You can Not Flash this if you have the Froyo Build Running....
Either
A. You will Need to ODIN the Stock zImage ( Have this if Neede )..
or
B. Flash Back to Stock Rom

Hold Power + vol up and down + home
When the phone comes back on, let go of power and keep the others held and it should put you in download mode.
You may need to flash back to stock using ODIN before you can install a ROM that is 2.1, I'd think..

your phone isn't bricked. What u needed to do was revert back to stock 2.1 using ODIN and then flash this .zip in recovery. To restore, enter download mode and revert back to stock through odin. you'll be fine

easiest way ive found, is turn off the phone completely, plug it in to the usb port on your computer while its off. wait for the battery display to show up and finish loading, then hold both volume buttons down, then hold power while continuing to hold the volume buttons. as soon as the display turns black let go of the power button but continue to hold the volume buttons. works every time.

Hi,

He doesn't list it, so I would think not. His adb push/pull fix uses the same boot script mechanism we use for the apps2sd fix, so if you apply a2sd over this ROM, you will lose that fix. I can build a version that integrates them together, I just haven't had time yet and nobody has asked for it.

Thanks brotha!

thanks! Odin recognizes the phone but the phone gets hung up on the gt-i9000 boot screen so i cant get it into download mode. I'll work with the adb and see if i can figure it out otherwise i'll hit the radio shack for a jig and if that fails i'll have to trade it in at att under phone insurance.

You shouldn't be seeing any sort of boot screen if you're trying to get into download mode.. Do this: Pull your battery out and take out your sim and sd cards. Connect the phone by the usb. Hold down both up vol+down vol (do NOT hold the power button), and while holding those buttons, put the battery back in. It should take you directly into download mode.

You made sure you had the three button fix working before flashing right? Steam doesn't touch the bootloader, and if you're seeing the gt-i9000 screen, your bootloader is good (and so is download mode). If Odin's picking up the phone, you should be able to get adb to reboot it to download if nothing else. And as always, the jig method.
i cant get adb to recognize the device when i type adb devices.drivers are good. my serial number wont come up so cant issue any commands to reboot it or put it into download mode. i assume its because its stuck at the boot screen. i dont think i have the 3 button fix. I was using serendipity 3.5.2 with the oc\uv kernel and wanted to flash back to my previous rom and thats where my problems started. i guess the jig is up!! LOL

The button order for odin that you list above never really worked well for me personally, but I found one that did.
Battery out
Start Odin
Hold volume up+volume down, THEN plug into USB
Using it this way, you never, ever touch the power button on the phone.
Maybe I've been lucky, but I've never had it fail using it this way.

I've had success with this, as well.
i think this same thing happened to me. Most kernels actually arent able to be used with steam recovery only meant to be used with clockworkmod. THat means in order for your phone to work properly again you have to download a mod that actually works with steam, such as serendipity. So download that, plug your external sd into your computer put it on there, then through steam select intall zip, external sd and select the serendipity zip. Hopefully that will allow you to boot up your phone, download rom manager, click flash clockworkmod recovery, and then you can download any of the roms you want since almost all of them work with clockworkmod

[Q] Bricked Cappie?

Hola fellow XDA-ers...
I have searched and can't find a solution...and seems that I might be perma bricked but some forums indicate I am now. So help!
My phone will not enter into a download mode. All I get is an exclamation mark triangle connecting a phone and a computer icon.
I have tried both volume down and both volume buttons for power and to enter into DL mode, but it just goes back to the icon screen with the exclamation point.
Any help is greatly appreciated...I was trying to flash back to stock using ODIN to update my Cognition because I got stuck not being able to update it through CMO.
You need a jig... http://goo.gl/0p52o
First: wrong forum, you should be posting in Q&A
Second: remove battery, hold volumeup+volumedown+power and insert battery. Remove your finger from the power button after you see it restart the first time. If it does not enter download mode after it starts and restarts, press the power button again. Keep your volumeup+volumedown buttons pressed during this procedure
Noone ever needs a jig. Jigs are a money making tool.
I've flashed bad kernel after bad kernel and have never once required a jig.

this happened to me too, I can't remember what i did to get into that weird state.. but your definitely not totally bricked. Have you tried using a usb from power off standpoint- Pull battery, replace.. make suer usb is plugged into computer and while holding BOTH vol up and vol down, connect usb to phone STILL holding vol buttons utill Download mode appears.
Only other suggestion i can make is to pick up one of connexion2005's jigs. 8 bucks- forces your phone into DL mode from bricked/off standpoint. I use it all the time and I have never bricked!

