2. If you chose to delete anything other than something that can be downloaded from the market, YOU took that risk. You have potentially just bricked your device.
3. DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING THAT HAS "BLUR" IN ITS FILE NAME.
4. DO NOT try to flash a custom recovery via Rom Manager then wonder why your phone is stuck with a cool new Motorola logo.
5. This thread will be updated very frequently, before posting questions and what not, just post your problem, no questions please, I will be using this to help as many of you as possible.
6. Most importantly do not mess with the framework right now, there is many $600 papers weights laying around now.

We tested this last nite,, you can do basically whatever you want as long as you put the phone back to pristine condition before you do a wipe or update or whatever..
Here is the basic method that works to copy files back to the phone if you took out bloat..

It seems that no one knows for sure.
People have been able to root, re-copy any removed system applications ( blockbuster, skype, etc..) apply the .604 update and stay rooted
Only time will tell for sure
I only deleted Blockbuster, Skype, NFSShift, and AmazonMP3/Kindle apps. Would I need to put those back on and unroot if I wanted to do a hard reset?

Un-rooting doesn't seem to be necessary

He is correct, we have had phones with tons removed, copied everythign back with the right permissions, took out all the things that root did, basically un-rooting, apply the update, then re-root, so you will have to put the phone back to pristine before the update, but it works fine.
At least it does for now. As for the rooting, it is a huge gaping hole in linux/android, not a specific phone or phone home launcher so it will likely not be fixed until at least Gingerbread 3.0 IF THEN. Bird really smoked the monkey on this one, i would marry him if it was legal.
But yeah, dont freak out if u removed a ton of stuff, here is a complete pristine system app dir if u need:

Check the permissions from one of the files you did not remove
I'm not 100% sure that will work
It is 644 if I recall correctly.
I think you need to check the umask for each file as well
ON the post on how to put back backup assistant it tells you the permissions for all the files in the app dir

So I wanted to install a status bar replacement for Droid X, which involves replacing framework-res.apk. Instead of doing it through adb, I replaced the file with Root Explorer, and it sent it into boot loop. Do I now have a paperweight? =/
I tried doing factory reset, but that didn't fix it...
Edit: It sees update.zip on my SD card in recovery mode (some file I think I downloaded before), so is there a way to maybe apply a recovery command to replace framework-res.apk?
Edit2: sigh, nvm, there is no update.zip on the SD card, I'm not sure where it's reading it from. But when I tell it to apply it, it doesn't find it either. Looks like I bricked my phone

The Titanium Backup "Freeze" feature has been working like a charm for me. I've frozen all of the bloatware (the autorun stuff) and seen no adverse effects on the phone.
The phone seems to perform better without the running bloat. But this might be a placebo effect. The jury is still out...I'm testing. One thing is for sure, I feel better knowing that useless extra processes are not running in the background.
The big open question for me is how does the TB Freeze function work? Is it like the task killers or does it intercept the app on boot?
It does not change anything in the root directory since all the *.apk files are in tact for the frozen apps. This is the main reason I use the freeze since there seems to be little risk of bricking the phone with this method.

The latest Verizon update isn't doing me any favors. I'm a rabid baseball fan and it trashes MLB at Bat live game video and does some other rather unwanted stuff to Flash. It was easy enough to flash the original system back on and blow away the update so everything worked again but now the SGT insists on reminding me fairly often that there's an update I want nothing to do with. Any idea on how to shut it up?

Incorrect. Rooting will not stop it at all. Perhaps if you use root explorer and go into cashe file and remove it that might work for a bit. Not sure but rooting will not

Good luck with that. I deleted the 2 files in my cache folder using root explorer that had the correct size and date. It seemed to work..... untill I had to reboot my tab. After I rebooted, I got the notification again, and this time, there is no file with today's date or the correct size in the cache folder.
I was getting constant popups the first time around untill I deleted those files, after which, nothing untill I restarted. So those must have been the correct files. I don't understand where the new ones are now.

