GPS - Constant activity? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay... the past day or so, my GPS icon in my status bar has been constantly flashing (unless I turn off GPS).
Anyone idea of what causes this?
Icon in question:

You have navigation running.

No... I don't

Yeah, you do. At least when you took that shot. Pull down the notification bar and click then kill the arrow. You have to exit navigation and not just hit the home button.
Man I bet you are getting horrendous battery life right now.

OMG... Really? That's the phone from all the N1 advertisements, I am just using it to the the icon I am talking about. ROFL

we need to know what apps you have running, i've had that issue before with Beautiful Widgets when i had wifi based location turned off and i was in a basement so the GPS couldn't lock on a signal

Lol awesome. My bad!
I have noticed that happening a few times and it has always been a stuck program. Obviously you can narrow it down to an app that uses GPS and go through each one and start them and then finish them to srr of that helps. Or just turn off GPS and turn it back on.

Do you have Beautiful Widgets? I know that it sometimes goes goofy and keeps the GPS on. Not with the latest release tho.

Yeah... I do have Beautiful Widgets, maybe that's my problem. Will check it out.
Thanks

maybe you have geolocation checked.

Forgive me for piggybacking on this discussion, but I have a related question. Is it possible for apps to be using GPS (and thus sucking battery) WITHOUT the icon's appearing in the notification bar?

if GPS is turned off then it will try to determine your location using your data signal.

no its not possible. if any app uses the gps, that icon will appear. it is also possible that the phone will jsut pull your location based on cell tower approximation, which would not use gps, and hence not use as much battery anyway...

It just means your on the edge network.
i know what it means...is there anyway to make it go away?
do you mean to remove it from the bar? if it is so i dont know xD..
but... theres a reason for do that?
yea..i want it gone...i want there just to be the battery icon and the signal quality, sound, time, task
yeah i wish we could get rid of this too it's a waste of space in the upper bar. Expecially since it shows the "E" "G" or whatever in the signal strength area too.
Wisbar advance can do this and much more.
Here's my today with signal on the left side and connection, date/clock, today and close button on the right.
err, i want to keep my homescreen how it is now.....
here is an example of what i want.
As far as I know, you can't edit your top bar without replacing it (by using Wisbar), since there's no option for it within the Windows OS.
whats up dude!
alrighty...i give up then...if anybody finds a way please post in this thread...
i just realized...if i do make the logo go away...it wont display when I'm connect to wifi...so maybe I'm better off just leaving it.
It's not that obtrusive, and it's usually helpful to tell whether or not you're on EDGE or a 3G connection, or if you have neither.
I have set it so show small E or G on top of signal scale. As for wifi, it only shows when i actually connect to the network.
Check out scaps advanced config or kaisertweak, i thought i somethign about showing/not showing those icons. not sure what goes in its place though
kaisertweak doesnt have it...and teva, how did u do that?
neither does scraps advanced config
Below you can see settings for taskbar. You can set a lot of things and even use your own icons. It's a mighty tool for UI customization.
what program is that? wisbar?
err...i hate that program i just messed up my homescreen...had to uninstall...thank you anyway...I need to somehow find i way to either get rid of it..or make it little and ontop of the signal strenght

Thanks
WisBar Advance can hide the phone icon and still display the Network icon. It will also only display the Network icon when it is connected if you should choose.
I use both WiseBar and the other Lakeridge product (WisBar Advance Desktop) that ties into it to customize the desktop and create virtual pages. Began using it since my old iPaq 3800 and still like it the best of all the skin apps.

Looking for 2 apps.

Hey guys.
I've searched for a couple of hours for 2 apps and can't find them. I ran a search on xda and nothing.
First app:
A battery indicator that i can see in the notification area but does not have a icon on the notification bar. I want to be able to drop down the notification bar and see the status of my battery in percentages. I prefer my notification bar as clean as possible.
Second app:
Power controls in the notification area. I found Quick Settings, but that opens another app to change the settings. I'm looking for a way to activate wifi, bluetooth and so on just by taping something in the notification area.
Thanks.
So, the conclusion is that there are no such apps?
It s only too much.
Quick settings is very impressive. It starts the app from the notification bar, thats right.
But, what would you all switch from the notification bar:
Wifi
APN
Brighness
GPS
Auto Sync
Bluetooth
Airplane Mode
etc...
There are too much options for one notification bar.
I'm thinking that an app like this would let me choose 3-4 toggles. I realize it's impossible to have them all.
Oh, and a toggle does not take a row, instead all the toggles should be on the same row but with separators between them.
OK, I' have to say, that I never found such a programm. Sorry.

