bricked captivate - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

need alt ways to get into recovery other than adb and holding down the volume keys.
i bricked my captivate using the odin one click recovery going from the i900 rom to stock. odin had froze and i restarted trying again only to see the phone and computer screen.
sorry a bit frustrated ....ask all the questions u need

Here's what got me out of a jam...

1) Remove the battery
2) Remove the SIM
3) Reinsert the battery
4) Run ODIN (Note: I am using Windows 7 Professional x64 so I ran ODIN in Administrator mode by right-clicking on the file in Explorer and choosing the 'Run As Administrator' option. I would suggest doing this to make sure you have no permissions issues with the program.)
5) Depress both the up and down volume buttons on the phone at the same time
6) While you are depressing both the up and down volume buttons, plug in the USB cable.
No need to depress the power button or do anything else. The phone should go right into Download mode with the little yellow construction guy.
Then ODIN will see the COM port you are connecting with and you can just click Start.

I'm not so sure that it's not brickable, I'm pretty sure I bricked mine...
I was trying to load the international galaxy s 2.2 rom using odin 3 and for some reason I got stuck in recovery mode and could do nothing (this was after it finished loading the rom). I couldn't make it go to the download mode. Anything I did just took me right back to recovery.
I'd really love to know what you guys would have done, I'm new to android the captivate is my first.
Thanks in advance for your input.
By the way, I was talking it through with a buddy and we came up with a possible cause. I was rooted when I tried loading the 2.2 rom. Would that have bricked it?

Why can't Vibrant users be this helpful?

can i tell you how good god is?
so over at androidforums by djgibbsjr
his words....
i did the same thing thing initially, no big deal, battery pull and while the phone is off hold volume key and power, ...
GUYS.......all i needed to do was hold down the volume key not both

Yes, the buttons are different if you attempted to flash a Galaxy S rom, the typical button hold will not work.

designgears said:
Hey guys, if you are stuck on that phone+!+computer screen, do this to get into download mode!!
1. Take out your sim card, sd card, battery and open Odin3(you must open odin3 before you start or it won't flash. Do NOT put your sim or sd card back in).
2. Put the battery in.
3. Plug in USB. (the phone will power on to that screen)
4. Hold down both Volume keys, and then push power. Hold it and dont let go.
5. Wait for it to go black and return to that horrible screen.
6. When it goes black the 2nd time release power and keep holding the voldown and volup.
note: THE STUPID SCREEN IS NOW FIXED!!

that is EXACTLY what got my phone out of the certain brick situation i thought i was in this morning. i had been trying for hours, every combination imagineable from the vibrant/galaxy s forums. odin3 had shut down on me twice mid process so everything was SEVERELY screwed. i did that combination and the very first time it caught and installed now my phone works perfect. ended up sending designgears a donation based on that post alone. thanks dude!

I did have my phone plugged into power when I was trying the button push combos.
I didn't, however, try holding down just the volume button so I can't know for sure if that could have worked.
Since I was within the 30 day window I just took it back to at&t and they gave me a new one. I'm too chicken to try loading the 2.2 rom again. I really want to, but I can't afford a $500 brick...

AT&T replaced it without question? Interesting...
Edit: Well, now that I think about it, the guy that sold me mine was pretty clueless about it. I had to show him how to remove the battery cover, despite the printed "ILLUSTRATED" instructions stuck to the cover.

There's going to be a lot of refurbished captivates hitting the market soon.

So, I didn't brick it... I did the same thing with my replacement phone but this time I was patient enough to actually figure out how to fix it.

So I can't get any button combo to work, and all I get is White AT&T screen (if unplugged) and a frozen loading screen(if plugged into usb). Any ideas?

I think I have the same problem.
Used Odin one click to flash stock rom and then tried to flash JH7, but had some troubles with odin when trying flashing... tried to reboot the phone by pulling out the battery and now I can't turn it on, just have an image on the screen: Phone has troubles with connecting to PC and that's it...
oh yeah, that helped me:
1. Remove battery & usb
2. Open odin.
3. Plug in usb.
4. Hold vol down.
5. Put battery in.

Bricked captivate
ok so i was running a devil kernel on jellybean 4.2 and for some strange reason the rom started acting funny and gave me a message saying i had to type in a password ti decrpyt storage even though i have no passwords on my samsung I897. So i decided to flash back to stock and start all over again from scratch using odin one click but in the middle of downloading my phone was disconnected and it gave me the bricked screen shortly after. Now i am unable to do anything on this phone ive tried pushing the volume buttons and taking the battery and sim card out while running odin 3 again trying to force it back into download but so far no progress has been made. If any one can help me it is much apprecitated.

