Modding home screen - Droid X Android Development

Lets say I delete BlurHome.apk
I no long have a home screen.
Is there anyway to permanently replace this with another home.apk, and delete the BlurHome.apk?
are things like launcherpro just skins or do they completely disable BlurHome.apk?
Thanks

Do not delete anything with Blur...

Launcher pro or adw completly replace blur and are not skins

Yes it replaces it but you never want to delete your default home.

Did you make a copy of it before you deleted it? I hope so.
Too bad so many people are quick to delete without thinking about needing the file again. These are the people that post on other forums asking for files they deleted. Personally I would not delete any file - especially the blur files. Change the name to .bak or something like that. That makes it easy to go back to normal should you need to.
Storage space shouldn't be an issue with the DroidX. If it is, get the 32gb SD card.

Porting the Aero Theme onto Hero Launcher.apk

Here is what I am trying to do, I am not using the TouchFLO interface on Hero, I am using the default Launcher. What I want is to make this default launcher have all the Aero theme properties, such as the transparent menu tab. I know that for icons I will have to manually recreate, which is no problem I can do that. However... everything else I am not so sure. I tried taking the Launcher from the Haykuro Aero 6.0.1 ROM and creating the .odex and pushing it into system/sd/app. However, Launcher won't show up as a default for the home screen. How can I get this to work? For now I am stuck with the default launcher, which looks pretty boring considering it has Hero under the hood.
EDIT:
Ive gotten the Home option to show up in the default menu. However, I am getting a force close for process.acore.
Why don't you use the launcher that came with the hero rom you're using. Drag and drop your drawables, then resign? as long as you have room in /system i don't see why that wouldn't work.
For your icons, you dont have to "recreate" them... just open up your apks in both updates, go into res/drawable and find the icon image... it'll be called something like: ic_launcher_browser.png or app_icon.png or icon.png. put those files into the corresponding apps and resign.

lol thats what I meant by recreate, but for some reason I don't need to resign... I use winRAR to open them and drag and drop without resigning and it installs just fine..

Alright, I dragged and dropped the whole "res" folder from the Aero Launcher into the Hero Launcher and resigned it and pushed it to /system/app, once again, the option for Home no longer shows up as a default. When trying to install via ADB, I get "INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE"
You're probably not going to want to use adb install. More than likely ADB Push would be a much better option, since it doesn't check anything, it just ignorantly places the file in the specified directory.
You're home app will probably be in /system/sd/app_s depending on the rom, so you'll end up using something like "Adb push /pathtofile/Launcher.apk /system/sd/app_s/" without the quotes.

You probably don't wanna drag the whole folder, chances are that some of those xml files are incompatible with hero framework. i would just drop the .9.pngs in there....
Its really not that hard there is PLEANTY about this in the theme forum. You need to explore your drawable folders, don't be shy, look for the icons and replace them with the ones you want. You can find a chart that tells you where to find most files your lookin for. Check the theme stickys, their nothing but good. Oh and resign the apk, or drop the apk in the update and sign it, your getting force closes and stuff it ain't workin.

Launcher Pro not responding at boot

Lately I've LP has been freezing on me in a few moments after boot, basically after media scanning is done my UI is frozen and I need to bring up task manager to close out LP and exit out of task manager and it runs fine again, anyone know whats causing this?
it happens i think. i remember just installing chompsms and it's been happening since. switched to handcent and the problem's not there anymore.
maybe some application is causing it on your end?
I have the same problem! No matter what I do, Launcher Pro freezes after booting up, I have to close & re-open!
I had the same problem no matter what setup I used on my phone, even did it straight after a clean factory reset. Gave up with it in the end and am using Zeam Launcher now, very quick and responsive although I do miss the LP widgets
Found a fix, its caused by the .andriod secure folder on the EXTERNAL SD.. delete all the contents from there and mark the folder as READ ONLY and reinstall your apps that were there w/o the EXTERNAL SD card to guarantee they dont come back.
100% fixed on my end!

Ain't that the folder used by apps 2 sd? I would rather put up with fc in lp then screw with app 2 sd.

I dont even use app 2 sd in the first place.
I still have thouse hangs at bootup, sometimes goes fine, sometimes it is needed to be closed. I had this folder on my external sd, the folder is empty. Read and Write flags are off
Any other suggestion?
I have same problem... +1
it looks like its an actual error with the app itself, i have had this problem lots of times, i did a full wipe and only installed launcher pro, nothing else, the only 1 app i had on the phone was launcher pro and it still froze.
i just went to ADW launcher, i like it alot and you can resize widgets and stuff, very customisable..
2nd favourite is zeam, would be my number one but i couldnt figure out how to save the settings... theres a wide range of other launchers why not try something else ??
my LP does that as well on my vibrant. it really isn't that big of a deal, unless you repeatedly reboot your phone...
just wait a little while after your phone boots and just let everything load up
Yes, we can try another launcher, but launcherpro is best for me, because I want grid 5x6 icons. Go launcher is great as well, but there is max 5x5 :/

[Q] Any way to change Task Killer widget icon?

