. does wired tether for free, and is really really easy to set up.
Thanks to both for the help. The easy tether did the trick.
I had a feeling there was something missing from the laptop's side.
My Mom thanks you, too. Now the laptop can be taken to her place so she can Skype with her grand daughter and great grand daughter.

Is there a way to do a reverse teather?

I am scheduled to Deploy to Iraq later this fall and will be taking my trusty N1.
In Iraq you pay an incredible amount of money for the internet it is something like $75 for 96k. One on the down falls is you link up via cat5. I had my HTC Touch Pro last time and I was able to update data etc surf the internet using active sync via miniusb while it was plugged in to my laptop. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Not sure if this will work on the N1 (do any custom ROMs support ad-hoc WiFi?), but worth a shot: http://modmymobile.com/forums/491-jailbreak-root-access/544146-connect-g1-ad-hoc-network-solved.html (skip to "Step 3" for instructions on changing the tiwlan.ini file).
P.S. Needs root for obvious reasons.

Thanks for that link, I'll have to try it out!
[Edit]
Unfortunately Connectify's Access Point mode is only supported on a limited number of WiFi cards, as seen here. My fairly new (1 year old) Lenovo X61 Tablet can only do Ad-Hoc, which still requires modding the wpa-supplicant on the N1. At that point Connectify becomes useless, since you can enable ICS in Windows on your own.
sweet and thanks. i am using this in-flight on gogo so i have access to two devices and only pay for one.
Sorry you are having issues, but yea not all cards are supported. Luckily, both my desktop and laptop have been compatible. My laptop initially had issues because I was not on the newest drivers for the wireless card. If your card isn't directly listed on the unsupported list, it might be worth it to try and upgrade drivers and test one more time.
Unfortunately I am running Xp on my laptop.

The first link is a guide for setting up an ad-hoc connection on Windows XP, the second is a link to a change to the Android source code that's been abandoned 2 months ago.
The good news is that according to the comments on the 2nd link Google is working on implementing Ad-Hoc support. The bad news is that it's not in FroYo, so we might have to wait for Gingerbread to see it. Of course, there's nothing preventing CyanogenMod team from implementing this change into CM6, so they would be the best people to ask about it.
In the network settings on my mac you can 'broadcast' your connection. The tutorial I read showing me how to do that said windows has a similar feature.
You can use travel router and setup internet sharing...
Source: you have to right-click the connection source->properties->advanced and setup the internet sharing.
Destination: If you have a spare ethernet jack, GOOD! Use it.
I know some Ralink-based wifi cards support virtual AP mode (the best bet are Hawking and Asus and I have both).

Thoughts on Wifi Tethering or USB Tethering?

Anyone know of a good wifi tethering for a rooted captivate? If you don't know of a wifi tethering...what about a good USB tethering?
Thanks,
Chris

Wifi tethering is built into the leaked 2.2 rom. Just go to Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile AP
If not on 2.2, this is the best I've seen so far. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
USB tethering is built into the phone.
For 2.2: Settings > Wireless and network > Tethering.
For 2.1: Settings> Applications > USB Settings
Isn't the built in usb tethering in 2.1 so you can use at&t's subscription tethering service? If not I wasted $10 on EasyTeather. (which works like a CHAMP btw.)
PDANet adds the bonus of being able to text using your computer also. Costs more if I remember right.
For sure on froyo MobilAP is full of win.

Neither Hotsport nor Tether Works on Captivate
Hmm, so I tried "Wireless Teather" but failed to ever get the computer to recognize the wifi hotspot...any ideas there?
As for tethering direct from the USB, when I go to Settings > Applications > USB Connections, I only get the following:
Kies
Media Player
Mass Storage
Ask on Connection
No option to tether...
Ideas?

Samsung's i896 Captivate (Rogers version) allows for wireless tethering, stock:
Settings -» Wireless and network -» Mobile AP settings -» [hit the checkbox]
AFAIK, PDANet is a free-download:
junefabrics [dot] com/android/download.php [you know what to do]
This works for me, I've tested it: very easy setup.
Could it be, that the i897 (AT&T) rendition of the Captivate does not include wireless tethering by default...?

On the firmware that comes with it straight from the box, it does not include it by default.

