WiFi on the touch with Android? - Touch CDMA Android Development

Hi,
I was wondering if it is possible to use a wifi (micro/mini/regular)SD card on the verizon xv6800 on android. I know that there was some success using this adapter
ameri-rack.com/APA-TFC1m.html
to a full sized sd on WinMo (6.1 iirc), but not much was said about it. I'm on verizon and really can't afford the data plan, but without _any_ internet this phone isn't really worth it to me. If the wifi works at all with android I'm going to buy one!
Thanks,
Jeff

Idk if you've checked it out, but you can look at the "Using Android Without a Data Plan" guide in my sig - you can do most of the stuff you can do with a data plan/wifi like getting apps, but its a roundabout manner

yeah, I've checked it out, and while great that most features can be made to work, I'm on a college campus with wifi all around most of the time, so having wifi would be great.

Well, the micro sd wifi isn't the only option out there.
there is a mini usb to wifi adapter you could use:
http://www.dhgate.com/10pcs-newest-...r-11g/p-ff80808127be294d0127d11b43965e88.html
and then there is a micro sd to sd adapter here: http://www.ably.com.tw/pdt/viewpdt.asp?absp=3&cat=OTHERS
and then you could use a wifi sd card like: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0ADBMXW7P49F2R23KJJY
I also heard there was microsd wifi cards, but were double the size lengthwise and stuck out of the phone. and they also didn't have much luck with compatibility.
im not sure if any of these methods work, and i doubt the will. you will probably need a driver for the usb mini adapter. but a website(http://acassis.wordpress.com/2010/01/27/microsd-wifi-with-linux-support/) says there is a linux compatible microsd wifi card made by a japanese company, and android being linux based, who knows.

aa

also I have posted another SD wifi card, I don't know if the eye-FI one can do anything but transmit the data stored on that particular card.

Here's what you would need hardware wise.
-SDW-821 SDIO Wifi card
http://www.buy.com/prod/spectec-sdw...d/q/listingid/22339724/loc/101/207906321.html
-A MicroSD to sd adaptor with a ribbon cable.
http://www.ably.com.tw/pdt/viewpdt.asp?absp=3&cat=OTHERS#
(You can supposedly send their sales team an email and they'll hook you up)
I can't justify spending more than I spent on this phone on speculation, but if anybody tries it and it works, please post back because many of us would love for this to happen.

yes, this is exactly what I'd love to know. If I owned the phone then I'd be happy to drop the $50 or so to test it out, but my getting the phone right now is contingent on getting wifi on android (or even winmo) to work.

For the mini-usb one to work, the vogue would have to work as a usb host which is pretty much impossible IMHO

It is not impossible - dzo has stated that he has the documentation for usb host - but there's no driver yet.

Wouldn't it be easier to use the sdio rather than tie up the usb port?

if you could find a microsd, sdio wifi card that fit WITHOUT having to cut the casing and still gave you storage? yes. but since we've never found one of those, usb ftw.

What about this setup I posted earlier?

lol... i guess that would work... definitely cleaner that the stub of the card protruding from the side. but think of all the cool stuff we could do with usb host...

Yea, but then your usb port would be tied up.
No headphones, no charging, etc.
USB host is cool, but not very practical. Or portable.

so is scottter's method confirmed working? sorry for so many questions

Nothing can be confirmed working untl somebody tries it.
Theoretically what I outlined should work, but I'm not willing to spend $80 on a theory.
If somebody does try it they should probably know their way around android pretty well, preferably a dev in case there are modifications needed.
EDIT: I just added up the cost and it would be closer to $80, the microsd to sd ribbon cable is about 30 if you add shipping, and the sdio card is about $45

It'd be external - like a GPS unit - like a bluetooth to WiFi bridge .... ?
Probably possible, but unlikely to happen - its effectively a very niche market.
I'd read somewhere that the price of this Spectec unit was supposed to be in the order of $150 - pretty steep, but not surprising, doubly so as you can't actually buy them yet.
Oh, and if you're interested in keeping an eye on their availability - keep on checking on e-bay - spectec sell a lot via that route.

will this work with my tilt?