With the atk app there is a widget you can place on the home screen that when pressed, instantly kills the active apps. The problem is, its kind of small and looks out of place with my theme, but I cant seem to find a way to change it. I'd like to be able to use a custom icon with desktop visualizer or something to be able to activate the widget's functions, but I can't figure it out.
ps, I don't want this to turn into a debate about whether or not to use a task killer, try to stay on topic.

You really don't need an app..... joking.
I've REALLY been wanting to know this as well. Likewise, it does not fit my theme or icons at all. It's the only out of place icon throughout all my homescreens.
I am also trying to do this, so I should probably add to the list of people and hopefully someone has a solution.
I'm using ADW and tried the custom shortcut but I can't find the activity that carries out what the widget does.
Any of the task manager activities just bring me into the app, rather than a direct autokill.
Also, I don't know if there is an android system activity for it, because I can't seem to find that either.
That's all I can contribute from my efforts anyway..
you'd have to do an adb decomile or winrar whatever then change the icon for the widget and resign the file. there are already versions floating around where people have done this already do some looking around...
Really? I've searched and came up with nothing, just back to here really, or other people asking the same thing..
If you had a link then that'd be handy, if not then thanks for the hint on a starting point..
I can change the icon for any application!

Yes,man!I already did different icons for widget actions!
I've done this before. All you need to do is rename the .apk to .zip and open it in your PC. Navigate to the icon image, replace with yours, rename the zip to apk push it to /system/app, fix permissions... dunsky.

I never thought of that, I'll do that now..
And while you're here, you might know..
since you can't put a widget in a dock bar, is there way to assign the same widget function to a desktop shortcut?
Similar to the activities in adw launcher..

[Q] desktop app name cutoff

Is there a tweak or setting I can adjust so the names of apps on my desktop shows its full name rather than a fading-cutoff?
+1
Also wondering about this and the ability to maybe give a shortened name to an app on our homescreen.

Have you tried Go Launcher? It's similar to Launcher Pro, but it's free and you can rename applications on the home screens.

With Launcher Pro you have to use SQLite Editor. There's a free one for Windows, but can't think of the name right now. Use Root Explorer to grab /data/data/com.fede.launcher/databases/launcher.db
In Favorites you'll find all the titles. Just rename, save and replace the file. Do a backup first in case anything goes wrong.
Launcher pro always asks if you want to use a custom name when adding to the desktop for me though I choose to hide them altogether.
Also, iirc bettercut and desktop visualizer can do this quite easily.

I open the app drawer and just press and hold the icon, and add it that way. I just tried the way you described, and it was really slow to load.
I guess depending on how lazy I am, will depend on which method I use.
@mistaken
I occasionally see the slow load time for app list on the first use though it is not nearly as bad as it used to be.

[Q] A dumb question about restoring apps after wipe.

Historically, before a wipe I run a TB batch and backup all my user apps. Then after I put on the new rom, I drop on the full version TB and do a batch reinstall. Unfortunately this doesn't reset my screens, and it's a pain in the butt.
I'm wondering two things:
1. I saw this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=965594 and I wondered if this works on Gingerbread roms (no reason it shouldn't, right? but I can see going from Froyo to GB it may not...) (Also, I don't see a way for TB to restore home screens, am I missing something?)
2. I've cheated before and dropped some non-provided system apps directly into the system-app folder. If you drop your favorite app .apk's into the system-app folder within the rom zip, will it install them even though that's the protected folder?
Really, it's just time consuming to reinstall all the apps and reset the home screens, especially when Mix Master Mikey drops a new GR version approximately every time I get the last one updated.
Updating home screens is a pet peeve of mine too.
I have been using SGS tools going from each release of GR to the next. But, it only works with touchwiz.
Now I'm on Mosaic (seems more stable but TW 3 instead of 4) it mostly worked, except Widgets.
This is the reason I don't even use 3 screens .... too much a pain to reset every few days.
I wish there was a better universal solution to this problem.
Sent from my Captivate running Mosiac I
I think it depends on your launcher. I'm currently using regina launcher and after updating to the newest GR and using TiBu to restore my apps, my home screens are set except for the widgets.

I use launcher pro and my apps are all in place when I restore that. I believe also if you go to restore apps and system data deselect everything then press data only then select the green items one of those will put ur apps back in place. That is what I do.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
All right. I've been toying with launchers for a while, right now I'm on Zeam, I've used launcher pro and ADW in the past. ADW had the ability to restore screens, I suppose I should look more into that. I like how Zeam lets you put 0-7 icons in the dock and lets you auto-center them, but I suppose I can find a good alternative.
Right now I double-tap to get my dialer, swipe up for apps and down for notifications and it seems to work pretty well. I'll get my fiddle on this next week.
Thanks again.