Got WiFi Up and Running...But...
OK OK...thanks to the thread WIFI is up and running on the captivate (tethering I am still clueless). But I am using the latest version of WIFI TETHERING and it appears to be working fine. I am using wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre11.apk version on this site:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
BUT:
Here is the real pickle now....it works GREAT (about 2MBPS) until I try to bring a game up to play (like BF2). Then, the internet simply stops. Any suggestions on how to bypass this?
I know this sounds like a real trivial question...but the AT&T cap on data cards simply devastated our internet in my house (we live in the sticks). I am trying to find a good alternative.
To summarize:
Internet now works on WIFI until I try to bring a game up to play (like BF2). Then, the internet simply stops. Any suggestions on how to bypass this?
One possibility for you would be to install Cognition. It enables both Mobile AP and USB Tethering, among other things. You have two choices, Eclair or Froyo. Cognition 2.1.7 is Eclair and includes the JH7 rom update. This version is completely stable. The Cognition 2.2 Froyo beta versions are also good but there are a couple of issues.
I have had Cognition 2.1.6 installed since the day Froyo was first leaked. I decided not to intall Froyo until the release version is available. My version of Cognition runs fantastic. There are zero issues.
When you have USB Tethering insatlled, there will be an additional option in the USB Settings screen: Samsung Kies, Media player, Mass storage, "PC Internet" and Ask on Connection. PC Internet is the Tethering option.
I havn't used either wifi mobile ap, or usb tethering much, so I don't know how well either of them works, but just thought this might be one possible solution for you to try.

I like where you are going Creepy...but I have yet to see detailed instructions on how to install the ROM. I have done it on many phones, but Captivate step-by-step instructions seem to be lacking...

I believe there may be an easier way. I think I remember seeing a thread in the apps and themes forum about a ported mobile AP app from one of the i9000 roms. I could be wrong of course. I'd find the link but I just woke up and am now planning on passing out again

You probably already found this, but, you would be installing from stock 2.1 I believe, so here. This rom is drop dead easy to install:

Did you see this thread in Capitvate general? It might also be an alternative for you. I installed the full Kies program downloaded from the Samsung UK site at one point. I didn't keep it though, because I didn't need it. My PC is Windows 7. I have both working setup yesterday via Perception. All I did is go to Wireless and Networks and chose MobileAP. That's for the wireless. Then for the usb, I chose Tethering. My windows installed an Samsung NDIS driver for the device.
It works perfectly on the internet. However on VPN, it works but I get disconnected in less than 2 minutes. I am able to remote desktop to a Windows machine as well as ssh to a unix machine but after a minute, my access is gone. The remote machine wouldn't respond anymore. I had to disconnect my VPN then reconnect again. Not sure why.
I can't speak for the stock ROM since I've been on Cognition for quite a while and now Perception. However, I just tried the USB Tethering on Perception... plugged in the USB cable, selected Mass Storage... then went into Settings->Wifi->Tethering and turned on USB Tethering. Took Windows a minute to install the drivers and whatever else it decides to do when you plug something new in and withing about a minute and a half, was connected to the internet via my phone. (typing this on it right now actually)
I believe Cognition had the same option available... but can't be 100% sure since I never used it prior to just now.
Have also used the wifi tethering without issue since some of the earlier cognition 2.2 releases.

[Q] usb 3g stick - is it poissible

I'm using tnt lite 3.1.4, also had vegan, but none could do anything with my 3g sticks. Following different forums, I see most devices can (at least some specific sticks). Has anyone managed to set up a 3G conection? Is there a how to I could follow? What chipset the stick had?
Thanks,
T.
I tried a sprint usb aircard.. no go..
The only way I have been able to get a 3G connection is to wirelessly tether to my DroidX work phone...
1) Install Z4root on the droid and run it to root the phone
2) Install wifi tether on the droid and set up a wep key and ssid
3) Turn on the wifi tether
4) The table sees this wifi "router" or connection, I set the wep key on that connection, the two units negotiate an IP, and zap, it has 3G through the droid
Not sure if this is helpful, but that is what I had to do in my own situation.
if it's in the kernel, it should seriously work, but someone has to build it. there's absolutely no reason for this not to work if someone builds it -- it has conceptually worked in linux for years.