since my activesync will not install on my computer, ive been looking for alternate methods to get music and movies on my tilt. i have a 1gig microsd right now and i just need an adapter for the sd slot on my computer. can someone tell me if the adapter that comes with http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/SanDisk-128MB-TransFlash-Memory-SDQCJP128A10/sem/rpsm/oid/100001/catOid/-16201/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
will work with my card? im just not sure what the difference between transflash and microsd is.
Try this instead.
http://www.supermediastore.com/kingston-micro-sd-transflash-memory-card-1gb.html
A couple dollars more but you get the right adapter.
so the circuit city one wont work? its just that im completely broke right now and i had a gift card for cc. i know 8 dollars is really affordable, but thats like a lot for me right now.
why not just use wm5storage, with the softick card export drivers. it allows you to use ur device as a usb mass storage device
For all practical purposes TransFlash and MicroSD are the same. However, with the free shipping that 1GB card from Supermediastore makes much more sense. (I've bought a bunch of stuff from them, they're very reliable.)
edit: I see now that you're only looking for the adapter. The CC one should work fine.
An SD adapter will work. You can just go get it and try it out and if for some reason it doesnt work..take it back to CC.
thanks for all the help guys. im gonna try that wm5storage first and if that doesnt work ill buy the cc adapter. thanks!
Softick Card Export
I use Softick Card Export and it works great. It basically makes your phone a microSD card reader and shows up as a removable device in windows. It's not free but $15 isn't bad.

Beware of this card! I have the 2GB version and it is SLOW (in the phone and with the adapter). It is a class 2 = minimum 2mb/s transfers.
Go with something like this or this that is much faster. We're talking ~9-12mb/s

[Q] Want to purchase a pre-loaded Rooted Sandisk SD card

I have very limited computer abilities and want to use CM7 when my Nook Color arrives. I want to purchase a Sandisk SD card that is already programmed with CM 7 (unless there is a better version available) and is "overclocked" and all I have to do is put it in and turn on the NC.. I need to know if anyone can recommend someone who sells the proper classed card and "no brainer" directions. I have waited several months to save the money for the NC and want to be running as efficiently as possible.
PS- I did try to find the answer on here before I typed this and could not get through the massive amount of info on here.. This forum is wonderful and thanks to all who are so willing to help those of us that are struggling a bit..
Thank you ahead of time.
Michelle
Im a kid so I can't sell mine and I looked around and couldn't find any. I think your best bet is to set asid your fears and start learning the world of uSD cards.
Doesn't get an easier than this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
The worst that can happen is you mess up and have to reformat the SD and start again.
Also, I found it easier to do gapps at the same time as the CM7 install. After CM7 boots just touch the 4 corners, starting in the upper left and go clockwise, to exit the setup wizard, setup your wifi and then add your google account.

There are such cards available for sale at other sites (and based on work of xda people), but if you've saved up to buy the NC, you know that money doesn't grow on trees. I think your best bet is to use the link in post #3 here. First buy a SanDisk class 2 or 4 (at most) 2, 4 or 8G micro sd card. The brand and class are important, but GB size is not, although smaller ones are very cheap now. I got an 8G at amazon for about $10.
You can follow the steps on that link, and will probably have questions as you do. I did, and people here were very nice to answer quickly and everything went great. It's really more fun that way, and I think you'll do fine.
Here are a couple more links that I found very helpful, in addition to the main one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4nenR-mNo0
http://quinxy.com/2011/04/01/comple...c4-android-2-3-gingerbread-on-the-nook-color/
If you make an mistakes along the way, it's only the sd card and you can start over. Your NC system is untouched. Good luck!
The risk of buying a pre-loaded card from ebay/craiglist/etc is that you won't have had the first-hand experience of setting up CM7 under your belt. Eventually you'll want to replace/update the ROM for some reason at which point you'll need to learn the procedure anyway.
Given the strength of the NC community here, please consider trying your hand at doing it yourself. Folks here will be more than happy to help you out.
The help the process along a little bit, can you let us know what type of computer you're using and what it's running? (Mac vs Windows, Windows XP, Vista, 7, etc.)
One more tidbit, in terms of compatible sd cards, as others have already said, the Sandisk Class 2/4 microSDHC are very good for this work. Amazon, Walmart, Radio Shack, Office Depot all have these at very reasonable prices, so take your pick where to get it from. I would suggest getting an 8gb right off the bat, the 4gb feels small very quickly.
Thank you so much.. I will give it a try myself.. I have an Acer laptop running Windows 7. I appreciate all the input. I will order a Sandisk 8 MG Class 4 Micro SD card today..
Be sure to get the micro-SD to SD adapter unless your computer has a micro-SD port. Costco has 8 GB cards with adapter for a good price (they were on sale a few weeks ago).