So the default power bar widget won't work for you? It's pretty much exactly what you pictured, however a widget.
If you want to choose and have your own order, use beautiful widgets.
Why try and cram this into the notification area? You have 5 desktop screens (more with add-ons and custom ROM's) to put this stuff. Navigation from screen to screen is fast and easy (even if you hate the swipe thing).
Or this even? http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.extendedcontrols/
Dunno, just lost as to why I guess.
Yes, you are right, it looks like the power settings widget, but i want it in the notification area to be able to change settings without leaving the current app and stop using the widget. I need the space for other stuff
moved to the Q&A section
What about quickdesk? Kmobs hads mentioned it on twitter couple of times. you can put anything you want even the settings widget and can change it without leaving the app.

Hm, its getting close to what i want. I'll give it a try.
UPDATE: It looks promising but it hijacks the "once press home button" functionality, meaning i can't get home. Uninstalled!

Are you talking about the widget? If yes, its not what i'm looking for. Like i said, both apps need to display something in the notification area, so no widgets and no notification bar icons.

i never tried it but damn is too bad the home button gets removed didn't know it. but the app is in beta maybe it will get fixed.
UPDATE: Today the QuickDesk app was released on the market and it fixed the issue, so now i can use it
One problem solved.
PS: I strongly recommend QuickDesk so go download it.

Yep, turn your roaming indicator on. Then it will no longer say "Roaming indicator off".
The only way I was able to get rid of that was to get another home screen with a different lock screen but if someone could figure out another way I wanna get rid of it too

There is no way to turn the indicator on or off. If your phone is roaming it automatically comes on. I want this gone too.

If you are roaming, then it will indeed turn your indicator on. I guarantee at that point, it will not say "Roaming indicator off".
Other than that, there is no way to get rid of it other than perhaps changing your home screen.
Speaking of which, does it cost extra to data roam with cricket? I'd call them and find out but i'm rather sick of their support line.
Data roaming is included in the Android plan.

the only other way to turn it off is with a custom ROM, sadly of which we don't have yet.
CM or some other ROM even had the option to customize what it said.
The variable for displaying it is in the build.prop

Well, I beg to differ really. I think its just a matter of finding it.
I have managed to find the files responsible for the "Roaming Indicator Off" text in the statusbar. 0.o Im in the process of getting it changed.
So, Im hopeful that I can find a way to get rid of it on the lockscreen as well..
The variable for displaying it isnt in the build.prop, its in the framework. I guarantee that I will have this solved entirely by tomorrow. Look for it in the openZIO theme.
erm...
Ahem....

High Battery Draining

So in the last two couple days i've been having a very high android usage even at night. and it's not letting the cpu go into sleep.

I understand it wastes battery, but my problem isn't related to that because it's ON since day one and i only experienced this drain 2 days ago..
Just reseted the phone and installed apps again it fixes the problem!
Your top three wakelocks are all WiFi related - svnet, wlan_rx_wake and wlan_wake.
Your fourth is sec-battery-monitor - some kind of battery monitor/saver app?
There were lots of cases of people reporting battery app savers/monitors/whatever actually causing notable battery drains, particularly if users don't set their sync policy right.
Let me give you an example: let's say you use some battery saver, and set it to disconnect WiFi when screen locks. Let's also say that you have some app configured to sync at all times. The app tries to connect, but can't, because the battery saver won't allow WiFi connection to be established, so the app tries to sync again and again and again....
And your phone can't get to deep sleep, hence the high battery drain.
Hope this helps.
Dial *#9900# then disable "fast dormancy" and press close.
Monitor your drain over a day and see if its better...

anjath, do you have Scott Adams' permission to reproduce that comic strip of his? I would not post it in your sig if you do not. It would be a breach of copyright, as well as being quite rude.

How to fix RILJ wakelock(:

In the forums i found a lot of people talking about wakelock dealing with RILJ and im pretty sure this should work for you.
Here's how you turn Background Location Reporting off.
1. Go to System Settings
2. Under accounts, select Google/Maps and Latitude
3. Maps will fire up and it should show the Location Settings screen.
4. On the top tap Location Reporting and select Do not update your location.
Now go check betterbatterystats after a few hours you should it go down.
Hadn't read this anywhere else, thanks!

If you don't have maps installed go to settings - locations - turn off locations. If you use google now, weather widgets or apps that require network location dont not attempt this.

Your not turning your data off your just turning off data when the app is closed. turning off locations is just limting certain apps
Not to function properly. not to argue and say it doesnt help i just dont see this as an fix for wakelock.

If you have maps installed. It has nothing to do with a app preventing your phone to sleep.