Rooting alone will not stop the ota. The developer of the custom rom generally removes the ota feature.
note I have not tried this since I already got the update....and if you brick something its not my fault...
you could try to change the ro.build.fingerprint so maybe the update service still think you already got the update. this method worked to stop a droid ota update.
in /system/build.prop file change it to:
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/SCH-I800/SCH-I800/SCH-I800:2.2/FROYO/EC02:user/release-keys

In the past, people have renamed "Otacerts.zip" to "Otacerts.zip.bak" in /etc/security/ . You may also want to choose "Install Later" first, then delete the file in the cache folder on your SDcard. Then reboot.
You can use either Root explorer (easy option) or Terminal, though every time I try to install a Terminal emulator, it fails on my tab
I haven't tried this myself, but I will be doing it tonight.
my understanding with the cert rename is that the user will still get the download and the prompts to install....its just that it fails during install when the signature doesnt match
so you will be saved from accidently installing but will get a lot of notices that you need the update.
I could be wrong though.

This is bull****. Damn pop ups every 15 minutes, I feel like im trying to surf the web with AOL. My poor 4 year old was trying to watch a movie and I kept hearing her get upset, stupid update would interfere with the movie.
Im not going through all that bull**** just for an update I dont care about, there has got to be a way to kill this thing off.
Any progress on this? I read about editing the build.prop to EC02, but that didn't work for me either.

What I did on my Droid Charge was back-up build.prop and then change every place where to referenced the old build number and change it to the new build number. Then I saved the file and then rebooted. I got one last warning about the OTA update and then it went away.
POST REMOVED.
I'd like to apologize for posting this update which had previously been available to soak test members and not in wide release. The file was not altered in any way or distributed with any intent of causing harm to Motorola or Verizon.
It was a bad judgment call in posting it for others to use. I was excited at the prospect of bug fixes and feature improvements to what is an otherwise fantastic phone.
That is all. Nothing to see here. Move along.

The patch has fixes for many items:
- BP upgrade for the Radio
- Talk2 for Video
- Boot.img patch
- Recovery.img patch
- Various patches to alot of system files
- And some stupid bloatware patches as well.
User's beware if you also want to patch this file. Be sure to be as close to stock as you can get.

This sounds like the OTA that is being pushed to D3 owners that are in Motorola's soak group. Radio fixes and whatnot for battery life purposes. I could be wrong though.

Million dollar question. I want the updated gtalk when I get my replacement D3 tomorrow. I'll be completely stock so I'll be good to go on this as long as the same root exploit exists. I can't imagine they had time to remove it though.
You can re-root using the same exploit.

Done lol, I just took the apk out of the update and installed right over the existing. You also need the libtalk_jni.so from there and out it in the syste/lib folder and you are all set new gtalk with video
So I have another question, if all that is modified is that fact that it has been rooted, what is wrong with flashing this while rooted? Wont it just unroot us at worse and we will have to reroot? Just trying to understand.

Just did. You will need to reroot.
Will this fix a softbrick if you can get into recovery? Any thoughts?
I would imagine the update would fail. If you modified the phone to the point of bricking, I doubt the update would run.
Works great. Already seems faster. Battery reports less for cell standby and phone idle. Either the reporting is better or they fixed the issue.

I've been trying for a while to get this flashed. Even went so far as to reinstall bloat that I had deleted before to see if that would work and it's giving me the same error every time.
I have some really good news, I soft bricked my phone a little while ago because I was an idiot with deleting my apps. I needed my phone and was going to activate the insurance and pay the deductible when I figured I might as well try this. I wiped the cache and data and applied this through the recovery mode and My phone is fully operational now. I can access my contacts, texts, setup accounts and not one force close yet. Now for disclosure I am probably very lucky this worked for me, try at your own risk. I am way to scared to try and delete apps again until I get a proper backup or I see enough people try it themselves with no issues. But to OP... Thank you very much you just saved me $100
edit: Found one glitch, dont know if its my specific phone or not. But if wifi is on and you receive an e-mail the notification light will not go on, if wifi is off it will... Very minor bug though.
So won't this update be available automatically? How does it work with motorola?
So I must be an idiot or something. I put the file on the root of the sd card and then booted into recovery. It gave me an error. Said can not mount sdcard file or directory doesn't exist.