HELP!!!! very fustrating. BRICKED possibly

Okay long story short. I flashed to phoenix rom from cognition 2.2 rom with cwm. Now i can't even odin back to 2.1. Every time i insert the battery the phone turns on itself. Please help me I have tried to go to download mode , recovery mode. it just sits at the at&t screeen
anyone help please!!
Hi Matt. I'm pretty sure you're not bricked, but you are at a point that might give you a little difficulty getting into download mode. Try the following:
Download Mode
You don't need to be at a "phone> ! <computer" screen to do this either, though you might need to try it a few times.
If you have the Android SDK installed you can type:
adb reboot download
To have it switch to download mode. If you don't have the Android SDK installed you can search the forums for directions or I'll post back later with how to install it.
Another option, of course, would be to create a jig or buying one pre-made. I don't believe you're at this point yet.
If those methods don't work...
Pull your Sim Card, Battery, and any External SDCard
Turn on Odin
Plug your Phone back into the USB Cable (battery out still)
While holding down the Volume +/- Button - put your battery back in.
It should go into DOWNLOAD MODE.
If you get the Gray Battery Charge screen - it didnt work. Rinse and Repeat until it goes into the DOWNLOAD MODE. Might take a few tries.

I watched your video - thanks for posting it
Ok - I have never seen that happen before. But... unfortunately I think your phone truly is bricked.
I mean it looks like it isn't getting past the "boot loader" (sorry not a dev so the technical term might be a little different.) to even allow you to get to a recovery mode.
So unless MikeyMike or some other dev has some way for you to re-write the sbl.bin file to allow your phone to boot - it's pooched

so not even a jig would fix this?!!
Doesn't appear so - It won't get past the AT&T screen... does your computer even recognize the phone when it's plugged in?
I don't think it is booting up enough for you to get to the recovery menus... so sounds like the sbl.bin is corrupted - which unfort is a true brick.
But you could try the Jig as it is pretty inexpensive. Post here to let us know if it worked or not.

the usb doesn't read the phone when it is plugged in. It says unable to read, malfunction. but it does charge. weird thing is it still say its charging when i pull the usb out
lol thats just a residual electricity in the phone that is still being discharged after you unplug it... kinda like static electricity and a light bulb.
But.. I would still try the jig as a last ditch effort - it is possible that it would work...
This is why we flash to stock and THEN flash custom roms, kids

Disconnected from PC in the middle of Odin restore-phone wont' boot.

The USB cord was removed from my phone in the middle of an Odin restore (it was stuck at factoryfs.rfs). Now the phone won't boot and it isn't recognized by my computer when plugged in. Did I find a way to brick this thing? Any help would be appreciated. This is my fourth Captivate and I'm sure AT&T is going to start to give me a hard time. Thanks.
build a jig or buy one on ebay. you need to get into download mode and reflash to sotck.

Try all 3 methods to get into download mode first
yes, you can try the key combo first. but as i know, build 1010 or later wont work for the key combo.
Got it back to d/l mode. Now it's stuck at factoryfs.rfs-same as last time. I'm finished with this phone. AT&T can send me another. This is what happened to the past two phones. Stuck on a Odin restore and can't get it up again.
Edit: Just booted up. That's a relief. Thanks.

so if your potentially bricking the phones, what do you tell AT&T that happened? and do they not ever check or whats the deal?
As far as I know at the wareenty centers they check for physical and water if they do attempt to boot as long as nothing looks custom they wont bother with checking the recovery or key combos samsung takes care of the rest they just want functional hardware..oh dont mention anything about modding. If anything syncing crashed is the best explaination. Tested.

Sorry I'm late getting back. My phone is up and running again. Got in to D/L mode and flashed back to stock. Got stuck on the AT&T logo, but used Odin one more time and it booted right up. The first time I brought in the phone, the tech took it to the display for 2 minutes and called the warranty dept for me. I think that it helped that the Chiefs playoff game was on. They didn't seem to want to be bothered! The phone rep asked about water and physical damage. No questions about modding. The second time I did it at home over the phone. Again, no questions about modding. I told the rep both times that I was trying to transfer music to the phone via Kies and it crapped out on me. It always help to play dumb and act like you don't know too much.

I had the same exact problem when i was just starting to mess around with roms and my biggest issue was the sequence that it took to flash properly. i kept opening odin then putting my phone in download mode and THEN plugging it into use as opposed to how it should have been which is holding vol up and vol down pressed then plugging in usb.