Does not happen often but some times you do need it so dont misinform people mate
I back you up Coreym, 110% I bricked my phone more times than I can count (or my wife cares to hear about), and I've always been able to fix it.
I just run odin one click, pull battery, to kill boot loop, put battery back in, hold down volume buttons, and plug in usb, to get into download mode.
Once odin reads phone, click start, and it flashes default at&t kernel. Then go through odin3 reload your cwm and boom, back to flashing.
No JIG used.

Hey man,
You mean update through CWM?
Anyway, not sure if you found a resolution to your issue as of yet.
If not, try this, it really couldn't hurt at this point...
Apparently you have Odin and I'm guessing you're on a PC (Windows)
I'll assume you already have a stock factory ROM and PIT file (For Your Device) - if not you need to acquire these first.
Ensure you have the correct version of Odin. Some are recommending v1.7 or v1.52 - I personally use Odin v1.82
"Pluck" or Pull the battery from the device, remove the SIM and any external storage card (if any). *I just felt like using the work "Pluck" out of the context of harp playing...
Ensure the latest Samsung Drivers are installed on the PC (assuming you're on a Windows X86 or X64) and bounce the PC (reboot) Driver cache sometimes sticks...
Plug in your USB cable to the back panel of the PC (USB v2.0 or 2.2 is preferred but USB v1.0 will work) - Plugging into a front panel (for some odd reason often finds a way to disrupt order amongst the driver pool and creates havoc within Mass Storage in the DM. (Device Manager)
Now turn your device on.. (Just kidding...)
Open Odin first - then - plug the cable into your device and withing a few seconds Odin should detect a com port: (any port is fine - 3, 5, 4, 2, etc...)
Once the com port is seen, select the correct PIT file from the PIT menu in Odin and automatically the format partition check-box will populate. (I say to re PIT the device with correct PIT (should be a 512 PIT) because it sounds as though there may be some damage to the boot loader and the respective system partition. The PIT file is supposed the restore these partitions back to factory defaults provided you select the correct PIT file.
*Note - I wouldn't recommend using the PIT file for "every" ROM flash they you do, but at times it is necessary when flashing certain ROMs.
Now select the PDA (ROM you wish to flash) from the browse menu in Odin.
Make sure the check box is selected for reboot after flash.
Let the process take place - complete the flash and wait patiently for the new image or ROM to calibrate and load. (It may take a while)
Once loaded unplug the USB cable, replace the SIM and Ext Memory card then the battery and fix whatever settings you need to (ie: ATN, efs, WiFi, WAP, etc...)
Give it a go and see what becomes of it...
HtH
Peace-

He has (I think I remember telling him to do the same thing a while ago). He's most likely using a Cappy that's 1010 or greater.
This is why some people need the "3 button-fix" and whatnots as well. Right now at his/their current state, only a USB Jig will work since none of the combinations work properly.

please do not misinform people that jig is a money making tool. try this: flash a three-button disabled rom first and then unplug your usb cable while flashing ... i believe you will need a jig for sure.
you can buy one here, i believe it is cheaper & more reliable than you build one with components from Frys.

[q] help w/ captivate????

ok guys i'm definitely a noob at this but i think i messed up this morning downloading the gb drivers for my captivate. i was running serendipity 6.4 and i was trying to flash serendipity VII. i didn't flash back to stock 2.1 eclair with odin one click before i followed the instructions on downloading the new drivers for the gb. i went to the power menu on the 6.4 and hit download mode and plugged in the usb. it went halfway through the downloading process and stopped. my screen was blank without the downloading sign anymore and on odin it was at a halt. i waited for about 45 minutes for it to proceed and nothing so i unplugged it. when i did the factory recovery screen came up and i could use the volume up and down buttons to scroll through the menu choices but it wouldn't let me use the power button to make a selection at all like the power button wasn't working. i pulled the battery and put it back in after a while and now all i get is the galaxy s gt-i9000 samsung screen and nothing else. it wont let me back into recovery or download mode no matter what button combo i try. did i brick my phone and is there a way for me to fix this without having to buy another one? any help would be greatly appreciated.( guys, i realized i messed up shortly after it was done and messed up that i should've odin one clicked it back to factory before i did this, but by that time it was too late.)
When a problem comes along, you must jig it!
You might want to look into buying/making a jig to get you to a place where you can repair your phone.
ok guys, the phone will let me get back into the recovery menu and but won't let me make a selection out of the menu with the power button and i still get the galaxy s screen but nothing else.
Please use more descriptive thread titles. Your title is useless to anyone doing a search.

