About the OTA, you, and your phone - Droid Incredible Android Development

The reason we haven't said much on the OTA is it's not entirely official. Until it starts hitting everyones phones I wouldn't say it's released. And until then, it could change! We know the leaked OTA works with our tools still. But that doesn't mean the released one will. Once we KNOW what is final, we will make a method to update without the nonsense of ruu'ing your phones. If you wait, you will get a easier time. If you are in such a hurry to get 720p, so be it.

Yeah, I'm not really understanding why everyones rushing to get this on their phone. I'm waiting. I know once it officially hits our phones it shouldn't take long until we can patch it properly and still keep our root.

Yes, this i can wait for... a good, working froyo rom ---------- that's another story...

Thanks for the update and of course all of your hard work, it's really awesome when devs keep the community informed as much as you guys do.

I as well was wondering why people were rushing to get this done on their phone so fast. I knew you guys would be patching it I also noticed that you guys now have an unlocked bootloader?!

full nand unlock + whatever else this can accomplish (I guess anything now) here we come!

I am a tweaker by heart, so I cannot sit idle, waiting. I'm not saying its a bad thing to wait, its just not for me and I am willing to take the risks.

what does unlocked bootloader mean?

It means our phones are completely unlocked and we can screw them up even easier than before.

I am currently rooted, but would like the contents of the upcoming OTA. I understand that I have to revert back to stock and unroot in order to install this update, since the new radio is what I am most excited about. Is this our only option to go about applying the update? I like having root access, but ultimately I would rather receive the OTAs that will be coming soon. Does anybody have any insight about whether or not there will be a way to install these updates in the form of a ROM without losing root, or should I just bite the bullet and unroot if this is what I ultimately want with my phone?

That's pretty much what this post is about. Once the OTA is final and is actually being pushed, we will get a version of it that doesn't require us to go through the current process which requires us to unroot our phones.

I, for one, can wait for the rooted version of the OTA...continued thanks to the unrEVOked team for their unselfish efforts on our behalf.

LOL. I like to think that the reason the root still worked is because HTC isn't a douche like Motorola and realized that the hackability of the phone translates to sales of the phone.
Just my opinion...

Sorry, no, they would be quite happy to close the hole. And with the leaks posting the plaintext method up for them recently, they will pretty quickly.
To be honest all you most likely need as opposed to these elaborate methods to unroot, is to flash stock recovery back (hint, use reflash with the ruu's recovery.img as the image you select!), and then run the leaked ota as update.zip. But again, I don't see much reason to upgrade until it's official and we determine the changes.

ya def should have waited and flashed something like fresh 2.1.1 etc cause now i think your stuck.. sorry...
So wait, you flashed the "Samsung Moment" 2.1 update from Sprint and you come here expecting the "Hero" Devs to root your Moment? This is what im getting from your "Samy Oficial from Sprint" comment. I also really hope you fat fingered "Sammy" and "Official".

Im starting to think maybe that "samy oficial" was supposed to be "semi official". I've been to the ghetto and way out in the country "Backwoods, W.V.", ya just need to merge the 2 to get the language.
Tried using flashrec yet? you can do it all from the phone... that is how I rooted from 1.5. all from my sdcard and flashrec. EASY too..

Unfortunately my good sir, you flashed much too early. Sprint patched the normal root method in the leaked update, so now the way we normally do it doesn't work. Damageless has released a rooted version of the leak, but it's just for the impatient people on here, so be warned. If you're running damageless 2.08.1 you'll have an update in DCUpdater within the next few days.
As to your situation, you can't go back. You've already flashed, so you'll be waiting until Damage and company find a way to root from the official 2.1, instead of upgrading from root to root. Keep your eyes peeled, and use that search bar.

He's talking about the Hero 2.1 leak from yesterday or two days before, somehow a 2.1 update for the Hero got leaked from Sprint, and it has the release keys and everything. Damageless poked around in it and deemed it legit, so our May 21st release date is looking very realistic now. He has a Hero, and he obviously flashed the leak. Little did he know that the leak fixed root, and he's gonna have to wait a long time.

How do you know he's talking about the Hero Leak? Maybe he really is talking about the Moment that was recently update...How do you even know he has a Hero to begin with?
Well for starters it's a hero forum so that would be a natural assumption. Second, if he flashes the moment rom to his hero he would be complaining about having a brick not lack of root. I'd guess there is a very tiny possibility he has a moment and posted on the wrong forum but that would be a stretchas the thread title does say hero.