That's the weird thing. I'm somewhat new, but have been flashing my Captivate since Sept. When the original Cognition came out I was flashing daily. I think my problem was, it took longer than usual to flash to stock, I got impatient and didn't realize I could get to D/L mode by taking the battery out, holding power and inserting battery. I always used the button combo. Live and learn.
same problem
Ok i have the same problem as the original post stated, running odin and disconnected right at the beginning of the rom flash! this phone wont power up, and my jig (which i have used before) will not work! Is it done for!?
Ur last hope lays in adams Am I bricked thread, where u'll find an app that checks what state ur phone is in (linux or ubuntu needed)
nevermind, I tried harder and the jig worked, its one of the homemade jigs, where you cut up your charger, and use resistors to create the circut . . . . jankety but i got it to work thanks anyway though
Glad you got it, but I would buy a jig and keep it in a drawer. Just in case.

[Q] My Captivate Needs Help Bad ! ! !

I have a 2 month old AT&T Captivate and about a month ago I loaded the Andromeda v2.0 MOD and love it. Everything was working fine until about a week ago when my external speaker stopped working. I turned to the Andromeda programmers and one of them had me upgrade to v1.2 but that didn't help and they helped me downgrade back to stock so I can turn the phone back to AT&T.
But along the way something happened and now the AT&T white flash screen just flashes on and off every two seconds. I've tried every process on this web site including building a JIG to force the phone into download mode but that didn't work either.
Does anyone have any idea how to get this crippled Captivate back to stock?
Thank you.
So, when it started flashing was it running the stock ROM? If so call At$T and get a replacement shipped to you.
Does the phone go back in download mode?
Did you try the one click Odin or the manuel one?
If you have tried one of them try the other one and see if that works and also I believe you would get more responses if you post this in Captivate questions and answers rather then in development.
To fix the speaker problem, you need to take off the back cover, and press down on the bezel around the speaker (the speaker unit can pop out).
Not much help for your bootloop (which is what sounds like is happening- search for this phrase, perhaps you'll have some luck).
Good luck,

4. once you are in download mode click start in odin.

Yes this has happened to me before build yourself a jig or buy one from Mobile Tech Videos and use the link I have above to get back to stock.
You must be a build 1010 or higher because we (im a build 1011) cannot use the 1-click. Do not worry you didnt brick your phone you'll just need a jig and after that your smooth sailing if you follow the instructions in that post

Is the battery charged?
I had this exact problem. Don't worry though, the fact that your phone is in a bootloop is actually a really good sign, it means you're not permanently bricked.
The newer builds (1010 and up) can't use odin 1 click to get back to stock (can't remember the reason though). There's a post I'll look up for you that shows you how to use odin3 to get back to stock.
What you need to do is build yourself a jig (or buy a premade one) because our phones don't have the three key combo enabled (the volume up+ down & power key etc). I'm on my phone atm so I'll have to go find the link for the jig guide too.
Edit: the odin3 guide was already posted above, but here's the link again for the sake of redundancy:

[Q] jig won't work, what to do?

Hi,
Today I tried to flash my phone using odin, the flashing stopped in the middle and the phone won't come back, I restarted the phone then it showed a phone, exclamation mark and a computer on screen.
I know this is a half brick, I made myself a jig using 300k resisters, the phone starts but still the exclamation mark screen, same with vol down + power method.
Now I am stuck, does anyone who had this experience can tell me what to do? How do I get back to download mode?
Thanks all.

This actually happened to me yesterday (except I don't have a jig) when I was going from stock froyo to a gb ROM. I too had the phone exclamation computer screen. I ended up just starting up the Jf6 one click Odin and plugged in my phone. It recognized it and everything went fine after I hit start. It worked for me, but I would still be cautious since i'm pretty sure it still involves changing boot loaders.

You mean even odin recognizes it even when it's not in download mode?

That's the way it worked for me yesterday. After failing to get download mode, I pulled the battery, put it back in, started Odin one click, plugged in the phone, and it recognized it in the com port if Odin.

I'd say at this point it's probably worth a shot unless someone tells you otherwise.

You should be ok, I had the same problem once and Odin recognized it for me too.

If is the screen that also says something about hardware failure and recovery mode, yes you can also flash it there just like download mode.
Walk into at&t, say "my phone just stopped working" and raise hell?
If they ask about flashing or anything, just say "I don't know what that is. I was trying to log in to facebook."
If they don't hand you a brand new phone instantly for free, demand to speak to the manager.

Hi,
Today I tried to flash my phone using odin, the flashing stopped in the middle and the phone won't come back, I restarted the phone then it showed a phone, exclamation mark and a computer on screen.
I know this is a half brick, I made myself a jig using 300k resisters, the phone starts but still the exclamation mark screen, same with vol down + power method.
Now I am stuck, does anyone who had this experience can tell me what to do? How do I get back to download mode?
Thanks all.