For those of you that do not want to DeOdex their phone manually, here's a script I created to do it for you. I've created this same script before for the Droid X, and it's quite simple. Here's what you need.
1) Your phone must be Rooted.
2) You must install Bionic_Bootstrapper.
Below you can find these items.
COMPLETE GUIDE TO ROOT AND BOOTSTRAP
Once you have that.... download my DeOdexer and put it on your sdcard.
Bionic_AutoDeOdexer
MIRROR
Reboot into recovery. BACKUP YOUR PHONE!!!!
Once that completes, then go to install from zip. Choose file from zip... find the Bionic_DeOdexer zip file... and run it.
There is a script at the beginning that checks the build.prop file and makes sure you have the correct build. You must have 5.5.1_84_DBN-55. If you do not, I hope it fails.
Reboot.... and all should be good. Now that you are DeOdexed.... have fun theming!
As you should know, do this at your own risk. Yes, I've tested this on my phone and had no issue. This doesn't mean you won't experience a problem. I'm not responsible for what happens to your phone.

Have you removed or touched any of the system/app/ 's ?
I'm running the rooted stock rom. I haven't removed any programs or modified/renamed anything in /system/apps, however, I did freeze some of the bloat using TB. Do I need to defrost the apps first before running this script, or does it matter?

If you modified any of the APKs, to include freezing them, I cannot guarantee it will work. Best thing is to be completely stock and rooted. At least that's the way I did this script.
Thanks for the answer! TB has a batch defrost, so if I decide to go ahead & run this script, I'll defrost everything first.
I did mine with frozen apps and it seems to be working well. Was able to install the 1% mod and use a custom battery icon too.

Good to know. I do know that depending on how the person downloads some packages, they may get corrupted during download. If it fails one time... try again. If it continues to fail, re-download and try again.

Kind of a goofy question, but is there any reason that deodexing the stock (rooted) rom would worsen data loss issues?
The reason I ask is that I reverted to stock yesterday after experiencing substantial data problems with UNLEASH3D 1.5. Ran well for the entire day and this morning. Then, a couple hours ago, I ran this script and have had nothing but issues since, with both WiFi and cellular data dying, and not coming back without a reboot. Reverted to stock again, and all is normal.
Any ideas?

I have these same issues on stock, on .892 and on any roms - I really think it is just the phone :/ - there is a known bug on the bug list about data connectivity issues.
Btw the .892 radio is complete crap.... at least on my phone it is...
Market Apps
After running this script, I noted that my normal list of around 60 or so market apps is now showing only around 13 apps. Also, the market app asked me for authorization when I started it up. So, I don't know if this script, or maybe an automatic update to the market app has caused my missing downloaded apps.
They are still on the phone, and still backed up with TB, but they are not shown in the market My Apps page.
Any thoughts or solutions?

...Argh, never mind, this phone seems to have a mind of its own. The account chosen for My apps was not my main google account but another one. Not sure how this happens, but I find little things like this all the time with Android. My favorite is that my email delivery settings (push vs. manual vs. schedule) seem to change on their own!

Believe it or not, I just had someone offer me (sum too much to speak of) for my Zio, so I just sold it tonight.

But, the good thing is that I can go get another one since Cricket is still selling them for only ~$50 but I have to wait a few weeks till I actually have enough to get the first month of service (wish I could just buy the phone but, whatever).
Anyway, so while I won't be participating at this precise moment, here's my contribution - the first ROM uploaded to Dropbox as requested. I haven't used my Dropbox account since I created it, so I have no idea how the hell it works to be honest (signed up so a friend got more space or whatever, no idea). Which one's are still auto-installing themselves onto our phones?
I have a script that can remove those applications from our phones if they are still appearing for some of you.
The ram difference isn't available yet due to my init.d script not working either because of the kernel or my permissions or something else.

I have a script that can remove those applications from our phones if they are still appearing for some of you.
The ram difference isn't available yet due to my init.d script not working either because of the kernel or my permissions or something else.