Could you please quote/reply to these steps to getting into download mode?
From powered-off state, Hold V+/V-, insert USB cable
With battery out, Hold V+/V-, insert USB cable
From powered-off state, Hold V-, press & hold power button
If you haven't tried this combo yet, try using the home softkey in place of the power button with some of these combos - there have been reports of the power button getting remapped to the home softkey.
i apologize for the wrong topic but i have tried every way possible that is listed on xda and other forums to get into download mode with no luck. the only way i could is from the menu's on the roms that i had flashed before( cognition 4.5.3 and serendipity 6.4). i got it to work one time with the hold the vol. up and down buttons and the power button and inserting the battery and it never worked again. all i get is the charging symbol now,the galaxy s screen, or recovery screen. i did get it back into recovery and i tried the home soft button and nothing. then i hit the menu soft button and now it shows the android man and the exclamation point in the triangle. what can i do guys???

Just out of curiosity, when you're at the android man/exclamation screen, if you have odin up already and plug in the phone, does it recognize that the phone's attached?
If so, you might be able to use the odin one-click to get back to stock eclair.
i will try that and get back to you. hopefully it will work.
no sir. i plugged it in and the computer lets me know that i plugged in the usb but nothing registers on odin or the phone.

Hmm... I've reached the end of things I know to say to try. I'm assuming you've tried changing which port you're plugging your phone into on the computer?
Also, have you tried using adb to reboot to download? If not, get adb and use the "adb reboot download" command (I think...) to see if that gets you there. You may need to be in the recovery menu (if you can get back there), or the exclamation point / android guy might work, too.
Although, if you can get back to recovery, you might be able to mount your phone to the computer, drop a copy of CWM on there and reinstall that so you can have more options available to you.
Your best bet at this point might be to buy or build a jig. That should hopefully make the phone go into download mode so that you can get to where you need to be.
ok, now i'm a little confused. i've been sitting here with my phone in my pocket not messing with it. i pull it out of my pocket and it was off. i held the down volume button and the power button at the same time and it immediately started showing download mode. now i'm not near my computer with odin on it to flash it back to stock. lolol. this is depressing. now all i can hope is i can make it back to my computer before my battery runs out. i say this because my phone has always been hard to use the button combos to get it into download mode.
if i can get odin to flash it back to stock,i'll master clear it. question is should i root it again before flashing the GB bootloaders to install serendipity VII?

Good to hear there's a glimmer of hope. If you do manage to get there, you might want to make an EFS backup before moving any further, just so you have one more tool in your arsenal of preventing phone problems.
After reading this whole thread I think your problem is that you now have gingerbread bootoaders and your button combos have changed and you don't know it.

i think you may be right about having the GB bootloaders. now first question is how to i manage to make an efs back up? secondly, if i have the GB bootloaders then what do i do to flash the complete serendiptiy VII onto the phone? the reason why i ask is because the phone just quit downloading the flash in the middle of the download and that's when all hell broke loose. lolol. but you guys are right. i might just have a glimmer of hope.
If you do have the GB bootloaders, you should (theoretically) be able to get to download mode with the volume - & power button combination. This may take a little fiddling to find a timing after you've started the phone to find out when you can get to it.
As far as flashing Serendipity, you could try, but my advice would be to try and get to stock Eclair first and then go forwards. You're in a place with a lot of variables, and stock Eclair would be as variable-free as you're likely to get.
As far as backing up the EFS, under the CWM recovery menu, there's an option to make a nandroid backup. That's step 1. Once you've made the backup, just copy it from the clockworkmod folder to a safe place.
well i've got an update now. got everything back to factory 2.1 eclair and then i did a master reset in the phone because now i can't get into the recovery menu or the download menu and one click root will not work on my phone now at all. it keeps saying failed.