You're posting in a Hero thread, and would the Moment software even work? I mean yeah people are stupid sometimes but I don't think he flashed a different phone's rom to his phone. Also, he said "samy oficial" which we have determined to mean "semi official", that would apply to Sprint's "semi official" HTC Hero 2.1 leak. Moment's update is fully official, Hero's update is semi as of right now.
I'm 99% sure he has a Hero, flashed the leaked Hero 2.1 ROM, and wants to know when 2.1 can be rooted. Unfortunately, he should've waited, because now he has to wait MUCH longer

Wait for Froyo or root now?

Hi all. I've had my Nexus for about three weeks now, and while I originally bought it for Froyo, I'm getting impatient and have the urge to root and try ROMs like CM and Modaco.
Should I wait or just root and do it?

Even if you root you can still install Froyo. Its not like you're losing the ability to install Froyo by rooting. Actually, you don't even have to root to install Froyo now irrc..
I say go for it.
Then again, I'm a bad influence, and have a reputation for voiding warranties.
I rooted my phone within the first hour I had it - haven't looked back

There is no chance of bricking it unless you update the radio. You won't have to update the radio to flash most 2.1 ROMs.... you will have to when you upgrade to Froyo. Might as well go ahead and screw around on 2.1 for now

Does anyone else appreciate the irony of someone asking XDA if they should root?
It's like asking a kleptomaniac if you should shoplift.
I didn't root for 3 months until last week when I finally rooted. With froyo so close I thought about waiting. But once I rooted its now obvious that rooting is the way to go. Don't even worry about the official update coming. Just root it and you will have the official update earlier than if you don't root. Plus cyanogen is such a great ROM and totally worth it.
Okay so, I'm going to root and look at flashing some ROMs. Any guides out there? I see the sticky in General for Sense UI, but I'm not terribly sure if that's what I should follow or what.
Thanks!
Edit: started new thread.

Warning about up and coming OTA

While the leaked OTA 2.2 is fine, and rooted, you might want to consider using it or sitting and waiting when the offical one hits. It's looking pretty likely that the official one will be unrootable for the near future. The almost released and then removed EVO update is extremely secure and removed ALL our exploits. Even the ones we weren't announcing. Just wanted to get this warning out. If you run it, you may be giving up root. I highly advise waiting for safe ways to update.
As soon as we finish s_off (we're getting really close) you won't have to worry about complex flashes to keep a valid signature on zip files as you'll be able to flash anything. Please be patient and wait if you care to be rooted.

But if i update my radio now and installed a leaked rom and i found out later the official froyo is rootable, will i be able to get it with an already updated radio?

If you use one of the leaks, you can follow the tutorial in the Development forum to downgrade back to original stock software (including original radio). Shadowmite is warning people to avoid installing the official OTA which will likely update hboot, patch the vulnerabilities we used to gain root, AND prevent us from ever downgrading in the future. Scary thought.
The most important thing here is to never jump the gun, and instead, wait until Shadowmite or another reputable developer gives us the OK.

No, if you do upgrade your hboot than any attemt to downgrade will fail, as verizion and htc have disabled downgrades. Also it may fail if your main ver. is too high and you have no way of changing it.

so then technically the way outlined here ( http://androidforums.com/all-things...16-how-revert-back-earlier-version-hboot.html ) is only for this "leaked OTA" which means it's not the real thing.

My advice is READ READ READ/SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH
I did that for weeks before I even bought my Nexus One and rooted it over 3 years ago
Even after all that time, I have already read over a thousand posts thru out the One Forum in preparation of buying the phone
Lot less headaches that way and better chance of not bricking your new/expensive phone--

You need custom recovery to flash the SU binaries to xbin. But, once you get root, you can reapply the stock recovery via fastboot, though I Dont know why you would, you would lose much control of recovering your phone after any mishaps. Though I suppose you could reflash custom recovery in that event. Though you'd have to wait til you were near adb/SDK.

Dont want to lose the ability of getting OTA updates- thats basically it.
i have been rooted over 3 years and always get them thru roms sooner--never took one
have seen people taking updates and getting messed up
Also the fact that custom ROMs keep updating very frequently and I have itchy fingers. Think I'm tired of that. Unless a serious bug is present in stock ROM that HTC is taking too long to fix or maybe when Viper releases their ROM for the One, I'm planning on sticking to stock.

Once you unlock why would you want to receive OTA updates?

To keep my phone on the latest software? I hear lots of people who have rooted are not seeing the upgrade and I dont wanna deal with custom ROMs
as folks have said, read a bunch. and follow directions very closely.
gaining root access to the phone isn't tough. how much time it takes also kinda depends on what you plan to do with root access.
- if your with root is to use the stock rom, and just gain access to rooted apps, and maybe get rid of some bloatware (again read which one's are safe to delete first!), then rooting won't take too much time.
- if you plan on trying new roms and kernels to try to ring every last drop of functionality and speed and battery life out of that chunk of hardware, then expect it to take some time. this path is voluntary. but it should be considered a lifestyle, not a solution.