So far my experience with this phone is that the wiping dies not erase anything. So the stock apps will not be gone unless the end user removes them. I installed a custom boot screen over the cricket one and it has never been removed. Even after I restored the stock image it was still there.
I will be installing vbox on my laptop's windows 7 OS later and unpacking the kernel stickied on the forum and the one in open zio to see why init.d scripts aren't working and what are the differences I'll maybe have an updated release of the rom next week....

I noticed that myself, as I can't get the cricket stock apps to re-appear but I have a script for you all to run if you want those apps gone. It wont work though until I figure out this init.d startup script problem. As for your "boot screen" do you mean splash image or boot animation?

the boot animation. before spaz created his rom the only way i could install a different boot animation was to overwrite the stock images with alternate ones for a custom boot experience. I removed all the cricket apps right after I got the phone plus half of the google junk that i dont use.

hey i just installed your rom. only one small issue you should include some kind of file browser so we wont have to push one onto the system to access our data. also it would be nice if you could add the reboot option like spaz did.
It's because I didn't do a wipe of the data partition. I figured the updater script would do the wiping.

Mattix nope it doesn't wipe the data partition that's why I instructed to do so
As for jlmancuso I have never added a reboot option to the end button long-press options. But I can add a file browser Is ES File Explorer okay? Or would a different one be better?
I use ES file explorer myself. Though any browser of your choosing would be perfectly acceptable. I like the stripped down style. Keep up the good work.
I'd say root explorer but it's a paid app... I can also make a backup of gapps and upload a zip.

As for gapps I already have that ready for the next release but thanks for the offer. My main focus is the init.d script problem which i can't really examine until next week/this weekend maybe. But I'm working on it.
Is anyone else getting force closes on the Google search app, and force closes in acore while attempting to save contacts?
I think there was a few too many pulled off the system that are necessary for everyday use...

were the force closes due to not having a browser at first boot of the rom? or when you have a browser downloaded from the market does it still force close?
if so in both situations i may have pulled to many apps. i'm still working on them rom atm
I just got this phone last Friday. It's my first Android phone, but I've used Android before on my Kindle Fire, which I rooted and tried all sorts of ROMs and customized the hell out of it.
So I was really excited today when I found out about the root package! I just got it rooted, had to factory reset first, but that's OK. But since my phone is a Canada Bell model (and I live in the US), it's a got a bunch of apps that I can't use and don't want.
I googled and found a site that gives a tutorial how to use Android Mate to remove the crapware, but in searching through /system/apps, I don't see the Bell stuff, maybe I missed it or it's named something different.
Any tried doing this yet?
Instead of removing them, I suggest you freeze them with titanium backup. Download it from play store, open it, click restore/backup, tap the app you don't want and select freeze. It saves headache and it's not like our phone has a lack of free memory

You need to switch to r/w in whatever explorer you're in. Either that, or you're not rooted

System Tuner allows you to uninstall system apps as. Forgot that setcpu wakes up the phone a lot when profiles are active but system tuner is also good for underclocking.

How do you get back all the Stock apps?

Good day friends,
I did erase APK's from /system/app and /system/vendor/app and /system/preinstalled/, but, i till get the icons for att familymap, amazon kindle, live tv, mesages, myatt, qik lite and real racing2.
Is there anything else i am missing in order to get rid of this apps ?
I do understand the phone has enough resources to carry these apps around, but i just dont like having stuff that i dont really use.
Also, I know how to fastboot to fxz in case i screw something up.

I went crazy after root and deleted almost all bloatware...
However I realized that after deleting YP mobile stock app, the option in contacts for YP does not work
I re-downloaded YP from the market but it's still no go...
Can somebody upload stock YP apk and tell me where to put it since I am not sure was it in system/app or in system/vendor/app
Or at least if you can give me name of the original stock app and its location I can try to rename the one from the market and move it to its appropriate folder.

Addition
I have made a new idea on removing bloatwares. The idea is that the user can select the apps that are to be deleted in aroma. I have already made a project regarding this but only for my device. You can port it to your device and maybe share this with everyone.