Also make sure the SD reader/adapter is HC compatible. I have an older multi-card reader and Patriot brand micro SD to full size SD adapter and it was driving me crazy trying to figure out why I couldn't get either to get the computer to even detect a brand new Sandisk 8gb micro SDHC card.
another issue you might run into tho is that i found my laptops built in SD reader had issues and apparently others found the same thing too.. youmay have to find a friend with a component SD reader
We have a Soyo Bayone Extreme 9 in 1 media Card reader/writer combo, would that work?

Coincidentally, I also have an Acer laptop w Win7, with sd card reader slot at the front. I ordered this card: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001B1AR50. If your Acer is like mine, you do need the adapter, which often comes with micro cards, to read them. Lots of other good advice from members here.
It should work, you will still need a microSD to SD adapter (comes with a lot of microSD cards)
I have a MicroSd card and adapter from Sandisk thanks again guys..
You can do it. We all had to do it a first time too and the support here is great!
I actually ran it off of the sd card first to see if I liked it. Then I flashed it to the onboard memory.
Don't forget to register it before you flash it. After that you just use a google account for the market.
Good luck!
I appreciate all the help. I may be returning my unit due to an unexpected $2000.00 bill for some electrical work. I have to be a big girl and and wear my big girl panties..lol

Technically, they are not charging for CM7 - they are charging for the SD Card and the time it takes to prepare the card, right? If so, I don't think it's such a bad thing... As long as they give credit to the CM7 team, that is!

for $3 plus change shipped, I would recommend right angle connector over straight one since it doesn't protrude too much outside of the case, and just looks cleaner with a phone without anything sticking out; also helps so you don't knock it out. With Sandisk Cruzer you can't even see usb drive, just a little flashing led dot.

Not *exactly* but its pretty close, its basically just an otg adapter with a normal drive. One of the benefits of having a dedicated microusb drive would be the size, it woild be able to be smaller that the 'normal' usb drives, much thinner.

I already use a otg adapter. Just for transfering files to a flash drive. I was just wondering if there was a microusb drive I could plug directly into the phone, negating the need for an adapter. Not looking to connect multiple items or hdmi or whatever and connecting an external power supply is just inconvenient, unless I understood it wrong? What benefits do a 11 pin off other than faster connection on multiple items?

But I am looking for a portable single device which I can just slide in my jacket.

If you're looking for one you could wait for the Meenova USB C one. I would post a link but I cannot as I am a new user. There is also the WeMe USB C OTG MicroSD sold on Amazon which has two sides. The Meenova is your best bet. Join the group of people waiting for it
If anyone is still looking for one of these, I found another one on Amazon and I'm happy with it so far. It has an aluminum body and seems well made. It's USB C only and has a dust cap you can lose. I was reluctant to buy it, because pretty much EVERY review was from someone that received it free to discounted in exchange for a review.. I tend to discount that type of review when shopping on Amazon, but given the low price decided to take a chance. The "list price" did make me roll my eyes a bit.. :/
I can't post a link, but the item number seems to be B01A1CZBAK and the name is SHARKK USB Type C MicroSD Reader Flash Memory Card Reader.
Edit: now that I can post links.. here is a direct link to save 5 seconds of searching. http://www.amazon.com/SHARKK®-Micro...TF8&qid=1459118835&sr=8-1&keywords=B01A1CZBAK
So far ive had no trouble with mine, though it doesn't seem like the 5X properly ejects it regardless of how you eject it or any other OTG flash drive. Every time I plug a flash drive or SD card in to my PC after having it plugged in to my 5X it wants to scan it for errors. Hopefully an update will address that before I start losing files. Here's what it looks like. I bookmarked the Meenova, but opted for something without moving parts (mostly).
Monoprice has a dual USB-C/USB-A model with a nifty design. The description seems to say that both male connectors are USB 3.0 although based on the photo, I'm not sure about the USB-A plug. Sold on Amazon as well.