+1 on the jig...odin is very finicky and a jig will get you to download mode when you need it most...
buy or make one...worth every penny.

LEarned a lesson today cognition ->eclair ->apex

Learned a lesson today. I been trying to flash back to my stock 2.1 eclair to go from cognition to apex7. But with my version of the phone I loose that "3 button " feature.
I kinda got the download mode to work last night, then I got a soft brick. I fixed it with odin and was happy.
Built a jig today with 302 ohms of resistance and no luck. (still powered on and all but no download mode).
Got it into download mode one time (with the 3 button fix through clockwork recovery), loaded "galaxys-bootloader-JVB.tar.md5" and it went through, rebooted and it went to the standard screen. I didnt want that, so I shut her down and went back into download mode so I can load the second boot loader for apex. Wouldnt go.
I ran the "3 button" fix again. But at the menu of clockwork mod in recovery mod when it said it was done, I took out the battery instead of resetting...brick. Phone doesnt respond.
Damn, lesson learned, always restart phone LOL. All this for a damn netflix app. Now I have no phone, and im going to try to find the guy who does JTAG. I have warrenty but its like 120 bucks to send it for a new one, screw that.
When I did apex7 the first step, after the phone started it said samsung i9000....does that mean I have the wrong rom on my i897? it started and booted and went to the home screen...?

there you go buddy he will set you straight. check your pm
it wasnt the not turning the phone on that bricked you. you had gingerbread I9000 bootloaders and flashing the 3 button fix replaced the secondary bootloader with a froyo one. so your primary and secondary now don't match. and you didnt need to flash the fix anyway the gingerbread bootloaders have their own combo and it hasnt been lost by anyone that ive heard of.
it is vol down+ power for download
and vol up+power for recovery.

So was it wrong to have the i9000 bootloaders? All I did was follow the instructions on what to do. Did I do that wrong?
Installation Instructions: (Thanks to Connexion2005 & ICezar for easy instructions)
1.Download ODIN 1.82: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?7qta8hmcd880zth
2.Download the GB Bootloaders: http://code.google.com/p/project-con...ar.md5&can=2&q
3.Download the Talon Kernel: http://berryfx.com/RobBeane/Kernel/i...nDEV-0.1.6.tar
4.Flashback to stock JF6 for clean install.
5.Place the ApeX GB ROM package in your SD card.
6.Open Odin 1.82 and select GB bootloader package in PDA option, Put your phone in download mode using regular key combo and connect to PC. Once ODIN recognizes your phone hit START button. You may have bootloops if you try to boot your phone here. Pull the battery out and then put it back and follow step 7.
7.Open Odin 1.82 again and select TalonDev kernel in PDA option, Put your phone in download mode using 'Volume down + Power' key combo and connect to PC. Once ODIN recognizes your phone hit START button.

No the I9000 bootloaders were fine, u messed up trying for 3 button fix. ApeX OP said that after flashing I9000 bootloaders ur download/recovery combo will change.
did u try button combo mentioned in step 7 to get into download mode?

yeah. From day one the download mode never worked.
Battery pull, holding power and the volume up and down and whatever. Every possibility.

I meant after step 6 you should have tried this button combo, you shouldnt have flashed 3 button fix and doing this mismatched your bootloaders
If you're simply trying to get your netflix rocks off, go back to stock eclair and flash DG's GB 2.3.3 Cognition 5 ROM. It's packaged very nicely into it's own Odin1Click.
It's so easy, even a caveman(noob) can do it.

Also they still use I897UCKF1 based modem I think. Im trying to get away from it because I have had poor results with it. Im tired of 100-300 kb/s speeds.