I can build the kernel but I believe we need to add some stuff in initrc for the usb to connect to serial (like ttyUSB). Once I get another Gtab, I'll look into this.

exactly man, thanks for stepping up! this will be ultimately useful on many different devices with usb host features, and shouldn't be ridiculously difficult to get going, and gain some real cred with the tablet community, especially now as we're the first with this new tegra2 platform, with over 20-30 new devices coming soon. i'm unsure of how many are wifi-only, but the ability to merely jack in with a 3g/4g usb modem would be ultimately useful to many, and will save a ton of money for folks.

The stick is probably seen in the kernel. The other parts, Networkmanager, dialier, ppp are not on the tab. They would have to be recompiled for the arm processor and I'm not sure what other work is needed.
Thanks Clemsyn. Using your latest kernel with Vegan B5.1. I bought a Novatel USB727 (Verizon) stick off ebay (built in Linux support) just to try this out. Would gladly test if needed.
I would also be happy to test with ATT and Verizon 3G USB modems...
Update:
Built a kernel with 3g USB support, used my friend's Verizon Mifi, plugged it in the Gtab and it turns on, Dmesg shows it is detected as Novatel wireless and shows it's serial info. That's about it, can't browse and use it. Any ideas?
I'll try my usb modem using the ubuntu load. It should have the other networking parts to dial and connect.
In the ubuntu load, networkmanager is not supported yet so usb modems are still on hold.
Yes please, we need this. I have a sprint card from work and would love to ditch the laptop when travelling. Clemsyn, I could send you a copy of sprint smart view 3g manager if you think it would help.

Same here. I've been using Wireless Tether on my rooted Droid X with an unlimited 3G data plan for several weeks and it is pretty sweet. And like you said, since I have my phone with me all the time anyway, this seemed like an obvious solution.
I would be interested in the progress of this usb effort since my carrier now offers 4G modems.

[Q] Rooted Captivate wont tether to Dell?

My Dell passed down from my father is ticking me off. My captivate 2.2 is rooted and TiBu froze the Teth Man 1.0 so I can tether my Laptop wirelessly and my Sony Vaio PC with the usb. No problems there. In comes this Dell, fast and pretty. Installed all the official drivers from Samsung, hooked up my phone, everything was going fine until i checked USB tethering.
As soon as i activate tethering, my phone is no longer recognized by the computer. In device manager everything works fine with the phone in debug. Drivers working properly and all that. Then i check USB tethering and the adb interface disappears, the android usb modem disappears... uncheck and everything goes back to normal. Doesn't happen on the other computers.
Does anyone have any clue what might be going on here? Is there a setting on this Dell I need to change? I'm running Windows XP pro 32 bit if that helps. Does anyone know what driver runs this feature? Because the device manager actually recognizes it as a samsung_android but can't seem to get the right driver to get it functional in tether mode.
Please don't send me a link to the Samsung website. Been there done that.
I would suggest you install PDAnet on both android and Dell laptop. PDAnet will install all the necessary drivers.
I have had similar problems.....I just flashed cappy to serendipity and went into settings...wireless and network....tethering. Just plug in the device to the computer and hit tether! Note: you may need to install drivers (kies mini

Bravo with the PDAnet suggestion. I've also been considering serendipity for some time and kies mini helped out a lot.
Updated problem: got all appropriate drivers with kies mini. Everything went fine. Installed an app called Masked Crusader to help with speed and performance. Ended up screwing up my phone to no end. Uninstalled and got internet function back on my device but am unable to tether. DNS issues. Can't seem to return phone to previous setting. PDAnet got me back online after the Masked Crusader fiasco, but only through usb. Mobile AP appears to be working but I can't connect my iPod, wii, or laptop... all from dns failure. You guys were more than handy getting my dell pc online, then I had to be greedy and screw things up for the hopes of increased upload speeds. Begging for redemption. I will stay on the right path from now on, I swear.

what i do is use mobileap for laptop. Then connectify from laptop to all others. Works perfect.
Mobile ap isn't working for me any more. *sad face* The market app called Masqed Crusader screwed it up. Supposedly it only changed my dns from stock to goggle's dns. Unfortunately I think it may have changed other settings too because mobile ap will appear to connect but won't transmit any data. Need to know how to find my original settings so I can try to set it back.