If the jig just turns on the phone into kernel panic mode then you are still OK. It may be that your touching the wires themselfs when your holding the jig. Make sure to use gloves or be really careful how you hold it. I had this happen my first few times with a home made jig.

i wrapped it in plastic tape, so i thought it worked, but just won't boot into download mode.
could the jig trigger "kernel panic mode" (phone ! comp) if it weren't working?
thanks you.

tried this, open odin, plugin phone, put in battery
phone ! computer
one more thing, i was doing a one click odin flash, could this have damaged the bootloader?
when you get the phone on a black screen the phone is actually in download mode. That image basically means the phone cant boot up, but its forced itself into a download mode state so kie, odin or heimdall can recognize it to update the firmware etc

THAT's the reason the carriers want to lock down devices right there...
people taking their phones into their own hands doing something to it before they know what they are doing, ending up with a non working but completely recoverable phone but still trading it in cause they dont want to take the time to learn how to fix what they just F'ed up
OP that is the "incomplete flash screen" if your bootloaders were damaged then you get NOTHING out of the phone at all.
when you plugged in using the button combos with odin open and it went to that screen did odin see it?
If you have gingerbread bootloaders then the PC ! PHONE screen should act as download mode if you plug the phone in with odin open.

um, i tried probably all the combes i could find on the internet, tried jig, tried plugin usb with odin opening, they all lead to this phone ! computer screen, i flashed 2.1 jf6 stock rom yesterday, could this be the reason, that all the method does not work?
Thank you guys.

Yes it will still trigger it to turn on if it is not done right aand if your at the PC! Screen then that is what will show up. The plastic tape may not be blocking The electric current from the human body. I would suggest using electric tape. Even with the tape make sure to hold it by the resistor and make sure your not touching any of the wires
You didn't answer my question.
Does Odin see it?
That is the incomplete flash screen, the image for download mode is just a .png if the flash you were attempting failed before that image was rewritten to the phone when download is initiated all you will get is that screen.
Homemade jigs can be a real pain to get right, might want to buy one...
make sure the USB is plugged into the back of your PC, right click Odin and run as admin. Use the jig, if you still get that screen plug it in anyway and see if you get communication with Odin, if you get a com port hit start and cross your fingers.

[Q] possibly hard brick

so a buddy of mine possibly hard bricked his captivate today. he tried to odin a stock rooted rom and it messed up completely, i was able to get it into download mode again and odined back to a normal stock non rooted rom but it was like the odin didnt stick and it started doing the same thing. essentially when the phone is off if you turn it on it stays on the att screen for roughly ten seconds and bootloops. if you plug it in it acts like it is charging for a second then freezes and loops through acting like its charging over and over. if you power it on and then plug it in it goes to the charging screen and then loops. any suggestions since i can no longer get into download mode? do i need to buy a jig?
Sounds like you need a jig. You can buy what you need at radio shack and make it yourself though

It's not a hard brick unless nothing ever comes on screen

No it's not. Only 3 states of being (without hardware damage), working, soft bricked, and hard bricked.
Working doesn't need defined
Hard brick is missing or corrupted bootloaders, and you get absolutely no response from it whatsoever.
A soft brick is any state where the phone does something, but doesn't boot all the way into Android. So if it was "a heck of a lot more than a soft brick" it would be dead, and you would need to zombify it with unbrickable mod, which isn't the case here. A jig will force download mode in seconds.

I was mostly kidding but here's an interesting tidbit for you since you are apparently well versed in this, the jig didn't work.

Did you buy one prebuilt, or rig one together from capacitors and such?
I just bricked my Captivate using Odin.
It only shows the "phone yellow triangle computer" symbol and isn't recognized by the computer...
I just ordered a jig, hopefully when it arrives in two weeks it will work...
Until then, any options on getting this recognized by my computer so I can try Odin again ?
Thanks.

Make sure the odin is ready, pull your battery, plug your usb into your phone, hold both volume up/down, and reinstall your battery.
Don't freak out, it's going to come back up as the same screen this time, this screen will keep showing until you have a succesful flash, but your device should now show up on Odin.

Open Odin as admin, hold the two volume buttons of your phone, plug in the microusb cable, press "start" on Odin. Most of the time, the phone pc screen can be treated as a download screen.
I had a similar problem once, and I could've stop panicing! Just calm down and try what I said. I don't think that a Jig is necessary in your case.
An update, nothing worked on my phone, no button combinations, nothing at all, it just never would show up in Odin for me to reflash...got my jig in the mail finally and it did the trick within seconds. The phone is totally recovered now. Thanks for all the suggestions.