[Q] Three button salute doesn't work

I currently have The Collective's AoCP build 3 Jelly Bean ROM on my Captivate. I need to go back to the Cyanogen 10 builds because it looks like they've fixed the lag issue. I came upon a really bad accident on my way to work and needed to call 911 ASAP. I unlocked my phone and hit the phone button and it must have taken 20 seconds for the dial pad to come up. I've gotta try something else...
My question is this. I can't get into recovery by turning the phone off and using the 2 or 3 button salute. I've tried volume up - power, volume down - power, and volume up&down - power. No dice. I've learned there is a 3buttonfix that I can download and install, but I read about it first and it says if you're running this bootloader or that bootloader don't use this fix because you WILL hard brick your device. I have no idea what bootloader I'm running and if I can't use this fix, what do I do to fix the issue? For future reference, how do I tell what boot loader I'm running?
The reason I want to MAKE SURE the 3 button salute works is I want to flash from AoCP to CM10 and if something goes wrong, I need to be able to do that. I can hold the power button down now, and choose reboot, then boot into recovery, and that works, but if I soft brick my device, that function won't do me any good.
Any guidance you pros out there have for me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Don't use the 3 button fix. You are correct in that it will hard brick your phone. If adb works, you can use that to reboot into recovery. I think you can do that with a terminal emulator too ("su" first to get root access, then "reboot recovery").
There's not a way to tell which bootloader your on. If you want to know 100% without a doubt your on the latest, flash the kk4 stock ROM. Downside to that is you would have to start over on cm10 or any other aokp. Making a nandroid first will make it less painful.
Also, that dialer lag will happen with any ICS-JB ROM on this phone. It's pretty much unavoidable at this point. Have you ever done the recovery combination before? If not, then you may be doing it wrong. Hold down the volume buttons, and press the power button only until the screen turns on. Hold the volume keys down until you hit recovery.
Oh, duh, you're on AOcP. You should have a recovery option in your power menu under reboot.
Oh said:
I do have a recovery option int he power menu. But what if I soft brick my device? I have a rigged jig somewhere, but that wasn't reliable for me. Not because it doesn't work, but because I made it very, um, frugally.
So there is no way to know what boot loaders I'm on? Darn... I didn't do the original flashing. MobileTechVideos.com did the flashing after I hard bricked it where my jig no longer even worked.
Thanks all for your input, and anything else you may suggest.

If you're on AOCP you have GB bootloaders.

THANK you very much for that info. Do you know of anyway for me to be able to boot into recovery mode using a key combination? I tried what was mentioned above (holding volume up-down after pressing the power until it boots into recovery, but it just goes right to the AoCP boot animation).
Maybe your holding the buttons too long when you try the button combo.

You may have already tried this in your many attempts but I'll still throw in my two cents.
Starting with power off hold all three buttons at the same time. First you should see the att splash screen and then your kernel splash screen. Then the phone should turn off. Keep holding the buttons til you see the att screen again and then release them all. That should get you into recovery. At least that is exactly how I get there besides of course the power menu.

Wait are you missing download mode also?

Yes, I do appear to be missing download mode as well... What have I done? The phone runs just fine with AOCP The Collective, except it's just getting too laggy for me and I want to check out CM10's newest releases. BUT, I don't want to be flashing ROM's until I can boot into Recovery. I can REBOOT my phone from my Power menu once the phone boots up, but I can not get any button combination to work to boot me into recovery.
Regarding download mode... I can not enter download mode either. I power down, take battery out, remove SIM, place battery in phone hold volume up/down and insert usb cable. Just displays the battery charging meter...
When your phone turns on, do you have a white AT&T screen or is it a black gt-i9000 screen?

I do get the white AT&T screen... It comes on, then flash to a black screen and then back to the same white at&t screen, then to The Collective boot animation. This wouldn't be a problem for me, but I do want to play with some other ROM's, but I don't want to without this working...
I believe you can reboot in recovery using adb with the command : "reboot recovery"

I KNOW I can, but I can only do that if I am able to boot into a rom. What if something gets hosed?

Find that jig you rigged up and see if that gets you into download mode. If so I suggest using a one-click back to kk4 and I'd get the one with boot loaders for good measure. Then see if you can do any of the button combos

Thanks for the suggestion... I downloaded a 1 click to KK4 and used my jig, which worked. Got really lucky, as something happened at the SET PIT table during the ODIN process and I had to start over. Luckily it didn't brick, but on the next boot I got the icon of a phone and a computer with a triangle in between those icons. I ran ODIN again after booting into download mode, and it took. I'm not running KK4 and I can do the 3 finger salute, so now I'm going to start over with rooting and moving to Jelly Bean. What a way to get the recovery back...
Thanks again for everyone's assistance.

Glad that got you up and running. Sometimes it's unavoidable to flash back to stock like that but I suggest you keep that one click handy in case something else strange happens.
